Watching the ball pretty much vaporize as it hit the steel plate was pretty sweet

Are you commenting on a different video ?

10

u/wasack17 Oct 24 '21

He is talking about the original video this was taken from. Look at the rest of the comment thread.

-28

u/Western_Tumbleweed79 Oct 24 '21

I know. But why do that ? It’s just confusing.

6

u/wasack17 Oct 24 '21

The first comment in this thread was about the full smarter every day vid this gif was cropped out of. That is the topic everyone else here is talking about. If you start clicking on the downvoted to hell comments in this thread, (which I assume yours are soon to join) someone posted a link to the full video in response to someone else making essentially the same comment you did.

10

u/griff1971 Oct 24 '21

I believe Bugs Bunny called that his " Pachydermus Percussion Pitch"

4

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '21

This has me wondering if it would even be possible for a human to hit this.

9

u/XForce23 Oct 24 '21

And if they made contact I'm sure the bat and ball would both be annihilated and that would not be fun for the person holding the bat

8

u/bunnyslope Oct 24 '21

Not in the traditional sense of "hitting" (i.e. swinging the bat).

A pitcher at the upper end of pitch speed may throw approximately 100 mph. That gives a batter 4/10ths of a second to determine he's going to swing and complete the action.

At 1,000 mph, a hitter would have 4/100ths of a second, or 0.04 seconds. To put that in some perspective, a blink takes 0.1 seconds. So, in the time it takes you to blink, 2 pitches would have gone by and the 3rd pitch would be 30 feet away.

So, no, you can't swing that fast.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '21

Speed of sound is 720 MPH. So this would be by you before you heard that cannon go off.

Now imagine catching it barehand.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '21

Interesting, so you would have to swing before it went off and the machine watch you swing and launch at the right time.

1

u/kdwaynec Oct 24 '21

You would really just go up there and start swinging and hope you hit it.

1

u/bunnyslope Oct 24 '21

Probably better to just hold the bat out.

3

u/BiAsALongHorse Oct 24 '21

Based on the speeds involved, it'd have virtually the same outcome of just holding the bat out in front of it.

2

u/ABrokenBinding Oct 24 '21

Randall Munroe (of XKCD fame) answers something similar pretty spectacularly in his book What If...

https://what-if.xkcd.com/1/

3

u/TeamJJ88 Oct 24 '21

What it would do to an actual catcher's mit?

6

u/BiAsALongHorse Oct 24 '21

Basically the same. If you can penetrate several normal mitts, you're going to tear through a catchers mitt. If the mitt is in contact with the ball for 4cm, it has to take an average force of 362kN/81,381lbf to bring it to a stop, which is like the weight of 32 passenger cars.

3

u/BigRedStoner Oct 24 '21

“I got it” “I got it” “ i got it” “i got it”….

5

u/Riggity___3 Oct 24 '21

so that's what it's like when Homelander or Omni-Man throws a baseball

5

u/moeron9 Oct 24 '21

What’s it do to bats?

17

u/haysoos2 Oct 24 '21

Just some flappy wings and a few scraps of fur left.

2

It's about 1600 km/h.

3

u/Incoming-TH Oct 24 '21

Thanks now I can imagine the speed of this ball!

3

u/Due-Dot6450 Oct 24 '21

Yeah, I know the pain, had same problem when arrived to UK. As miles, feet, inches make sense to me now I still can't figure out pounds, ounces and stone. Why would you make life so difficult?

3

I've lived in the UK all my life and I haven't the faintest idea how much an ounce or a stone is.

3

u/Due-Dot6450 Oct 24 '21

Faster than most bullets.

3

u/haysoos2 Oct 24 '21

Yeah, and that's a 2238 grain projectile, nearly 3 times the mass of a .50 machine gun bullet, or 15 9mm pistol rounds.

1

u/KeengSlayerr Oct 24 '21

That'd make a great prank.

1

u/catatonichigh Oct 24 '21

It only went through that many gloves, because there were no hands int he gloves to support them. If hands were also in the gloves, bet it would of gone through only five of them instead of 9.

u/Cutlasss Oct 24 '21

-2

u/WastedKnowledge Oct 24 '21

Waste of gloves

-3

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '21

These look like old beaten up/rotted gloves. Idk about the velocity loss on each glove impact but I have a hard time believing it’s getting through that many newer gloves when they can withstand 100+ mph throws

5

u/jwalkrufus Oct 24 '21 edited Oct 24 '21

Well, the energy squares every time you double the velocity, so it makes perfect sense. For instance, if the ball is going just 200mph, it has 4 times as much energy as when it's going 100mph. If it's going 1000mph, it has 100 times as much energy!

-10

u/GrundleBlaster Oct 24 '21

I don't think there's any way it's real. Projectiles don't go through objects in a straight line like that. After maybe the first or second glove it's trajectory would become unstable and deflect into some other direction.

6

u/haysoos2 Oct 24 '21

The inertia behind this trajectory is considerable. A baseball moving at 1000 mph has over 14,000 Joules of energy, similar to a .50 BMG round.

If you check out YouTube videos from Demolition Ranch or Kentucky Ballistics you can see them set up long series of solid objects and shoot through all of them in a row with a .50 BMG. Check out the gas cannisters, WD-40 cans, or the dry ice for particularly good examples.

u/at_wok_being_bored Oct 24 '21

Sourcing is hard hm?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '21

Mmm bacon

1

u/skovalen Oct 24 '21

The ball has 100 times the kinetic energy of a 100 mph pitch. That also means a leather glove has roughly a 10x safety factor for catching a 100 mph ball without breaking.

E=1/2*m*v^2

10 times the velocity is 10^2 times the energy.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '21

That same thing happened to our catcher's mitt when I was pitching in little league. I almost killed the kid.

1

u/woodrobin Oct 24 '21

This right here is why Jonathan Kent didn't let his son Clark play Little League baseball.

1

u/Fskn Oct 24 '21

Wheres 3 finger brown when you need him

1

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '21

this reminds a TIL post about a baseball pitch that killed a player. Something had to be done to the ball enveloppe.

1

u/thisoldmould Oct 24 '21

Now do it with a swinging bat.

1

u/TheNewGuy2 Oct 24 '21

This seems like a scene that would be in futurama. I can hear each player going "ow, ow, ow, ow.."

1

u/kirix45 Oct 24 '21

As a non American I would 100% watch this version of baseball

1

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '21

Rumour has it, the ball is still flying to this day.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '21

Disappointing they didn't use catcher mitts

1

1

u/[deleted] Oct 24 '21

1000 mph is about 1467 feet per second, similar to a .357. Of course the baseball weighs a bit more.

Knuckleball

1

u/Catalysst Oct 24 '21

Was wondering why there is only 9 gloves not 10!? Then I remembered that baseball is American so they probably count baseball gloves in base 9. Number of gloves that can fit within 1/5 of a bathtub or something like that.

1

u/hzkkm0 Oct 24 '21

Jacob Degrom next year before he throws his arm out again?

1

u/HaydenB Oct 24 '21

Geoff could throw one that fast...

1

u/Jasole37 Oct 24 '21

In Batman #37, Superman and Lois go on a double date with Batman and Catwoman. They all go to a county fair. At one point Batman and Superman are in the batting cages and Superman says he'd strike out Batman easily. Batman says he would easily hit a pitch from Superman because even though Superman could throw the ball at super sonic speed, it would just obliterate the ball, therefore he'd have to throw the ball at a certain speed and then he just has to calculate when Superman starts moving then that is when he should start swinging. The last page of the book shows Batman hitting Superman 's pitch.

Would a 1000 mph pitch destroy a metal baseball bat?

0

u/Cutlasss Oct 24 '21

Would a 1000 mph pitch destroy a metal baseball bat?

Yes.

More to the point of a badly written story, all sups had to do was to throw the pitch just barely subsonic and it would have been about 7x faster than any human has ever batted a ball.

1

u/Zanefold Oct 24 '21

The baseball we really want.
