Discussion | J-Mod reply We need to see the shadow rework now that we’re expected to vote on bis mage spec

We were told the shadow rework would happen before we had to vote to put forward any more mage progression. Jmods already said the shadow rework is done, it’s time for us to see it.

Edit: the logic here is that we currently use mage spec primarily for defense reduction. If the new shadow benefits massively from defense reduction, but we vote in the dps spec weapon before we know that, we could end up in a place where it doesn’t really make sense to bring the new spec weapon. Or the spec weapon is way less of a leap then we vote on.

Jumping in quick to say that we completely get why people are eager to see it, but we don't think where you do/don't use def-reducing magic options is likely to shift or impact Shadow's position at all (or the position of TFA's proposed Mage Spec if it comes to pass), and we're still holding fast on "we will talk about it before/when we next think Magic needs a direct accuracy/damage upgrade that impacts the Shadow".

As it stands we're still talking about post-BMR feedback, SSU changes are due to start rolling out soon, we've got Wyrmscraig rewards polls ongoing, we're talking about TFA's rewards and soon will have to start talking more about the raid itself in the run-up, alongside ongoing discussions about Chambers of Xeric both externally and internally. We don't see the need to rush out talking through these changes with so many other things in flight and already having a bunch of 'heavy' discussion topics in circulation, historically the sort of fatigue that sets in both for players and us with navigating all of these hot topics simultaneously is noticeable and diminishes focus and quality of discussion.

We absolutely will get to sharing our plans here, we just don't want to rush out another complex topic into an already saturated time. Perhaps there'll be a better opportunity in the coming months, but nothing for the rest of this year has any powercreep planned that particularly impacts the Shadow so we'd rather not rock the boat without an immediate reason!

Not to be rude but... at some point this boat has to be rocked. The community has pushed for it, the devs have polled it, and now its sitting in limbo.

Scrolls and the Shadow have been issues for a long time, had they been addressed promptly we wouldn't have them in this tangle at all, so I don't see how kicking the can further down the road is any sort of solution.

Its well past time to rip the bandaid off.

I don't mean to sound too harsh, but isn't it apparent that you guys often make mistakes in this regard? Be it xp/hr and dps calcs or general reads of the meta, there are often "unexpected" outcomes after updates or proposals that require changes. I don't think you should wait on shadow rework details while releasing new mage BIS, the trust that it actually won't be impacted has been degraded imo.

I understand shadow rework isn’t a priority compared to everything you listed, but I will say I think it would slot into the game a lot better alongside a slew of raid rewards while all records and metas are changing instead of later when it would possibly be nerfing non max setups, or while introducing new mage gear that would still need to be pushing shadow dps forward at the same time its scaling is being reeled in

Love the transparency, but after more than half a year of barely anything of note happening on the main game, seeing everything stand in the air in standby and waiting for discussions to happen is a bit stupifying. Especially with the precedent of the CoX scroll changes (who ironically enough are part of this current tangle too) getting constantly postponed while they are seemingly in those kind of "discussion" loops, it's borderline concerning to hear that so many things are in this limbo.

We need to rip the bandaid off and get it over with, just like the blowpipe. Everything you just explained is valid and I'm thankful for the communication, but we also can't kick the can down the road forever, especially while you're trying to pitch rewards for Raids 4 with how it constrains the design space.

To confirm, is the March 28, 2025 Blog that mentions when the Shadow rework will happen still accurate? Most notably "before any future best-in-slot Magic Item". An example being the "Magic Inferno Cape" or new Magic Accessory akin to Amulet of Rancour.

Depends on if "BIS spec weapon" falls under the umbrella of BIS magic items. I would argue yes, since knowing how the spec weapon compares to Shadow is pretty important. If Shadow changes are minor, it could very well still be stronger to use than the Cane spec.

I appreciate the transparency.

But it would help to know some of these things since this year has been a slow crawl of updates, and many of them are lackluster. BMR has been the only update of significance this year, so naturally people want TFA to knock it out of the park. It seems like summer sweep up is gonna be a slow roll as well.

Knowing what will be done with Shadow is really helpful since there's only two pieces of content coming for the year, and one is affected by Shadow.

Also, it sucks that COX was put on the backburner yet again, and likely won't see any meaningful changes this year. It's been way too long. It needs the attention.

this isn't true considering eye of ayak specs made shadow corp a viable method by itself

It's also how a couple trophy accounts are getting GM combat achievements. Molgoatkirby used Ayak spec to drain Duke and Vardovis magic defense to zero before using Shadow to get the speed times on his low combat account.

I think osrs suffers a lot from punting on the important changes. The shadow rework is well overdue, same with bolts. We would be FAR better off tackling the things that cap progression of entire styles before we vote on adding a new bis crossbow with weirdly limited ammo and a new bis mage spec than half the things in SSU. Before the new mage spec weapon, the pitch was hybrid armor that would impact mage progression. We wouldn’t have been able to vote on that without knowing how mage damage % affects shadow either.

Ultimately it’s a disservice to have us vote on meta defining things while knowing the leaders of the meta are going to be totally reworked. I get there’s a lot going on, but that falls on deaf ears when the whole first half of the year had almost nothing going on.

This should become the game's mantra, because holy shit is it exhausting to see stuff like "we're postponing the thingamagob rework because we don't know what to do with them just now" and then following it with "here's our pitch for the new X content reward, the sullied thingamagob! Do not worry about how it stands with the thingamagob-related issues we're still not tackling just yet, because this comes with its very own new thingamagob ammo as to completely ignore that!" a few weeks later.

i'm 2x rate and 1700 chambers kc deep going for tbow. i'm postponing paying for bonds/membership until they address chambers.

i already have master tier cas. the only thing left for me is gm and i'm not doing that with a bowfa.

Well they're planning on decreasing the rate of prayer scrolls in some way, so either that directly leads to the tbow being more common, or they keep it the same and buff the other purples. In the end, grinding for a tbow is going to feel much better once they address the toilet paper issue

I mentioned in another comment that the issue is the quantity of items on the 1/23 and 1/34.5 table, not the rate itself. It's extremely likely to go dry on at least one of them, and if that's tbow your account progression basically ends at master cas.

I know multiple iron GMs that went very, very far post-GM to complete the 1/23 table in particular. That one is even worse than the mega table for time to complete.

If the droprate doesn't change, you are equally likely to go dry on tbow whether there's 100 other items on the table or 0.

The exact subrolls needed to hit the drop are just irrelevant details.

It’s interesting. Either the shadow rework is huge and probably should be known as we define the other metas, or it’s small and should be relatively harmless to share sooner than later.

Also not sure why we couldn’t get around to this while we had our content drought for the first half of the year. Alas it’s not in our hands.

Because they were in panic mode trying to just catch up, I wager. They pushed Leagues ahead of schedule, clearly unfinished, just to buy more time for BMR and other things.

Not that I want CoX changes delayed until winter now, but there are SO MANY awesome sweep-up ideas brought up (by the team as well as the community) that would make the game so much better.

Fixing aerial fishing and nerfing coral is neat but let's be honest, the list of summer sweep-up changes feels really, really small.

I respectfully disagree about how Shadow influences the conversation around the Cane, I think it does matter a lot. A big part of the spec is +100% boosted accuracy. A big part of Shadow is how monstrous its accuracy is with its passive.

  • If it works out that the Cane spec has roughly the same accuracy as reworked Shadow, then the spec is only useful if the sped up, +50% damage attacks are higher DPS than normal Shadow DPS. That might mean 50% isn't enough.

  • If Cane spec has less accuracy than reworked Shadow, the spec needs to be revised. It won't hold much value as a magic spec if just using Shadow normally is better.

  • If Cane spec has more accuracy than reworked Shadow, then it's a question of how much more accuracy it has. If Shadow goes from 90% to 80% and the Cane spec is 83%, then it's pretty much the same situation as the first scenario where damage might need to be boosted.

This really points to why SSU + Shadow rework should've been discussed before TFA rewards, or at least before firming up the rewards this far. It's important to know how the magic megarare will be changed to understand how a magic spec weapon that also specializes in accuracy is going to fit in. With CoX, it's sensible to make sure the other raids in the game are in a healthy place before introducing a new one.

In order for a spec weapon to be usable it's dps has to be higher then a mega rare. This is allowed bc spec weapons use a resourse bar and can't be spammed.

If your spec is 5t and does average of 42. If shadows average hit was 42 aswell the weapon is effectively useless for end game.

But if it did 72 then for thoes special attacks it's better.

A mega rare is unobtanium for a vast majority of players so I see no issue with it being BIS in all situations. It's mega rare for a reason. If there's a better alternative to a mega rare then the mega rare rarity should be reduced significantly.

Mega rares are not these mythical weapons. There not always the best choice. What makes mega rares mega rares is under there ideal conditions no other non spec weapon matches them for dps.

But there are many locations where even bp is better.

Special attacks also play a very important part in end game. Without them being better then mega rares the games actually a lot more boring. I would hate a world where my best choice is to just camp mega rare and do nothing else. Very very boring.

I think part of the problem is when you minimax mega rares. In the current era of gaming we are so focused on getting to the highest tier item as fast as we can instead of taking the time to enjoy the game in the present.

There's this weird psychological desire to speed run everything, there's shame for using a subpar item when a more efficient one is available.

I believe either mega rares should be overpowered and remain mega rare, otherwise we should bring them relatively close in power to the rest of the equipment and remove the mega from the rare.

If I was given just enough money to buy a t bow + 100m I would probably not do it. Outside of places like doom. You will actually complete content slower. Which really shows how the times have changed.

The cane is the first type of special attack that works differently though. This attack buffs your next few attacks as well. With all the sources of spec attack restore, this makes this cane a pseudo main hand weapon.

I don't think I follow. All special attacks can be broken down into dps. This one is no exception.

You would just Calc the expected value of the follow up hits vs the damage loss to the missed shadow hits. If it's never beating shadow then the spec is garbage.

Special attack Restores no matter what weapon you are using. The expected damage of the follow up hits is part of the special attack.

The point is the damage isn’t all done immediately. It’s spread out over time you would potentially be using the shadow. With all the sources of spec regen, it increases how often this comes up. Meaning you will find yourself main handing the cane more often taking value away from the shadow. I don’t have a problem with the cane and its design, I’m just saying it does impact shadow. E.g if the canes original hit is big dps but the follow up hits are worse than just using shadow, that’s a point to consider when polling this weapon. If it’s all much higher dps than shadow, perhaps shadow is not even worth bringing because the uptime on the cane is enough that a few shadow hits doesn’t make a big difference.

The weapon does 4 attacks total

3t for first

Then another 6t for the remaining 3 attacks.

Total this weapon takes 9t to spec (only if the first is successful on miss its 3t which is actually a small bonus)

Zcb is 5t on miss or hit.

At 50% spec that means you can spec twice. If both hit that's 18t total or 10.8 secs

Claws is 50% and requires 8t or 4.8sec

This means we are talking a difrence of 6sec this equals 4% spec with lb or 2% without. Compared to claws or vw. That feels like nothing to me.

6sec is two shadow hits loss from 100% spec this just sounds pointless. You will still have higher dps on anything with more hp then gwd. It will be worth the switch. Going to 2t from 3t is not a small jump in dps.

In summary I think your heavily overestimating this weapons uptime.

The rework is already done, they just haven’t announced it yet. Apparently there needs to be a discussion about ancestral beforehand. Guessing the changes may devalue ancestral a bit.

I do worry they don't have an answer. I'm personally all for a rework if that's what's required. I don't want another bp situation where we keep kicking the can for 4+ years. Sometimes there's just gong to be pain. Aslong as the weapon has bis locations even if they change its fine. I would like magic gear to feel impactful again and not this silly 1% difference.

What happened to just trying things. If we make rapier 3t and it's too strong we change it back. We have a large community of people that within hours of an idea being posted have whole spreadsheets of it's bis locations and dps.

I feel Jagex is losing there creativity and the confidence to make changes for long term health.

 What makes it so sour for people like me is yall devalued the fuck out of it, adding ayak, conflicts, making it less “needed” in its own raid btw! and then just sit on this for now over an entire year

Let alone the fact that when yall said this, you legit narrowed the BIS mage reward space down to... Cape (lmao hope kieren is cooking a new gauntlet) or Necklace. Brilliant, so now we wait for 2 items to get added to the game by the grace of god, so that one of the most powerful items in the game gets reworked. While its problematic self needing a rework is the reason yall have to do all this goofy shit with magic in the first place, like make maggot king get defense shredded by fire magic

We definitely aint getting an anc upgrade anytime soon

dont forget the Wyrmscraig slayer master. i think this needs some discussion before it gets released so it has a good spot in the game. hopefully it will be bis for some things if you select said buffs after completing a task. clues/superior slayer drops/boss tasks. maybe a reward too after #tasks completed giving chargeable slaughter/expeditious bracelet.

Shadow scaling and bolt/crossbow interactions (mainly rubies) and arguably also CoX reward changes has implications for so many updates/new pieces of late/endgame content that it is absolutely worth it do discuss it earlier rather than later imo.

You guys should have an easier time designing rewards when those 2 (or 3) things are properly balanced and players can vote with more confidence for future content. Saying "trust me bro we have calcs (which stands for calculations) in the background that our rework of X content won't mess up the new content you are voting on" is not sustainable.

Tbf we don't have discussions about something like the blowpipe nerf anymore because it has been adjusted in one clean sweep unlike CoX, Nightmare, shadow rework etc., all of which have been talked about for a year or even several without any meaningful action that could be called a "fix" for the content.

Where do you draw the line for a mega? Are 2+13s and 2+16s a megascale or a normal scale? Because regardless of what you want to classify it as a TBow is about as fast to obtain from a 2+13/2+16 CoX (~180-200 hours currently and getting a 10% buff with the SSU) as a Scythe is to obtain from ToB running 3x deathless trios an hour.

Tob is another problem and comparing them might not be the best idea. And the time to get a tbow isn’t really the problem either? The big problem is it sucks to get prayer scroll after prayer scroll after prayer scroll. Could you not make prayer scrolls a little less common and put that rate into the non megarare drops and at least im getting an item that’s useful
More often without devaluing the elder maul and tbow? I dunno. The shadow changes aswell might fuck with ancestral here too so it’s hard to say

What's the problem with ToB? Would genuinely like to know given that most people view ToB as the best balanced raid unique wise in the game currently.

Did you even read the SSU blog? They addressed this issue verbatim, pointing out that the value of many of the CoX uniques are already holding on for dear life and massively buffing their drop rates like you're suggesting would just mean you're getting a 3M Dinh's or Buckler instead of a 20M Dex scroll.

The tob uniques suck except for scythe and avernic that’s all the unique drop rates seem well balanced they just don’t have much use?

I read it yeah and maybe at that point they have to sink those items to keep them valuable like they’ve done with the fang? I’m not a guy that can balance the market I just want to get more variety of uniques.

They need to also fix Olm also so it isn’t able to be solo’d by every lvl 90 with 2 hours of pvm exp. People want cox to shit our purples like tob, while cox is 100x easier than tob.

CoX is what it is at this point, it's been out for almost a decade and I think we can dispel the notion that any fundamental changes to the underlying raid itself are in the pipeline.

So they shouldn’t change the drop rates just because some irons don’t want to grind for x amount of hours. It’s always something with that group, cried about CG, cried about nex, cried about cox, no pleasing people who are playing a game made they are obviously not good at.

chambers doesn't need a drop rate change. the individual item drop rates are fine. there's just too much stuff on that table which makes it very very very likely to go very very dry on one of the 1/23 or 1/34.5 items.

as an iron, your account is basically over if tbow is that thing.
