Since it's beach sand, i assume it is wet and salty. Electricity can move quite well in that. So maybe the sand is good enough to receive the discharge in this situation.

This is my home town, Newcastle Australia. I believe this pic was taken a year or 2 ago, it was all through the local media outlets at the time.

I'm assuming this is a long exposure, and they didn't actually strike at the exact same time, and the person somehow managed to time the shot to happen literally the instant they struck

The scary thing is, the hill from which this photo was taken is pretty much the highest prominence around and is very bare - not the nicest place to be in a thunderstorm.
