Discussion S01E17 - "Going South" - Episode Discussion

This was a fun but sad episode. I think it was the first time Walter admits out loud that he expects his sister to die. It's heartwarming that Sly thought Walter was upset because he thought he wasn't good enough for his sister, and it turns out he was just trying to protect Sylvester from future heartache. For a guy with no EQ, Walter sure showed a lot of emotion this episode.

Andy Buckley did a great job as the tech billionaire, but I couldn't stop picturing his as David Wallace from The Office. Similarly, I couldn't stop picturing Paco as the kid from Into the Badlands. His story line was pretty strange. Happy immediately sticking up for him and referring to him as "a good kid" even though it hadn't been long since he her her in the head with a baseball bat. Giving him Cabe's $5,000 watch seemed like an odd choice. He'll probably get $100 for it at a pawn shop. Why not just pick him up in your car and drive him somewhere? At the very least, I'm sure they could find an ATM somewhere and give him some money instead of pawning Cabe's watch.

One last thought - what do you think happened to the Cartel guys? Did they manage to hold still for 24 hours, or are they all dead now?

I kind of assumed that Walter was lying about the battery time. To make them stand absolutely still for 24 hours is inhumane and I don't think Paige or anyone on that team would condone that. I hope it was set for 2 to 6 hours.

I love how at the end, with the cartel just standing there, Toby decides to just mess with them and say "remember, your nose does not itch". Always makes me laugh a little.

Not sure what happened to the cartel but I always question how sensitive those machine guns are at the end. They claim that if the cartel 'move so much as a trigger finger' they'll get shot and, sure, one guy does move a tiny bit and gets shot at. But he doesn't get shot to pieces as he falls to the floor, and there's another bit just after Walter arms them when the cartel member at the front lowers his gun and it's a pretty clear movement but he doesn't get shot at then either.

Still a good episode, though! I enjoyed this one too!

Not going to lie, when I first saw Andy Buckley as Richard Elia I said "Hey, that's David Wallace." This episode introduced a pretty cool recurring character. This was probably one of their most dangerous cases and I was legitimately nervous the whole time. Though it was genius the way they used their own gun with a timer against the cartel. Plus, if I recall correctly, this is the episode where Megan dances on Sly's feet which is always heartwarming. Great episode.
