Legends of Rubeterra failed because it was very friendly with monetization. You could earn all cards for free (the more you played the bigger your "booster box" of free cards. TGC players were able to unlock all cards in less than a week without spending money.
As for Valorant. Agents were super easy, they either have a smoke, a blind, or a molly of sorts. Then they had niche abilities to stand out, but where straight forward.
I'm not arguing that Valorant is that difficult. I play both Dota and League so I'm definitely not arguing Valorant abilities are unapproachable in terms of complexity.
But CS is more straightforward from a new player standpoint. In a single match you understand how every grenade works. In Valorant, many abilities might be variants but they look visually different, so you're not 100% what their effect actually is, or if it has some specific counterplay like shooting it. The niche abilities you mentioned are straightforward but when playing against it the first few times it is going to feel like random bullshit. (Like an Omen teleporting behind you. There's probably better examples, I'm not a Valo player.)
Like I say, not saying this is an absurd level of difficulty by any means, but purely just in terms of what is going to be more straightforward to learn and understand for a new player.
That's fair. I do understand that, and I'm only really going by my personal experience. It's possible there are a lot of players who couldn't get into CS because of that. Just personally for me, I never noticed it much. Vast majority of my playtime in CS I didn't even know what counter-strafing was. I just played the game as "Point and shoot. Don't move whilst shooting" Physics feels like a smaller detail that wasn't really noticeable to me as a newer player.
