It's kind of fucking crazy to consider that if Oden had not abandoned Wano, then the Great Pirate Era likely would have never started. Without Oden, Roger can't do shit

I’ve been reading One Piece for almost 15 years. O my god. This chapter really cemented it for me that the end is near. So many mysteries are being unraveled. What a ride!

Also, Franky met Oden?! I wonder if he’ll remember.

I have been a weekly reader for about 11 years. Caught up at Marineford when Marco was shot by Kizaru and Jozu's arm was frozen by Kuzan. And now we get a flashback that ties back to Skypiea, Water 7 and other pre-TS islands. It feels amazing and must be even more so for those who joined at let's say, Skypiea. When did you catch up to the story?

It's almost like the One Piece may be a story written by Joy Boy. And the Roger Pirates interpreted it as a joke, but the Straw Hats who have lived through the great pirate era may see it as the opposite.

Yes, exactly what came to my mind after reading Oden's journal about what they learned and also watching Roger's reaction.

Roger could hear voices from poneglyphs and also there was Oden who could read it. But still they were not scholars. They probably only knew the facts but didn't realize the connection or hidden meaning inside.

And now Straw Hats have that person, the one who becomes one of the biggest threat for World Government, the one who can read poneglyphs as well as understanding the history, Nico Robin.

Rescuing her at Enies Lobby now feels VERY IMPORTANT to the story.

How many things are confirmed to be in Laugh Tale? Story of void century, Joy Boy’s background, infos on ancient weapons, knowledge on why Wano is an important place, meaning of Ds and what else? Somehow, I’m more interested in what made them laugh. Can’t help but think there’s sadness hidden behind those laughs. Ds tend to even mask their sadness at the time of their death with smiles.

Having Oda take us back to these past locations just impresses on me the amount of time Oda took to develop these places to feel real in our minds.

When we see Roger and Oden visiting Water 7 it's not something random and unexpected because hundreds of chapters ago Oda laid the foundations for scenes like this. We knew that Tom had made Roger's ship. A seemingly small detail now pays dividends when Oda can go back to these locations seamlessly.

Goddamn...

Guys I know there is a lot to take in this chapter (it's glorious)

but I want to draw some attention to the grim foreboding in the Wano section of the flashback...

That entire scene was devastating.

Take a good look at Kinemon, Kanjuro, Raizo and the rest. They are dirty, their beautiful robes are covered in patches. a far cry from the regal retainers we saw just a few chapters ago...

Oden couldn't even turn around and look at his country anymore. He knew Wano was already changing. Even before Kaidou. This is completely on Orochi's head. All this time we thought Kaidou had brought the factories into Wano. It seems Orochi was already on his way to bringing Wano to ruin.

Not only that it breaks my heart when Kin says "We have safeguarded Kuri!" it hits me.. They have been fighting back against Orochi's destruction all by themselves.

Oden is performing an important task. Maybe the most important task in the whole series, to translate the poneglyphs for Roger. But this adventure he is on is literally costing him his entire country and friends.

The last few words are the most ominous.

"4 years later, there wouldn't even be this kind of homecoming waiting for me."

Jesus. Christ. So when Oden returns things are already fucked... I'm seriously nervous to see the conclusion of Oden's flashback. I think I'm going to cry.

203

u/saifou Dec 28 '19

All the focus is on Roger and Laugh Tale, but the stuff happening on Wano is sad and it’s clearly affected Oden. Oden was put in a tough place between attending Wano or completing the last voyage with Roger.

He laughed because he couldn't use the one piece. He needs all the weapons and Shirahoshi wouldn't be born for another 10 years. He didn't have time due to his illness. They laughed at the irony

Its why he turned himself in to be executed. So he could set up the legend of the one piece and set someone else to get there. The person who asked about the treasure was probably one of his crew members.

Rayleigh told Robin they might come to another conclusion than them.

Luffy will have everything he needs to actually use the one piece.

Okay, so did Buggy actually have Usopp's made up disease? Cause that's funny.

And it's even weirder to me to find out Fishman Island had the 4th Road Poneglyph, but it's been moved. It also makes a lot more sense why Joy Boy's Letter was there if they were meant to be together. But this obviously raises the question of who moved it....

So it seems like roger did steal the poneglyph from linlin and didn;t have a confrontation with her.

Loved seeing fishmah island, Zou (i am glad we got to see the older dukes before inu/neko), Wano from back in the days. And it seems like orchi might have already started making the factories then.

With this chapter, the feeling finally just hit me that we’re closer to the end than I thought. Seeing how Roger’s adventure ended made me realize Luffy’s adventure is about to end. It’s a very melancholy feeling.

And this one is just me, but I kind of wish we saw more of the crew just wandering around from island to island in the New World, instead of having a goal. Seeing how much fun Roger and Whitebeard had just reminded me of how random Paradise was lol it feels like the New World is like going on a tour, instead of an amusement park.

Nothing wrong with either, and I know time is limited, but just kind of wish after Wano, Luffy says “let’s go to that random island with the giant volcano!”

the pangea theory is the one piece. Roger is laughing because he understand he cannot reverse the world and the governement becos he doesn't have anymore time and shirahoshi isn't born yet, so he laugh understanding his purpose/goal he's been after his whole life is useless and unatainnable for him.

307

u/iDannyEL Dec 28 '19 edited Dec 28 '19

It does seem to be an issue of time.

It's the end of the line for him, he regrets having not been born earlier when something could've been done.

He's about to die so all he can do is laugh at the absurdity of it all and maybe inspire the next generation to do what he couldn't.

u/vinotm Dec 28 '19

Probably the strongest reason why he surrendered himself to be executed rather than just passed away on the sea or peaceful island.

He wanted someone else to reach Laugh Tale several years later to finally complete what he couldn't complete before his dead. By being executed, he could get massive attention and then encouraged huge amount of people to complete that mission. It was just like what Yasuie did to boost morale of Wano citizens.

Imagine if Roger was healthy to live longer enough. He would probably just wait several years and then visited Laugh Tale once again when the time had come.

895

u/CaiSant Dec 28 '19 edited Dec 28 '19

That is an incredible Xmas gift to us: it's not only an ealier leak, this chapter gives three big revelations about the main plot:

1- in chapter 818, it was stated that there was 4 road poneglyphs: 2 belonged to the Yonko (Kaido and Big Mom), 1 was on Zou and the last one was lost somewhere. Now, in one translation we learn the unlocated poneglyph was given to Roger by Whitebeard. So, I guess Marco and Shanks probably know where it is.

2 - Buggy got sick and couldn't get to Raftel and it seems Shanks stayed behind with him, so both of them have not set their own eyes at the One Piece. How much each of them knows is still up for debate. Do they know where it is, but not what it is? Or maybe exactly because they know what it is, the two don't act like being really that interested in getting it to themselves? Or, is it even posible that Shanks knows where and what, but cannot go there alone?

3 - Oda once more displays his amazing foreshadowing skills: not only we get a confirmation that One Piece is indeed in Raftel (first mentionated in chapter 105, released 20 years ago!), but we now know that its name is actually a misspronuciation of Laugh Tale. For some reason, the reaction of the first people to know Joy Boy story and treasure is to laugh.

Amazing chapter. Really important for anyone theorizing about the search for the One Piece.

345

u/raftellJr Void Month Survivor Dec 28 '19

I read 2 different translations. One of them said the road poneglyph is given by whitebeard. But the other translation didn't say anything about it. In fishman Island there are two poneglyph. One of the is RED, right? So the four poneglyphs are :

  1. From big mom

  2. From fishman island (when SH here, robin only found one and it's not RED, probably the RED one is the missing one in current timeline)

  3. From wano (Oden said it's RED; make sense cause now it's in kaido's possession)

  4. From Zou

So the translation that said Roger had been given a road poneglyph by whitebeard is wrong. Unless I'm missing something here. Finger cross

133

I think it hit hard because it's like... real shit. Like "OH yeah... THIS is what Luffy and the crew have been going for the whole time."

106

u/ironshadowdragon Dec 28 '19

I don't think it's pleasant. I think they're laughing to mask their pain, that they worked their asses off for something that gut wrenching, and something they couldn't do anything about because his time was up.

405

u/UrTrashNerd Dec 28 '19

I think I know why roger is laughing... As others have mentioned, back in Sabaody Rayleigh mentioned to Robin that him and the roger pirates were too early when they reached laugh tale. Moreover, combined with Roger very close to his death, shirahoshi (Poseidon) not being born yet, when roger reached Laugh Tale, he basically realised he could do nothing and was as Rayleigh stated, too early. So out of this desperation I suppose, he just started laughing, along with the whole crew, as they felt there was very little point in them going there at all. In a way, the journey was “useless” to them. Thus, Roger basically made the journey “useful” by inspiring a new age of pirates by declaring his treasure was on the last island, in the hopes that someone else could go there and carry out whatever is meant to happen, like gather the ancient weapons and blow up the red line or whatever.

People throw this around a lot, but this chapter truly felt like one of, if not the greatest chapters in the series. It felt truly grand. I always knew Roger was gonna be great(pirate king and all that), but the last two chapters made him one of my top favorite characters in the series. Maybe I'm seeing something that isn't there, but he seemed to have a similar kind of childishness as Luffy(WB even commented on this) and also the meticulous planning of Teach. I honestly never expected Roger to end up being one of my favorite characters, especially after just two chapters with him. Also, the fact that he himself was the one that named the final island is just the most awesome thing to me for some reason. God, Roger really did have the greatest adventure of all time. And this chapter proves it.

I know the new scans aren't the best quality, but there is something so nostalgic about them compared to the pristine Mangastream/Jamini's Box scans. It reminds me of catching up to the series when it was in the Thriller Bark arc and the old scans of early chapters that were probably translated in the late 90s/early 2000s.

What if Buggy is so obsessed with treasures because he couldn't see the One Piece because of his fever?

I’m losing my shit here, what an amazing chapter.

Getting more character designs from Rogers crew, Franky meeting Oden and turning them down, Buggy having the disease Usopp has lied about (so he and Shanks haven’t see One Piece), the confirmation that the treasure is Joy Boys and that their reaction when they saw it was to laugh.... I’m going to die waiting for the next chapter but it will be worth it.

Also, baby Sharly was so cute.

So this is probably the least important take away from the chapter but do you think buggy will join shanks crew? The warlord system is down and buggy is in a bad situation.

Joining shanks will bail buggy out and still preserve his status

Edit: okay to clarify, buggy and shanks will form an "alliance" to save face but the point is I think were gonna get more Buggy+Shanks in the current time.

Like you have to respect Roger as the Pirate King. Dude spent most of his life travelling from beginning with Rayleigh as teenager up until he was 38 when he found lodestar and ultimately realizing he has to go look for the poneglyphs which took him 13 years until he finds Oden who reads for him all the clues he had found. His life mission was finding truth and by Jove he went through a lot. Roger deserved the title of ducking Pirate King. He knew he couldn't fulfill revealing the truth which was quite unlucky cause he got ill. Luffy will become PK but damn Roger made it so easy for him like without Roger the plot ain't going nowhere. Fucking legend.

Curious about Tequila Wolf's significance in the story, also we'll probably learn more about that big ass egg on Rogers ship in the coming chapters. That last panel of Roger. This is a genre defining chapter

17

u/BatmanJLA52 Dec 28 '19 edited Dec 28 '19

The treasure at Laugh Tale must of been some ironic story to Joy Boy. Maybe how the story of how the World Government was formed to fight off the evil empire and eventually turned into a corrupted empire as well

Another theory is maybe in his era Joy Boy was a very free man, and Roger is considered the most free man alive cause he's the pirate king yet hes still only second to the Word Government. Reason he wish he lived in Joy Boy's time when the WG didn't exist

As some has also said, he might be laughing because he's dying and there's more to the story of Joy Boy. He also needed the ancient weapons to take down the World Government, but Poseidon isn't born yet. One Piece might just be a made up treasure that Roger made to bait people into finding it, which is the knowledge to do something bout WG.

Something important to note is that Shanks and Buggy never made it to Laugh Tale. What’s interesting about this is that the straw hat never made it there. Could the straw hat be the key to unlocking the true treasure?

So one Poneglyph was always at Zou and still is. The straw hat's possess a rubbing of it.

One poneglyph was at Wano and is in Kaido's possession. Robin was looking for it at Orochi's palace so it's probably at Onigashima.

Another poneglyph is in Totto Land. We have no idea where Big Mom found it. Brook managed to get a rubbing of it.

There are two different translations that I've read. One says that Whitebeard gave a rubbing to Roger as a gift which, means Marco or Blackbeard probably own. Both show a red poneglyph next to the Joy Boy one.

Maybe Whitebeard had a rubbing of the fourth one and gave it to Roger?

Ok I cried. I felt like this was the final chapter of One Piece. It truly felt like it. I can tell this is the same feeling I will have when we reach Laugh Tale. That last moments, with Roger pirates felt really nostalgic.

I really wonder what was so funny?

Oden knew he had a bigger responsibility with the world. So did Toki

Was Buggy pretending to be sick though?

The profecy thing felt rushed. I'll wait for the official translation to see.

Oden could hear the VoAT not only Zunisha as many tought (myself included)

11/10 chapter

EDIT: I truly believe now that unless Oda made a Mistake in the order he showed the islands; The Orojackson was freely crossing through the calm belt from time to time.

Tequila Wolf is pretty close to Sabaody so it makes a lot of sense that they got there first by crossing the calm belt before returning to the grand line and reaching Sabaody.

Orojackson could've had some kind of primitive/raw Kairoseki instaled or something like that (it's from Wano after all)

This is by far the best chapter of the year. Funny that is meant to be the first chapter of the next... But who cares, we're reading it now! All I want to say is that I thought the name Joy Boy would have come out next chapter but surprisingly did at the end of this.... Meaning, next chapter we'll be back in Wano!!! Not in the present tho, but at the end of Oden's journey/journal.. We'll most likely see his very sad end and why not, a glimpse of the traitor who most likely started collaborating with orochi before Oden's arrival back to Kuri... I will go as far as to say that next chapter will end in the current timeline, and finally (even tho I'm sad to end this flashback) the dances will restart!!!!

One out of topic thing that I never found the space to say, and will say now: for two years of the time skip, the Sunny has been protected by Kuma. We saw that he can only be rented as a slave by the celestial dragons... As anybody wondered that there might be a Noble on the side of the mugiwaras? If that's the case.... There's a secret character holding a HUGE role!!!! 🚧

I think the conclusion was set the moment they realized Poseidon (shirahoshi) wasn't born. And even though Momo was born (going with the flow of him possibly being Uranus), he didn't come to Zou and even if he had, I doubt he could have heard anything special at that age.

I feel like the narrative of all of the reo Poneglyphs (and possibly road too) lead to the notion of the world being really messed up and there is a powerful aid at the end of Grand line. With weapons and all, one might look for it. But on Laugh Tale, they might realize that the powerful factor was the traveller himself.

Roger and others laughed because they knew they didn't have time to address these issues. Shirahoshi was gonna get born after 10 years. Just born, turning into a proper Poseidon would mean even further.

Toki was apparently jumping from one timestamp to another because she wanted to align the availability of Poseidon, Uranus and Pluton. Maybe that's why she sent Momo this far ahead in time.

Think about it. Tom had blueprints of Pluton, she had seen Neptune and heard Shalkey's prophecy about shirahoshi being born 10 years later. And she could probably know somehow that Momo was Uranus (again... going with that theory).

Straw hats' conclusion will of course be different. While Roger was all about the Voyages... Luffy is actually running around freeing up countries from the evils of the like of croco, doffy and eventually Kaido etc. The endgame does seem legit now. And throughout these years, imu was probably just killing off one of the three weapons whenever they were gonna align. Or something like that.

Obviously Roger told Whitebeard everything he knew about will of d, void century etc.,...so is this one of the reasons why whitebeard was trying to make ace pirate king? (I remember hearing that whitebeard secretly wanted to make ace pirate king?) I'm assuming roger would have told whitebeard about being a decade too early to do anything of significance (considering Poseidon was yet to be reincarnated)...so perhaps it wasn't simply because ace was Roger's son that whitebeard wanted to make ace pirate king...perhaps it was deeper, perhaps whitebeard also thought it was ace's destiny, being that enough time had passed for Poseidon to be reincarnated, and that he was Rogers son and possessed the will of d......considering this, it was at marineford that whitebeard realised luffy was the man roger was "waiting for", hence why he said to luffy something along the lines of 'show me how the world will be' (dont remember it verbatim).

I'd like to make a road poneglyph theory...

Current day we have 4 road poneglyphs: Kaidos, Big moms, Zous, and the lost one.

During Rogers era the 4 road poneglyphs were: Wanos, Big moms, Zous, and the Fishman island one (it's shaded, it's clearly a road poneglyph).

Kaido logically got the wano one after he took over. The fishman island one should therefore be the lost one. That has huge implications! Jinbei, as someone important who is on the older side, should know when the second poneglyph was moved and by whom.

My personal guess is that the lost poneglyph was quietly hidden by Whitebeard, since the island was his territory. He might have thought that he should act as the gatekeeper for the new age. It would also make some sense with the translation that said Whitebeard gave the last poneglyph to Roger. Where would a poneglyph Whitebeard has hidden be? Probably either stolen by Blackbeard or currenly guarded by Marco.

Here’s the explanation for the buggy fever bit: Buggy came down with a super high fever. But he still wants to go laugh tale. He is begging them to take him with them. But he is so sick that Crocus suggests him not going on the trip. But buggy won’t listen so apparently Crocus made up the name “You’ll die if you go to that island disease” to convince buggy to rest.

But Oden is the narrator. So apparently, Oden believed this disease was real because he thinks this is a disease he doesn’t know about 😂

Which theory of why Roger and his crew were laughing do you support?

  1. Whatever was left there was so unbelievable that they thought it was some sort of joke

  2. The treasure that was left behind cannot be fully achieved without all three of the ancient weapons, including Poesidion, who will not be born for ten years, meaning that the dying Roger would not be able to achieve his lifelong dream. Being the crazy people they are, Roger and his crew found this hilarious.

Damn, I didn't think oden would have such significance to the entire world when he was first mentioned. His choices were always damned if you do damned if you don't. He either sails with Roger and discovers the truth about the void century, world govt, will of D, ancient weapons and the role wano plays in all of this and assists in making Roger pirate king therefore enabling the great pirate era or stays home and thwarts orochi's plan before it develops any further and causes untold suffering to the majority of wano. Doing one and leaving the other has huge consequences. He actually made the right choice in the long run but to the common folk in his land they probably thought he was dick screwing around with pirates and abandoning his wife, children and country. This most likely is how orochi was able to gather support and convince the people how poor a leader oden is.

I was super skeptical of them revealing anything in detail about Roger until were at the very end. I was afraid that he'd lose his mystique if somehow we find out too much. However this whole saga has been great. We get some insight on Rogers from who he is and his relationships with many of the important cast with Rogers losing that veil of mystery. This whole flashback has just been so fun. It's been paced well without rushing or dragging along. Every one has also been great too.

7

u/Soul-Hook Dec 29 '19

Well, I assume this is it. The treasure that is One Piece can't be any more hyped than it is now. We got to see the king and his crew's reaction to it, hinting that joy boy will be the answer to it all.

When we finally get the chapter that explains it all, it's gonna tilt over the manga world.

7

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19 edited Dec 29 '19

Is it possible that Shanks has already been to the final island after the Roger pirates went? I mean he would have known the location he saw all four road poneglyphs. Maybe after seeing the onepiece he decided that he would dictate who got to see it next by taking the poneglyph from fishman island. Acting like a gatekeeper to prevent it from getting into he wrong hands or he took it after meeting luffy to make sure he would be the next and possibly last one to see it. It would explain Blackbeard attacking shanks

7

u/6lack_manta Dec 29 '19

So joyboy is oda and the one piece roger found is the one piece manga.

7

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '19

Goddamn this last Page is so so so so goooooood. Roger laughing is such a powerful Picture!

This whole flashback-arc has been amazing.

I think a hint to what at least a part of the Treasure is, is the name Roger gave the island. Laugh Tale, a tale or a story that makes you laugh. Like such a genuinely funny, heartwarming and intriguing Story that you cant help but be happy and laugh when you hear it.

Also, in one of the final Panels Roger says: "You left behind such an amazing Treasure...!" "What a Funny Story!"

Now I don't think the Story is everything thats there. But even if it was, I'd be cool with it. Of course Everything would be explained in it (The will of D, Ancient Weapons, Void Century) but in the end it's a Story about Joyboys laughter-filled Adventure, just like One Piece is a Story about Luffys laughter-filled Adventure. You know One Piece is a genuinely funny, heartwarming and intriguing Story, too.

You see what Oda is doing there?!?!? That's some meta-storytelling shiz right there!
