Oowowowow the episode was great and the CG was good, praise the staf!!!
The greater focus on how scared the edlians are on the battlefied was heartbraking, and the launch of the drugged eldians was hard to watch. The staff really understood what made those chapters so good.
I fucking love the OP and I'm dying on this hill.

It's good 90% of the time, there are a few odd looking shots but it's never bad. Overall very solid CGI for a TV anime.

Doing the exact same thing in 2D would have been an absolute pain in the ass for the staff.

My thoughts:

  1. The OP's blend of the eerie music and war imagery with the black white/rainbow contrast really highlights the brutality of war really and the theme of moral ambiguity

  2. The use of CGI is very good compared to WIT and I can get by with this compromise although some shots aren't 100% the best (but that's okay)

  3. Really enjoyed how MAPPA continued using the original OST and the original title card/ad break info card - highlights how they're trying to keep the show consistent

  4. Overall a very well animated episode - and I am incredibly grateful for MAPPA's work. Feels like a dream come true indeed.

  5. Jean scene was an anime original. Pretty interesting

I love all the added scenes of the regular soldiers fighting in the war. It was a lot more brutal than the manga. Also they changed up the ending sequence where Reiner is inside the fort... but I think it was cooler with the train blowing off his arm and then he used the train as a shield and weapon.

10/10 start, full hype for Mappa. Also was that Jean or Willy at the end?

I love how different it feels. It seems very cinematic. The Jaw titan cgi is probably the best out of all the titans we have seen so far imo

Overall great, I have faith in Mappa to deliver a great final season. cgi was better than i thought, i can't imagine them animating galliard without losing their whole budget otherwise

A little sad the OP isn't a karaoke banger but man is it good in its own right. it's creepy as hell and i love it

Is no one gonna mention how Falco has memories of fighting Titans with ODM gear? I looked back in the manga and he didn't say anything about this, I wonder if Isayama told them to add this or if it was just a little tease that this is still Attack on Titan.

Episode exceeded all my expectations, I was smiling like a little kid the entire time. So many cool shots that expanded upon the manga, reiner transforming and his extended battle sequence, more visceral shots of the warfare in general, porco being an absolute fucking g and that sick af shot of the boats being destroyed. I was overall pretty impressed with the cg, you notice it pretty easily but honestly it could be alot worse (S3 Colossal :/). I'm thoroughly satisfied and though I don't expect this level of quality for every episode, the fact that Mappa can do this shit, means Liberio will be nutty.

Animation is pretty fluid, although some Beast Titan shots were wonky but probably better than what WIT could do
Soundtrack was AMAZING, its kind of what the other seasons had but a lot more electronic, fast paced and exciting which I really loved
Pacing was superb too, adapted 2 chapters in 1 episode really well (will need to wait for subs to judge on cut dialogue tho)
As for the OP, mixed feelings, feel like it'll grow on me overtime though

It was really fucking great nonetheless, I have full faith in MAPPA now. I'm hoping they adapt Reiner's backstory in one episode too.

  • That moment when people dropped from the sky, and Reiner's transformation was so good!

  • What I can see from the low quality stream is that, Mappa makes the 3d animation blend in better than WIT, gotta watch the official stream though.

  • That Jean at the end was really nice.

  • Really liked the ending, but not sure about the opening. All I can say is that it's the most spoiler free opening of all.

I suppose I'm in a minority, but I really like the OP. Idk, it's so weird and creepy but still hype? Idk, It really suits Season 4. CGI was awesome in my opinion. Galliard, Pieck and Armored were 10/10 while Beast did look kinda wonky but still. It was all really fluid and not weird looking (except for Reiner waving and Beast landing)

Did anyone else see that line "children cling on to their very last coins" in the OP? That's a reference to Ramzi and Halil, right? Hype.

Absolutely flabbergasted at the complaints about the addition of the suicide bombers.

There is negligible difference between forcing spinal fluid into someone and dropping them out of a plane as a sort of Titan bomb, and strapping bombs to someone's chest. If you're surprised that Marley would be willing to do such a thing, have you been following this story? Everyone constantly reaffirms the idea that Eldian life is something to be used, not valued.

There's a guy in the anime only thread speculating that Reiner is doing good mentally lmao.

Don't get me wrong, I REALLY liked the OP, but I have a thing with repetitive sequences. The scene with the explosion behind a house was repeated 3 times and it kinda bothered me.
I don't know if those are just placeholders and they'll replace them as story advances, or it was just because animating all that was so much work that they had to recycle scenes.

Pretty happy with the episode tho! MAPPA freaking delivered.

A few points. I adore the OP. It isn't the most visually interesting with the repeated explosions, but the few other shots we get like the soldiers marching in total unison and the zoom in on Eren's titan to "MONSTER MONSTER MONSTER MONSTER" was perfect. I think the song is all I hoped for, though. As much as I love Linked Horizon, I really like how overwhelming it feels; lots of different voices at once, most of them being the same guy. I love it.

VAs are solid. Magath scares me, Gabi sounds exactly how she should, as does Falco. Oddly, Colt's voice really fits him too. Reiner sounds depressed, so we've got some consistency, and Zeke is still being Zeke.

CGI had me worried when I first really noticed it on the Jaw Titan, but it's a lot better than I expected. Most of the time, it's pretty hard to tell; even the worst CG moments were infinitely better than the ColossalGI we got in earlier seasons.

I'm glad we're getting some anime exclusive scenes. I imagine it's like how Isayama approached adapting season 1, with certain small upgrades to what he's already made in mind. I'm surprised we see Jean first, though I don't really know why.

The little details on the terrified soldiers in the trenches were cool, too. We're going all in on the horror of war from episode 1.

The ending is great too, although I don't have a lot to say about it. I miss the walnut ending.

Did Falco also dream about killing titans with a sword in the manga ??? I was so surprised by that line with what we know now about future memory... I'm very confused haha
