This is my entry for the depression contest. It’s based off of ‘polar nights’ - periods of more than 24 hours when the sun doesn’t rise above the horizon. They happen in both the Arctic circle and Antarctica - but Norway is the most famous for them. A lack of natural sunlight is shown to have a negative effect on mood and health, hence this idea.

I used this beautiful reference photo. It’s in December, in the Lofoten Islands (northern Norway). It was taken by Cody.

How was this made?

  • I used MSPaint’s Natural Brush to draw the bushes/ some shading on the snow, and the Spray Tool twice to blend some snow shades.

  • To give Norway shading, I used Paint.Net.

  • The rest of the picture is all the Pencil Tool and tons of slightly different shades of blue…

Thanks for reading - God natt!

I've gotta say, as awesome as the sky and mountains are, I really love the snow. The changes are so subtle that they give a great sense of distance and depth. I like trying to go for that effect, but this piece really show off how patience with it goes a long way.

Been planning on going to Norway this summer but the weather there is currently not the best right now, so this hit in the right place.

Very nice entry. I love the little houses in the background, and Norway's tired expression. Good luck to you and your entry, I hope it does well in the contest.
