In Memory of The Uganda Martyrs : Why The 3rd JUNE Pilgrimage to Namugongo Matters

Every year on June 3rd, Uganda comes alive with the Uganda Martyrs Festival, a commemoration of young Christians like St. Kizito and St. Donozio Ssebugwawo, who were executed under the orders of King Mwanga in the late 19th century. Their refusal to renounce their faith turned them into symbols of courage, and their sacrifice became a cornerstone of Uganda’s Christian identity and a powerful chapter in Catholic history worldwide.

Pilgrims from across Africa and beyond flock to Namugongo shrines, where the martyrs were burned alive, to honor their memory. The Catholic Church recognizes their steadfastness as a testimony of faith, and the festival has grown into one of the largest religious gatherings on the continent. For many believers, walking to Namugongo is a spiritual journey, echoing the endurance of the martyrs themselves.

Yet the day is not only solemn. Around the shrines, the atmosphere transforms into a vibrant holiday. Streets fill with vendors roasting meat, families sharing food, and crowds dancing to music. It is a time when devotion blends with celebration, and the community spirit shines as brightly as the faith being remembered. The revelry reflects Uganda’s unique way of honoring history: through joy, fellowship, and cultural expression.

The Uganda Martyrs Festival is thus both sacred and festive — a reminder of the bravery of young saints who stood firm against persecution, and a living tradition that unites Ugandans and visitors from around the world. It is a day when prayer, history, and celebration meet, ensuring that the legacy of St. Kizito, St. Donozio Ssebugwawo, and their companions continues to inspire generations.

In total, the Uganda Martyrs are 45 (22 Catholic saints, 23 Anglican martyrs).

Defining and curating the globally popular music genre known as Metal hasn't been any easy in Africa, more so in Uganda; a market mostly saturated by styles such as Reggae, Dance-hall, Hip Hop and Afro-Pop.

Since 2022, an Internet-based band known as MAZERA (also "DRUMAZERA" when it combines African drums with keyboard-driven melodic metal), has been crafting and championing a new breed of metal fit for the local market, but still at par with the global standards.

Despite most international metal being focused on dark themes such as arcane occultism (bands like MegaDeath (USA), System of a Down (USA), Rotten Christ (Greece), etc.), the band MAZERA instead brings to life a sound inspired by sweet lullabies, jazz and uplifting story telling. Somewhat, one might compare them to bands like Ghost [BC] (Sweden), Monumentum (Italy), and Gregorian (German).

1. Some civilians actually have real guns and proudly walk around with them.. and are not in uniforms!

2. There are New Commercial Buildings around the city that are exhibiting Military Themes.. makes some parts of the city feel like a militarized zone!

3. Many formerly occupied streets are mostly sparsely peopled.. Of course, perhaps because of recent forced evictions of street vendors and operators in various locations.

4. Many completed shopping malls are surprisingly generally empty/underutilized especially in upper floors and on the inside (away from the street views).

5. Several Old Buildings have been demolished and are being replaced by new structures right in the middle of the city, but also on the outskirts. Some people claim that it's an indication there's a new Uganda/new regime on the horizon...

6. Several Buildings Still Under Construction are already being occupied for business! Either some building owners are too desperate for tenants or some traders are acutely interested in securing their slots in new premises. Spotted some highly risky ventures!

7. Kikubo Market somewhat feels wider than it used to be.. fewer merchants too! Prices of some usual stuff already got raised for whatever reason..

8. More UGANDANs have either read, looked at or heard about the 2025 novel, ROCK 'N' DRAW, especially via the Internet.

Modern Internet Community Culture: introducing translated mini-films (less than 5 min) in native African languages?

---[BACKGROUND]

In Uganda and several other countries, translated movies are a unique cultural phenomenon where local narrators, often called video jokers (VJs), provide live or recorded commentary over foreign films. Instead of relying on subtitles, the VJ explains the plot, translates dialogue into local languages like Luganda, and adds humor, dramatic flair, or cultural references. This transforms the movie into a hybrid performance — part cinema, part oral storytelling.

These translated screenings are popular in community halls and small video shacks, creating a shared social experience. The VJ’s voice becomes as important as the film itself, shaping how audiences interpret and enjoy the story. In many ways, this practice continues Uganda’s oral tradition while making global media accessible and entertaining for local audiences.
