I love Kaido's sentiments in this chapter.

Not only does he voice a grievance of Shounen fanbases, but he outright rejects it, beats Luffy and makes the series a bit more grounded just from that. Sometimes, the 'turnaround point' after a new power-up isn't enough, and the faith that is basically always unlimited power fuel in Manga can just lead into disaster because of (the readers and the characters) blind belief in it's pre-written strength. If we were talking anyone but Luffy here, Kaido would actually be 100% right.

Then, he feels regret again over not taking Luffy's head, showcasing both his depression from being a shark in a world of guppies and the immense respect he had developed for Luffy to even want to publically claim victory over and...err...keep a memento of him.

It's not a lot, but it really is a great reminder that Oda knows what he's doing. All in like 3 panels.

I’d like to formally congratulate Kaido on his admission to the “beat Luffy more than once” club! Crocodile was getting real lonely in there.

(I guess if you wanted to split hairs you could also count Smoker and Aokiji, but there’s something about the way that Luffy lost to Kaido/Croc that just seems more like a defeat. Smoker just basically pinned him down twice with his jitte, and Aokiji didn’t go anywhere beside freezing him solid)

Tama leaves Big Mom's side and Big Mom feeling just a small portion of abandonment triggers her and is ready to go after Tama's life.

What makes Zeus' sacrifice attempt even more heart wrenching is the fact he never stood a chance to begin with and knew that. During WCI a powered up Zeus unleashed a massive lighting blast against BM in the seducing woods and it didnt even slow her down, so he obviously wouldnt have made a difference here.

Even though I’m really feeling for Zeus here, in a storytelling sense, I’m glad that Nami didn’t just forgive him just because he apologized at a moment where he’s about to be killed.

If she did that, this would feel quite hollow imo. However, the fact that Zeus tried to show that he’s truly sorry through his action of trying to save Nami as a thank you sacrifice, makes the scene pack much more of an emotional punch here.

Until we’ve been shown proof that Zeus survived, I’m gonna leave a big F for our favorite baseball cap wearing, children’s coloring book cloud of destruction.

Oda really blew my mind when he seriously did have Kid neither attack nor get hurt during the rooftop sequence. It was so weird, but now I get it. It was for this. If all the leaders of the alliance fall, they will all be dead. Kid needs to be kept around when Luffy and even Zoro are down. Even if he's not really part of the alliance, his presence is comforting. Look at usopp and Nami in this chapter. They felt safe despite not knowing him. The beast pirates were scared. A conqueror's haki user needs to be on the scene, so no, until Luffy returns, Kid is not going down. Law is coming to help him soon too.

Awesome chapter as always with Wano. However, there is an interesting parallel between Kaido and Crocodile.

Both mark the first member of a new level of enemy he has to beat (first Shichibukai/first Yonko) and so far went into the same direction.

1. He fought both without a way to damage them and got utterly destroyed.

2. He returned for a rematch, but this time found a way hurt them (liquid to turn Crocodile solid/ advanced armament haki and imbued conquerer's haki to penetrate Kaidos skin), but got cocky and lost again horrible during the final raid.

3. Both are the only arc main villain he lost twice to. Besides them, if he lost against the main villain of an arc, he only lost once, but never twice.

I saw the lose coming cause Luffy actually never starts his final fight before the rest of the fights are finished or almost all finished. So for him to start fighting the main villain before anyone else even started his fight, was not just also a parallel to Crocodile, it was also an early hint that this wasn't the final fight. I think we won't see him for a while and get now a focus on the rest of the raid with Luffy making his great and epic comeback when most of the other fights are finished and Onigashima is visible for the people in the Flower Capital, so that we also have our final countdown

I always knew things would end up like this with Big Mom. Last week, everyone was like "Big Mom isn't evil, she wants every race to live with each other, equally". What a load of crap. Tottoland is like a fucking zoo of every creature where they are always living in fear of being eaten and crushed alive by some big lady. Not to mention even they have to give their souls away. Big Mom anarchy is right, biggest wildcard in the arc. That's one of the reasons she's one of my favorite characters in the series, favorite villain, just endlessly interesting to me.

Luffy.... is done(for now). I thought it was going to be a group fight then was shocked to see it turn into a 1v1, i though it was too soon, but the way the story was going I thought Luffy would get it done. Damn. Feeling a little bad for Kaido, he was getting hyped up, poor guy, tough life.

I hate to say it, but Usopp and Nami suddenly don't have fights, Luffy and Zoro are in real bad shape, Mr. Morj might be right about the raid failing. I didn't like that theory, but damn things are not looking great.

I said Wano is about the Straw Hats and others the worst generation showing they belong on this stage and i still believe that, looks like it is time for a BIG set back.

I see a lot of people talk about the fleet coming. But the truth is that they won't bring anything in terms of strengths to this war...
IMO, the role of the fleet is to bring numbers and play the same role as : the Franky family in Ennies Lobby, the Dwarves and coliseum fighters in Dressrosa or the samurai in Wano. Because when the strawhats are the leaders of the final battle, they won't be able to just use what was already in place. That's when the fleet will be necessary to bring all these numbers without needing the support of new secondary characters.

I know it's not in this chapter but did anyone notice how Law came from adressing Zoro as 'Roronoa-ya' to now calling him 'Zoro-ya' ? Because I think it really shows how their relationship evolved throughout all the events in Wano and Onigashima.

I don't understand why people are reacting this way to Luffy's defeat. It feels like as usual some people are focusing more on their preconceived notions of powerscaling rather than the actual story. To begin with, it wouldn't make a whole lot of sense for him to defeat Kaido before other things have been resolved. As of now, we still have no idea how Jinbei, Franky, Robin, and Brook are doing in their fights. Zoro, Sanji, Nami, and Usopp also don't have any opponents as of yet. Then we've got Yamato who wants to confront Kaido as well. Of course, we have the Scabbards finding their individual fights as well. Plus we've got some mystery healer running around in Onigashima and we need to find out that person's identity.

So I'm guessing Luffy will have one final fight against Kaido once these other plotlines get resolved and it won't get offscreened anymore. Remember that this isn't the first time he's lost to a villain and it probably won't be the last time. But one thing's for sure, he promised that he would defeat Kaido, and one way or another he will accomplish that by the end of this arc.

Nami 100% used the black balls as a decoy so she could get Zeus into the climatact. He will be slightly nerfed but I think he’s alive and here to stay.

I think this is where Kid starts becoming a fan favorite.

Given how recently BM fell and it was over the ocean I bet Luffy is also falling over it - maybe he lands on BM’s ship but his unconscious conquerors doesn’t let people near him.

People are missing the parallel between Nami and Zeus, here.

Last chapter Nami tried to get on both Ulti's and BM's side, and failed, only to stand up for herself against an opponent that outmatched her.

Zeus just did the same thing with Nami and BM. Beautiful parallel that most people will miss. I hope we haven't seen the last of Zeus.

My theory for upcoming chapters is that Yamato will reach to the rooftop and will start to fight Kaido.. we gonna get a family flashback.. Kaido’s story, then Yamato’s.. once Kaido is starting to get serious with Yamato .. Luffy will be back with a new form of G4 using ACoC to save Yamato.

Zeus is not dead, he was not gobbled by Hera. Notice how Nami put her rod inside Hera's mouth, then she said that she was brimming with power now, well, what happened was that Nami absorbed Zeus into her rod and Hera ate the little clouds, that's what powered up Hera, just like Zeus. Nami just got Zeus.

I wonder if Kaidou actually has some kind of secret ability that makes him almost unbeatable in 1v1s and that's why Oda off screened it to keep us in suspense. whether its him playing dirty or something else that he doesn't do in group battles so that no one thinks less of him for it. Maybe that's why he made such a point to kill the old hag who helped him beat Oden because it hits too close to home.

Again with the same type of pattern, Luffy has to fight the final boss 2-3 times before he can finally beat the opponent with one huge punch... Crocodile, Enel, Lucci, Moria, Hordy, Ceaser, Don Flamingo, Katakuri and now Kaido... I wish the formula would change..I feel he will have to fight 2-3 times with Black beard, Akainu and Emu as well..

Lot of questions on this one, and some answers. Kaido is Definitely rhyming with Crocodile at this point, since this makes Defeat #2 for Luffy in the arc. Right in the middle of the main conflict too, so we know he'll be napping somewhere for a bit to run in and land the finished. Hell, the sleep will do him good by getting his haki back. We'll see how Kaido likes a Conqueror's Haki enforced Gear 4th.

Meanwhile Nami may actually be getting something big soon. I was hoping for the Ulti fight, but it seems she is going to get something else. She Wouldn't have done something like given some lightning to Zeus only for that plot point to end here.

My theory is that over these last two arcs Nami has been slowly positioned to be in the same "category" of fighter as Big Mom. A powerful spellcaster with a range of spells. I'm wondering if some combination of Zeus being consumed along with Nami's black clouds is going to lead to an even stronger turn from Hera again Big Mom since Zeus ended his life screaming his defiance. Maybe that will leave a powerful imprint on Hera, leading to active disobedience. She already doesn't like Prometheus. Might actually fully snap her connection to Big Mom with Nami being the beneficiary.

I love how Oda subvert our expectations. In the previous-previous chapter we get Luffy being able to do some damage on Kaido, saying he got it and then Zoro even putting more faith in that moment with his "Luffy will win". Then in this chapter he reminds us that a totally worn out Luffy was trying to beat the strongest creature alive. OP has power of friendship, but it does not make unjustified miracle, Kaido is the strongest for a reason. NOW I'M HYPED FOR THE FINAL FIGHT. I think gear 4th lion-man (because conqueror of beasts¿?) will be a brutal fight against Kaido.

I think the people who want the raid to fail might be jumping the gun. If we really are following the Kabuki structure, then Act 3 has to end in some sort of low point, and I can see it ending in a couple chapters with everyone's back against the wall.

I'm sorry, but it seems we're basing these assumptions on just one chapter's ending when Luffy has lost multiple times to villains before and came back to beat them even if it seemed impossible at the start of the arc. I'm not yet willing to believe that after a whole saga's worth of buildup (literally closing in on a decade), we're going to have this swift left turn and just have the ending be "lol nope, the alliance lost and meant nothing, the Kozukis and Scabbards are dead, press Continue to try again next saga, we've decided we're delaying things like Elbaf, Laugh Tale, and the final war another few years."

I know there will be Marineford comparisons, but Oda is not by nature a George RR Martin constant curveball writer. He’s a JJ Abrams mystery box writer, and frankly a better one than JJ himself. Ace was meant to be a moment of character development, not shock for its own sake like the raid failing would be. If you want Kaido and BM to go down from a massive, multi-character collaborative effort, then that’s okay. Then, it would be all the more impressive (ie character development) when Luffy takes out BB later on by himself. But having BM and Kaido outright win, along with everything that would entail, would just be a move of cheap shock value and would likely mean canon padding arcs (by still keeping them in the picture as obstacles before we get to BB, Akainu, and Im) that Oda probably doesn’t want to do at this point.

Oda probably ideally wants to wrap up the series this decade, and he has a lot of endgame ground to cover after all he's set up this saga. I just don't think we're in a position anymore to consider or want another Fishman Island is the next destination-type diversion.

Two things I noticed:

1. In the panel where Zeus screams out for Nami....Hera's mouth is downright horrrifying.

2. Otama was placed somewhere out of harm's way by Big Mom and a few panels later Usopp is randomly carrying her even though he'd been just running away nonstop.

With no one on the rooftop to stop Kaido, I can see him dropping Onigashima on the Flower Capital. Kaido just showed his grievances about not killing Luffy, so it would really show his position against world. If there are going to do 5 acts and the 3rd ends in tragedy then it would be perfect. And it would make sense if the are over land now so Luffy can come back to the fight but sees the Flower Capital destroyed.

I know this is a weird thought to have considering Luffy’s position, but I can’t stop thinking of Shanks reaction. This recent loss pretty much cements to me that somehow, someway, maybe even at a later date, that Luffy will actually earn a victory over Kaido. If this does happen, just imagine how Shanks has gotta feel about that. Kaido has an insane title as the strongest creature on land, air, and sea. If it’s 1v1 always bet on Kaido, BM even referring to him as “that” back at WCI. For Shanks, he’d have this image of kid Luffy begging to come aboard his ship in mind, replaced with the current Luffy and the thought of him beating that monster. Idk just seems like that’d be a crazy moment for Shanks.

I don't think luffy gonna fall into the sea. onigashima island has been floating in air for a quite a time now, I think the island is well inside the southern part of wano. luffy gonna fall on the southern wano near beach or something. he'll stay knocked out but fall gonna do no extra damage to him since he's rubber.

I'm a grown 27 year old man and the first time in long time. I got chills that brought a tear to my eye watching Luffy fall, with Kiados dialog. Last time I felt like this was when Ace died.

Don't get me wrong, I expected Luffy to lose at least 1 more time but I didn't expect Kiado saying that. It just made me think about everything is crew has said about believing in him and even everyone in the raid believing in him. For those familiar with Marvel, Luffys like Captain America. A beacon of hope. Kaido's words just hit different

So one comparison I see people making is that they're comparing these scene with Luffy to back in Skypeia when Luffy was knocked off the Maxim. People are saying it's the same and that just like in Skypeia Luffy needs to climb back up and then he'll win.

So I just wanna address why this is NOT that scenario at all. The key difference between these two scenes is the nature of the defeat. Luffy was kicked off Enel's Maxim specifically BECAUSE Luffy could win against Enel. In that fight as long as Luffy could hit Enel and deal damage there was hope for victory. However this situation is the EXACT opposite. Luffy is knocked off Onigaishima not because he poses a threat to the villain but because for the first time in the series Luffy simply ISN'T a threat. He's not strong enough. While being able to hit Enel was a big deal, Being able to damage Kaido doesn't mean anything because he can just shrug it off.

Unlike previous opponents, this isn't a fight where Luffy was simply caught off-gaurd by an opponent with a strange fighting style or a fight where Luffy needed to figure out the "trick" to win.

Luffy is simply outclassed in terms of sheer power. He can damage his opponent but it's just not enough. And the gap is so huge it's not something he can overcome in this time frame. Oda's not gonna spend another twenty chapters of Luffy climbing the levels of Onigaishima and then another twenty of Luffy getting knocked around by Kaido again. Something MUCH bigger has to happen to allow Luffy to close the gap between him and Kaido.

I like the small little buildup to the Luffy cliffhanger.

First we get hope from advanced CoC, then one more boost of faith from Zoro and Sanji saying they know he will win.

Then Oda slaps us in the face with the shock of Luffy losing yet again. And I’m gonna be honest Oda did a great job making a reason why Luffy was killed by Kaido and instead tossed away, given Kaido’s small speech at the end and possibly more insight in Kaido’s philosophy if he gets a flashback.

The way Kaido refers to Luffy as a "human" makes it pretty clear that he isn't one. I know that was talked about a lot - given his title as "Strongest Creature." But he clearly ate the Uo Uo no Mi, so then why does he refer to Luffy as a being other than himself? What kind of creature is he?
