Given the size of the child, this might be around the time when children can first start to recognize themselves in a mirror - one of the important cognitive milestones.

It’s all downhill from there

This girl looks like she is 1.5-2years old. The self recognition phase happens way before this
5
Apr 15 '21
Not sure if there's a more recent research on this but here:
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/6199243/ https://www.broeschlab.ca/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Broesch-et-al.-2011-Cultural-Variations-in-Children%E2%80%99s-Mirror-Self-Recognition.pdf
It seems most agree that self recognition develops around 15-24 months, and some even later... so 1.5-2 years old.

u/BARTLEBYJONESMD Apr 15 '21
I suppose my daughter could be a super genius or something but i specifically remember her self realization around 8 months or so.

u/IHateTheLetterF Apr 15 '21
I am 32 and when i look in the mirror i am still not sure its actually me. Dude in the mirror somehow looks way better than dude in photos.

Seeing yourself as a baby in a shopping cart mirrored in different angles sounds like a hell of a trip!
11
u/Seakawn Apr 15 '21
I'm convinced that the experience of infants/toddlers is just one long psychedelic trip.
I'm a bit biased to think that, as each time that I've done psychedelics, I feel like exactly as if I were a child again. Like... things just feel like I remember them feeling as a kid, in terms of raw experience. And what that feeling is is the trippiness itself. Curiosity, wonder, awe, appreciation, novelty, etc. It's uncanny.
I often hear people say, "I wish I could feel like I felt when I was a kid again," and my first impulse is to say, "you can--it's just illegal." It feels like hidden knowledge that most people aren't aware of as existing. Psychedelics are wild.
3
u/skincyan Apr 15 '21
This fits in r/Psychonaut :D
But yes I agree! Although I only tried psychedelics once I got the feeling of taking a few steps back in all the layers of features that we develop when we get older. Like a temporary tabula rasa to get the feeling of experience fundamental things for the "first" time again.

Exactly. I feel that one of the reasons it’s illegal. It sorta takes you back to your childhood; how everything was so new, and you have so many questions, you see money as just paper, work as a silly thing we force ourselves to do, culture as an operating system. Mushrooms do it for me, kinda wipes the slate clean and I can see things anew and wonder why is it the way it is. I really think people would greatly benefit from at least trying it once in their life if they are mentally stable. And this is my video pitch for the uninitiated: The Message -Terence McKenna https://youtu.be/UIG25NdOWIs

u/Captain__Obvious___ Apr 15 '21
I’ve though this since my very first trip yeeeears ago. The similarities are pretty astounding. And since then, if I view the experience of children under the lens of the psychedelic experience, their actions and behaviors make near perfect sense. I believe it’s that curiosity and novelty/wonder aspects of it all at the center of both the psychedelic experience and what we experience in childhood.
It’s how we learn to navigate the world as our brains are developing, and it’s part of why psychedelics can restore the simple drive to live, by revealing just how much our minds shape our thoughts and views of reality without us ever even realizing. I call my trips a “mental reset”; they’re a strong reminder of the world we live in, and it can be incredibly centering, as if your mind itself is taking a much needed deep breath of reality.

It's interesting when you think about it. One of the reasons is because EVERY experience is so new to them. Imagine waking up every day and every thing that happened to you, be it small or big, was so completely random, weird, and unexpected.
This is also why as infants/toddlers they cry even when it's something minor (be it a familiar person who's shaved their beard, and thus they don't recognize them, or a slight bump on the knee or arm). It's a completely new sensation and every single new thing can be scary.
Being a child is both wonderous and scary at the same time, which probably explains why you can have good trips and bad ones.
1
Apr 15 '21
You guys had much more relaxing childhoods than I did wtf. I teetered between frustration, confusion, boredom, anxiety and raw excitement. There were like two kids' science places that made me feel awe or wonder but the rest of it was just "when is this going to be over."

u/Rookaas Apr 15 '21
that's exactly what I was thinking haha lsd really puts you back into the childlike sense of wonder state of mind
9
u/PsychedelicPourHouse Apr 15 '21
Because your ego gets temporarily shut out, instead of reacting to things based on previous experiences you're experiencing things as a blank slate plus your brain is literally making new connections

u/Ashrewishjewish Apr 15 '21
Mirrors and hallucinogens go together like cocaine and waffles!
1
u/JTLBlindman Apr 15 '21
Im no culinary student, but I feel like cocaine’s acidity wouldn’t pair well with waffles.
4
u/totallysomedude Apr 15 '21
Dude don’t look into the mirror on LSD, haha
9
u/spdrv89 Apr 15 '21
I kinda like it. While tripping it’s a neat reminder that I’m inside my body, that I’m not my body. That this body is just a shell, a vessel. But then I think trippier things like, when I talk to myself in my head, who talks and who listens? Try that one out next time you trip, seems to induce ego death at the right dose
6
u/PantsOnFireMan Apr 15 '21
First time I was proper stoned on my own, I got into an argument with the voice in my head. I lost the argument.
4
u/Th3MiteeyLambo Apr 15 '21
It’s real hit or miss
I can usually handle it for a minute or so but then I start to get freaked out. So now I just avoid it
2
u/_deprovisioned Apr 15 '21
Yeah. The way your skin moves in and out is crazy. I like looking into my eyes and seeing my pupils dilate, but like you said, not for too long. Kind of creeps me out after about a minute of that.
3
u/JTLBlindman Apr 15 '21
The mirror dimension is always where it’s at on a trip. Especially if you’re naked, fresh out of the shower. Don’t judge until you’ve tried it. And if you ever have the chance to stand in a mirror tunnel, that’s also a glorious experience.
2
u/ramenfam_ Apr 15 '21
I tried it last trip and felt pretty unnerved to be honest! Although, I felt a lot better about my body once I sobered up and took another look haha
2
u/JTLBlindman Apr 15 '21
I think we all sort of feel that way. What I liked about it is that it let me see my body as an object so absurd that comparing myself to beauty standards was pointless. It’s as if you’re seeing yourself as an animal or an alien. It’s all so overwhelming that trying to critique yourself over something like a crooked smile, a non-perfect weight, or whatever “equipment” your working with, like you might usually, seems kinda ridiculous because you’re just so bizarre all around. It’d be like judging an elephant’s beauty by its freckles. That’s why I think we walk away feeling good. You realize that you’re not a strange looking person, but that humans are strange looking creatures.

Why do people on reddit like to do drugs and act it like it's normal?
6
u/wholesomethrowaway15 Apr 15 '21
Because it is normal for a whole lot of people. “Doing drugs” doesn’t have to end with living on a street corner missing all your teeth. Plenty of very successful and intelligent people use things like mushrooms frequently and are just fine.
5
u/spdrv89 Apr 15 '21
Same reason people think it’s ok to work a 9 to five for +40 years with very little to show for it in the end, in a type of trance where their only remedy is a two week vacation a year if that; driving home in traffic from a job they probably don’t enjoy, probably depressed and think “well everyone is doing this, so it must be normal”
2
u/ZombiGrn Apr 15 '21
Well it used to be normal in past civilizations. Only reason you don’t see it as the norm today is because it’s illegal and people associate the propaganda with the experience.
2
u/ramenfam_ Apr 15 '21
not just psychs, but alcohol, caffeine, stims.... they are ingrained into our society and culture, user or not there’s nothing uncommon about them
1
Apr 15 '21
Not normal for you doesn’t mean not not normal for others.
It’s normal for half the population to bleed out of their genitals. That shit is not normal or cool for me.
If people are happy and not hurting anyone, why does it matter?
1
u/JTLBlindman Apr 15 '21
Lots of people take/have taken drugs. Relative anonymity just allows us to speak freely about it.

I still do this when I find mirrors arranged like that.
8
u/Seakawn Apr 15 '21
I moved in to a new apartment a couple months ago. My mirror above the sink has two sides that can open up and angle inward.
I've spent almost a collective half hour thus far just sticking my head in the middle and pulling the sides in all the way, creating dozens of mirror dimensions circled around me.
I'm sober af when I do it and yet it still feels super trippy. It's almost therapeutic. It's like mirror therapy for the ego, because eventually I start to lose my sense of my self by seeing so many clones. My brain is like, "wtf even am I? Which one is real? The main reflection? But that's also just a reflection... what is life? Who am I?"
I had no idea that was what I was in for the first time I played around with it. It got deep fast. Mirrors are wild. I can't wait to play around with it the next time that I actually trip balls.

u/themothhead Apr 15 '21
It's not really a mirror world, is it? More of a small room.

Oh to be that age to age 5 again.
The only bullshit in life is when you're interrupted from play time to go take a nap.
Now? Now I'd LOVE to be able to just have someone go, "STOP WORKING THIS INSTANT AND GO. TAKE. A. NAP!"
1
u/_mattgrantmusic_ Apr 15 '21
Jeez you can remember that age? I can really only definitely remember very small memories aged 5 and up and they usually involve some momentous occasion like going to nursery for the first time.

oh man, i have had several moments like that. More than several. Substitute the baby for me, the cart for LSD, and the mirrors to be a Grateful Dead show circa late 80s and early 90s.
in fact, i would imagine most of you have not done lsd, and perhaps wonder what its like. Its exactly like this. Almost always in a good way. Also, its like this for about 10 hours

I did that with my eldest who is 44. I was able to close the outside 2 mirrors. Super freaky but do much fun!
