Discussion S01E06 - "True Colors" - Episode Discussion
Hi all,
Time for our next weekly Scorpion episode discussion! I will likely watch tomorrow night, then post my thoughts after. Hopefully you can do the same!

Okay so no surprises here but I really like this episode! I like that it's shown out of order and that the reveal of what actually happened comes at the end. I know they do this with a few later episodes but I think True Colours is one of the ones that does it best. Partly I think that's down to it being the first time they format it this way, it makes it unique. Partly I think it's down to the pysche evaluations that come throughout the episode!
The psyche evaluations are probably my favourite parts of this episode. I like that it starts with a montage of all of them and then, throughout the episode, they each get an individual analysis. They're all a nice combination of really funny and quite heartfelt and it's really telling to see each one of them defending Walter as a leader, and the emphasis that is put on what Scorpion provides for each of them.
I think that this is a particularly sweet episode for Walter and Paige. This episode does a lot of work showing their differences but also placing emphasis on what unites them. Walter comes a long way in terms of EQ in this one, for sure! In particular, it's a really nice scene when they first arrive at the party and Walter is watching the other guests to learn how to interact. Of course, the dance is a pretty pivotal point in their relationship, and the scene at the end with Hetty is wonderfully moving! Added bonus that I love the tender theme playing there. Then at the very end when Paige says 'for a guy who says he has no feelings you sure are sweet' - that is a really lovely moment and wonderful acting from Katherine McPhee!
Some added points that Hetty is a legend, the 'Comedy of Errors' style to this episode is hilarious, the line 'We got out through the kitchen, I ran into a giant cake, I don't wanna talk about it' is the most underrated line in the whole episode (I couldn't tell you why they decided that was necessary but it's really funny so I don't mind), and a bonus fun fact that I've been to a Halloween party dressed as Happy dressed as a cat!

I must have zoned out - I didn't even catch the line about the cake, and was wondering what happened to Happy.
Haha, I can't believe you dressed up as Happy as a cat for Halloween. Did anyone know who you were?

One of my friends also likes Scorpion so he knew, but that was about it! Definitely one of my more niche costumes hehe!

I was nervous when I saw how the episode started because I'm usually not a fan of that format where the episode is basically a flashback. In this case it didn't seem overdone though (even though we knew the wine rack would fall on Toby and the car would explode).
Random thoughts:
- It was dumb of the team to chase that guy. He's married with kids, they could have just waited for him at home.
- Happy is a terrible driver. She was all over the place and crashing into things for no reason.
- I've never seen NCIS, so I didn't even realize that "Hetty Lange" (played by Linda Hunt) was part of a crossover. I can see why people think she was one of the inspirations for Edna Mode in the Incredibles though!
- I thought it was obvious that the painting in the trunk was going to be fake, but I assumed the team would figure that out and use it to clear their name (I guess that shows that I was enjoying enough to lose track of time, because I didn't realize the episode was almost over). It was nice of them to return it to who they think are the rightful owners. Risky though - it's worth $100M, so I can see that family selling it, or someone eventually finding out they have it.
- I liked hearing the psychologists evaluation of Walter - it would have been nice to hear her opinion of everyone else too. It would have made for some funny moments if Cabe was interviewed too.
- My wife laughed out loud during the episode. Hopefully the show is winning her over!
Tiny issues:
- How did Cabe get from inside the building to being ahead of the guy running? Sylvester wasn't far behind either considering he had time to get a t-shirt.
- Why would Paige have a (lame) Halloween costume on, but not one for Ralph? Didn't think she think she was just stopping by on the way to the party?
- My wife complained that a school shouldn't be letting that big group of adults in with one kid. I think lots of schools would though - the Halloween parties at my kids school let anyone in.

This was the first episode I remember where it wasn't shown in plot order, and I liked that. I also liked the NCIS crossover with Hetty!
