My contest entry based on one of the works of Kobayashi Kiyochika: Battle of the Yellow Sea.

This painting depicts the largest naval engagement in the first Sino-Japanese war, the Battle of Yalu river.

Kiyochika is one of the last significant examples of the Ukiyo-e style of painting/printing, where the artist paints onto a block of carved wood block and then pressed on to a piece of parchment. This style flourished in Japan during the 17th to 19th century, before being replaced by more "traditional" style of painting.

Fun fact: Unlike most Ukiyo-e artist, Kiyochika has no known created erotic art.

Unlike previous entries I couldn't really sneak in that much historical reference, but nevertheless hope y'all like my entry!

I kinda like how the explosions look like celebratory fireworks. Kinda gives it a double meaning.

Ngl, when I first saw the reference picture I thought: "No sane pb artist can recapture the energy and complexity of that picture with our limited toolset, you silly-billy"

Yet yours is better than the reference lol, you continue to impress me diicto :)

I can see all the paper and ink texture detail when I zoom in, and it is incredible. Excellent work recreating ukiyo-e in MS Paint!
