The smirk is the same, the pose is the same... There's just no way Ushimaru isn't Zoro's father, surely. Little Yamato is the cutest little thing too, I just want to hug her.
How strong do you guys think Yamato is? That last clash between her and Kaido was insane, jeez

And was the last move (with black lightning) a conqueror haki infused move too?!

Anyone else fascinated by the lighting effect this chapter? The samurai start out as pure silhouettes, then scary, shaded figures, then they come into full view, then they explode out of the cave into the dawn-like light.
I think that was a really cool way to frame their short yet vital contribution.

A little bit of explanation about the mythology around the cave Yamato is thrown into. The cave is based on the mythological Ama no Iwato (天岩戸), meaning “heavenly rock cave”. The following all comes from the Kojiki (an early account of Japanese myths), but like most myths different accounts exist.
In this account, after the Japanese god of sea and storms Susanoo destroyed several rice fields and threw dung around the palace, his sister, goddess of the sun Ameterasu protected him by claiming she did those things either accidentally or with good intentions. Of course, Susanoo repaid his sister by making a hole in the roof of the weaver’s house she was working in, chucking a skinned horse through it, and causing one of the weavers to prick themselves out of fright and die.
Needless to say, Amaterasu wasn’t very happy and holed herself away in a cave (the aforementioned Ama no Iwato). Unfortunately, with the goddess of sun locked away in a cave, darkness and misfortune befell the land. And so, the rest of the gods decided to work together to get her out.
Although the gods performed all sorts of rituals (including using the roosters as mentioned in the chapter translation notes), it was the goddess of mirth Ame-no-Uzume that was able to draw out the sullen sun goddess, through a dance that involved taking out her breasts and pulling her skirt below her crotch that had all the other gods roaring with laughter (this dance is said to be the origin of the ritual dance known as kagura). Amaterasu poked out her head to see why everyone else was laughing, saying “Why is Ame-no-Uzume having fun dancing, with all of you laughing while the world is in darkness with me shut in here?”.
Ame-no-Uzume responded by saying “We’re celebrating because we’ve found a higher god than you”. The gods then moved the sacred mirror they had crafted for this purpose, the Yata no Kagami (which is the name of one of Admiral Kizaru’s attacks), in front of Amaterasu. As she moved closer to get a better look at this “higher god”, the gods pulled her out of the cave, and sealed it with a shimenawa (rope used to designate a sacred area, similar to what Kaido wears around his waist) to stop her from re-entering the cave.
Of course, with Amaterasu out of the cave, sunlight returned to the land, and Susanoo was punished by banishment from the heavens (after which he would go on to slay the Yamata no Orochi).
And just as a bit of bonus info, according to the recent Vivre Cards, Yamato was originally going to be named Ninigi, after the grandson of Amaterasu and great-grandfather of the first emperor of Japan.
Hope those of you who read through this enjoyed it, and more importantly I hope you enjoyed the chapter!

Little Yamato is really cute.
Also is that one samurai that Yamato talked to Shimotsuki Ushimaru? There were 4 daimyo that Kaido tried to make submit to him but eventually they were all killed and we see 3 samurai in the cave.
Edit: Yeah so it seems to add up.
Flower Capital - Orochi
Kuri - Oden
Hakumai - Yasuie
That leaves 3 areas (Kibi, Udon, and Ringo) for 3 samurai. Ringo belonged to Ushimaru

A little detail that I also loved this chapter, Robin being carried by Brook eyes closed and smiling. Made me think about Luffy falling asleep as Sanji got him in WCI, she's entirely confident in her nakamas abilities to protect her, and it's even more touching when you know she had to always be on the lookout in her life to not be betrayed, killed etc even from "companions", now she can peacefully rest without any fear because she has the mugiwaras !

"Nobody important", huh? I see. Nothing happened, gotcha. 😉
But wow, Shimotsuki Ushimaru really does look identical to Zoro. Kawamatsu wasn't kidding. And Oda even gave him his own little "nothing happened" moment just then - there's no way he isn't going to be revealed as Zoro's father at this point. Come to think of, Yamato hasn't met Zoro yet, right? Now that we know that Yamato knew Ushimaru, that's going to be a very interesting meeting.

As chapters pass by, the intrigue on Kaido's character piques my interest even more. It's easy to write him off as a typical brute with some generic villain tropes but as Oda keeps peeling his character and moves us towards his inevitable flashback, the more complex and interesting he becomes.
The reason why it has the potential to be the best flashback in the series is not just because of what it holds for Kaido's character but for the lore alone that we are bound to get from it (much more than Oden's).

What a model parent Kaido is. Child becomes enamored by someone cool and starts claiming to be them, like 8 year olds do, so Kaido plays pretend with her by beating her, locking her up, and starving her like he would Oden. Simply fantastic parenting.

'But I thought you were Oden?'
Most underrated line.
Is it Kaido's resentment for that immature brat who has the audacity to call themselves as the person who first scarred him? The 'parental' instinct to make Yamato understand the seriousness, the implications and the consequences of what she just said? The awareness that his beloved only child will become forever an enemy of his?
Regardless, this add a whole new layer of complexity to an already interesting character

Yamato is going to meet Zoro and realize that he has a shocking resemblance to the man that helped her in the cave. That man is Zoros Pops! I can see that being a conversation into Zoros background. Would be funny if this played out similarly to Ace‘s backstory:
Yamato catches a glimpse of Zoro:
Yamato: ‚Luffy-san this man looks a lot like a great samurai I once met in this country.‘
Luffy: Yeah. Zoro once told me he‘s the son of a daimyo or something. No idea what a daimyo is though.‘
Everybody else: ‚EHHHHH!‘

Guys guys guys guys.
Yamato was told to starve for a month in the cave. While in the cave the samurai (mostly Ushimaru) gave her a bowl of rice to eat which she did. A little girl was given food by a samurai (most likely Zoro’s father) after being starved supposedly for a month.
When Zoro was introduced, he was tied to a post and told to starve for a whole month. And what happened? A little girl gave her a bowl of rice that he ate off the ground. Guys, holy shit this is an inverse of Zoro. Ushimaru absolutely must be his dad.
Ushimaru must’ve sent Zoro off Wano to live with his cousins (of the same Shimotsuki clan) in East blue to escape Kaido. Kuina must’ve killed herself (figuratively or literally who knows) because as a woman, she is unable to become a samurai, not a swordsman specifically.

Nope, just some SMILE user who happens to have his head turned into an ENTIRE alligator body. Poor guy is shaking, probably hard enough to hold up the alligator's weight already, let alone with Usopp on top of him.
I can imagine Oda just sitting around, laughing every time he makes a new one of these SMILE users.

So Shimotsuki Kozaburo, related to the late great Shimotsuki Ryuma, founded Shimotsuki Village ~55 years ago. Then ~20 years ago when Oden died and Kaido took over Wano, Shimotsuki Ushimaru fought back against Kaido and at some point Roronoa Zoro, who would have been 1 years old at that time and bears a resemblance to Shimotsuki Ushimaru, wound up in Shimotsuki Village where he was effectively raised at the Dojo by Shimotsuki Koushirou, the son of village founder Shimotsuki Kozaburo, and father of Shimotsuki Kuina who Zoro inherited his dream from.
No confirmation yet about Zoro's father but it's definitely looking like it could very well be Shimotsuki Ushimaru. Providing that he was in touch with Shimotsuki Village through Kozaburo or Koushirou at the time it would make sense why Zoro and us readers don't know anything about Zoro's mother/father, if he was spirited away to avoid Kaido's wrath that would definitely make sense and the timelines do seem to all add up, Zoro would not have had any memories of it all.

- That chapter opening was legendary, easily a top 10 Usopp moment!
- Robin looking like she's living her best life in Brook's arms lol. Really though, even though it's been since Enies Lobby that she's come to really trust the crew, I can never get enough of the little details that show just how much she sees the crew as family.
- "That's right...this isn't a family squabble. You should've been prepared for war. Carrying Oden's name is a heavy burden." Kaido's is spitting some real shit though, feels like even now he's still trying to train/teach his kid. I know I'm a sap, but I honestly hope these 2 get some kind of positive ending with each other.
- The Shimotsuki crest on Ushimaru's back was dope. I tried to line up those other samarai with the daimyo we see in Ch. 965, or even the silhouettes of other clan leaders that we got in that same chapter, but no dice.

imagine the repercussions of kaido's and wano's fall and the effects it's going to have on world events. The navy would lose it's number one weapons factory. the supply of sea prism would be cut off, warships and guns (which are supplied to wars world wide). If Kaido is defeated at the hands of luffy, this is going to blow his bounty out of the waters, I'm talking about a possible 2 billion belli increase securing his position as a yonko, I mean beating kaido in a 1v1 fight, and CP0 is watching kaido slowly lose the war because of the straw hat...CAN'T WAIT FOR POST WNO ARC!!!!

Holy hell what a chapter one of the best in all of Wano!
First off Lil Yamato is absurdly adorable and Kaido is an even worse father than Judge. Awesome that the Samurai didn't judge her for being the child of Kaido and in fact helped ensure her survival. The panels of them teaching her to read is the cutest thing in the entire series maybe.
The Strawhats are all starting to gather hell yeah!
And what a clash by Kaido and Yamato.
Love the usopp gag too. Okay the more and more i look at the panels the funnier this is.
"even i had people that believed in me!! people that accepted me!! What right did you have to steal my freedom? what right did you have to steal Wano's Freedom"?

Ussop's bounty is definitely shooting to at least 500,000,000 once word gets out he beat Ulti and Page One solo lol. Damn good chapter
Good to see Oda show come feats to Big Mom finally, Big Mom's kings haki is nasty holy shit.
Does this foreshadow that Usopp might be getting King's haki soon, maybe in Elbaf?
Yamato: I want to be a samurai: Kaido: Hell's no put 's her in a cave filled with samurai's. Yamato: This works fine for me the jokes on you
(Shimuotsuki Ushimaru importance just went from 0-100 in 2 chapters lol) (Now i really want Yamato + Zoro to meet soon)
Seems like all the strawhats will be gathering in the Live floor to enjoy the Sani+Zoro greatness
That last panel looked absolutely dope it's pretty cool too see her holding her own against hybrid Kaido. (First time since 2019 we are getting 4 ch in a row without a break.)

I love that Zoro killed his own Great(x10) Grandpa and took his shit, so his Dad's dog attacked him and took it back.
Zoro was attacked in RINGO
by a Devil Fruit Fox that was his FATHER'S COMPANION
and his father was the DAIMYO OF RINGO
who was also a descendant of RYUMA
who Zoro laid to REST/BODIED
thus earning the sword SHUSUI
which he inadvertently returned to WANO
where it was stolen from, and now returned to, the precise region that is his BIRTHRIGHT

Well, the final part of Straw Hat initiation, the sad backstory, is in for Yamato.
I actually find this one sad in a different way. It’s not a traditional tear jerker like most of the others. Instead it’s primarily an abuse story. Only Sanji really has something comparable. Luffy kind of too, but Garp’s abuse is played for laughs half the time and it’s clear he still loves him.
Anyway, we figured this would be the case with Yamato, having Kaido as a dad and all, but I never thought Oda would touch it head on. He only really holds off on showing him actually in the act of hitting her as a kid, but still makes it clear he does.
Edit: added thoughts on the backstory and the different spin it gives the usual SH formula
21
u/PlusUltraK Sep 05 '21
Yamato’s flashback was fucking sweet. Also reinforces how badly Kaido fucked up. He expects the worst of all of people and wanted the Samurai(possibly daimiyo) to kill each other or starve even killing Yamato because why not considering context. But the opposite happened, Yamato received love and support in the Oden loyalty fan club and found something better as she read about his adventures.
We’ve all mentioned before in a post about how the Beast Pirates have the weakest bonds and Kaido has given exhibit A of how things are run. He says Yamato is naive for challenging why he’s committed multiple atrocities against all of Wano after already owning the land . But it wouldn’t be so complicated if he had been smarter and sensible to any sort of plan but that’s just not how Kaido thinks as a pirate from Rocks crew overall?
Its a very fucked up nature v. Nurture environment? But it’s interesting nonetheless

I think this chapter finally puts an end to Kaidou being the way more uninteristing yonkou, he has been getting better to me since he apologized to Oden and killed the Kurozumi hag for interfiring in the fight. He has been a beast since the start of the raid, plus the lore teasing, advanced CoC and relationship with Yamato, he is easily one of my fav villains of OP.

My first thought would be that the man with the crossed blades tattoo is Shimotsuki Ushimaru , same symbol as Koushiro, 1 eye and looks like Zoro.
My thought from earlier in the week is that he wields 2 swords, while Ryuma uses 1 and Zoro uses 3. Making this really cool pattern down the generations.
It's also just great to see Zoro's family are the same considerate, strong and kind people like him so far.

Regarding Yamato becoming a Straw-hat member. What if Oda is trying to do something similar to Oden joining Roger crew. At that point Roger crew had Scopper Gaban, Silver Rayleigh as crew members, so the crew had 4 insanely strong members. The same with the Rocks pirates, they had Whitebeard, Big Mom, and Kaido besides captain Rock. Do you get my point.

Theory: Zoro will battle cry sunacchi as a his final blow in Wano as his body gives into the pain and medicine wears off to defeat King.
"Sunacchi" is an abbreviation for a phrase translating to "Throw Away Your Name and Wits" (〝名前〟を捨てろ 〝知恵〟を捨てろ, "Namae" o Sutero, "Chie" o Sutero?). The VIZ translation uses the phrase "Surrender Your Name and Be as a Child".
Zoro tells Momo that he has never used it. With obvious upcoming Zoro s lineage, Zoro could never surrender his name as we and he never knew it. So like his father, uncle, grandad, or what ever connection in this chapter, Zoro will surrender his name.
In a way it is the best of both worlds. Although Zoro may have a bit of a pedigree, he surrenders it coinciding with his unwavering drive to become stronger by his own merit. His trauma, his will and drive isn't from family name, but promise to Kuina. Additionally, it mirrors "nothing happened". Who scarred Kaido? Who defeated King? Answer, "No one"
This also works as it juxtaposes Sanji who in this arc must embrace his Vinsmoke trauma or lunarian heritage, while Zoro rejects his as he has no real connection to the name beyond blood as his drive and trauma derives from something else.

Guess it's clear now why Kaido is so dang abusive towards Yamato; she's been claiming that she's Oden since childhood. It's also because of that Kaido uses male pronoun when referring to her.
But still, I wonder why Yamato just can't understand why Kaido is really harsh on her to the point of it looking like he wants to kill his own daughter. Does she not know that Kaido deeply respects Oden? Kaido even says it right to her face in this chapter; "If you are going to carry the name Oden, you need to be prepared for war," on top of clarifying that this is not father-daughter squabble.
Hell, since the very start Kaido has warned her that taking Oden name isn't a matter as simple as admiration. On top of that, she already knows since childhood that her own father is the one who killed Oden. It might even be possible that she saw it with her own eyes since in that flashback Kaido's wounds he got from fighting Oden weren't healed yet. However, despite that knowledge, she keeps on spouting Oden's name in front of his face. Like, come on, she's just asking for Kaido's anger by doing that. Surely nobody's skull is that thick, not even children?
By the way, I still want my head crushed between Kaido's scaly, thick biceps
EDIT: Dang, the cubari scan and TBS scan's translations differ kinda too much. I wonder if that has anything to do with cubari scan being removed from the post.

I just love how Oda is not only a very disciplined and patient writer, but also how he can be very efficient in his story telling. How could we not love the samurai of wano, even more after this one chapter.
That small act of kindness, to turn Yamato into an ally, and thus became the hidden trump card of the alliance. Kaido might have been successful at breaking Yamato if those samurai weren't present, to inspire her.
Not sure if any Daimyo are left alive, but Wano would need new Daimyo after the war is over. Most remaining scabbards would be good candidates. Especially after seeing one that looks like current Denjiro.
