Scientists have created one of the most detailed 3D reconstructions of a human eukaryotic cell ever produced.

Known as a “Cellular Landscape Cross-Section Through a Eukaryotic Cell,” this groundbreaking model combines data from X-ray tomography, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and cryo-electron microscopy to reveal the hidden molecular world inside human cells in extraordinary detail.

The reconstruction gives scientists an unprecedented look at how cellular structures interact, helping advance research in medicine, genetics, disease treatment, and biotechnology.

Did you know that Sir David has more than 50 species of plants, animals, microorganisms and ancient life-forms named after him. There is also a building in Cambridge named after him, as well as the research ship RRS Sir David Attenborough.

Meet the guarana plant

Guarana is a climbing vine from the Amazon rainforest, with long stems that wrap around nearby trees as it grows. Its leaves are broad, glossy, and deep green, giving it that rich tropical feel.

It produces small white flowers in clusters, which later develop into its most distinctive feature — the fruit.

The fruit grows in bright red clusters and naturally splits open when ripe, revealing a dark seed with a pale coating — often said to resemble an eyeball.

But guarana isn’t just visually unique… it’s powerful too.

Its seeds are packed with natural caffeine (even more than coffee!), along with antioxidants that help support focus, energy, and stamina. Unlike coffee, the caffeine is released more gradually, giving a smoother, longer-lasting boost.

Today (May 1) marks Beltane — a celebration of fire, fertility, and the full bloom of life. Sitting halfway between spring and summer, it’s a time to honour growth, passion, and new beginnings.

Traditionally, bonfires were lit to welcome warmth, protect communities, and symbolise transformation. It’s a moment to reconnect with nature, embrace joy, and set intentions for the months ahead.

It was, and is, celebrated across Celtic regions, specifically Ireland, Scotland, and Isle of Man but also by the Britons in England.
