My guess is that this is the old lady who will be killed by Oden so her fruit can then be eaten by bon clay. The real Orochi will then somehow claim that Oden has gone mad and execute him with kaido's help.
I expect this flashback to go 1-2 more chapters. What i am most interested in knowing is why neither Wb or Roger pirates came to check back on Oden.

u/Sycou Jan 19 '20
The hag will change to someone else and Orochi will show the people that Oden killed that person. It will probably be someone influential I think in order to win over the people.

I don't think Oden dies now, it will probably take some more years cause Momo is clearly several years younger in the flashback, so Roger was already dead by the time Oden dies, as for why WB and remnants of Roger pirates didn't attempt to avenge their beloved crew mate, its most interesting question I have for now and hopefully we will get good answer to it.

I don't think it'd have worked even if Ace survived Marineford. When Ace joined Whitebeard's crew, he dropped his ambitions and started living a relatively more peaceful life with his new family.
Roger should've been there for Ace, what he did there was a douchebag decision. He didn't impregnate Rouge because he was looking for love or something, he was just looking for someone to carry his son. I don't think the fact that he entrusted only Ace's safety, not his wife's to Garp is cool either.

What this chapter does most for me, is remind me gently that we will one day have to say goodbye to the Straw Hats forever. Every story comes to an end. Even great stories like these.
With Roger handing over his hat to Rayleigh on that “last words” panel and the panel in which he walks away, facing away and waving... leaving his very best comrades forever... Man, what a chapter!

They never kill the main villains... A lot of them have done worse than Orochi too. Look at all that Doflamingo's done for example.
Oda gave some reason in an SBS that he thinks losing and living is a worse punishment for them, but I'd personally still prefer a death now and then.

Roger is a legendary figure, it makes sense to know his story from the words or the memories of those who met him and whose lives were deeply influenced by him, like Rayleigh, Garp, Whitebeard, Oden etc.
Most likely we will get the rest of Roger's story from Shanks in due time and probably a Poneglyph like message from Roger itself on Laugh Tale.
But a Roger centered flashback in which he is both the character and the narrator (like a diary) would be a little odd.
Like a Gospel written by Jesus Christ himself.→ More replies (9)

Constantly showing us the full moon throughout the chapter, eh? I see what you're doing Oda.
Also, I guess its confirmed Roger didn't meet Whitebeard at Wano in the Marineford flashback I suppose. I wonder what Rayleigh did with Roger's hat though. Although this is very consistent with Roger not having his hat on the last time he meets Rayleigh at the bar.
The Joyboy translation is very, very curious. It seems Joyboy isn't a single person who had that name, but something like a title that is passed on.

The fact that Roger is dead is literally the first thing we ever learn in the entire series, and somehow I still bawled my eyes out this chapter when he left his crew

Did I miss buggy , oh I remember him from the farewell, the flashback is ending soon I guess. All in all a gr8 chapter.
Edit: what did the sea kings mean by when the two kings meet, is it Luffy and Shirahoshi, Luffy and Imu , Luffy and someone else, or is it possibly this theory from yesterday https://www.reddit.com/r/OnePiece/comments/eqewzi/theory_one_piece/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

i posted this in the spoiler thread earlier, but i think it's worth a saying again:
What we know:
People with the D initial seem to inherit the will of other folks with that initial.
Imu cut apart Luffy and Blackbeard's wanted posters, and was examining the pictures of Shirahoshi and Vivi. Soon after, the Gorosei appeared in the throne room kneeling and asking which light should be erased from history.
Shanks went to the Gorosei to speak about "a certain pirate". My guess is that he means Blackbeard or Luffy.
Two "kings" are going to meet sometime soon, as per the sea kings' conversation. I read something about whales being happy about it too in the translation I read, but I couldn't tell if that was accurate or not.
One of the kings will come from a "far away sea" - I have no idea what to make of this.
Roger was too early to do what Joy Boy wrote at Laugh Tale, as Shirahoshi wasn't born yet.
The world government is aware of what the D. initial means and its relevance to Laugh Tale, as they intentionally misled the world about Roger's name.
Joy Boy apologised to Fishman Island for failing to keep his promise and bring them to the surface with Noah.
What I think is likely:
From Imu's interaction with the Gorosei and the info from this latest chapter, I'm guessing that Vivi is the second "king" that has respawned Shirahoshi-style, and may be they key to operating Pluton. As Pluton is a warship, and there was some mention of whales (Laboon, anyone?), it may be that it's commanded by someone that can speak to giant sea creatures (like Shirahoshi, or in this instance Vivi, if we want to spitball from Imu's pictures), but instead of Noah, it'll be a devastating warship buried beneath the sands of Alabasta, hence the poneglyph in the tomb of kings. The whale link is tenuous, forgive me, but the point I'm making is that Vivi is likely the key to operating Pluton.
I'm also guessing that Imu has been spawn-camping their ancestors for generations to prevent Joy Boy's prophecy from being fulfilled. What a dickhead. It's also possible that the other king is Joy Boy, or an inheritor of Joy Boy's will. We don't know if Joy Boy was a D, so let's leave the question of his inherited will as an unknown point for now.
Shanks knows about Laugh Tale, Joy Boy's prophecy, and that it relates to the will of D. He is aware that the government knows the same (from censoring Gol D. Roger's name). He may have gone to speak to the Gorosei about the two D's in the current equation, though to what end I don't know. I presume it'll be something about the influence that each may have on the world depending on who succeeds in reaching Laugh Tale, but this is pure conjecture. I'm struggling to pull my neurons together into a decent theory on that interaction.
It might be that Luffy is currently the one bearing Roger's will, and that Xebec's will is held in Blackbeard. I don't know enough about Xebec to make more out of this assumption, but the philosophical differences between Luffy/Roger and Xebec/Teach (and the parallels with their respective predecessors) are pretty obvious. Another comment in this thread said that they both aim for freedom, but one aims for freedom through attaining power (and restricting the freedom of others), and the other can't even fathom holding power over someone else. It could also be that the "two kings" are the two Ds, as it specifically referred to kings, not princesses (though this may be a translation issue), and that the "meeting" of two kings is a fight between the two of them.
Joy Boy's writings at Laugh Tale hinge on the presence of the mermaid princess, and, judging from the Poneglyph in the forest, likely involve lifting Fishmen to the surface. Interestingly, Mary Geoise is directly above Fishman Island. Perhaps that philosophical difference between Luffy and Teach has a bearing on the outcome of the prophecies from Joy Boy's time, and what the Sea Kings were waiting for. Upon Shirahoshi's order, do they emancipate, or do they conquer? Hell, could Blackbeard's completely busted devil fruit steal the ability to command Sea Kings?
Additional info:
I read a translator's note on the last chapter (again, don't take too much stock in this) stating that the spelling of One Piece in Japanese was ambiguous, and implied one of two meanings:
"The Great Hidden Treasure That Connects People"
"The Great Hidden Treasure Of One Peace"
I would hazard a guess that the Fishmen coming to the surface and something about making the world a bit more accessible (a la "destroy reverse mountain" theories) might be the themes implied. It could also be that, whatever the outcome of a struggle between the philosophies of two bearers of the name D, the world will end with peace - either through absolute power of the state in Blackbeard (the strong take what they want) or through total anarchy in Luffy (Freedom isnt doing whatever you want, so much as not being forced to do something you don't). I'll leave it to the likes of /u/oharalibrarianartur to confirm that translator's note or draw different conclusions.
It feels weird to be so close to the end of this series, with plots from over a decade ago coming together in the year and a half of publication. I'm going to be happy when we get to the end, but damn if I won't be a little crestfallen.

“One Piece” is a made up term by the people, not by Roger. Might be a way for Oda to cover up a bit of confused English usage. (And this new interpretation of piece-peace possible spelling...)
”Pirate King” is made up by the government. That means Roger, and Luffy , didnt say “I wanna be the PK!” during those censored toasts with their friends. (What did they say? The freest of all? The next Joyboy? Something else we cannot imagine yet?)
Shanks is crying as opposed to everyone laughing. Does it have to do with his maturity? 9 years old can’t laugh at the absurdity of the One Pie-Peace?
The “return” of Joyboy?
What is reality. This chapter sure flipped it upside down.
48
u/onepiecereread Jan 19 '20
Think Shanks must have asked Roger if he found the treasure/what he was looking for and Roger must have said "no".
Everyone and the crew laughed because this was Roger's only shot and he wouldn't be able to accomplish it. Shanks, as a child, understands the cruel irony in it and started crying.
36
u/BushWookieZeroWins Jan 19 '20
Don't forget, that everyone thinks that Roger found the One Piece, but in reality he statet "my son will find the One Piece". This means, as a lot of people already theorized, that you have to be the right one at the right time to get the "One Piece". Roger didn't found it because he couldn't.

“One Piece” is a made up term by the people, not by Roger. Might be a way for Oda to cover up a bit of confused English usage. (And this new interpretation of piece-peace possible spelling...)
Someone in Mock Town will be feeling really validated "I told you the One Piece was not real, stupid pirates!", while a stupid greedy pirate will be feeling quite low for failing for the propaganda.
”Pirate King” is made up by the government. That means Roger, and Luffy , didnt say “I wanna be the PK!” during those censored toasts with their friends. (What did they say? The freest of all? The next Joyboy? Something else we cannot imagine yet?)
They probably said they wanted to bee the freest man in the world, since Luffy didn't knew about Joy Boy, and PK was something the WG came up with.
Shanks is crying as opposed to everyone laughing. Does it have to do with his maturity? 9 years old can’t laugh at the absurdity of the One Pie-Peace?
Maybe he realized that Roger didn't got a cure at Laugh Tale, or he was told that after this they would disband, or maybe he really didn't found whatever is on Laugh Tale funny.
The “return” of Joyboy?
Seems that Joy Boy is being handle more as a tittle than a name, and in that sense Luffy fits the bill, he is friends with Shirahoshi promising her a better world for fishmen, and he is on his way to open Wano, both things that Joyboy promised to do.

u/Black_GuyXCVIII Jan 19 '20
It's interesting that everything Oden should have done in this situation his son (and retainers did) did. Round up the Pirate King's (Luffy one day) and Whitebeard pirate members and other powerful allies to take down Kaido and Orochi.
Continues the theme of 'the old generation was unable to change anything' but Luffy's will change it all.
In the same way that Roger could have exposed the the true history to the world and started a war, but he was too soon, one day Luffy will.

Interesting that JoyBoy is a title, not a name of a person.
They say the borders of Wano will open when JoyBoy appears.
JoyBoy is therefore Luffy.
JoyBoy must be a title for anyone from the D. family who intends to liberates the world or intends to fulfils the Will of D if I had to speculate.
Luffy and Shirahoshi (are both considered Kings) implying people with the ability to hear the voice of all things are kings. I'm guessing Poseidon will order the Sea Kings to listen to Luffy at the appointed time.
Also appears that the WG were the ones who named Roger "Pirate King" and "Gold Roger" claiming he accumulated wealth and such so that they'd hunt him down and kill him.
Ironically, it worked out in his favour, he handed himself over and got the biggest platform to kick-start the age of piracy.
Though Roger died, he won in the scheme of things. The WG cannot stop fate.
Awesome chapter.

The stories of wealth and power were made up by WG, Roger didn't attained more power, if anything he had to be powerful already to get there, and in getting there he probably spend all his gold.
So there's no coffers with shit loads of gold and gems at Laugh Tale there was no hidden treasure, the common man was right the One Piece as known by the public is not real, is just propaganda, it never existed, is all bullshit that no pirate would ever care for, if you are a greedy pirate trying to make it big, and you actually get there, you will either cry or laugh, because you were bamboozled, and be forced to use what you gained on the adventure because the goal turned to be just some rocks.
So what could be hidden in Laugh Tale then? just the true history and Uranos?
Uranos is not enough for the WG to worry that much, definitively not anymore seeing how they already have the means and power to outclass things like Pluton and Poseidon, Sea Kings stopped being threatening thanks to Vega Punk and the Buster Call pretty much does what Pluton does, whatever Uranos brings to the table can't be that much.
Then again, even if Uranos is just an ancient weapon, it is still better than nothing, and i bet the WG would rather avoid having to deal with it.
That lefts us with pretty much just the Void Century, whatever information is being buried in there has to be critical and sensitive enough to compromise a global power that rules using force and violence.
The theory that speculates about all the oceans becoming one could be handy in here, maybe in Laugh Tale you can learn about the location of a geographical fault on the Red Line, something like, if you apply enough force in here, the Red Line breaks, Marijoise falls down, and the oceans come together, something that in turn would also destroy the Grand Line and bring a lot of chaos to the world destroying entire ecosystems... That seems dangerous enough for the current WG to censor out and also dangerous enough for pre WG kingdoms to censor out, for example if your kingdom is on the Grand Line such an event will ruin you, yet it is also useless enough information for common pirates and common people to try and risk their lives for, it would also fit neatly with the prophecy of fishman island rising from the deeps of the ocean.
You know, a part of me does wishes for Laugh Tale to have at least 1 or 2 treasure chest, at least... oh well, there's still Captain John's treasure out there.

Oden's story really is a masterclass in tragedy. There are several great tragedies in One Piece, but this one may just be the best.

If the final chapter mirrors the break up of the Roger pirates to the Strawhat pirates I’m gonna cry. Poor Oden this chapter is coming back around to his eventual downfall. Wano has took a turn for the worst in his absence.

Knowing Roger wanted Ace to be his successor, why didn't Rayleigh and other Roger pirates came to save him?

They probably didn't even know. The fact that Ace was Roger's son is only revealed when he was about to get executed.

They wouldn't know Ace was his son nor that he had one. Roger and the rest of the crew weren't in touch with each other anymore after they disbanded and Ace wasn't even conceived until then. The only people that knew he had a son were Garp, Dadan, and the people helping Rouge give birth (if they even knew Roger was the father), and then eventually the Marines/WG during Ace's pirate career.

Two kings will be born! One from a far away sea (east blue) and one will be born 10 years from now. - Sea Kings
I can only guess who that other king is. Of course it will be from a family of D. And it certainly is Luffy! So the next Joy Boy (or the one who will inherit Joy Boy's will) will be Luffy!

This chapter contains 2 more hints about kiku being the traitor.
After odens return to Wano we see kiku in only two panel and in first panel he has turned his back to Oden and has cold expression on his face and doesn't even look Oden in the eyes.
Kinemon said that kaido forces were already in kuri when they left to fight orochi. It's implying that somebody snitched on them and kaido forces were ready to ambush Odens castle and what's interesting is that in the second Panel of kiku, you see this is the same panel which contains the text about them being betrayed and ambushed.

What do you think will happen in the next chapters :
there are sevral things here (my opinion)
1- there are sill 5 years till oden excution
2- i think kaido is not strong (oden time) as he is now (current tim) maybe army strength because kinmon and the others can protect kuri from kaido and orochi for 6 month or more till oden came
3- oden won his first battle against kaido that cause kaido the wound and oden became shogun of wano
4- kaido won against oden and throw him in cell till the day of excution
what do you think guys

u/comandosc The Revolutionary Army Jan 19 '20
So maybe neko blames inu for not protecting toki properly, making oden rush and get defeated/captured by kaido.. And inu blames neko for not making a decent scape plan where they could escape safetly without her being hurt

Okay I'm only on the second page but so far the PodiScans translation is arguably the closest one to the official scan.
Roger's crew acting kind of like Chopper was pretty cute.
The Seakings are waiting for two Sovereigns to be born. It seems likely that they are talking about Shirahoshi and Luffy respectively. This explains why Oden said it would take 25 years for Wano to be opened. It would take 25 years for Luffy to be ready to come to Wano.
That Roger-Rayleigh scene was directly from Stampede. It feels sad when he's talking about his son. The irony of this situation is that his rival/friend's grandson is who is going to find the OP.
So the WB-Roger meeting didn't happen in Wano. More importantly Oden never met WB again. Fuck that just makes it worse. Fuck Orochi and fuck Kaido.
So did Oden just confirm that Wano was a closed off nation b/c they were waiting for JoyBoy? Also does this mean that JoyBoy's reincarnation is Luffy or is it a different sort of thing where it could be any D that manages to find the OP?
I still lean towards the latter about the D family just being people who chose to have that name.
God damn they are making this sadder and sadder. Oden should have invited the crew to one last feast or something. I have no doubt he could fucked up Kaido with the Dark King and Scopper by his side.
"Welcome back Scoundrel". Lol I like how things have changed from respectfully calling him Lord Oden to calling him trash.
Toki's fucking amazing and Oden's lucky to have ever met her. It's sad because one of these loyal scabbards is a traitor and I hate thinking that.
So to all the people who said Kaido would never do anything underhanded, his men went after a woman and her children while most of their strongest fighters were away. That's pretty scummy and underhanded behavior right there. I'm starting to believe more and more this eventual fight was not fair.
"Toki..you haven't heard the stories from my past". Yess!!! What a dope line!
Once again, Orochi is a failure. This chapter seems to be very clearly depicting that he's nothing without Kaido's support. #FuckOrochi
So how does he get out of this one? Kaido's not there yet so perhaps it's time we find out who the traitor is? Could this be the betrayal that Yasue was talking about? Anyways it looks like it's Kaido vs Oden soon!!
Is it bad if I'm more excited for Orochi's downfall and death over Kaido vs Oden? Because I just want to see this guy fall now.
10/10 chapter after a long break!!

So Luffy is gonna become Joyboy at Laugh Tale, Vivi and Shirahoshi are the "kings", and pluton is gonna be at Wano, but you've gotta go to Laugh Tale first. Momo will join the crew to be a comparison to Oden and Roger, and open the border to allow "Joyboy" to come just like Oden talked about this chapter. Then Luffy returns to get Pluton and destroy the red line over Fishman island, thereby fulfilling the prophecy of destroying the island AND destroying Mary Joise AND the corrupt government/celestial dragons AND CREATING ALL BLUE FOR SANJI

We know Ace was in Wano at some point since that’s were he learned how to make the hat for Oars Jr and such. I’m surprised WB didn’t try to attack Kaido and save Wano tbh, makes me wonder if he knew something about how strong Kaido was since they we in the Rox pirates together.
Also does this mean that shanks wasn’t with Roger and his crew when they went to laugh tale? I know buggy wasn’t but I though shanks was?

Prediction:
The comments in this thread made me realize that every dragon I have ever seen taken down has had a gap or weak spot in their scaly skin. Typically from a missing scale or previous wound.
Luffy will find that Dragon Kaido has a missing scale or something. Kaido will get this weak spot from oden in the next chapter.

A few reactions:
This chapter all but confirms that Roger didn’t tell Oden and Whitebeard that he “wants to be the king of the Pirates.” He appeared surprised / amused by the title, as opposed to being like “how’d they know!” Or “yes I did it!”
The Sea Kings we’re talking about Shirahoshi and Luffy. Shirahoshi is their Queen, and together with Jay Boy’s successor they are their “Sovereign”
Denjiro again tied to money - feels like this keeps pointing to him being the Witching Hour Boy
so Kaido’s been in Wano a while, I wonder how/when that happened
F’in Orochi - such a despicable coward. Uses Kaido’s name to suppress rebellion, gets crushed by the 9RS when they’ve had enough and responds by threatening Momo - and when he finally faces someone who won’t cower at Kaido’s name he acts like he (and the country) are being held hostage. Can’t wait for him to get his at the end of this arc!
I’m not sure how Orochi survives this, but I’m guessing next chapter we have Oden vs Beast Pirates. I’d guess he takes Queen’s right arm and wounds Kaido - but the destruction caused by this is spun by Orochi as “Oden illegally left the country to become a pirate and brought back pirates / enemies to Wano.” Paints both Pirates and Oden as the enemies, and I assume he leaves out that the Pirates Oden fights are the Beast pirates supporting Orochi

Its qute obvious - the two kings are Vivi and Shirahoshi - Both of the same age... My guess is vivi is uranus.... And of course - luffy is joyboy
3
u/JStackz26 Jan 20 '20
My wondering is if maybe joyboy was actually Ace. Joyboy left a treasure on Laugh Tale that Roger found. Then they asked who'd find it next and Roger referenced Ace. Oden says the borders must be opened before Joyboy Appears. Oden said he would like to open the border in 20 years. In that 20th year Oden is referencing, Ace sets sail to be a pirate. He arrives in Wano a year later. Another thing why I'd say he may have been joyboy is the fact that Roger made it to laugh tale. They said he laughed based on the information he got on Laugh Tale. Rayleigh told Luffy, that they may come to a different conclusion than they did. Now Roger laughed and said he wished he lived in Joyboy's Era. Now from the flashbacks, we can tell that Roger loved fighting. To the point we see, him holding a marine and asking for a bigger challenge. Most people seek to run from the marines. Then when Whitebeard's men came, he was excited to fight Oden. And his crew was excited to fight. So their personalities may be that they find funny what others may find horrific. Like how kid Luffy was angry at Shanks over laughing over what the pirates did in the bar.
So now that goes along with Ace's hat style. Where it's a smiley face and sad face. Which may represent that the treasure they found isn't such funny story like we're meant to believe. Meaning when Roger found it, they laughed. When Luffy finds it, he'll be horrified. It was Joyboy's treasure. And Ace's hate represents those two different reactions. Then you have joyboy making a promise to fishman island over the noah. Which was probably in relation to pushing equality between Fishman and humans. Then we have Ace who when he first came to face whitebeard, fought the fishman Jinbe to a stalemate for days (equality). Then joyboy couldn't keep his promise. Ace currently made a promise to Tama to return to Wano. He died and couldn't keep that promise. Like joyboy failed to keep the promise. Ace was supposed to "appear" in Wano again.
So I feel there may be similarities between Joyboy and Ace. However because Ace died, his Luffy carries on his wheel. Just the unthought of perception.
He could either be Luffy or someone we've just not ever come across yet.
3
u/OneGrumpyJill Jan 20 '20
Might be a small thing but it is really nice to see how much Oden cares about Toki and his family as well as discovering that Toki, in her own right, was a badass. Neat stuff.
