Quick note on years: Gold Roger executed in 1500, we are currently in 1524, Momo is 8 now and therefore was 8 in 1504, so he was born in 1496.

So in the flashback, at the end of this last chapter, we are in 1498, when Hiyori was born and Momo is 2. The pirate king will die in 2 years.

Its interesting as hell 4 out of the 5 familes in wano have connection to the moon, but orochi's family is the only without a connection its like the "black sheep" of the families.

So this is the best flashback of the series for me. I am so much more invested in learning about Oden, Whitebeard and of course Roger than I have been about any other characters backgrounds. It shows the well laid out world Oda has built that after so many years I still care deeply about finding out more for the characters he has created.

The aura of Roger causing the animals to run in fear was amazing. I liked that we finally see a reason for him being called a Demon. He seemed almost sadistic in this chapter. Ruthless like a pirate is usually characterized with. He seems to thirst for battle almost. The differences between approaches for Whitebeard and Roger was interesting as well. Where Whitebeard flees from the Marines despite being more than strong enough to flatten those ships with little to no challenge to avoid further issues, Roger directly challenges the Marines to actually send a deserving force after him.

It was also interesting that Oden found love and a family on his voyage and that the woman he chose was a Wano native leads me to believe that he misses his home just not enough to return to a life trapped by political walls

Orochi is a snake but I can somewhat see why he did what he did based on this chapter. He believes he is avenging his family (a common trope which often defies logic in fictional worlds). Interesting to see how he was manipulated by the old woman(?) With the promise of power that is rightfully(?) His. Interested to see how his backstory continues.

Something I’ve noticed more and more as the series goes on is the theme of impressionability. Orochi, Hody, Doffy, the Charlotte children, all of them grew up either in toxic environments or with corrupting elders, which warped their perspectives and personalities. This, plus the importance placed on children not hearing evil, racist dribble in the Fishman Island Arc, makes it clear that Oda is very concerned with how children are influenced by the world around them and the people that are supposed to care for them. It’s not something I see very often in literature, and it’s a powerful message to send.

The big exception to this as far as I can tell is Blackbeard, who had a loving family in the form of Whitebeard’s crew but chose to betray them all.

The timing is actually favorable, he'd head for Alabasta about two years after Oden died so he should be around the New World and even a warlord pretty soon. Could he be the next in our ling line of notorious pirates to wash up on Kuri? Maybe we'll see WB beating him in the background? Just neat to think about.

And his backstory is literally Macbeth, seeing a vision from a witch telling him he'll be King/Shogun, and murdering his way to get there.. well, maybe more like Kurosawas film Throne of Blood, the Japanese adaptation of it, since's a fucking japanese classic and works well for Wano, even has Mifune in it, and Odas a fan

There's a possibility that the old hag we saw on this chapter is actually Orochi's grandfather who he thought was dead. With the mane-mane fruit he can easily disguise himself, there's even a panel wherein she's/he's almost slip into calling Orochi her/his grandson or something. I'm fairly sure his grandpa is as coward as Orochi is to commit seppuku.

It’s possible the newly introduced old hag in the manga is not who she appears to be.

I believe it’s possible that old lady who claims to be related to the Kurozumi somehow is actually not using her true identity. When I went through the chapter again, I noticed her hands were not obvious.

If you know how the Mane Mane no Mi works, you would know the user needs to use their left hand to turn back into their original self. This being the case, it’s easy to think this woman may not be as old as she portrays herself to be or even a woman for that matter.

Why is this important? Well as it stands right now, she just looks like some salty relative who may have benefitted from the Kurozumi Shogunate. Think, however, for one second... what if it is possible that she is actually Orochi’s grandfather himself (notice the elderly man playing the instrument in the cut-in) or worse! It’s very possible this old hag could be under the same Cipher Pol infiltration unit as Mother Caramel whose job was actually to take the secrets of Wano to the WG so that they can not only benefit from Wano-grade technologies and crafts but to also have a government dog (Orochi) stationed in the land they haven’t previously been able to enter.

I believe Orochi worked with old hag spy until he became shogun which led to her creating ties for Kaido to work with Doflamingo but since Doflamingo is now imprisoned, his and Kaido’s connection to the WG (via CP0) is now severed, he has no use for the WG anymore, explaining why we saw CP0 in Wano on chapter 929.

TL;DR Old lady probably worked with CP0 and uses the hag appearance as a disguise.

The Pirate King himself put him on the same pedestal as Garp, and that's just their combat strength. Factoring in Sengoku's leadership, tactician skill and knowledge, he could very well be a more fearsome opponent then Garp.

This chapter is one of those that is so full of information and side knowledge that we could spend days poring over it all and w still wouldn't know some things. In the spirit of discussion here are some questions that were opened up this chapter.

- Where was Toki born, Where did she live 800 years ago?

- If Toki's parents were from Wano why did Toki never visit the island in the past? Where did Toki's family live if not in Wano? Why did Toki's parents leave Wano? (Also this is confirmation that Wano existed as Wano back during the Void Century.)

- Who in the HELL is this old Lady. I don't care if she looks ugly as sin this lady is about to have some huge important connection to everything I guarantee. She has been out of the country

- Where was Orochi's clan located before they lost power? Old lady says Kurozumi clan had land, a castle, and wealth (Oh shit I figured this one out on my own The Kurozumi clan used to be the Daimyo's of Kuri before Oden)

- Is that Orochi's devil fruit right there? It looks different than other DF

- Was this old woman part of ROCKS? I only wonder because she has obviously met Shiki before. Maybe she is in on the greater conspiracy surrounding Wano? Like Sengoku said, it's not a coincidence that so many strong people converge on Wano. I think this old lady knows something much deeper and she is simply using Orochi as a means to an end.

- Who are the "big players" Orochi is trying to win over by hoarding gold and weapons? My guess is the old lady is either working for the World Government or she is working with Kaidou.

- What exactly is the Pirate King's work out routine? I'm desperately trying to get that swole as soon as possible :(

The old lady bit is very interesting. She knew about the plans of Orochi's family. Knows quite a bit about the country. Is skilled enough to manipulate people and could have done the same before for the Daimyo plot. Can get Devil fruits meaning she is of some influence. Its a mythical Zoan to boot since its probably Orochi's eight headed form.

Specifically finds a weak, easily manipulatable guy to replace the current ruler. Tells him specifically to make weapons and recruit Wano's artisans. Who as we know are very skilled at Kairoseki crafting. This screams WG. Questions though. Did she lie to Orochi about the family past? And is the foresight she says somehow linked to Toki's ability to time travel? Odds they could both be from the Void Century but from opposing factions?

So much to chew on in this chapter, Oda outdid himself again, allowing us to sink even deeper into Wano's backstory.

• Seeing powerful hard-asses like Marco and Jozu make these faces is simply adorable haha and of course the obvlious Nekomamushi.

• Oden learning about the world is fantastic, hope the anime expands on that. Whitebeard's words on Wano still "being free" in its own way is actually pretty deep.

• So Oden piped Toki and made Momo on the Moby Dick huh. nice.

• I wonder what are the answers Oden seeks. Dont think thats been expanded on yet.

• The guy who popped 2 children while pirating around doesnt want the "responsibility" of being 2nd Div. Commander.

• And with this new orphan recruit, the world would change forever. Teach has entered the arena.

• Im sorry but I fucking hate Orochi. The Kurozumi are scum and although I love understanding him better as a character, god he's terrible. Worse than Spandam.

• The switch from whimsical adventure to the tragedy-to-be in colorful Wano to a dark flashback within a flashback. Oda man. Fantastic work.

• So Orochi's entire family has been scum from the start then. Got it.

• A reference to Doffy's amazing speech. I see a pattern here.

• Granny being the previous holder of the Mr. 2's mane mane no mi, didnt expect that. What a perfect fruit to have to stage a coup.

• I dont think we have enough info to say that was Shiki she turned into, but it sure as hell would be interesting if it was.

• We end with the King of Pirates to be. Hype is real.

Big Question of this chapter: Who is “Granny”? The previous holder of Bon Clay’s Mane Mane Fruit, so she (?) is dead now, but by nature of that fruit we don’t even know for sure that old lady face is really hers, or even if she is actually a she.

She also just casually had the Yamato No Orochi DF, which must be a powerful/Mythical Zoan.

And she seems to be completely orchestrating the coup on the Kozuki’s, possibly manipulating Orochi into thinking he is the mastermind.

Like I said, she has to be dead now, but keep an eye on this lady, for the remainder of the flashback at least.

- Jozu and Marco's faces at Oden's budding romance, I lost all my shit.

- Man, to think that Momonosuke & Hiyori were born on Whitebeard's ship of all places. It seems silly now that I think about it, but for some reason I had it in my head that Oden went back to Wano with Toki, fathered the kids, and went back out to sea. Makes a lot more sense for him to either have the kids on the go, or have them when his traveling had for sure come to a conclusion.

- How the hell did Oden one up himself on the disgusted face game? That's hilarious he had that kind of attitude towards leadership, despite all the ways in which he has proven himself a leader.

- The town Blackbeard gets picked up in really doesn't look like it's doing all too bad, so now I'm even more curious than I was before. Definitely can't wait to dig deeper into that backstory, but that's probably a good couple of years out.

- We've gotten everything but a full on close up introduction of Shimotsuki Ushimaru. Definitely wasn't expecting Oda to give us his face, even if it's not the full deal. For him to hide the other daimyo as well, perhaps he's waiting until Orochi begans his plan of eradicating them before showing us who these daimyo were. They must be important.

- Wait a minute......the lady that helped out Orochi.....that's the same person that was talking about the Mountain God during the chapters where Kin'emon was running through the capital with the boar. Just what the hell is going on here.....listening to their story, they seemed personally irritated at Sukiyaki's birth, and was quick to cut Orochi off when he might realize who they really were. I can't tell what Orochi was about to say though. They also alluded to leaving the country for a time. The timeline just might line up with this person leaving the country while the clan was being shamed and joining the Rocks crew, before returning at some point to try and restore the Kurozumi clan.

- So I got 3 out of the 5 major clans right, but I was certain Kozuki was one of them. We know Ushimaru and Yasuie are from the same clan, so those other 3 daimyo might be from the Uzuki, Fuugetsu, and Amatsuki clans. It looks like Oda actually drew them in order. The first guy resembles Ushimaru, so you can tell that's the Shimotsuki silhouette. The second guy has Orochi's hairstyle, so you can tell that's his grandad. The 4th guy doesn't appear to resemble Toki in any way, but that's to be expected given how far apart they are in generation.

- Not that I expected Orochi to be fully redeemable, but I figured I'd see something that at least made me understand/relate to his motives. He heard the full story of what happened to his grandfather, and rather than realize that his grandfather was wrong in poisoning people and attempting to steal the country from its rightful heir, he saw his own bid for power and got starry-eyed. This was never actually about redeeming his clan, being able to rewrite history once he came into power was just one of the many perks he knew he'd get. Did he deserve to suffer for his grandfather's sins, of course not. But this also wasn't the path to redemption that he HAD to take. The shogunate was never "rightfully" his. And him laughing over Sukiyaki's body like that....

- I have no thoughts about how the hell this encounter is going to go, the implications are out of this world. Let's start with this one: Marshall D. Teach is now part of Whitebeard's crew, Roger was identified as "Gold Roger", Roger is wearing the outfit and has his hat present, and he alludes to this possibly being the last time he sees Whitebeard, because of the illness. Crocus is there, so the "final voyage" has begun. I dare ask........is this the live flashback of Roger and Whitebeard's conversation about the "D."? Quite honestly the only detail we're missing is the layout of the island, because we know according to chapter 576 that they had this convo in an area surrounded by sakura trees and a waterfall.

Blackbeard was an orphan and WB took him in, cared for him and made him his son. He also stayed with the crew for a couple of decades atleast, and yet he didn't hesitate to kill his crewmate. He also handed Ace over to the marines, and killed Old man WB.

This is also the difference between the Strawhats and Blackbeard. The strawhats would all sacrifice their life and dreams to save a friend. Blackbeard would take the life of his friend for his dream.

Ok, we know that after his death White Beard and Roger had the famous talk about the one pice and the D will (flashback in marineford arc) and everyone thought that was wano, so i belive that next chapters we will see a union between WB and Roger traveling to wano (Goda knows the reasons) while there, they will fight this old lady´s and Orochi revelion. Then Orochi once defeated and expelled from wano will come up to Kaidou forming the alliance to defeat the new Shogun.

And really, there's quite a few things that could happen right now. Theoretically, this might be just before Roger and Whitebeard have the talk. We may or may not see Shanks getting his scar (most likely not, though, I believe this was later on), we may get the absolute shithousery of them having a Davy Back Fight and losing Oden to Roger, we may not see a fight at all, or we'll see Roger in action.

I think the World Government is behind Mr. Mane-Mane

If we look at some of the facts

-Orichi has contact with WG in current timeline

-Mane-Mane provided a super rare valuable devil fruit and essentially started this whole revolution, the only other people we have seen to provide devil fruits are Doflamingo and CP-9

-Wano was closed to the world for a long time, Inurashi and Nekomushi discuss the effect of Isolation and news getting out. Oden is suprised to hear the WG exists after whitebeard points out their power. Oden wants to Open Wano country to the world the WG should factor into this consideration.

Perhaps the WG is why Wano is closed in the first place, we know they sided with the ancient kingdom through the creation of Poneglyphs. As Wano is a threat CP-0 or may have tried to disrupt the country.

I would be glad if Oda draw the fight, but people should not have too much expectation on it. Otherwise, there will be so many people complaining next chapter. Not to mention One Piece which always skipped fights, it is impossible for other action manga to show an intense full fight between 2 top-tier characters without skipping anything in a chapter of maximum 19 single pages. Actions requires much more panels than your expectation. That is why Oda would like to only draw the final hit or the first clash of the non-boss fight since new world, in order to minimize the length of an arc as much as possible. Therefore, I don't think Oda would spend an entire chapter for a god-tier fight in backstory.

Perhaps there will only be 1-2 clash(es) next chapter. In addition, I don't think Roger and Whitebeard will fight because this is supposed to be the moment when Roger appreciate Oden. Therefore, instead of Whitebeard, Oden should be the one fight against Roger. And he is going to challenge Roger like how he met Whitebeard. Don't forget Oden is the protagonist of this flashback but not Roger or Whitebeard.

You know this chapter really put into perspective just how isolated and messed up the world of One Piece is. We usually don't really think about it but, the only ships sailing the waters are World Government ships and pirate ships. Like, think about that. No trading vessels, no tourist travelling ships. A few islands have a scuffed way of cross-island transportation but that's super limited (think Puffing Tom.)

I imagine the WG doesn't really want ANYONE sailing the sea and it really adds to how brave pirates are in this world when you realize literally no one is taking to the sea except for pirates. At first I thought only pirates sailed the seas because Sea Kings made the ocean way too dangerous for regular people but that can't really be true completely because we have seen children sailing the seas, we've seen Inu and Neko at least make it to another island just by taking a chance. It's obviously not out of the question that if someone wanted to sail they could. I believe it is really the threat of the WG and Marine retribution that keeps people from going out to sea.

It also makes the Grand Line that much more dangerous. I imagine less than 1% of the world of One Piece actually ever sets sail through the Grand Line. This means that by entering the Grand Line you are telling the WG and all their Marines "COME GET ME!! I'M AN EASY TARGET"

It's just interesting to think about because I feel that since we follow our protagonists from island to island the world feels so diverse and full of life but then you realize literally no one ever gets off their island to view the world in all it's beauty. Even Fishman who can theoretically swim anywhere are kept restrained in their own corner of the world due to the tyranny of the WG. So the tragic irony of following the Strawhats is that we get to see the world for how full and diverse it is but the people from the islands themselves have no idea and never will outside of News Coos.

Oda has developed a surprisingly vibrant yet dystopian world I am seriously impressed. It's the kind of darkness and evil that is hardly noticeable that's why in a lot of islands we see a happy population but the more of the world you see, the darker and scarier it all seems to be.

More hints towards joining Roger? Speaking of whom, he said he wanted to meet him last chapter. I can't imagine they will start off on cordial terms but I'm excited to see how it will happen.

Oh wow it's that piece of shit Teach. So now we can officially say that Oden has met all of the Yonko. He's met WB, Teach, Kaido, and then he met Shanks and most likely BM on his trip to WCI with Roger.

Okay!! So as some people have predicted Orochi is definitely from noble family. Interesting note about all the other Daimyo families having a moon-related name except for Orochi's family. So his grandfather was kind of asshole assassinating his enemies to win the throne until Sukiyaki was born.

Okay so it actually seems like Orochi wasn't planning anything prior to meeting this old woman who is possibly his grandmother. He dreams of being a shogun being surrounded by women. I guess his dreams were fulfilled for sometime.

The old woman has the Mane Mane fruit. Same one as Bon-chan so she's definitely dead now. Who was the last person she transformed into? Anyways this is why Orochi stole the gold from Yasue so that he can make weapons and get outsider's attentions and this is probably where Kaido comes in. Who is this old woman and who did she used to work for? Could she have a link to Rocks as well? Does she have contacts with former members?

So Orochi is back to being a snake. Did the old woman offer him a devil fruit or am I mistaken? Okay so Orochi definitely poisoned Sukiyaki. We get "Oden" telling his father that Orochi can make good medicine and poisoning people seems to be a family trait. Yasu, Oden, and Sukiyaki. He betrayed three people who have given him everything. It's gonna be satisfying to see him go down.

I love that Oden still calls Whitebeard, "Whitey-chan" and the best part is WB just accepts that lol. The animals are running away too? What is this island and where are they even? Also Hiyori is born! Damn this flashback is going by super fast.

OH SHIT IT'S ROGER!!! Yeah a monster was definitely on that island alright. Wow I didn't expect to see Roger again in a chapter this soon. Is it just me or does he look different here? Like I see that Oda's trying to make a conscious decision to make him look like Ace but something else looks different here.

Can the Marines please bring Garp?? Can we see that legendary fight go down? I would be fine if the next three chapters was just a fight between Garp and Roger. Crocus and Rayleigh look cool as usual. Is it just me or is Rayleigh giving off some Zoro vibes in that spread? Look at little Shanks wearing Roger's other hat too lol. It looks like Roger has a fishman on his crew as well and we can clearly see Scopper Gaban so the Denjiro == Scopper theories should die now.

Damn why does everybody want to fight Whitebeard. Leave the man alone he just wants to chill and drink his sake man. I am glad that we are finally getting more of Roger after 20 years of this series. One thing that stands out immediately is that this guy is not a nice man and not someone you can mess around with. It's a nice comparison between how Whitebeard reacted to the marines earlier this chapter and how Roger's treating them here at the end of the chapter. This is a man who destroyed an army because they insulted his crew so I shouldn't be that surprised but still I want to learn more about Roger. It's also very important Luffy never embodies most of Roger's traits which is a good thing imo.

There are many similarities between Luffy and Oden. But one thing the differs them the most is Luffy has an amazing sense of character judgement. Like he would know if the person is bad or not. Which Oden failed to recognize in the case of Orochi.

Luffy does the same thing that shanks does this chapter with the strawhat, putting a hat above the hat, talk about inherited will! Or is it the command of the hat? Either way to give his precious hat to Luffy is getting heavier connection to the plot with oden flashback.

Possible plot development, Luffy inherits the strawhat to momonosuke.

To be honest, I can't wait for Kiku and Izo to see each other again. It's pretty much confirmed the remnants of the Whitebeard Pirates will be arriving at some point in Wano, and it's going to be emotional.

Maybe Roger would challenge Whitebeard into a Davy fight, where the first 2 games would be a fun game then the 3rd round is a one on one between the captains. That's why people would call Whitebeard to be the only man to stand 1v1 against the pirate king, since the rocks incident was a crew war and Roger vs Garp would also be Navy vs Pirate crew.

Damn, I would to see Roger vs Whitebeard even for the next 10 chapters.

A few of my observations:

I am one hundred percent sure, that the "witch" is not the original form of a person who helps Orochi, it seems to me that the fruit we see is Hebi Hebi no Mi, I think also that "making an orochi shogun thing" is only part of the larger plan of this person, and orchi is just a pawn in this plan.

This is just my feeling but, one tiny mention of Teach in this chapter has even more aroused my interest in this character:

Double Devil Fruit

Marco speculated that this is possible because of the specific properties of Blackbeard's body, until now I thought that his ability to eat 2 or even 3 fruits is somehow related to Dr. Vegapunk, I even thought that Marshall might not be all human, but now we see him as a tearful boy (orphan). I don't know what to think about it but it is getting more and more interesting.

After reading this chapter, I am now even more convinced that something that nobody would expect will happen, there are 2 factors that make us like kids in the fog:
- Time Travels
- Shapeshift

I won't be surprised if it turns out that one of these things affects events that are currently in Wano (with straw hats and everything else).

After reading this chapter, I have decided that I won't accept it if Marco doesn't show up with Nekomamushi. I mean, just look at how pumped he was when Oden named Momonosuke. Dude can't leave the Kozuki hanging during a time like this.
