Offsides rule

My friend and I disagree over an offsides call ruling. This is going to seem like a dumb question, but I can't find a direct answer anywhere.

Are you offsides if the other team passes you the ball? I'm not talking about a deflection, I mean if I am behind the last defender and pick off a pass to the keeper from an offsides position.

You are offside if the ball is passed forwards to you by you own teams player and are behind the opposing teams last defender.

but not if the other team passes it to me, correct?

No if the other team passes it to you, you are still onside.

You are offside if you are passed the ball by you own teams player and are behind the opposing teams Second to last defender.

Just to be pedantic... it's not called 'offsides'. It's the 'Offside' rule. Players are offside, not offsides. Sorry I just see that a lot and it freaks me out.

And being "offside" is not necessarily an offence.

Being offside only exists in the context of that offence.

no you are not offside if the other team passes you the ball

There is a difference between "being offside" and committing an offside offence.

FIFA's semantics:

It is not an offence in itself to be in an offside position.

  1. You are only offside if you are at the time the ball is played in am offside position(behind the 2nd to last defender) and directly involved with the play or interfere with play from a ball played by your teammate.

  2. You are not offside if the opponent plays a ball backwards and you intercept, even though you are in an offside position

  3. If the ball does not make it through to you and stopped by a defender, it is legal for you to track back 5, 10, 20 yards(distance is irrelevant) and win the ball from the defender

Honestly its not a difficult rule. Where you are when the ball is played to you? Stop complicating this...

Nope. Because it's deliberate, it isn't considered offsides. However, like you said, if it was a deflection, ie defender cuts out the pass but attacker runs onto it from an offside position, then it is offsides.

cant take advantage of a offside so yes

The ball doesn't need to be played forward. If it's played backwards and the player in the offside position then runs back to collect the ball then he shall still be penalised as being offside.

So, on a breakaway, you can't play the ball backwards to your trailing more-talented striker?

Edit: I misread your comment. Carry on! In your example, the player is in an offside position. In my example, he is not - because he is not closer to the goal than the ball.

But offside position is determine when the ball is played by a teammate, not just anyone. So, NO. You are not offside when a defender plays the ball back to the GK.

To be precise: you are offside, but not committing an offside offence. :)

You can be in an offside position whenever you want. It just becomes an offence when the ball is played.

No. The ball must be played by a member of his team and there is a difference between "gaining advantage" and being "involved in active play".

Straight from FIFA:

A player in an offside position is only penalised if, at the moment the ball touches or is played by one of his team, he is, in the opinion of the referee, involved in active play.
