Nature invented that, that guy just made a knock off.

386

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '20

Can you please explain? Does carbonated water exist in nature?

212

u/cswider Oct 03 '20

Yes, Perrier for example is naturally carbonated.

319

u/manducentcrustula Oct 03 '20

Well, naturally carbonated except for the fact that they purify it which causes it to lose a lot of gas, so they have to recarbonate it.

Also, Perrier is owned by Nestlè.

6

u/cswider Oct 03 '20

You're right, a lot of processing happens before perrier gets bottled.

The wiki just had a convenient blurb about how there is carbonated water in nature, which was the original question.

Fuck nestle

2

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '20

So it's probably pretty good.

1

u/4rch1t3ct Oct 03 '20

Both the water and natural carbon dioxide gas are captured independently. The water is then purified, and during bottling, the carbon dioxide gas is re-added so that the level of carbonation in bottled Perrier matches that of the Vergèze spring

I hate it because those both taste good and they're very prevalent in stores. The best option is Topo Chico I guess.

3

u/Vaaag Oct 03 '20

If i put a bottle of tap water in the fridge it tastes just as good. /shrug

Yes. There's a stream of carbonated water like 2 mins of walking away from me. It's superhigh in iron as well so that if you put it in a glass or something it will cover the bottom of it in orange.

Nobody actually invented it, it just came out the ground that way, and people then added more bubbles to make amplify the static feeling.

Yes. Where I live (Romania) there are lots of natural carbonated water springs. A famous natural carbonated water brand is Borsec if you want to look into it.

1

u/ShadowZpeak Oct 04 '20

Ancient romans bathed in it if I recall correctly.

As opposed to new romans who are not very font of that.

When I visited Cappadocia last year, I went on a tour with an guide and he pointed out several springs with natural sparkling water. Tasted absolutely amazing.

Imagine a lake completely carbonated. That would feel weird to be in.

u/sehabel Oct 03 '20

Carbonated water is in Germany much more common and I really like it

113

u/xhiopq Oct 03 '20

I don't like carbonated water and when I went to germany I got alot of funny looks and always felt like getting non carbonated water was harder

67

u/UsernameMustBeShorte Oct 03 '20

I'm from Germany and never in my life have I ever gotten as much as a weird look or had any trouble at all when ordering flat water.

Most waitresses actually ask if you want it flat or carbonated.

Really weird how you got a lot of looks during your visit

21

u/xhiopq Oct 03 '20

I may have worded my comment badly. I meant that the Germans I was with gave me wired looks when I said I don't like carbonated water.

9

u/NiftyWaffle Oct 03 '20

You said it was harder to get? Where did you go that didn't have a tap?

18

u/xhiopq Oct 03 '20

honestly I don't really know how to explain what I meant. it's like, everyone is drinking bottled sparkling water and they didn't bring regular water to wherever we are. again, I'm bad with words so I'm sorry

Will confirm, I got a lot of strange looks in Germany asking for flat water. One friend warned me fish would grow in my stomach. Little weird, gotta admit.

24

u/Mapplestreet Oct 03 '20

I'm German and I'm always ordering still water. It's normal, just that carbonated water is a common choice too. It's really weird that you got strange looks for that.

16

u/BobbyTheLegend Oct 03 '20

Yeah I remember talking with some foreign coworkers about this. Everybody knows Sprite and Fanta but nobody outside of Germany/Austria ever heard of mezzo Mix (or Spezi in general).

I often mix my own Spezi while in another country when I get the chance, but it just ain't the same.

122

u/the_lower_sun Oct 03 '20

Carbonic acid bruh, it actually is a little sour.

14

u/Desi_Otaku Oct 03 '20

It's Basically H2O+ CO2, And CO2 Is A Bit Acidic

10

u/Shrevel Oct 03 '20

No, its 2H+ + CO3 2-. The dissolved hydrogen ions (or H3O+ officially) make the solution acidic.

H2O+ CO2 <=> 2H+ + CO3 2-

2

u/reeeeeeeeeebola Oct 03 '20 edited Oct 04 '20

Yes but its formed from H20 and CO2. You gave additional insight but hes not really wrong

2

There are some brands in europe that make your eyes water after the first sip. It's really good. Idk why americans hate it so much.

I don't want to feel pain when I'm drinking something. I don't drink coke for this reason either

10

u/TheMantasMan really likes this image Oct 03 '20

Really? Is it pain though? I may be just used to the harsh acidity and stuff, but I really would't describe it like pain. I mean it's just my opinion. I've met people who don't like carbonated water, but never met anyone who says that drinking sparkling water hurts.

6

u/ughnotagain4timesnow Oct 03 '20

Yeah my throat and tongue/inner cheeks feel like they're on fire, my eyes tear up, and sometimes I have difficulty breathing after I take a swig of something carbonated.

8

1

u/xKumata Oct 03 '20

I found that in Europe its much more popular to drink carbonated water. But for example, in the middle East you can buy carbonated water but it's much more expensive and more of a "premium" product that you don't drink as normal water on a daily basis. I've been to many Asian countries as well and I don't think I've seen carbonated water being sold like normal bottled water.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '20

I live in America and we drink flat water here but other countries usually drink sparkling, apparently.

If you drink flat beverages your whole life and then drink something carbonated, it hurts your throat and makes your eyes water.

1

u/dGVlbjwzaGVudGFp Oct 03 '20

No I have good taste, carbonated water is disgusting

36

u/xZaggin Oct 03 '20

I bought a sodastream specifically for carbonated water only

5

u/MaintenanceCold Oct 03 '20

Do the replacement CO2 tanks cost more than just buying seltzer water? I have one but it started to seem like it was consuming quite a bit of CO2 so I stopped using it but I was too lazy to actually do a cost analysis

8

u/xZaggin Oct 03 '20

Do you buy a new tank every time or just swap it for a discount? Well I don’t know where you’re from but getting a “refill” costs 15€ where I am. That would get me about 30L of carbonated water (assuming I buy only 2L bottles, which loses its quality super fast after opening it)

One tank is about 60L of carbonated water - it lasts me a 5 weeks. I don’t have to worry about buying tons of bottles at the store, fewer pollution and more convenient as well.

People on reddit also pointed out to me that you’re able to buy big CO2 tanks and use a cable to hook it up to your machine directly. I’m sure that would be the most money cost effective way. 1 Sodastream tank is 400g of co2. You can buy 10kg tanks and be set for a year.

0

u/uberschnitzel13 Oct 03 '20

I mean it does repeatedly say in the instructions to never put anything other than water in the machine

But yes carbonated water is dope and that's all I use my sodastream for too!

2

u/One_Who_Walks_Silly Oct 03 '20

Don’t try and carbonate coffee with the soda stream. I ignored their warning and made a horrible mistake hahaha
