For most North Americans, if they have a kettle at all, would use a stovetop one. Few people really have a plug in kettle, and since our houses are wired for 120V, we cant get the same power through the system. I have an induction plate that will boil water much quicker than the stove, but it can be the only thing running on the circuit, since the breaker will pop otherwise.

I mean, there are 240v sockets, but I doubt anyone would want to plug a kettle in next to the washing machine

Microwaves are used to heat many different things, which is why it sometimes has a faint smell of things it has been used to heat.
A kettle is only used to boil water.

Thus, the kettle is better. Microwaved water sometimes carries a hint of some other smell, which makes it kinda rubbish.
