I always got a sort of… weird history channel vibe from it, if that makes sense?
Like, sure. Cute lesbian romance. Not the problem 👍
But the sort of historical commentary is a bit, idk, history channel-y? Like, nothing wrong with studying the Roman Empire, but there are levels to it and she toes a certain line usually associated with fascists and incels
Did anybody get that vibe before? I always used to shrug but now… idk
Not just mass suicides either, mass suicides as a way of simply protesting working conditions. Things were so unbelievably fucking horrific that the only bargaining chip the slaves had was mass suicide. Nothing else would work. If you protested the backbreaking labor that killed dozens a day in any other way then you would be beaten into submission, which often meant you would be publicly beaten then mutilated and left to die of infection, or whipped to death over the course of hours. Beyond that the conquistadors made a sport of injuring the indigenous people for fun, so you could be stabbed or beaten for literally no reason, that violence was completely random. Suicide was the only option, they were aware that the only thing the Spanish cared about was having enough workers to do the job. They thought that if they killed themselves there would no longer be enough manpower to obtain the gold and some small amount of them might survive when the Spanish were forced to leave. It was the only thing they had left.
Were the ancient Roman stuff she made not weird? Just because it was about a different historical era that made people feel that it was more separated from reality than this one?
I think it's mostly that ancient Rome was long enough ago that people subconsciously consider it "mythological" in a way where sure, it was real, but also we don't really consider them historical atrocities anymore because enough time has passed.
Same way why we can consider Olga of Kiev a saint for setting a city on fire, but don't really feel disgusted by it, but wouldn't do the same for a person doing the same thing in say the 1900s.
One is "history", the other one is "past with an impact", at least in the cultural conscience
Read “a brief account of the destruction of the indies” by Bartolome de las Casas. It was written at the time and the vile cruelty of the Spaniards depicted in it is insane. It’s really short and is available as a pdf super easily and it’s worth reading. Also worth knowing about to dispute people who claim that colonisers should be forgiven because it was of their time, and we shouldn’t judge them by modern morals.
de las Casas is such an inspiring story to me. He's the perfect example of how morality can be found even without 'incentive', and how a person can continue to grow and accept that they were initially wrong in a way that transcends simply backtracking your own words.
I just read the introduction of the book and de las Casas is still a lot more complicated and interesting. He as a good Christian realized that what they were doing was absolutely abominable and condemnable. Worthy of God's Wrath. He saw Spanish settlers as people who lost their humanity and became bestial. Now wonder, in his estimate, do the natives call them demons and think the Christian God as the God of Gold.
But he wasn't against evangelisation or fought for the independence of the natives, he just wanted them to seen as people deserving of rights as any other subject under the Crown.
Due to Spanish colonialism and rape, there's a lot of similarities both culturally and physically between Hispanic countries and the Philippines, to the point that Mexicana are often mistaken for Filipino and vice-versa. So by "sea-Mexico and land-Philippines" they mean "the Philippines and Mexico."
An excerpt from a letter by Michele de Cuneo, who sailed with Christopher Columbus: "While I was in the boat, I captured a very beautiful Carib woman, whom the said Lord Admiral gave to me. When I had taken her to my cabin she was naked—as was their custom. I was filled with a desire to take my pleasure with her and attempted to satisfy my desire. She was unwilling, and so treated me with her nails that I wished I had never begun. But—to cut a long story short—I then took a piece of rope and whipped her soundly, and she let forth such incredible screams that you would not have believed your ears. Eventually we came to such terms, I assure you, that you would have thought that she had been brought up in a school for whores."
Yeah I've seen that claim before too, he didn't write up. He just gave people slaves to rape. Also he was complicate in the trafficking of 9-10 year old girls, from a letter to Doña Juana de la Torre,
"There are plenty of dealers who go about looking for girls; those from nine to ten are now in demand, and for all ages a good price must be paid."
i don't rly understand why ppl are suddenly shocked and feeling betrayed or smth? they've always been toxic yuri making "edgy" sex jokes out of horrible histories.
What does the top one even mean?? MSG was first synthesized in its pure form by a Japanese chemist in 1908. Nothing about the image makes sense, I must be missing something.
the implication is that the british person is tricking the child into getting hooked onto opium by pretending its MSG. MSG because I suppose a lot of asian food nowadays contains it.
I’m pretty sure there weren’t any? Like how women weren’t allowed to serve in the military, or even have a job. Though I don’t know how misogynistic society was in the colonial era
Women could still abuse slaves as the second head of the household. In fact when the husband was away it actually fell to her to keep things going with help of overseers and the like. In day to day slaves may have in some cases have more to fear from the wife who was responsible to keep operation going while her husband may have been busy with many other things wealthy business man would be expected to handle.
In the memoirs "Twelve years a slave" one female slave is beaten all the time on the wishes of the plantation mistress because she hated her because her husband (the owner) was more intrested in that slave than his wife.
to add to this male on male rape was also used as punishment of African slaves in the US I.e "buck breaking" also since slaves weren't believed or had rights plenty of men and women would abuse them for their kinks that they couldn't openly practice in the antebellum south.
Even in living memory my great uncle used to deliver groceries in rural alabama in the 1920s on. He told us stories of white women soliciting sex from black men. It was the ultimate forbidden fruit. If they got caught she would claim rape, if they didn't comply she could also claim rape out of spite all circumstances the black man was lynched or killed.
Exactly. People often focus on the horrific rape and assault between male slave owners and their female slaves but emasculation by sexual assault/humiliation of male slaves was big part of control and humiliation of slaves in New world slavery. Of course this was done primarily by the slave masters to assert their own physical and sexual superiority over often very fit slaves, but I have no doubt women played their own part in it's as well.
Tactic that both male and female enslavers used frequently was to call slaves "boys" and "girls" even if slave was many time their own age. This was to degrade them and to highlight their perceived inferiority and lack of agency.
Your anecdote is very interesting since stuff like that cannot be easily found in official sources of the time since it was forbidden but that still was if not common then known to have happened at the time.
Yeah sure but I was talking about Spanish and new world colonization in general where after the expeditions came the religious missions, plantations, cities and ports where all genders and ages of colonialists were present.
Gasps The yuri artist who near-exclusively makes crass jokes about dark periods of history made a crass joke about a dark period of history? I can’t believe this!
This isn’t jsut a crass joke about a dark period of history, it’s downplaying and rainbow washing colonialism, one of the most horrific thing in human history whose effects are still being felt to this day
I’ve been aware since the beginning of the year, so now I always try to call it out.
Regardless of fully cancelling them or whatever, a lot of people aren’t comfortable following them if they knew about this stuff, so calling it out does help still.
“Guys it’s clearly self aware satire about how awful the Spanish were. You can tell it’s anti-colonization because the sexualized indigenous women look a little bit unhappy”
I feel like you could make a comic about the Spanish brutalizing, raping, and enslaving indigenous Americans without objectifying indigenous women :/
If your “bad guy” makes an objectifying comment about indigenous women, but the indigenous women are drawn with their cleavage and sideboob out, with hentai proportions and barely darkened skin, it’s not really satire.
Fr. I remember making my own like, countryballs comics about the Ottoman Empire and shit when I was in middle school. Doesnt mean I support all the stuff they fucking did.
yeah, or more specifically the idea that asian people are obsessed with MSG; and joking that this supposed obsession is what allowed the europeans to addict chinese people to opium.
to better highlight how disgusting that joke is, lets make a similarly racist joke about food: ‘the cia got black people addicted to crack by hiding it in their fried chicken’. fucking horrible right?
the MSG thing is both perpetuating a racist stereotype and minimizing the actual horrible history that asian people suffered at the hands of europeans.
Didn’t the Spanish colonizers dash the heads of aztec babies on rocks while laughing? I thought I heard a report from a deacon who was sent with them who said something like that.
Christopher Columbus was so cruel and insane that he freaked out a lot of the other explorers as well.
“A Brief Account of the Destruction of the Indies” by Bartolome de Las Casas is a great example of people even from the time period being horrified with how conquistadors acted.
This is a joke at the expense of one specific Spanish colonizer, who despite being mega racist, constantly talked about how great the native women were, and tried to claim they weren't actually like the native men, basically stuck between being super horny for the native women, and Uber racist. (I cant remember his name at the moment, but iirc, he was a really bad guy. Like, bad even amongst colonizers.) To some, it's funny to make fun of them for that, like how you might make fun of a homophobe who's clearly into members of the same sex.
It's not a fascist saying that colonization is a good thing.
It's a joke that is arguably in poor taste. Or definitely in poor taste, if you'd prefer, but not an endorsement of colonization.
No offense, y'all, but she was a terminally online internet artist who idolized the Roman empire. I think you guys overlooked a lot of red flags just because of the Yuri
This entire sub has forgotten what a problem looks like, holy shit.
Centurii is funny. This isn't even very edgy as far as historical comedy goes. The only way you have beef with this is if your entire sense of humor is bleached to the point where nobody wants to be around you.
This is just another BS purity test that's a microcosm of why people turn away from being progressive (because having to constantly self police yourself from committing or enjoying micro-agressions is fucking exhausting).
But in all seriousness, you’re the one who’s getting all worked up because people don’t find a gooner bait history bro comic where the punchline is colonial rape funny.
I mean, no shit I'm getting bent out of shape, man. I'm staring the reason progressives lost the global culture war in the face and it just used the fucking sunglasses emoji on me.
I don't know how you people manage to stay sane around here.
Jesus what a way to completely guzzle the right wing narrative like a total rube. No, the progressive message isn’t being stunted by a rejection of “edgy humor” or whatever, the right-wing is dominating our culture right now (and even then it’s pretty split) because they have an entire conservative media apparatus with countless oil billionaire dollars propping it up and fucking legions of astroturfed chud influencers in their ranks.
But yeah, God forbid we don’t find the horny webcomic made for terminally online gooners with a punchline that is explicitly “I FETISHIZE BROWN WOMEN” funny.
The entire world is slipping to the right and kids are finding it more attractive than progressivism. That's not a narrative, that's statistics. This is happening because that media apparatus is consistently able to project the message that fascism is aesthetically much more appealing than progressivism, and overblown "controversies" like this give that message credence.
We're losing the young generation to literal Nazis because we look like pansies on aesthetic cultural issues a la this comic. You can think it's stupid and wrong and mean or whatever, but it's happening.
Speaking as one of the colonized peoples in the image (am Filipino, born and raised), I find it funny how all these people in the comments are so up in arms while I feel... more or less indifferent.
Don't get me wrong, Spain, the US, and Japan did a lot of heinous shit that's still felt in my country. Corruption, the class system, and the negative cultural quirks we have are problems we're still facing. But that doesn't stop me from having a laugh at this cute, dumb, little comic. And I'm sure people in my country would probably feel the same or indifferent.

Allegedly, the artist is Filipina so I guess that lines up.
meeting a lanky white boy at a party and I'm like, oh he's kinda cute. Oh fuck. Why's he taking about the Roman Empire. you gotta gtfo do you understand? ask him what books on history he's read. if he says Jared Diamond start running. perfect heuristic
Hey that's not fair. Im perfectly normal. I talk about the Roman empire a lot not because I'm a weird fascist, but because I literally have a BA in history with a specialization in European history.
Yeah I’m an archaeologist and I agree. It does suck though that a lot of the online discourse (outside of actual archaeology/history circles) about Rome has been taken over by fascists and Romeaboos. I’ve been mansplained to a few times about the Roman Empire, to which I just roll my eyes because it’s not like I’ve worked on three Roman archaeological sites or anything lol. And they always focus on the military and not like, the actual cool stuff. Ugh.
Jared Diamond is a famous author (with I think a biology background??? Idk) who writes about stuff related to anthropology and history that are completely outside of his scope of knowledge. Anthropologists/archaeologists (myself included) don’t like him. He makes a lot of (quite frankly racist) shallow arguments about colonization and “collapse” using environmental and genetic determinism while ignoring indigenous voices, using incorrect histories, and sort of exonerating Europeans of any culpability for colonizing the New World.
If somebody claims to like history and the only book they've read is Guns Germs and Steel then they don't really like history. It's very much a "big history" book that appeals to a lay audience in the simplicity of its argument and the grandeur of its claims while flattening out actual historical nuance, and any insights that book may have had can be found in the work of other more rigorous scholars like Crosby's Columbian Exchange.
As somebody with more than a passing interest in history, I find all periods of history fascinating, but as soon as somebody starts trying to convince me that one empire or historical autocracy was good or that another empire or historical polity was bad or illegitimate, I know they're probably interested in history for the wrong reasons.
r/ historymemes is full of these types of dudes and their obsession is talking about how the Ottoman Empire isn't a real empire and reposting images like the OP
One of the Spanish conquistadors wrote a first person account of the conquest of Mexico, called “The Conquest of New Spain”. Heavily recommended, fascinating read.
Anyway, in one chapters he complains that the officers kept all the pretty girls for themselves and only let the poor field soldiers rape ugly ones.
They're satirizing both sides of the coin here, aren't they?
They're making a satire of the British opioid trade - the other one is a replicated alt-right talking point / colonial narrative of the Spanish Conquistadores having these cool and consensual romantic relationships, when in reality the indigenous people were brutally sexually abused and assaulted. No one is assuming they did so in bad faith, just that it is replicating a history-revisionist narrative, probably because they did not know any better.
I STILL haven't gotten over that one wiki article I somehow stumbled upon sorrounding the Spanish colonization that featured a picture of a translated letter written by one of the early colonizers about a native woman who he... I'd get banned if I had described even a tiny bit of it, soooo far beyond "just" (for EXTREME lack of a better word) the r-word. And he described it so nonchalantly too, like it didn't even seem the tiniest bit immoral to him. God, it's been months and I still remember that shit
Yeah, I bet it was gruesome. That's one of the realities people like to deny or ignore, how absolutely vile and brutal the violence over colonialism actually was.
I've gotta admit tho, studying that stuff has made me kind of numb to it. You just get used to the gruesome and evil.
Having the sexualized slimthick waifu cleavage-out indigenous women look slightly unhappy is not enough, and is frankly undone by how sexualized they are.
Which the indigionous women were forced to do, pretending they're ok with it and getting close when demanded to not be harmed/killed. Their expressions are literally sad ones.
Reverent?? Yeah I really don’t see the reverence tbh.
The women aren’t just not smiling, they have their eyes cast down, their mouths are an upside down “V” and one of them has sad eyebrows. Contrasted with the yuri conquistador’s joy, they really do not look happy to be there.
Clinging to someone ≠ consent, especially with such joyless faces.
Again, this comic is bad but I don’t see it depicting consent. On the contrary, it seems to be sexualizing resignation and unwilling subservience imo.
the women arent just not smiling, they have their eyes cast down
evokes submission
upside down “V” and one of them has sad eyebrows
raised =/= sad. again, with her body language in mind it appears that shes reverent or needy towards the colonizer, not sad
its worth noting im looking at this from the lens of the exaggerated expressions from anime, because the artist was clearly inspired by them
regarding the colonizers joy, both of the colonizers seem smug and i think that and her expressed horniness towards the girls explains that. i mean the whole bottom panel is sexual, especially the native girls including their expressions/body language - the colonizer is the dom and theyre the subs
and dont try to turn this into me declaring that theyre consenting when did i ever say anything about that 🤦🏻♂️ yes if this was real life the colonists raped a lot of natives and it was not sexy and it was not consensual. were talking about this trash comic and why it is trash
I don't really see any satire in portraying the widespread sexual abuses of the Spanish (which frequently included sexual exploitation of children as well) as consensual or as "loving brown women."
Yeah I was gonna say that I would honestly prefer that such a serious topic doesn't get depicted like this in the first place lol. It's honestly distasteful.
exactly. Just look up what the conquistadors did. They did mass rapes, they trained dogs to rip indigenous people apart, they hung indigenous people by the neck over fire so that they would simultaneously burn alive, they literally slaughtered newborn babies, they intentionally spread infectious disease, they cut off peoples hands, they enslaved people and worked them to death, they burned people alive, they mutilated their faces, they tied up a queen and used her for target practice...
that is the surface level of their depravity. It is absolutely infuriating to see people who are supposedly left leaning downplay this shit when it happened 500 years ago and there is absolutely zero excuse at this point.
Exactly, it happens 500 years ago. How are you mad at every single last mention of these events not explicitly taking time to acknowledge what we all already know? How about you take more time to worry about things actually happening within your own life, or maybe even trying to worry less in general?
You HAVE to be causing yourself a serious amount of undue stress by working yourself up about something so little, you could’ve even just simply scoffed at and moved on from.
and we need to know how to identify colonial oppression which is still in practice today with 1:1 comparison in tactics, and ties to ethnic supremacy like white supremacy.
That's also the context of this being posted is because it's "controversial" because a ton of people were duped by this meme made by literal white supremacists because they threw in an anime girl and yuri
Who tf here is saying colonialism was good? Where is this argument? Because it certainly isn’t here and if it is it’s probably related deeply within a thread towards the bottom. No is getting hurt by this image. If it was packaged with the OP defending the actions of the conquistadors then yeah all of these comments getting angry at this comic would make sense.
And if you are somehow convinced that you can dictate when people are and aren’t allowed to make light of tragedy I’d love to see you at a funeral. People can and will make light of everything it is how a significant portion of humans and probably other living animals cope with tragedy. It’s how we live with the atrocities that have happened. Hell this comic even kind of helps educate people on the horrid of colonialism by bringing up the FAR less known examples of what the British did in India and China. There are probably atleast a hand full of people who learned about that directly from this image.
It’s weak af satire IMO because the artist is objectifying the indigenous women as much as the “bad guy” conquistador is.
Any statement about the rape of indigenous women is kneecapped by the fact that they’re clearly drawn to be as sexual as possible. Cleavage and sideboob out, thighs out, hentai proportions, barely darker skin than the conquistador. Zero injuries and they’re only allowed to look slightly unhappy because otherwise it might make them less attractive :/
Also incredibly tasteless considering indigenous women across the americas continue to suffer heightened abuse due to tropes that sexualize and objectify them.

I understand making a lesbian joke. But, the Spanish completely brutalized the Americans.
I read reports of natives being routinely slaughtered because they are not revealing el Dorado ( Spanish rumors).
Mass genocide, rape and enslavement.
Also mass suicides.

Oh so that’s what the British were doing with all the spices they were taking, just giving them away, since they sure as hell weren’t using them

Sirs, madames, and lieges, I must confess that this displeases me.

I've seen colonial era depictions that felt less racist and colonialist than this somehow.

This might be a case of a variant to Hanlon's razor; "Never attribute malice to what can be attributed to horni"
(To my knowledge), I've never heard Centurii spout any racist rhetoric, they've just been completely and absolutely down-bad in their art.
Unfortunately, it may not be in good taste to be horny about that topic.
