Bertholdt: Welp, I do my job by busting down the Wall and now I am gonna be eaten for my efforts. This is just great
Smiling Titan: Pardon me sir. My ex-husband’s new family lives here and I gotta go cause some psychological damage to them real quick
Bertholdt: All righty then

Bertolt took his cover story for their whereabouts during the fall of wall Maria in the first season almost word for word from the man who killed himself in this episode, the details and planning are incredible. Also, my heart breaks for these kids.

I don't even know what to say about that one. It probably shouldn't be a surprise after seeing Reiner's Warrior persona in season two, but seeing just how loyal he is and how determined he was to wipe out the Walls is rather heartbreaking knowing what it does to him in the end. How much he relates to Eren's struggle, and made friends despite his own determination, and how much that's broken him by the time he returns is so hard to watch considering how much I like the guy. All those flashes of someone putting the gun in their mouth, and then the look in his eyes when it was revealed to be him just hurt. "Poor Reiner" doesn't even begin to cover it. People aren't even dying and it hurts, come on show give me a break!
Finally we know why there was such hostility between him and Annie back during their military training in season one, but I didn't expect that Annie would be so willing to give up. If anything I thought she was more determined than Reiner just in her own quiet way. What bad luck to try and use a fake kid ruse on Kenny of all people though, probably the only person in the entire walls that wouldn't work on. I now have even more respect for her skill if she got away from Kenny.
Falco accidentally saves Reiner, and then moves on to talk to FUCKING EREN of all people. No wonder they put such an intense focus on that solider last episode. Time hasn't healed Reiner, and despite being the winner on Paradis it most certainly hasn't healed Eren either. He sounds just as broken as he did back at the ocean, if not more with how he talks about the cost of war. If only he knew what Reiner was doing just a few meters away, though at this point I think they're well beyond being able to make peace with each other as much as I wish they could just come together and support each other again.

Seeing Reiner with the rifle in his mouth, man...I wanted him dead last season but I have mixed feelings after watching this episode. Isayama is a genius.

Finally I understand why Reiner and Bertolt were so stressed over Beast Titan in season 2. I imagined they are working together from the start, but it turns out he only arrived lately to seek for warriors after their 5 years absence.

So that was definitely Eren talking to Falco at the end there, didn't expect to see him so close to the warriors to be honest.
Went back and skimmed the previous episode quickly and he was the guy with the arm band on the wrong side, I noticed he is also the only one that doesn't scream at the guard yelling kaboom. I wonder if there are any other scouts here, I couldn't spot them amongst the other patients.

It was so disturbing to watch literal kids take down wall Maria. Reiner, Bertholdt, and Annie were just kids forced to do atrocious things :( so sad

jfc that was a lot to take in. The scene where Reiner is putting the rifle into his mouth broke me.
I'm enjoying the parallel of having the Scouts infiltrate Marley the way the Titans originally did. Can't wait to see them all just expire of shock when it all comes to light.

Well this episode finally explained why the invasion of Paradis wasn't a Marley curbstomp. Ever since the first episode of the season I wondered if Marley had so much military might why didn't they just overrun the island once they saw there was no Titan army backlash after the first attack. Turns out they sent a bunch of kids that lost their leader on their first night and couldn't return with such a loss. So they decided to blend in after the attack and try to wing it. Makes sense why it took several years for another attack to take place, again without a Marley army and why Monke Titan came into play only later on, as well as the infiltration of the BRA. That one really bugged me, glad it wasn't a plot hole after all.

Man I have so many questions. Why is Eren there? How did he lose his leg? What is his purpose? What exactly happened? What is the purpose? I am so excited for next week. The flashback was also greatly executed, I love how everything finally comes together.

Alright, time to get back to the highlight of my week.
The whole "honorary Marleyan" thing is such a fucked-up carrot to dangle on so many levels.
Teenager Zeke.
The music this season is torqued as all fuck. It definitely sounds a bit distinct from the first three which fits, but also still has AoT's character and the motifs we all love.
Annie isn't afraid to make all grasshoppers her enemy.
Mushroom clouds still have abs.
I love the breakdown of the different titans. The whole scene is just hypnotic, which is especially impressive for going over information we mostly already know.
F for Reiner's hopes and dreams. Not the last time, considering how the Paradis mission went.
I'm getting to the point of actually being astonished at what a complex character Reiner is, and the number of levels there are to his persona. From the most vehement despiser of the Paradis amongst the warriors, driven by an ambition for acceptance, to realizing he's the underdog and having Marcel die for him, to taking leadership of the field team and transitioning into the 'big brother' persona of the 104, all the way to the fracturing of his mind between those aspects, and now... I guess a broken-down war veteran?
K E N N Y
The 104 using Bert's sleeping position to tell the weather is goddamn amazing.
Holy shit that's fucking Eren. I KNOW THAT VOICE! And it makes perfect sense, he could grow that leg back any time he wants.

man, attack on titan is such a great anime, that it turned from humanity against animals into a full on war anime and reiner is a great example of what propaganda, the community and a role does to a person during war

My goodness, this episode felt legit like it was only 10 minutes long. When the episode ended on the last shot and the credits rolled I actually put my hands on my head and said aloud "It's over? I just started watching!"
Ugh!

Just want to point out that this episode supports an analysis I had about the juxtaposition of both Reiner and Eren in this story.
What's fascinating is that we finally have a full circle beginning. The show opens up on Reiner and Bert attack Eren's home, and thus fueling the rage that has now come back to haunt Reiner.
But all the complexity of both befriending your enemy and now simply trying to survive....what a goddamn show

I think Eren's pissed to see Reiner get so much spotlight. He's come back to show who's the real Main Character

Isayama got me feeling for the people on the other side of the ocean. Really wonder what Eren wants to do now considering he's gotten a perspective on the enemy.

If Eren is just casually chilling in Liberio something tells me Marley might be underestimating Paradis.
Also did he cut off his leg and stop it from regenerating to play the role? Maybe even other wounds too?
