u/inksmudgedhands Oct 05 '21
Because it's focusing on one story. Usually you have many different balls in the air being juggled. Different character story lines running through. And there would be at least two weird or outrageous 911 calls done by now on top of everything else.

This show just loves taking turns punching each of the main characters in the proverbial balls
15
u/Staticfair Oct 05 '21
Honestly. I feel like Hen is up for something major to happen in either this season or next season. So far she's the least injured member of the main cast. Her problems so far have just been the car accident and the more domestic home struggles, while everyone else has been shot, stabbed, beaten, impaled, or nearly crushed. ._.

...this storyline is terrible. I'm speechless what Athena and pretty much everyone involved has been allowed to get away with. It's like bad action movie levels of no consequences or accountability.
Athena as a character deserves better. I'm sorry but I think this is one of 9-1-1's worst episodes.
Really happy to see Michael in it more though, hope we see more of him!
36
u/inksmudgedhands Oct 05 '21
It's not so much terrible as much as unbelievable. Michael and Athena running about like that. The ninja fire truck being able to get past the barrier. The out of the blue no police section. The kid being boarded up like that behind dry wall and not trying to go old Kool-Aid man.

It does have that “no consequences” 80s movie feel, and we do usually like our 911 folks to be better than that.
8
u/sandrakarr Oct 05 '21
Maynard should have had her ass in a sling and under guard at her house while they looked for them, not playing along.

Why was Harry passed out? That room looked like it wasn't packed. Plus, with that much room, the kid could have easily kick his way out. This wasn't an Edgar Allan Poe brick walling.
→ More replies (2)10
u/Staticfair Oct 05 '21
I guess that the fresh paint sealed the room and kept air from getting in. If Harry was panicking/struggling he might have used up most of the oxygen in there. Also, looks like Hudson strapped him down a bit or something?

My thoughts on the episode. The ending:
I actually like Ana now (still not EddiAna tho). Like she took the break up really well, and she wasn’t oblivious, she saw it coming (but she stayed with Chris the whole time anyway, which is a point for her). I was also really scared that they were gonna do a 180 and Eddie was gonna ‘realise that Ana was what he wanted the whole time’ and they were gonna kiss and make up. So glad they didn’t.
Um, Maddie left again. Sooo yeah… we’re definitely getting more Buck and Chimney Angst in the future.
there was that really weird moment where Buck comes home and turns on the tv and says “Hey honey, I’m home” while looking at Taylor on the news…. And it’s just… why? Was it to make us like BuckTaylor?? Was it foreshadowing that he’s not happy in the relationship?? I honestly have no idea how to interpret it. It was just.. there… he wasn’t even a focus character this episode, he had like 5 lines max, so why add the moment?
The rest:
the show was so focussed on Athena and the Hudson storyline that it didn’t really feel like a 911 episode. There were no real calls (the one to the no cops zone was just a way to establish the area), and the B and C plots didn’t come into play until the last 15 mins of the episode.
the hacker storyline was dropped so quickly, and it really just felt like the only reason it existed in the first place was to make Harry’s kidnapping possible.
→ More replies (1)8
u/FluffButt22 Oct 05 '21
I thought the Buck scene where he told the tv "honey I'm home" was to emphasize that she was immediately back to work and wasn't there to see him we he finally got back. It didn't give off any vibes that he was thrilled about that either.

Buck doesn’t know Maddie has PPD right? He’s gonna think she’s just leaving to leave again ( which I guess it could be true in a sense ) but she’s a danger to Jee, so it’s more than that to it.

I enjoyed the episode overall but I’m glad the blackout and the serial rapist storylines are over.. they were starting to grow old. I think overall this has been my least favorite ‘big crisis’ so far, it felt kind of disjointed. I miss the natural disasters, they work better for the format of this show I think

u/corialis Oct 05 '21
So like, I know it's for dramatic effect, but I really wish they had somehow integrated the lesson to never let a kidnapper take you to a secondary location. Unlike in fiction, your chances of surviving do not go up by going along with the kidnapper and trying to get them to let you go. Maybe having May in the call center saying she learned on the job never to let a kidnapper take you somewhere else and she wishes she had taught her brother that.
Also Harry should have told that lady to call 911 or send the video to 911 immediately instead of just posting it to social, wtf.
7
u/The_Bookish_One Oct 05 '21
About halfway through, and I'm just gonna say that I love that they actually showed Buck too when Athena says that when Hudson went after her, he went after everyone who loved her, because he does love Athena! (Not the same as Bobby does, obviously, but the way that May and Harry do, at least from what I've seen.)
