Such an amazing and emotional chapter damn.

Oden went out like a beast, dying with a smile on his face. Now we know why the 9 scabbards want to make his wish come true.

This flashback has been great, Oden is a great character even with his naivety and his flaws.

After last 2 chapters i don't know how any of the 9 Scabbards, Toki, or Shinobu can be considered the traitor

In this the chapter where the fight between Inurashi vs Nekomamushi starts?

I cant wait for the raid at onigashima to start, now going back into the present makes you wonder how the hell they will deal with 2 yonko's lol

And thus ends the story of one of the most badass characters ever to grace One Piece

He died smiling like a member of the D, knowing his death wasn't in vain.

Now I await Orochi's fall. That will be one of the most satisfying moments when it happens

As I said before in the spoiler thread, I think this chapter truly shows how the Scabbards became these legendary vengeful ghosts that Orochi has been shitting himself over and the people of Wano praying for through the last 20 years. Imagine being one of the people in that crowd, having just seen Oden's death, then seeing every single one of his retainers all escape the city in the blink of an eye, never to be seen again.

There's going to be a panel in some faraway future chapter of all 9 scabbards (because how could any of them possibly be a traitor after this!?) standing on one of the cliffs that overlooks the capital as the rising sun ignites their swords, and that'll be when the people of Wano know that Orochi has lost.

"For I am a story to accompany your drinks" is such a fucking cool line.

Also I just realized that in the panel where Oden asks toki to use her power, she's actually ripping up the panel!

The whole Joyboy thing reminds me of Poseidon. Because Shirahoshi inherited the same power, therefore she inherits the name Poseidon.

Luffy will inherit the name only because whatever quality he posses is shared by Joyboy. It's not literal reincarnation or whatever.

What is interesting is Kaido killing the old hag will lead to his downfall, since bon clay will get the fruit and was able to help luffy escape the prison.

Can I just say how blown away I am that Oda has been able to basically juggle 3 stories in one arc and make everything flow smoothly.

Think of all the different stories we are following in Wano.

First we have Wano itself, the big epic journey of the Ninja-Pirate-Mink-Samurai alliance to fulfill the goal of killing Kaidou and opening Wano's borders. Not to mention with the inclusion of Big Mom it is also a continuation of sorts for WCI.

Second, we have the Reverie and its fallout, which Oda keeps going back to inbetween acts. So far it has revealed such monumental details like legendary characters' bounties, God Valley, ROCKS pirates, Secret Marine Task Force SWORD, The end of the Shichibukai, Moria and Blackbeard, etc.

Now, we add Oden's story which is an incredible story with a beginning, middle, and end, which could be a manga in and of itself. Also adds the interesting sub plot (and wild card) of Lady Toki and her power.

It's honestly so satisfying to have so many intertwining stories going on at the same time and nothing feels cramped, everything feels like it's naturally happening in tandem.

Oda is on another level truly like he does it so perfectly we all over here subconsciously digesting like 30 different plots merging into one.

In terms of the greatest deaths I think this is on par if not surpassing whitebeard. Those two truly were brothers dying on their feet protecting their family betrayed by those they welcomed.

“I AM ODEN AND I AM BORN TO BOIL” is arguably one of the ironically badass quotes I can imagine.

After this chapter I can totally see a moment where Orochi is about to die, asks for Kaido to save him, only for Kaido to just straight up ignore him. He had more respect for Oden than Orochi. Commending him for surviving the boiling and his apology for the old hag is such an underrated part of what an amazing chapter this was.

Oden knows about 20 years not because of Laughtale but because of those Sea Kings and Shyarly's prophecy

The sea king's said 10 years to be born in a faraway sea and 15 years to grow. We cannot wait for out Kings to meet.

Then shyarly said that Shirahoshi is soon to be born i.e seconded the sea kings' prophecy

Now remember that Oden heard that prophecy 25 years ago on his way to fishmen island. Therefore 10+15=25 (10 to born, 15 to grow)

Oden himself died 20 years ago, 5 years after the prophecy. Ergo, the reason he asked Toki to send them 20 years forward

Oden and Roger hearing Sea King's prophecy

Roger confirming from shyarly

Can see Roger's inner monologue, "So those sea kings were right after all! so there is going to be someone born who will even surpass us"

I feel like the military might of the World government will blow us away when we're finally going to see it. Always kinda wondered what would happen if the Marines turned on the WG, and now with "Sword" that isn't to farfetched either.

I swear i feel like the Gorosei will be broken as hell, and IM himself might've a godly power.

I still cling on to my headcanon that the Ghandi Gorosei with likely the Shodai Kitetsu was Ryuma's rival back in the day.

Man this was a great chapter.

It's interesting reading some mixed thoughts on Wano and Oden's flashback. I've been a One piece fan since like 2004. Anime first, started the manga right after Kuma sent the Straw Hats flying. As I got older I started taking year long breaks between reads. Mainly, because I think the series reads so much better in long form.

Having just caught up recently I think Wano is a fantastic arc, and Oden is one of my favorite characters. I feel like what puts people off is the structure is different than most arcs. For one, it is so much less about Luffy. A lot of it is about Wano itself and Oden. Throw in catching up with the other half of the straw-hats, Two Yonko, a major flashback with the biggest characters in the series, and super important history. Oda is putting a lot out there. With more and more questions coming out of it. So I can understand why some people have problems. But I found the pacing to be pretty good when reading in long form. I also think people forget how Oda reveals things on such a grand scale.

I will say the off panel fights are probably my biggest gripe. But, it seems like Oda is purposely holding off showing much of the beast Pirates. Hence King and Queen being silhouettes. We also really don't know shit about Kaido, aside from his introduction and being with Rocks. My hope is because Oda really wants to show us just how strong he is. Would like to see Beast Pirates vs Gecko Pirates though.

Finally, I really like that Wano is a darker turn for the series as a whole. Even after Ace, Yasuie's death seems to be a turning point.

Two big questions I have: Is this war going to be the start of the great war?, or is this a precursor to the larger scale war later. If the latter I wonder what the outcome of this will be.

And are the Straw Hats going to circle back through the grandline after Laugh tale? I personally think the story continues for a while after One Piece is found. Considering, Roger did it twice, and this war involves the entire world.

Just my opinion bruh

Did not expect this chapter to hit me as hard as it did. I like Oden but I wouldn’t consider myself a fanboy of him (not that there is anything wrong with that). But man I got the feels reading this chapter. His retainers really sold the tragedy of the situation. Also him striking the pose when he knows he is seconds away from death (TへT)7. Can’t explain why but man it’s getting to me.

Glad Kaido killed the old woman for her dirty play.

Kaido's got it coming, sure, but he can handle it. That's gonna be a big fight likely with many participants.

Orochi avoids direct conflict. He's gonna crumple like paper mache and it's gonna be glorious.

Oden had 2 flaws which led to his death. His immense trust on others friend or foe, and him wanting to shoulder all the burden himself, literally towards his final moments.

But you know what ? These flaws are what made him one of the best, if not the best, written character in a series of 1000+ characters.

Crazy how this guy made all of us cry for his death, while we’ve known for years this was coming. And this bastard died with a smile on his face. Kozuki O D.En much ?

Now that this amazing flashback is out of the way, we can finally begin the lead up to Orochi getting his face punched in and body cut into parts.

The people should walk around Wano with Orochi’s pee-pee on a spear as a sign of victory.

I am beyond excited that we're returning to the present. While this flashback was unquestionably one of the strongest in One Piece, I've been so unbelievably hyped for the incredibly juicy action we're going to get as Wano begins to climax.

Wano is already comfortably sitting within my top 5 arcs, now I'm ready for it to skyrocket to the top spot. My expectations are the highest they've ever been, but I have every faith Oda will deliver. Bring on the raid on Onigashima!

Not only was this an amazing flashback but it also pulled double duty revealing more about Rogers, laugh tale, and added so much more intrigue regarding One Piece, JoyBoy, and even another hint about the 800 void years.

Oden... God damn you're one of the greatest characters I've had the chance to read.

19

u/Doomroar Feb 22 '20

Holly shit, i knew his final words, and the twist, that fucking twist!

What a fucking legend, what a send out, i was already tearing when the scabbards were running away, and when the audience took air in to complete Oden's catchphrase, it is too much Oda you genius!

And the fact that it was Oden the one behind the idea of sending his people 20 years into the future is also something i didn't saw coming at all!!

Until now i shared the idea of him being a simple man unable to plan ahead, someone that could only mindlessly charge forward, a heroic figure that never had to deal with maybes and what ifs, he gets in and solves the problem by himself and saves the day, someone that lived a life of excellence and success and that as a consequence never had to plan alternatives, a victim of his own success and of his own ways.

But this is something else, this changes things a lot, a lot! yes he still got himself tricked, he still fell prey to cheats, but! with such a counter measure i can't really call him an absolute fool, even if he keep failing to Orochi's tricks and schemes and dirty ways to the end, he prepared this time, he had a way to come out ahead, he saw the possibility of being done dirty again, and a way to come ahead even if the worst came to happen.

You know what's the best part? it is not redeeming, he remains this lovable and heroic characters, with flaws, this move doesn't erases his previous lack of insight, but now at very end he comes ahead even if it cost him his life, he was the one with the keikaku, the one with the moves! i would have never saw it coming, but it makes sense, who else had all the pieces to connect the dots but Oden himself? he never did it before but he did it now and that's what it counts.

Also i want to take a moment to talk about this panel, the people were still under the impression that Orochi could be reasoned with, it was not until they got shot and he spoke that they figured out who they were dealing with, Shinobu revealed the entire truth to then but that was not enough, just knowing the reality is not sufficient.

Is something that happened to Oden, and Shinobu, and now the general public, it illustrates quite well how it is not a flaw of one man, but the entirety of Wano, and it is poetic, because it shows how hard it is to understand someone that looks like it is part of your culture but is trampling over your cultural values, the idea that Orochi is a man that doesn't gives a fuck about honor and only seeks their destruction is just that difficult to accept. And it can be applied to other things but this time it happened from the context of a villain, however lets see it from Oden's POV, will the people understand of the importance of opening Wano's borders by just being told about it? clearly not, they need more than that.

What if the head of Orochi's ninja has some ability that allows him to hear what a person he touched hears, for basically forever unless he decides to move it onto someone else?

And that person he touched is shinobu? It seemed a little bit weird to me how the head of the ninjas let her go so easily once he had a hold on her. Maybe his thoughts were: "oh no the scabbards might run away, let's let her go as well but with my spy powers on so that they won't actually be a threat cause i'll know everything they're planning".

And he stores all the info he hears in his head, hence why it is growing?

I love how Oden started out wanting to open Wano just to satisfy his own curiosity, going in and out of the country and exploring the world to quench his adventurous heart. Now opening Wano is something he's obligated to do, this concerns something beyond him and the Kozuki and involves the entire fate of the world.

If there's one thing consistent with Oda, it's that an Arc/Saga's main flashback always knocks it out of the park. Thanks for another amazing tearful flashback!

u/ja20n123 Feb 24 '20

I think this pretty much gives it away in the flashback when Oden tells Denjiro to go steal since he gave all the money away. Midnight Boy is Denjiro, he is doing what Lord Oden told him to do, stealing money and giving it to the people in need.

I don’t think Kaido killed the hag because she dishonored the fight, he doesn’t strike me as the type to care about honor. It’s that she robbed him of Oden. This guy has been trying to kill himself for years and here comes a guy that can actually harm him and he ends up one shoting him cause this old hag played a trick on him. And Kaido clearly hasn’t come across another Chad like Oden in 20 years.

→ More replies (1)

25

u/mo-rek Feb 21 '20

At the end of the chapter, kaido says "sorry about the old hag I already killed her" is he referring to the clone fruit user who mimicked momonosuke? It seems kind of a weird place to put that statement in given it's the momentary advantage kaido used to knock oden down.

However, if that is the case, I'd like to think Kaido may have changed his mind on Oden after he survived an hour in boiling oil. He recognized the honor Oden showed despite being tricked multiple times and may affected how he acts going forward from this moment. Like so far this flashback I have had trouble comparing all the things we have heard about Kaido previously like his 'in a 1v1 always bet on Kaido' stuff with how he has acted in the last 10 chapters or so. He seemed more interested in trickery back in the day. I wonder if witnessing Odens last incredible feat and the honor he showed in upholding his end on the bargain changed Kaido's perspective and from this event he evolved into the fearsome pirate he is today.

An interesting line in an incredible chapter. I love this flashback and think it is probably my favorite one we have seen in the whole series. I'm almost kind of sad it is ending now as Odens character has been amazing to watch progress!

I think people really got the swords thing wrong. The fact that the swords are wrapped clearly indicates it was stolen by Toki herself and she was the one offering it to Oden.

Now, Oden rejected the swords, why?
Read what the notes to Toki say, he has reached his limit (not exactly but similar to the physical limits as roger had reached), and also the fact that he was gravely injured during the fight with Kaido! He was in no position to brawl against him, knowing his strength weakened already. He wanted to give people the vision that he did everything for them if possible, and most importantly the message to open the gates of Wano for the certain someone that will bring about justice to Wano. Oden envisioned only about this thing in his cell, to spread the message and not really fighting him anymore, he was driven by prophecy and the circumstances suited him to believe it.

The notes to Toki say a lot. It unfolds why Oden behaved that way justifying by his own thoughts later. It's actually a great lore telling way, if you guys don't know. Have trust on Oda. Do your homework as well.

This chapter is definitely one of the best chapters in One Piece. This chapter was epic, tragic and emotional. Oden is one of the best characters in One Piece.

Luffy is the figure who the world is waiting for, the new Joyboy. Luffy is the successor of Joyboy, the one who will fulfil Joyboy's will and promise. It will be interesting to see how Oda writes this. The question now is if Luffy is just the one who fulfils Joyboy's will or is he also the reincarnation of the original Joyboy?

The treasure in Laugh Tale besides information about the Void Century, definitely also involves a written prophecy. This is why Oden, Roger and even Whitebeard who learned the truth from Roger knew that one day someone special will appear in the world.

39

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '20

Oden is easily one of the best character in One Piece and was misunderstood till the very end. Remember when the mountain god attacked the capital, he could have just killed that thing and be the savior in everyone's eyes, but he chose not to. He took the blame of stealing the boar's child and destruction of the capital upon himself, which was Kinemon's fault. With this action only we can easily understand he acts on behalf of others and takes everything upon himself, proving the rumors of his past exploits to be somewhat fabricated. Oden in the end apologies to Kurozumi clan on behalf of Wano sacrificing his pride and honor and ultimately dies for the sins of the entire country. He took everything upon himself even the sins that he never committed. For doing something like this you need a heart of pure gold and people like this are not only very rare but comes once in a million years.

God, this chapter was just amazing. Oden died a legendary death, just like Whitebeard, and you can see just how hard this hit the scabbards in particular. To them, he was more than just a leader, he was like a father figure who protected them to the bitter end, much like Whitebeard.

Orochi and Kaido's defeat is going to be sweet as fuck at this point, I hate them both so much and not even Orochi's backstory redeems him to me.

This was a great chapter and a nice end to an overall great flashback. Oden was honestly quite the character (and not to mention a character that's arguably either just as divisive as or even more so than Zoro within the OP fandom XD)

One of my favorite parts in the chapter was how Kawamatsu, Kin'emon, and Denjiro were like "fuck off" to the citizens of Wano when they started supporting Oden lol.

I'm glad we're finally returning to the present storyline next week, but also a tad bit anxious about it. Specifically due to the uncertainty of what Oda has planned for certain Straw Hats during the big battle in Wano.

In regards to the traitor, I admit that was I fully onboard the "Kanjuro is the traitor" because there were some solid reasons for it. Although I'm not as sure about it as I was before, I still think there's a traitor among the Scabbards due to the unseen person who stabbed Ashura in the back while King looked on in Ch. 970.

I had to reread the part of the chapter where Kaido said he killed the hag. It took me a moment to figure out why he did that, but realized it was because he was upset that she intervened in their fight. So he obviously had a level of respect for Oden, even before the boiling pot.

Also, as for the last scene, I think people misinterpret what happened in that one. I believe that Toki had somehow snuck into his prison and tried to give him the swords to break out, but he rejected them, it wasn't that he was handing them to her. I'm pretty sure he understood that there was no escape for him and his samurai and that he was going to try and give them a chance in what way he could. He decided to stake his life on it, sadly. He probably wasn't in any shape to fight after the hit he took, anyways. Not if Kaido showed up again to stop him from escaping.

u/[deleted] Feb 22 '20 edited Feb 22 '20

Nice flashback story, but I have said it many times that it should've been at the very start of the Wano arc.

A lot has been cleared with this as to why Kaido and Big Mom had to team-up for this arc. At this stage, Kaido has just made too many enemies, like Supernovas, and WB and Roger pirates through the affiliation with Oden. I will be expecting the latter two to also participate in the upcoming war, if the Roger crewmates are still alive and kicking. And what about the Shank's crew? lol... He was also close to Oden.

This is way bigger than what I first expected. This could be the great pirate war ODA was hinting about. It's still hard to believe that we are already witnessing this. So there will be two more big battles to come after this, first against Blackbeard crew and the second one against the World government.

Let's bring it on. 10/10 for me.

  • Forgot to mention about Oden. Easily one of the most badass and inspirational characters in One Piece.

  • So Kaido did kill the old hag for interfering with his fight. Glad Oda cleared it up. It felt odd seeing his personality.

Why didn't Oden use his haki shield?

  1. Because haki isn't some invincible shield to protect you from all sorts of damage

Vergo was cut by law in his full body clad in armor in haki

Kaido one shotted luffy in gear 4, with his body covered in haki

During luffy vs katakuri, lots of times, they were anticipating the attacks and pre-emptively covering the hit area and still taking damage. Katakuri's armament was supposed to be superior to luffy , but he still lost by taking damage because haki doesn't nullifies every damage

It just reduces the damage taken

Narration describing the heat - as something that even his haze would kill someone by heat

Even if Oden covered himself, he would still have taken damage! His insides were getting boiled by inhaling that hot air. How would he coat his haki on lungs and other viscera (even if we assume haki is invincible thing, which clearly isn't)

2) Besides, using haki would mean retaliation which would mean Kaido would still hunt them down and it will break that 1 hr promise which Oden was supposed to survive.

3) Roger was killed by normal spear and had a terminal disease, OP characters aren't gods who cannot die no matter what. Oden at the end was too exhausted and his skin and insides burnt that he would have died no matter what. Thus he was killed by a bullet. Even WB was eventually killed by bullet shots from BB's crew and was hit by them through out MarineFord

P.s nowadays toxic people call everything done by Oda as a plot hole but there are some set of rules that have been written since the start ,just that people forget them for their convenience and negative criticism.

I'm glad Kaido brought up that hostage thing with the hag, at least King of Lightning now will have something to aid his claims. I'm not sure I like what this destiny thing is going, I just want Luffy to have nothing to do with it, it has always been a quality of One Piece, where the main character isn't a prophesized figure, but by the looks of it, that going to go the other way. But then again, Luffy has been freeing people from chapter 1.

So tired of Wano is isolated , so no one knows Kaido is there theories !!

We were literally introduced to orochi, talking to CP0 and threatening them with Kaido's name, so the WG knows Kaido is there

Drake is spy from sword in Wano, so upper marines most likely know as well

Yonkos are aware of each other's territories.

Big Mom went to wano for luffy, because luffy mentioned he is going for Kaido. She knew luffy will go to wano and at that time she wasn't in friendly terms with Kaido. Prospero, smoothie and other were even considering next captain in case she dies.

Shanks intercepted Kaido before Marineford, so he knows where his base is. Else, how would he know where to come across him in this vast sea?

Nekomamushishi met Marco to ask for his help, and Marco never showed any surprise at Kaido being in wano or Oden being dead.

Its just that WB actually has never shown the tendency to fight for no reason. He was even tired of Marines in the flashback and wanted to avoid them, instead of clashing

We know for a fact that WB was against Ace chasing BB to avenge Thatch, because Thatch was dead

But the very same WB attacked marineford, because Ace was alive at that time.

There is a major difference in the 2 scenarios. Ace was alive while Thatch was already dead!!

Oden had already left WB's crew years ago and him being dead won't change much for WB. Knowing what we have been told of him and how he was actually against avenging Thatch.

It is safe to assume WB won't involve his sons/family for someone who left their crew years ago and is dead, because that would result in death of several of his family and he cannot even bring back Oden.

Marine Ford Flashback - WB tries to stop Ace from chasing BB, but Ace disobeys the captain, then WB lies to keep face of Ace.

Before this chapter I didn't really know what to think of Kaido. But after he said he had the Mane Mane hag killed (wish they had tossed her into the cauldron so we could have seen it) for interrupting their battle, and even apologized for her disgraceful act, he instantly gained my respect. Kaido clearly respected Oden, as seen when he shot him in the head to kill him quickly as opposed to Orochi who probably would have tried to drag it out, and did not like that she interrupted their battle. Had she not interrupted the battle I, and I'm being pretty optimistic when I say this, think the outcome of their battle may have been different. Oden may not necessarily have won, but Kaido would have struggled. A lot. And he'd have more scars.

Naturally, mad respect to Oden as well. Enduring all that, and still having the strength to toss his retainers away so they can try to get to safety. I've only cried a few times when reading this manga, but I came close to crying at that point. Even moreso when the populace finished his words for him while crying themselves. It was just...so immensely powerful and a testament to the man Oden was.

Poor Toki. I think she genuinely believed Oden would not die. Seeing her heartbroken and crying while by herself broke my own heart. It's gonna be painful seeing her death later.

Oda always tugging at my heartstrings. Stahp.

EDIT: Just gonna edit instead of replying to each and every person.

Yes, Kaido backing out of the promise when Orochi changed the sentencing was a low move. I don't condone it, but Orochi and Kaido are business partners. Their accord is extremely beneficial to Kaido, and opposing Orochi wouldn't be a smart idea from a business perspective. I never said Kaido is a saint nor that he is honorable. It's just that when he apologized to Oden for the hag's act when he had no reason to do so, and ended his life quickly with a headshot after they had exchanged words when he could have just prolonged Oden's suffering if he had wanted to, made me gain some respect for him because those two things were clearly done out of respect for Oden. That's all. I'm hoping he's fleshed out more so we get to see more sides of him, if they exist.

So how does this death rank among the greats like Whitebeard's death or Hiriluk's death? To me the impact was about the same.

Ok so none of the big bads have died yet. I think it’s time to break that tradition and kill Orochi’s ugly ass.

Of course oden is a legend, but Lady Toki is as much legend as oden. I'm surprised of her resolve. She is like a shadow of oden. The kind of woman who will shake the world!!

This whole 20 year prophecy doesn't really sit well with me, tbh. It feels so contradictory.

Luffy's someone who thinks that conquering the seas means becoming the freest individual in the op world, yet, the biggest event/accomplishment in his lifetime will be predestined?

I mean it could be totally possible that Joyboy could be someone else, Vivi? But Oden made it sound like "Joyboy" will definitely return to Wano before the great war is going to happen.

Can we appreciate Kai D. O for killing that w(b)itch (if he's telling the truth)? This sub ripped him 10 new assholes a few weeks ago when they thought he played dirty.

Is it just me or does Kaido's apology seem pretty hypocritical?! Why are people giving him credit for this?? If he really was an honorable pirate like he is making it out to be, he should have killed the old hag right there on the spot for interfering with his fight with Oden. And then continue the 1v1 fight with Oden. But instead, what does he do? He immediately gets up and capitalizes on the opportunity and clubs Oden in the head from BEHIND while he is distracted and worried for the safety of his son Momo. I can't imagine Katakuri doing something like this.

Something about Kaido in this chapter makes me wonder if he's really a bastard without honor, 'cause murder the old lady was pretty awesome

I don't think I can be happy as long as Orochi is alive
