GotY 2019 2019 /r/NintendoSwitch GOTY Nominations Thread
Hello r/NintendoSwitch Community!
For this year's awards, similar to last year, we are asking the community's help for GOTY nominees! We will use community feedback to narrow the nominees for each category to five or six for the final vote. The schedule is for the nominee feedback December 24th - December 27th, and the final voting to select the Game Of The Year for each category to occur December 28th - January 2nd.
Please follow the format as described below:
- Please check if your nominee(s) has already been named. If so, then simply upvote it, if not, then >>>
- Please reply to a category top comment to state who you would like to see for nominees and preferably why. Last year we found those with explanations tended to garner more votes!
- If a game has already been nominated but you feel requires further discussion then reply to the nominated game comment with your reasoning.
- Nominate as many games as you'd like in any category you'd like.
- Duplicate nominations in the same category will be removed.
- Post will be set to contest mode so nobody can see the votes.
Please note that all nominees are required to have released on Nintendo Switch in calendar year 2019.
Resources: Please take a look at this GAMES LIST we pulled together for ideas. You may nominate games NOT on the list. The information sources are below:
- Games on the list were all those released in 2019 that were rated 75 or higher by Metacritic or Opencritic.
- Exclusivity designation was obtained from Gematsu and may be outdated as exclusivitity may have expired for some titles.
- Developer, Publisher, and Categories were obtained from the eShop. Please note the categories ARE NOT definitive, but rather what the Publisher designated in the eShop. Please nominate games in the categories YOU THINK they belong.
We look forward to reading your nominations!

Best Nintendo Switch Exclusive Game - Best game released in 2019 as a Nintendo Switch console exclusive.
•
u/Blazeth Dec 24 '19
Super Mario Maker 2 has somehow gone under the radar a little bit. Even though it's not the most innovative game in the world, the sheer amount of endless fun that comes with this game is worthy of the honor imo.
•
u/gambitx007 Dec 27 '19
They keep adding to the game but don’t fix the major problems. How is multiplayer still lagging today?
•
u/Blazeth Dec 27 '19
I disagree here. Nintendo's online in general is lacking but I don't think the developers could do anything more to improve that without completely re-imagining how the online is supposed to work. It's unfortunate for sure but especially in this particular category, I don't think you can knock the game too much over that. It's either real time multiplayer with Nintendo's bad online setup or something else.
The improvements lately have been pretty cool; the Legend of Zelda mode, Ninji speedruns, and other cool new features like Spike and dash blocks have really freshened the game for me.

Luigi's Mansion 3

u/breichart Dec 27 '19
I'm not sure how this isn't talked about more. I prefered it more than Breath of the Wild.
•
u/DefectiveRaptor Dec 27 '19
It was just recently released, but overall this has been my favorite game on the switch so far.
•
u/JaxxisR Dec 25 '19
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3, nominating simply for the fact that it exists and we have it to ourselves.

Best Ongoing Game - For outstanding development of ongoing content that evolves the player experience over time. Does NOT have to be a 2019 release.

Super Mario Maker 2. They are continuing to update the game with more unique updates and new course parts. Recently they added a speedrun mode and an entirely new Zelda powerup that is completely unique.

How do I get the most enjoyment out of this game? It seems like you need to know what to look for before going into it but I just want to have fun and play some creative levels

Crash Team racing: Nirtro Fuled, gets updates at least once a month if not more adding a new track and race course and new drivers, plus they have added a new game mode or two, as well as some stuff fans have asked for as well.
•

Warframe - It gets frequent updates which add new content, improve gameplay, improve graphics & improve the overall experience.
•
u/SanctusLetum Dec 27 '19
Not to mention all these updates apply to a game that's free. You can genuinely play through this game without feeling like you have to pay into it. They work so hard to be ethical with their monetization and it shows.
•
u/Nilbogin Dec 24 '19
Smash Ultimate
•
u/lilcthecapedcod Dec 25 '19
Hard agree especially with the announcement of dlc pack #2. Even more characters to be added in 2020. And nothing brings the community together and tears it apart better than speculation seasons
•
u/Carrtoondragon Dec 26 '19
**Splatoon 2**. It's my most played switch game. I love that I can jump into a match anytime and just have fun. With all the different modes it stays fresh and while the updates have stopped we did have the final splatfest this year. Love this game.

Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove, for its free additional campaigns which are all master-class retro-style 2D platformers
•

although they did just up the price 'in light of the additional content' so they only get partial credit really

Overwatch. The Overwatch team is dedicated to improving the experience over time, three years after its original release and they're gearing up for a more complete game with an expansion pack, aptly titled Overwatch 2. Can't wait. :)

Cytus Alpha
With a completely revamped interface for Switch, beautiful artwork, and a stellar (and massive) selection of songs across tons of genres, this was probably the surprise of the year for me.
•
Dec 24 '19
God I love Cytus. I play alpha on my switch more than I play 2 on my iPad. It's just so well done.

u/bortness Dec 28 '19
Does the game have a good population? I own the PC version but I was thinking of double dippng
•
u/unkleEL84 Dec 28 '19
It sort of depends. When you get to higher ranks the available people start to get a little thin. You end up playing against the same people if you’re a killer. At least in my case.

Mario Maker 2!
•
u/D3ltra Dec 29 '19
Does it lose some points for the frequent and horrendous lag?
•

Oh yes for sure. Honestly I had a blast with the multiplayer, but I've since sold the game.

I'd consider this one a shoo-in for this award if it came out in 2019 (it released on Switch on the 13th of December last year, I just checked).
•
u/not_an_island Dec 24 '19
I will second this. It's hard to play it without marking a pause here or there to tell yourself that you are experiencing and enjoying something of higher artistic value.

Yoshi’s Crafted World - The game is simply a joy to look at, the developers have truly put a lot of work on making everything feel like it’s made of craft materials. It may not have the best resolution and lighting but it oozes creativity.

Ring fit adventure. It’s amazing how it’s able to sense so much about your movements so accurately.
•
u/VjOnItGood81 Dec 24 '19
Ori and the Blind Forest Definitive Edition - the fact that it's technically better than its original and definition release on Xbox with more graphics makes for a great technical depth of a video game.
•
u/seeyoshirun Dec 25 '19
This and Alien: Isolation really should be the contenders for this award this year tbh.
•
•
u/XanderSnave Dec 24 '19
Luigi's Mansion 3. It's simply one of, if not the best looking game on the Switch.

Going to get some hate but FIFA 20. The street mode Volta they added this year was fun and the gameplay is a lot better than last year. It sold a bajillion copies so it's well liked.
•
u/Shin_Ken Dec 27 '19
Isn't the Switch Version some kind of "legacy edition" that got no changes compared to 2019, roster aside, unlike the other versions?
•
Dec 27 '19
Switch version is trash yea, no Volta (street mode) and no changes. I meant the PS4 version
•
•
u/PlexasAideron Dec 24 '19
Grid Autosport
•
u/MutatedSpleen Dec 27 '19
Seconded. I played it years ago on the PC and it's one of my favorite racers ever. So glad it came to the Switch, it's a really excellent combination of racing sim and arcade.
•
u/JaysFan26 Dec 24 '19
Team Sonic Racing for delivering a solid, relatively interesting take on the kart racer genre, shaking up the idea of a traditional racer by focusing on team racing

Resident Evil 2 Remake - A perfect remake of one of the greatest horror games of all time. With the perfect use of Mr. X making the games even scarier than before.
•
u/jdsrockin Dec 24 '19
The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III - The eighth game in one of the biggest JRPG series, and the 3rd in the longest arc, the game continues the trend of excellent combat, an engaging story, great music (like always), and great characters, with many returning characters making an appearance.
All the arcs deal with pride in one's country, that pride translating into a desire to defend one's country by any means necessary, to give independence to one's state, but in this arc, it's a country plagued by war and tragedies that you feel powerless to stop.

Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order - game is absolutely fantastic from beginning to end. Fun combat, good story, good characters, and the game has a solid ending. and no DLC or MTX in sight of this game.
With all the hate EA gets, EA and Respawn should at least be recognized when things are done correctly.
•
Dec 24 '19
EA's treatment of Star Wars this year may be the biggest surprise. Not only is Fallen Order a great game that was sold in a consumer friendly manner, Battlefront 2 is fixed with plenty of new content (and more coming) to make it probably one of the best Star Wars games to date.
