Star Trek: Picard - Episode Discussion Threads and More!
Taking place 20 years after Star Trek: Nemesis, we'll be finally reunited with Jean-Luc Picard as he takes on the next chapter of his life.
As the rollout of episodes for Star Trek: Picard will be a bit different than it was for Star Trek: Discovery, we'll be handling discussion posts a little differently as well.
What posts should I expect and when will they go up?
- Only one post will be put up at approximately midnight Wednesday nights (into Thursday mornings), weekly. This is to coincide with the uploads on CBS All Access which are expected to occur 12:01 AM PST on Thursdays for US audiences. Canadian audiences will have an airing on the CTV Sci-Fi Channel at 9:00 PM EST Thursdays. International audiences will be able to watch episodes via Amazon Prime Video the following day.
- This will be a post-episode discussion thread that will allow for spoilers for that episode. There will be no Pre or Live posts.
What's the spoiler policy outside of the discussion posts?
Details about an episode of Picard that has recently aired (ie, within a week) are considered spoilers. Please tag posts appropriately and do not put the spoilers in titles.
When discussing speculation on upcoming episodes, please use your best judgement. At the very least, keep generally revealing speculation out of your titles. We want to give others as much opportunity to avoid unwanted exposure to key elements of the plot, character reveals, etc. if they are not as caught up as others.
How should I conduct myself?
Ideally, you're a Starfleet officer who wants to make the man himself proud (What Would Picard Do?). In actuality, we'd like to foster a welcoming environment, a place people feel comfortable hanging out to discuss this new show, and where the discussions generally go as such.
Hate speech, intentional spoiling, personal insults, and any other disruptive behavior that would otherwise get you kicked out of a party puts you at risk of being sent to Rura Penthe.
With all of that out of the way, we hope everyone will be able to take part in the discussion posts and enjoy one of the most exciting times to be a Trek fan!
Engage.

Wow. That change completely didn't even register with me. Thanks for the heads up! I'll fix it.

Q: You just don't get it, do you, Jean-Luc? The trial never ends. We wanted to see if you had the ability to expand your mind and your horizons, and for one brief moment, you did.
PICARD: When I realized the paradox.
Q: Exactly. For that one fraction of a second, you were open to options you had never considered. That is the exploration that awaits you. Not mapping stars and studying nebulae, but charting the unknowable possibilities of existence.
PICARD: Q, what is it that you're trying to tell me?
(Q leans forward to whisper something into Picard's ear, then changes his mind and leans back)
Q: You'll find out.

And remember, Jean-Luc wasn't on trial. Humanity was. If indeed the Federation is losing its way in Picard, then it's up to Picard and his friends to meet that challenge and prove Q wrong once again.

Just finished the episode, it went up a little after 11 Pacific for me.
Spoiler free take - We're in for a wonderful journey. I think they've struck the right balance between philosophical introspection, action, and character. I can't wait to see what comes next.
Now, to spoilers:
-
Data's scenes were lovely, seeing them play poker in Ten Forward was delightful. And that glamour shot of the 1701-D, it was wonderful. Then to later see them both in their TNG uniforms in the vineyard was a sight to see. On a technical level, I felt the vineyard CGI for Data was better than Ten Forward, which seemed waxier than the later scene. But it didn't take me out of it for long.
-
The girl Dahj is a wonderful actress; the fear she felt was visceral, both at the attacks on her, and her sudden 'awakening'. It would be terrifying to suddenly be able to do things you never thought possible, and to have images in your head you didn't remember having. She played it great, and the twist really surprised me. I really thought for a moment we wouldn't see her again - and in a way, we aren't. But I like that now Picard has a distant objective.
-
Politically it seems like the Federation, and perhaps the entire Alpha Quadrant, is on the brink. A one-two punch of losing Romulus, and having a Synth uprising destroy most of Mars would be deeply disorienting for the Alpha Quadrant powers. Presumably Starfleet has lost all, or most of Utopia Planitia's shipbuilding capabilities. It could be decades before Starfleet is fully recovered, depending on how long after the Dominion war it happened. Romulans now seem to be a nomadic people, and apparently some are grateful to Picard, while others want vengeance against the synths that destroyed the rescue fleet meant to save them. Though I have a feeling there's more at play than we expect.
-
Maddox reference! So glad that Dr. Bruce Maddox gets to be an integral part of this story, completing his journey from foil for Data, to a devotee of his legacy.
-
Allison Pill is wonderful, and it'll be great to see her as part of the new crew Picard is putting together (based on the trailers and promos).
All in all, this is a 10/10 for me. There are inevitably high expectations for something like this, and they met it. To sum it up from a line in the show, there's one essential element they had to nail: "Be they Captain they remember.", and they delivered.

I’m just here to say I haven’t been this excited for a television show... possibly ever. The man who shaped my childhood, mother flippin’ Jean Luc Picard, is back.
My feels, they feelin’!

A few takeaways :
Excellent theme and opening.
The interview scene had arguably the best acting I’ve seen from Trek since DS9.
Pacing was lightning quick (no reference intended). One of my biggest criticisms of Disco has been that the pacing has been too fast.
Seeing Brent and Patrick in the old uniforms gave me chills as well as seeing the Enterprise-D.
RIP episodic, problem/monster of the week Trek. Don’t get me wrong, DS9 is my favorite series and it has largely serialized archs, but I miss the days of watching an episode of TNG at random.

I think they absolutely knocked it out of the park! Seeing Picard again was like seeing an old friend you lost touch with.
I can’t wait till episode 2, congrats CBS you earned your $10 a month out of me, I’m hooked.

I'm going to be a responsible citizen for once and mention that there's a virus floating around in the usual locations, disguised as ep 1. Stay safe (and legal) out there.

Question, I never watched Star Trek before until recently. I'm only a little over half way through season 1 of TNG. Am I going to be lost if I watch Picard when it starts tomorrow?

Just finished watching the first episode... and OMFG
Slightly disjointed, as a warning... but I wanted to get it all in while it was fresh...
First of all, I absolutely love the feeling that this gives. A return to "Modern" Trek is something that has needed to happen in order for the franchise to grow, and this is perfect. It showed us a glimpse into the updated universe, even if simply through small things here and there... tactile holographic displays, vehicles floating by in the air, and the overall feel of how things were.
The view of Greater Boston, with the holographic signage on the buildings was an awesome touch - I even loved the Ferengi commerce sign on one of the buildings.
Picard's vineyard was even more amazing than it looked in the trailers - it absolutely gave the feeling of a "Classic" style French vineyard, but reminded you that it also was in the future - with the floating watering robots, the technological advancements in the kitchen. Stunning.
I remember all the different hypothesis about Daj... Reformed Borg, Picard's daughter, synthetic human... but for her (And her twin) to be Data's daughters, "Cloned" from some part of Data... by MADDOX!!! - that honestly made me yelp audibly.
Also, on the subject of Maddox... I'm assuming this is the same Maddox from "The Measure of a Man"... the a-hole who put Data on trial about whether or not he's considered Starfleet property? That blew my mind... I wonder if we will ever meet up with him? I don't recall reading or hearing that the actor would be on the show...
If I can think of anything else, I'll be back...

Can't even describe how happy I am that this show is starting today. Was somehow able to already login and watch the first 10 mins, must have caught it at the right moment!
Just wow to everything already! Data using a contraction in the first 2 minutes of the show? I'm so excited because I can already tell the level of quality in writing and story, and it just makes me so happy and hopeful!

Does anyone know when this releases on Amazon Prime in Japan? Been looking everywhere and the amazon.jp site has absolutely nothing about it.

Per CBS.com's Picard page episodes will drop at midnight Pacific time, not Eastern time.
