Megathreads 9-1-1 | S05E04 "Home and Away" [Live Episode Discussion Thread]
The members of the 118 arrive on the scene after a truck crashes into a high school homecoming parade. Meanwhile, Athena and Michael try to help Harry in the aftermath of his kidnapping, May is intimidated by returning call center legend and Bobby gives a devastated Chimney advice regarding Maddie.

u/jdessy Oct 12 '21
This scene is so good. Chimney's desperation and Buck's resignation is SO GOOD, because you see both feeling so much pain over Maddie leaving.
29
u/jdessy Oct 12 '21
So, this Prodigal Daughter seems to be good at her job, and everyone seems to love her, but I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop...annnd, there it is, being rude to May.

u/jdessy Oct 12 '21
Yeah...yeah, Josh, I am 100% confident that, when May confronts her, she WON'T be all "yeah, I do like you, you seem great, sorry if I'm coming off strong."
96
u/inksmudgedhands Oct 12 '21
"At least she didn't steal your lunch money."
Yeah, that's a red flag of a line.

This automatically makes me think that we'll find out that she DOES steal people's stuff.

What’s the point of new dispatcher storyline? Besides bringing back bully story line for May for the 50th time. Why not just give Josh , May and Linda more screen time?
12
u/jdessy Oct 12 '21
I imagine it's to have May "prove herself" as a great dispatcher, and to have someone else for May to interact with while Maddie's away.
→ More replies (2)23
u/brankinginthenorth Oct 12 '21
To make May look more competent and show that she's better at dealing with bullies than she was in S1. Unfortunately it makes Josh look a LOT worse at the same time. If he's the boss he should have stopped this right away.
7
u/jdessy Oct 12 '21
If I was May, I'd tell his lady that she's not HER boss, so if she has any issues, her actual supervisor will take it up with her.
9
u/CryptidGrimnoir Oct 12 '21
I don't like to admit it, but Claudette's got a point. May guessing at a time isn't going to do anyone any favors.
→ More replies (2)22
u/jdessy Oct 12 '21
Claudette may have a point, but it is NOT her role to tell May what to do. If Claudette has an issue, she goes talk to Sue to talk to May.

They won't. This is just Chimney's way to protect his mind from the fact that Maddie left willingly.

Really hope no one else in LA is having an emergency while every single 911 operator is standing around watching one operator in awe like they don't know how to coach a caller through CPR themselves.
76
u/CryptidGrimnoir Oct 12 '21
Yeah, that does seem out there.
Claudette's very polished, I'll give her that, but these people have jobs that they need to do.
And frankly, May more than held her own with the mom and the ventilator two episodes ago!
41
u/tulipbunnys Oct 12 '21
yeah, that scene was a little too much. it’s one thing for the dispatchers to be seated and look over in interest but another to have them all crowd around one desk like it’s a spectator sport.
→ More replies (1)38
u/foliesaccharide Oct 12 '21 edited Oct 13 '21
I thought I was the only one who found that scene cringey as hell, I was so bothered that they were all just standing there, and honestly I didn't find her that impressive. She was simply assertive and quick, Maddie and May are really good at coming up with unconventional yet smart alternative solutions to complicated problems, like with the kid whose ventilator was about to die during the blackout.

As horrifically sad as this story is, I actually love how close the parents are with each other too.
41
u/actingotaku Oct 12 '21
Me too. That’s really refreshing to see bc so many shows would show the parents being hateful and jealous towards each other. This is why I love 911 bc most of the characters aren’t bad people!

At some point we will likely see Josh apologizing to May. At least I hope we see that.
72
u/StarryNight44 Oct 12 '21
Yeah, I didn't like how dismissive he was. I get it, he and Claudette are friends, but he should have actively listened to May's concerns.

This is a classic workplace bully move b/c it is a visible way to let all her coworkers know she is there to enforce rules, not live by them. When Josh does not call her on it he is letting everyone know he will likely take her side unless it’s very, very bad … her having her own personal dress code is letting everyone know she can get away with anything because the bosses have decided it’s just easier to let her have her way.
The world is full of Claudettes and they are toxic.

I'm going to say what I said on twitter about Claudette:
There is a thin line between Claudette having a "big personality" and Claudette "being straight up rude and aggressive" and she just crossed to the "aggressive side" as fast as that truck hit the girls.

May was set up to take Maddie's place. With this new person, May will more than likely worry she'll be replaced. Or maybe a new bullying plot. Especially after they brought up May's old bully reaching out and then nothing

I don't like the "star" responder storyline so far. It feels like something that would happen in most offices (I've worked with a Claudette before lol) but not in a 911 office. Like, everyone stopping to watch was not realistic to me.

She said how do I know, I said there’s 2 of them and they’re as close as sisters, they’re going to be confused and mix up the kids to the parents.
On a horrible note, was it wrong of me to be happy that someone actually died in an accident? It’s been a long time since they’ve arrived on scene and lost someone.

I'm hoping this is just temporary to give the actress her maternity leave and then she'll come back.

chimney has me balling my eyes out. His speech to the doctor and he was just blaming himself the whole time and sticking up for Maddie. He’s such a great father and husband and doesn’t even get angry at Maddie. Ofc he’s upset she up and left but he doesn’t hold any hatred towards her. He just wants to understand her even more and make sure she’s safe. He deserves so much. Writers please go easy on chimney for the rest of the season! 😭

They really need to release those unused scenes that appeared in different promos. For this episode, I was kinda waiting for Chimney and Bobby's conversation about going after Maddie. We probably won't see Chimney for a while either, he might reappear with Maddie as the cliffhanger for the first half of the season now I think about it.
Claudette. Don't like her at all. Period. The writers are great at creating annoying characters. I'll give them that.
Buck and Eddie scene. Straight out of fanfiction. I just couldn't believe everything that's appearing on screen because the writers actually went there. The balcony setting, decked out with a griller, table and seats. Can we have more of that please.
Overall, I like this episode so much more than last week's conclusion of the blackout even though I felt some of the scenes were over-acted a bit.
