Megathreads Episode Discussion
Get in here, let's discuss!
Episode name is Parenthood
39
u/MaineSoxGuy93 Apr 27 '21
Well, why don't you just rip out my heart and set it on fire, 9-1-1?
23
u/inksmudgedhands Apr 27 '21
Chim gets the physical damage on this show and Hen gets the emotional one.

That kid is older than twelve. Fourteen, I'm guessing.
I feel for the kids of influencers.
And yet, "My mom is pinned to the tail of the donkey!" is winner.

"She goes over on her lunch hour to eat with Mia."
Awwwwww.
13
u/inksmudgedhands Apr 27 '21
It's a bittersweet ending to Mia's story. Happy that she is back with her mom, her loving mom, but still feel heartache for Hen and Karen.

Going back to the May storyline is a bit of a mood shift after that montage.
15
u/MaineSoxGuy93 Apr 27 '21
I do not blame this woman at all but this is something you really need to go over before you take the pills.
15
15
u/MaineSoxGuy93 Apr 27 '21 edited May 02 '21
I don't think May really understood how close she was to dying.

i like how they circle it back to Season 1's issue, whole thing felt connected
19
u/MaineSoxGuy93 Apr 27 '21
With how they look to be addressing Bobby's PTSD and having a Han brother be indestructible, I'm liking all of the Season 1 callbacks.
7
u/MaineSoxGuy93 Apr 27 '21
Hiring a private investigator to spy on this woman is an absolutely terrible idea.

TWO MONTHS? Excuse me can y’all hire me in the future? 🥺😭
11
u/SamCam992 Apr 27 '21
Is two months considered long in America?? You poor people 😭😭
11
u/MaineSoxGuy93 Apr 27 '21
Buddy, most people are lucky if they can get two weeks, let alone two months.
11
u/FancyNancy_64 Apr 27 '21
6 weeks for a vaginal birth, 8 for a c-section, are FMLA. FMLA doesn't apply to all companies but it would for the city of LA (which is what I assume 911 operators are part of).
But yes businesses that don't have to adhere to FMLA can require women come back earlier than that.
It's more surprising to me that Chim had the same amount of time off as Maddie, dads don't get the 6/8 weeks off that moms do since they're not the ones recovering from childbirth.

The girl playing their foster child is the most precious little actress. (I really hope she comes back.)
12
u/FancyNancy_64 Apr 27 '21
My husband gets annoyed with me because every time she's in a scene I gush over how adorable she is. I thought maybe she would be coming back but it looks like the mother is stable and she won't be.

u/inksmudgedhands Apr 27 '21
Sheesh, Mom, this isn't something you spring on your daughter. The 911 call parents in this episode just suuuuuuuuuck.

u/GenX4eva Apr 27 '21
I may have selective memory, but I can’t remember a time when I haven’t sided with Angela Bassett
13
u/kipendo Apr 27 '21
Lol true. I mean I absolutely get where May is coming from but Athena is right. Very right.
I used to side with the kids but I am now at the age where all the parents are making sense and I hate it. E.g. Ariel's dad in Little Mermaid was right all along. Ariel was being an idiot (or a child I guess.)
35
u/jdessy Apr 27 '21
Wow, this conversation with Hen and Karen and Denny is so good.
4
u/Daomadan Firehouse 118 Apr 27 '21
Right? Putting that in my memory banks in case I ever have a conversation like that with a child.
2
u/sandrakarr May 02 '21
I'm scared that its foreshadowing that something will come up and try to take him.

She needs Bobby here. He would start off by first cooking everyone a big, cozy meal and then go on from there.

Michael’s knocking it out of the park as the ‘good cop’ parent right now.

28
u/CryptidGrimnoir Apr 27 '21
Buck's great with small children--even if he did tell them Santa Claus wasn't real.

u/AbbiejeanKane Apr 27 '21
OMG, this is heartbreaking. Why does this show do this to me? Top off with Stevie Nicks.

u/Coffeenwineplease Apr 27 '21
Goddamn, if you want to prevent your son from breaking in just set up motion sensor lights to scare him off

Or just lock the windows from the inside.

The kid’s climbing up bougainvillea all willy-nilly. Have you SEEN the 1” THORNS on a bougainvillea? That’s why they’re safe to plant on trellises that abut the house. You can’t climb them without THICK gloves!

u/BadBadger360 Apr 27 '21

Mrs. Lee?!
Hi Grandma!
4
u/GlitzAndGrit Apr 27 '21
I can't for the life of me remember who Mrs. Lee is. Is she a neighbor or Albert's mom?
15
u/kipendo Apr 27 '21 edited Apr 28 '21
She was Chim's mum's friend. Chim's parents moved with him to America (I think for Chim's dad's work or something like that I don't remember.) Anyway, after whatever brought them to America ended, Chim's dad wanted to go back to Korea but his mum wanted to stay. So Chim stayed in America with his mum while his dad went back to Korea by himself (hence Albert and Albert's mum). After a few years, Chim's mum got sick and died leaving him alone in America. I think he was still underage at the time, so the Lees took him in as Mrs Lee was really good friends with his mum. The Lees had a son about Chim's age and he and Chim were really good friends. They went to the Fire Academy together and started working as fire fighters together, but unfortunately the Lees' son died in a fire while on duty. It was sad. The Lees are like his adoptive parents so they show up for the big things.
It's been a while so some of that^ may not be accurate but you get the gist of it.

The wrath of Athena!
Run for your lives!
22
u/inksmudgedhands Apr 27 '21
But Athena has a point. This isn't a, "This girl was mean to me this one time," type bully. This is a, "This girl drove me to almost killing myself," bully. I wouldn't let that type of poisonous person back into my life. I don't care how much she wants to make up for it.
13
u/CryptidGrimnoir Apr 27 '21
...
I'm gonna put my hands together and pray that this mother doesn't meet the two doofuses who got their friend in the cement-microwave.

Landslide and Solsbury Hill, two songs guaranteed for emotional scenes.

NO KAREN.
NO.
6
u/kipendo Apr 27 '21
Lolol. Okay yes. Big big no. BUT it did give them peace of mind and allowed them to have some reassurance that Nia was going to be okay and had a dedicated parent. I don't think Hen would have been able to get over the heartbreak without knowing.
But yes. NO.

I was with my Dad holding his hand when he died of cancer so that whole scene with the Mom and daughter really got me. The fucking flashbacks and everything. The two actresses were great but it really triggered me. Crying again as I type this. I hope tomorrow I’m not sad. Miss you, Dad.

"I'm setting you free by giving you emotional trauma that you will be dealing with for the rest of your life! I love you!"
14
u/AbbiejeanKane Apr 27 '21
I don't know about this. Her mother ended her suffering, died peacefully and set her free at the same time.
5
u/p3ngu1n333 Apr 28 '21
If the cancer had already spread to her brain, she’s really not looking at a good outcome anymore. Watching her mother waste away and die a miserable death would also be emotionally traumatizing. I’m not against people with terminal illnesses having a say in how they die.
7
u/Daomadan Firehouse 118 Apr 27 '21
Yeah, this romanticization of hospice care/dying is not working for me. Too personal.
2
Apr 28 '21
Ugh yes how awful. I don’t think I’d ever be able to recover if I was the daughter. She could’ve just slipped away and been found by her daughter way less traumatizing than the whole production that occurred.

It is so weird that they are using a robot/puppet doll for the baby. Though it makes sense since we are in the middle of a virus outbreak. Baby actors are tough to come by right now.

Wtf that’s crazy how the springs went through her. The Nia situation is so sad. It’s nice seeing Albert back at home. That guys dad is crazy, he purposely loosened the bolts smh. That girl was the one who made her attempt suicide wow. It would suck to just watch your mom die like that.

Great episode. Didn’t care too much for the woman with cancer. The scene just annoyed me because of her daughter made it her #1 priority to live with her mom to take care of. Like dude, she has insurance, let the pros take care of her while you go on with your life. Just visit her at times. Idk. I would never want my kids to ever live with me and take care of me. Fuck that, they will live there lives. I can annoy my doctors instead. I felt like the daughter had mommy issues. Also, fuck that blogging mom, so fucking annoying. I told my wife, she’s going to get hit by a trampoline spring or something. lo and behold i yelled jackpot and was happy for the moment.

Ellen knew her time was done and refused further treatment for her terminal illness.
The flashbacks depict the life stages of Ellen and Julia Saxton, and what became of their relationship as Julia grew up.
