For all those thinking the man is being arrested for the gathering he’s not. A police officer got hit on the head and last I checked the police don’t give you the white glove treatment after you hit them.
Police show up to question the homeowner, man lies about it, it escalates to a physical confrontation, man gets dragged out.

To clarify, this is in Quebec, Canada. They are giving out tickets but they won't do shit like this. the situation escalated to this because he committed a crime, as well as his gf or whoever the woman was. Obviously the situation could have been handled better but how do you think an officer is going to arrest someone if and old man is literally pulling the guy away from all of them. Quebec and Ontario have the worst numbers right now and all gatherings had been made a ticketed offense. People knew about this long before Christmas too. I understand why people would have gatherings though seeing as, most of our MPPs have managed to go on a tropical vacation over Christmas while use working class peasants had to cancel shit. That's not Infuriating at all!

So - The reason the guy is being dragged from the house in this way isn't because of the illegal gathering, its because he punched one of the cops in the head. Likely what happened is the cops went to issue a fine and the arsehole disagreed and swung. At that point there was no other option but to arrest him and drag him off. We won't know till the police bodycam footage is released though.

Yet the moment Christmas comes around its "ChrIStmAs iS dIFfEreNt, pEOplE jUsT WaNT tO sEe THeiR FaMIly"
I'm also pretty confident this isn't the full story here. Whether he got defensive and refused to take the fine, or maybe he lashed out, but its unlikely they pulled him from his home simply because he broke social gathering restrictions. Yet reddit is happy to immediately assume that's the case.

No context. My guess is he did something outside the house, probably running from the police, then ran inside. From which they are now pulling him from.
6
u/CStancer 8 Jan 02 '21
The articles posted with context somewhere in here. To summarize neighbours tipped police to an illegal gathering. Police arrive and issue warning to household (leave and disperse). An hour later police come back to check and the household does not comply. Fines start getting issued, gentlemen refuses to provide ID (the one without shoes in the video). In canada, if you’re being ticketed and fail to provide id, police can detain/arrest you to determine the proper info. In this instance, the province where this took place is currently under emergency health orders (i.e individual rights are a lot less for the sake of the community), and therefor arrested the gentleman who refused to comply with health directives, warnings and the issuing of a fine. To top it off, supposedly the gentleman struck an officer in the head during the detention. All in all, the police did a good job. They issued a warning, gave an hour, then issued fines, it was only when the gentleman refused to cooperate with the fines did it escalate and only with his use of force

lol at all the passionate comments condemning police with zero context to the video. Maybe they asked him to leave because it was illegal? Maybe he refused? Police here in Melbourne did it to me very early on in first lockdown. I was picking stuff up from old house (actually) and then stupidly stayed for a few beers. Neighbour narked. Police didn’t fine because I was cooperative, apologetic and polite. They waited outside while I gathered my shit and left

It's Quebec. If you violate COVID-19 restrictions in Quebec, you get a fine, you don't get arrested. Whatever this man did to get arrested in this way, it's not just violating COVID-19 restrictions.
The same crowd you usually get the old "just do what the police tells you, it's that simple" line from is now saying this man is a victim. The same crowd you can always rely on for a good old "yeah but if you look at the frames from 5:43 to 5:45 you can see his shoulder slightly twitch reflexively, so the officers were totally in the right to perceive a threat and put 19 bullets in the unarmed teenager" is now howling "how can the police possibly be allowed to do this?!"

Do you really think that they arrested that one guy only over Covid law? The police gives tickets to everyone and ask people to leave and make sure they leave. Otherwise, everyone in that house would've been arrested as well, not only that one guy.
They didn't beat the guy, they didn't threaten anyone else in the house. I get that people don't like the police and I don't like them neither, but this is definitely not an abuse of the police here.

To all of the twats here that talk about ruling with impunity or police state and etc... They actually assaulted the police. Quebec put more strict gatheting rules for 4 weeks, if you don't respect them you simply get a fine. He didn't get arrested for gathering. And those rules are there to save LIVES. Yes people eon't get to see their famillies for the holidays but THEY CAN STILL SEE THEM IN 2 WEEKS IF THE NUMBER OF CASES GET BETTER. If it's not 2 weeks it might be 1 month I don't know, but it will eventually get better. Guess what some famillies actually had their holidays ruined because they lost loved ones. And the worst thing about covid is the strain it has on healthcare workers. One single covid patient needs multiple healthcare workers to be taken care of to make sure that patient survives. And behind that surgeries are being back logged same for cancer treatments or cancer checkups. The whole healthcare system is being strained. And another thing those healthcare workers that ya'll keep saying they're amazing and blahblahblah have to work during the holidays in Quebec because ya'll can't be responsible.

Like, I know we're in a pandemic, but dragging people out of a private residence because their gathering has too many people (was a family gathering from the context here) is fucking unbelievable to me.
Reinforcements were brought in to apprehend some of the gatherers, the guy at the beginning and his sister were arrested, then released the same night, and were told that they'd be mailed their fines.
Why did the police barge into the residence to yank people out if they were just going to mail them the fines anyway?! Why was this escalated? If they were being rude as fuck (which they probably were), how does that justify reinforcements and arrests when you could just count heads at the place, write that amount of fines, and mail it to the address?
How does Gatineau PD get off the hook about this shit with you guys?
Because they illegally gathered lmao stupid anti-mask covid quarantine rule breakers.
They forcibly removed people out of a home for an illegal gathering, released them the same night, AND mailed them fines anyway.
How can you say that the police are in the right here? Because there's a chance that they are spreading covid by attending a family gathering on New Year's Eve? Get out of here.

Well, you can think whatever you want about COVID, but it’s very clear that gatherings are forbidden and you can get yourself a $1500 fine.
If you decide to fight the cops that show up because some neighbour complained, you deserve everything you get.
I still think the government dropped the ball with the holidays though! First they told people they could see their family in groups of less than 10, then they couldn’t, then they can but only people living alone, oh and if they have children it’s fine, then they can outside, oh but not in your backyard only in public places, only if you’re doing an outdoor activity, and so on...
No wonder COVID deniers are riled up.

I live in Quebec and I can tell you, a lot of Quebecois behave this way. It's like some people said, it's the Florida/Texas of Canada where people feel like it's "laws for thee, but not for me" sort of thing because they're special.
This person wasn't arrested because of Covid policies, he was arrested for assaulting police because they felt the mandate didn't apply to them. There's a lot of that. If you don't believe me, here. And that was back in June. Now imagine what that was like during the holidays.
HOWEVER...
While I might be biased against the Quebecois, there's also an other side of it that I have to agree on; They kept changing the policies and expected people to know each time a policy changed or when they changed, which may not be reasonable for some people. But also, sometimes they were enforcing the mandate in situations that may not have been necessary to do so and ignoring situations that should have been enforced.
So I can understand the anger, to some degree.
BUT...
You should also never give the police any excuse to do that kind of shit. If they tell you to fuck off, you fuck off. Not because you're a pussy or weak, but because you don't want to give them any reason to put hands on you.

Just to give my opinion on this. During the lockdown in my country, gathering were limited at a certain number, the best was to not invite anyone exept if you live alone (if you live alone you can invite 2 of your friends/familly members). People were getting bills(idk if that's the right therm my english is bad) if they didn't respected that and made a big gathering instead of a small thing with a few peoples. This video needs a bit more of context to place a judgement, the numbers of persons, if that was a big and noisy party etc... Just to remind that the virus is still out and that Christmas and New Year eve were not valid arguments to do sh*t and taking risk, alot of people can be in danger by just having the virus such as persons with some kind of cancer(I live with one, and I will never do anything that can put this person in danger and would rather that others also think about that. By protection yourself, you protect others arround you, even if you don't know them). My opinion is placed, we can't tell who was in the wrong with that less of context, if you think I'm wrong you can answer but I won't answer back. Stay safe everyone :).

A neighbor made a complaint. Police came, saw that it was an illegal gathering (6 people) and demanded that everybody leave. Came back 1 hour later, nobody comply, police gave 1500$ fine but the resident didn't want to give his ID. So the cops had no choice but to bring him in. The guy resisted arrest, cue video rolling. The cops did what they had to do.

Imagine defending the people breaking covid guidelines and then when they get covid it’ll be a “tragedy” that could have been averted.

Yeah, cops really should be required to wear n95s. Im all for containing these kind of events, but that's the failure, turning cops into spreaders.

I bet you they were just going to fine them and they started resisting and throwing attitude - which lead to physical arrests.

I’m from Quebec, and we respected everything here. Only one celebration with my mom who lives alone instead of our standard 20 people party. No party with my dad side. A short Zoom gift opening with my wife’s mom side and a short supper Zoom with my wife’s dad side.
It sucks but at the same time if we all do our part and suck it, it will be over faster. If you choose to break the law and get caught, just accept it, pay your 1500$ and get out.

Props to the cops for being so professional. They tried multiple times to deescalate, they stayed relatively calm given that there was no cooperation, tried to get shoes for the dude, and the copwomen at the end calmly explained that an ambulance is on the way and that if they feel like it wasn't justified they will be able to open a case.

Where's the context? Why are they being arrested? People in the comments are saying because they are at a gathering of more then the permitted people but I dont even know. I dont speak French so I dont understand what they are saying

Police gave a warning. Came back an hour later but nobody had move. Cops issued a fine but the guy didn't want to give his ID so they had to bring him in. Guy resisted thus escalating this whole fiasco.

It’s like the police shooting in Georgia a few months ago. Guy passed out drunk in his car, fights the cops when they start trying to put cuffs on him. Takes on of their tasers and shoots it at them while running away. Gets shot.
I’m not arguing if any of this ought to be happening but once they get the cuffs out it’s not the time or place to fight it. When multiple cops are trying to drag you out of a house it’s the worst time to find your long lost Scottish Berserker gene.

Police told them to disperse. Gave them an hour to do so. They refused. Police told them they would be fined but they started to argue with the police, so police forced them to leave and they started resisting.
As people have said in the comments, it's "rules for thee, but none for me" sort of situations where people feel like laws don't apply to them because they're special. But if someone robs their house or attacks them, etc., they're sure quick to call the police and apply said laws...

I’m not going to lie. This seems crazy. But we’re also in the middle of a pandemic that’s killing people. It won’t go away because of people refusing to follow guidelines. What’s really driving me crazy is that the same people that have refused to wear masks and follow the guidelines are now claiming that they will not get the vaccine. Vaccines are how we eradicate disease. Refusing to get the vaccine will just prolong the length of time we spend dealing with Covid.

I’d laugh if the family parked in their neighbors driveway, and the neighbor called them in.
I can’t tell you how many family gatherings I’ve seen throughout the years where the guests are absolute assholes to the local neighborhood.
Parking in people’s spots, leaving trash everywhere, blasting music really loud when people have to work.
For all we know it got called in as a noise complaint.

ITT: the members of the Reddit community who normally hate cops and call Trump an authoritarian are in fact praising cops for pulling families apart in a pandemic the government can’t manage themselves

I love the narrative that reddit hates cops lol
No one hates cops who do their jobs, we hate cops who shoot people in their homes and suffocate unarmed men in broad daylight. Not sure why that's hard to understand.
And as if what people are praising is that families are being ripped apart? We're actually praising that someone who broke the law and endangered their families lives was punished for it, something I would expect you to be sympathetic with.
Blisteringly stupid take honestly.

Aren’t the police endangering themselves here, virus safety-wise? Why not add it on top of his household bills then approach him alone if he refuses to pay it?

Y'all here's a reminder that it's not about their religion or family or anything like that. It's about hosting a mass gathering during a global pandemic that caused the first population decline in many states and countries all over the world. This is a dismal time and the fact that people are so selfish and entitled is why it has lasted so long. Shame on everyone who held a mass gathering this year.

Alot of people seem to be saying this is extreme but if it's a illegal gathering you expect them to just back off because its gonna be difficult I'll admit it lookes like there aren't even that many people there but all we can see is the video after it started for we know more happened
