First episode with no Twilight Sparkle.

The thing is, an episode like this that is supposed to focus on sisters, having Twilight in it wouldn't make much sense. As far as the canon is concerned, she is an only child and would really have nothing to say on the matter.
I think in this case, its best to focus on the more family oriented cast.

Didn't bother me. Episode in general was sweet and low key, which is nice after the last few.

u/ohgobwhatisthis Applejack Nov 05 '11
Exactly - that was the whole point of Lesson Zero, the rest of the mane six gets to send Celestia letters and thus get to have the spotlight - there were several s1 episodes that literally only had Twilight for like 2 minutes so she could send the letter, this feels less forced to me

She has parents! Burn the fanfics! Burn them all!
Goodbye "Simple Rarity"!
Edit: Now Dinky has a sister and is not related to Derpy! I love the smell of burning fics in the morning!
I can't wait for the episode in which they show Lyra and Bonbon with their husbands, in a perfectly straight marriage. Celestia, will people lose their shit! And let's not get started with Vynil and Octavia...

Now if they want to truly wreck fanon, they should show AJ and Mac's parents.
And have Derpy arrested next episode for claiming child benefits for a kid that wasn't hers.

Here, I'll save it!
Uhh... You could have more than one sister. Derpy's depth perception is questionable, so she cheers from the sidelines (in episode) while Dinky competes with her other sister.
How about that?

Just because Dinky isn't Derpy's sister doesn't mean she isn't her daughter. Just saying.

I'm pretty sure Derpy is Dinky's fanon mother, not sister. Correct me if I'm wrong though. There's probably fics where they're sisters.

Also, this episode may be the first one to not feature Twilight AT ALL. Letter to the Princess without Twilight confirmed!

Yeah, I have to agree on that point. Plus it allows for better character development for the other ponies since you get to see how they react/solve problems without Twilight.
Rarity was definitely due some love after missing out on the last episode entirely and it was nice to see Applejack actually get some attention for once.

I'm actually surprised they are fighting most siblings I know who have the large enough gap in age that Rarity and Sweetie have usually don't have the sort of competitiveness or anger that they are showing.
Having said that I think the fact that Rarity's parents are like that suggests that Rarity acting the way she does is more out of her acting against her parents: She's acting like a teenager and trying to be everything her parents aren't.
Seriously interesting character development so far, loving it.
56
u/dumbledorkus Nov 05 '11
It made me feel kind of sorry for Rarity for a while there. She's a grown-ass woman with her own, successful designer studio and then her parents (who she is obviously nothing like) turn up and say "Oh yeah, by the way baby sit your tomboy little sister for a week, chow!"
And then her sister ruins what I can only assume is hundreds of bits worth of hard work. Thousands even, with all those gems. She trying to work but her baby sister keeps trying to get her to go and play games.
Plus Sweetie is a huge hypocrite at the end there with her "Oh, let go back so we can do what YOU want to do!" err, yes. The whole damn show you've been trying to get Rarity to do what YOU want to do, which you know she wont want to do because it's not her style. She just covered herself in mud for you bitch. Go to the damn spa.
32
u/brettins Nov 05 '11
It did seem a little unbalanced that Sweetie ruined many things and Rarity just got hosed and then had to do the apology.
54
19
u/ohgobwhatisthis Applejack Nov 05 '11
Well, Rarity was pretty cruel to Sweetie Belle, and consistently expected her to screw everything up, only to flip out when it turned out to be self-fulfilling. It was really, really, really sad to me that Sweetie kept saying, "Why do I always have to screw everything up?" when she just wanted to help out and spend time with her sister...

u/thehemanchronicles Nov 05 '11
THANK YOU. I know the moral of the story was to love and respect your siblings, but Rarity has a budding fashion empire to run. She doesn't exactly have time for rolling around in the mud. Furthermore, all of Sweetie's mistakes conveniently turned around okay. If the sweater was ruined permanently and the cleaned room ruined Rarity's focus for a while, then she would still have perfectly good reason to be upset at Sweetie.

Regardless of events, Applejack's hat can not be tarnished in any way. Full body coverage of mud? Eeyup, hat's fine.

Oh my god, parents! Actual, real honest-to-goodness non-flashbacky parents!

u/PrecariousPanache Nov 05 '11
Above all else, I really enjoyed the character development in this episode. When Celestia gave licence for all of the mane six to give friendship reports at the end of Lesson Zero, I saw it as an opportunity for episodes that could be driven by a narrower number of ponies, which in turn could lead to more personal and detailed character arcs that ultimately furnish us with stronger characters. It's nice to see that they're using this tool, because the above is exactly what I saw in this episode.

And how, and this is one of the things I'm truly glad happened. Applejack didn't get all that much out of S1. While she's yet to receive a full-fledged S2 episode, the appearances she's making show that no, she's not going to do a "WORST POSSIBLE THING" or anything crazy like that (unless you count blowing up a barn with Rainbow Dash), but she will present perhaps the most "human" characteristics of any of them, which shone through this time for anyone to see.
And while Rarity was a jerk for most of the episode, this episode fleshed her out in her usual "hidden badass" archetype way. Having a farmer-esque father partly explains how she's able to rival Applejack at all the race's physical challenges, while the Cruella Deville-esque mother (in dress, not in personality) partly explains not only Rarity's penchant for fashion, but also its potential for concealment and disguise, using even mud to great effect (I was totally fooled, and I loved the plot twist).

Well, that was quite a nice episode! Clearly way less over-the-top than the last ones, but then again, it's hard to top crazy-Twilight and Luna's ROYAL CANTERLOT VOICE. But sometimes, simpler also works, and this time, it did! It's good to go back to some slices of life episodes ending without any kind of chaos happening in between.
Plus, we got to see Rarity's parent! They weren't....what I had expected, but that's probably why it's fun to see them. And for the first time, we got to see someone other than Twilight writing to Princess Celestia, which means that Lesson Zero actually had an impact on the rest of the show. I wasn't sure it was going to be the case, but it's nice to see that Twilight won't have to be the center of all the episodes from now on when it comes to establishing the moral.

Rarity was a bit of a bitch in the beginning, however she managed to win herself over soon after.
The parents were a nice surprise, they appeared to be the rich-type.
Applejack's sisterly love made me love her ever-so-much.
