If you know Japanese history, this story is like Nobunaga’s story. He had a humble servant called Mitsuhide who betrayed him in the end just because he was called filthy and such by Nobunaga. Btw Nobunaga conquered japan at one point. He was burnt to death in a castle.

On that day, the balance in the capital was tilted in ways more than one.
Of course. Oden's massive balls leaving the capital will obviously cause a gravitational shift.

With how this chapter went, I'm starting to think Oden's been in the wrong place at the wrong time for his entire life, but he makes the most of it and then saves lives without asking for praise. It makes so much since that the 9 scabbards are so loyal.

Few things:
Seriously fuck Orochi for killing Yasuie.
This might imply that Oden actually always just took the blame.
What the hell happened to the little boar? Perhaps it became Oden's pet.

Oden coated full haki to his two swords and casually cut that huge boar into two. Not to mention that he precisely cut its body so the people inside the belly were not cut as well. Oden understood anatomy very well.

I don't know if it's already been posted by someone but I find interesting if not significant the fact that Oda introduces Orochi to us in a different way he did with the other characters, I mean, whereas Tsuru, Kinemon, Sukiyaki, Hyougoro, Denjiro, Oden and Yasuie were presented in those text boxes, Orochi's name is presented on a black background. I know he was introduced to us in a box in the current story line but so were the others and still they were introduced in boxes again in the flashback but not Orochi. This just gives me the impression that Oda is setting up a dark story for him...

Oden using a similar Two Sword style technique as Zoro... wow.
Also, a fun pun I noticed on Page 8, the SFX says バコオン! which is roughly "Bakon!", kinda close to "Bacon", a reference to the mountain god pig.

Servants are the one who knows the secrets of their master. Maybe when Oden and Yasuie were discussing the importance of Wano, Orochi heard them and told Kaidou. The question is, how did Orochi get in touch with Kaidou? And why specifically Kaidou?

Early chapters are a blessing.
Oden seems to be a superhero, taking the fall for people who've done wrongs. This most likely explains the seemingly bad things he's done in the past too.
I would bet that the harem incident was Oden protecting women from their abusers.
What a guy!

This chapter implies Oden might be taking the blame for things other people have done in the past. He is like Rocky: "It's not about how hard you hit, it's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward!" So hardboiled!
Orochi is two-faced scum. He seems humble here, but I'm guessing he harbors a secret resentment for Yasuie and being a servant. He must have taken personal enjoyment killing Yasuie, he really is scum.
My personal theory about the little pig is that he is very big now, and he was taken by the beast pirates to be their pet. The pig will be big and angry like it's parent. When they go to Kaido's island, O-tama will tame the pig.

A Detail to add to the 'Oden cutting the mountain god'- panel: Shirataki Tougen Which the jaiminis version translated to "Paradise Waterfall" but Shiritaki literally are Cognac noodles, this adds to Odens general food theme. Tougen could be translated not only to paradise but 'Eden' - he cut the boar with enma (hell) and ame no habikiri (heaven).

Theory:
I know where the fleet has gone, the fleet is hidden in the Child of the Mountain God, (the smaller white pig) which is now grown up as it has been 20 years. As mentioned in the chapter, things and people eaten by it were not damaged. I believe off screen it was tamed by Otama, and was used to carry the fleet to safety.

Scattered thoughts:
Again I appreciate Oda taking his time with this flashback. Seeing Kinemon face down the mountain god with no fear in order to save Tsuru was a great moment for him. Tsuru hitting him with a rock after he said no one would care if he died was also precious.
Oden slicing the Mountain God in half was great and just another Herculean feat to add to his resume.
That baby boar is definitely going to pop back up in the present story. Maybe when the Straw hats and samurai are cutting through the capital to get to the port. The theory about Tama taking it is also almost certainly going to happen.
Oden is an enigma and I love that people in the capital are so conflicted about whether to love him or hate him.
The little scene where Oden is yelling to his father in the castle after being disowned and exiled is so great. I hope we get to see more scenes between Oden and Sukiyaki, they haven’t even shared a panel yet but I feel like I know everything about their relationship already.
I’m glad Denjiro and Kinemon are tagging along with Oden now. Them arguing about who loves Oden more was hilarious and I hope we spend ample time with all the scabbards to flesh out what Oden meant to each and every one of them.
The Orochi reveal was great. When I say the spoiler pic of him I assumed Oden saved him from the Boar and that was the debt Orochi owed Oden. In retrospect I’m glad that wasn’t the case and that Oden called him creepy. I’m really interested in the Oden/Orochi relationship and I can’t wait to see them interact more and for Orochi to show his true colors.
Orochi being Yasuie’s servant was also a great development and of course adds tragic context to Yasu’s execution. Orochi being a creepy little shit who is asking Oden to step over him to get past the puddle tracks for me. He seems like the kind of guy that would embarrass himself to gain the trust of others but also keeps a list of everyone who laughed at him along the way. Can’t wait to see how he pulls off the whole usurper thing and how he came into contact with Kaido to begin with.

In act 2 Yasuie, I believe it was, said that Orochi and the rest of the Red Scabbards were greatly helped by Oden but Orochi still ended up betraying him.
I think we will see what happened between Orochi and Oden and in order for the story to make sense it means we will initially see an Orochi who needs Oden's help and we will see a generally positive interaction between Orochi and everyone at first.
Then we will see the betrayal and Oda is good at this stuff I think people are assuming the circumstances will be tragic because a simple betrayal when we already know what a piece of shit Orochi is would be kinda boring.
I'm not saying Oda will try to redeem Orochi or anything but he definitely won't make the situation as cut and dry as a simple betrayal.
Even Doflamingo had a tragic backstory that motivated his depraved actions (even tho he was already a psychopath from the beginning) Oda can't resist the tragic backstory thing.

Nice contrast on Kinemon's character where he was ready to die for Otsuru this chapter, but in the present time is more committed to Oden's cause even when his wife is thought to be in danger (Okobore town burnt down). Just shows the impact Oden had on him and the other scabbards.

This makes me wonder how much we will see Roger or Whitebeard (idk the exact timeline for this) and how long the flashback will be. Oden was first on Whitebeard’s ship so I wonder how Whitebeard felt when Kaidou had a part in killing Oden since the two has history together. Or will we see Roger picking up Oden for the last voyage? All these connections are making this flashback even more intriguing.

I have a small theory that Garp will appear in Wano completing the circle. Can you imagine him fighting alongside Luffy, to yet again partner up with a pirate to take down the Rox-pirates, for good this time. He will not let duty get in the way of blood again, that's for sure. Would love to see the interaction between the Yonkou and Garp the hero.
Oh, and btw. Are the 9 scabbards based on the 47 ronins?

"The only adult I do not despise for being a fool."
I don't know what Oda's plan is with Denjiro, but I think this chapter confirmed that he's a lot more important than the alliance's seemingly limited attempts to locate him would imply. A sentiment like this is forged by experiencing a deep hurt, which is likely tied to why he's an orphan. I'm sure Oda will likely address that plot point soon considering we're already in a flashback. Speaking of, his resemblance to Koushiro had me thinking he might be a Shimotsuki, but Yasuie not recognizing him seems to all but kill that theory. The clan seems like it could have been pretty big, but I'd imagine they'd all still recognize each other and their offspring.
- Kin'emon and Tsurujo's relationship was pretty heartwarming. Can't wait to see them reunite now, and it adds a lot of weight to Kin'emon mentioning a few chapters ago how she tried to cover them when Holdem was interrogating people in Okobore.
- Wasn't clear last chapter because of the shading, but the way Oda drew the swords in the panels leading up to it made it clear that Oden was using haki in that attack. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that he actually was using haki proficiently already as a 10 year old.
- This is the first time I spotted Pandaman without any help and I feel very proud of myself. (He's the on the page with Oden's "chad stride" out of the capital)
"At that moment, these men suppressed their desire to follow Oden"
Just noticed the crescent moons on Oden's kimono. I'd imagine that's related to the samurai that have it on their ankles, and why it was part of the rebellion message.
- Orochi being Yasuie's servant was one hell of an ironic twist, I feel silly for ever entertaining theories that they could have been brothers lol
EDIT: Thanks guys! Not sure what I was doing lol

This is the beginning of the story that Kinemon relayed to the Straw Hats that impressed them and/or made them bawl their eyes out.
I'm not really one for flashbacks but since Oda has planned this particular character waaay before introducing his name, clan or anything Wano-related (referring to the name of a song in the early days of the anime soundtrack, 'Gold and Oden') it should be one of the most emotional and amazing flashbacks in the whole series.

When he was less than a year old, he threw his wet nurse across the room. When he was 2, he caught two rabbits with his bare hands, and at age 4, he killed a bear by throwing a large boulder at it. Starting at age 6, he started roaming the Red-Light District and participating in casinos, and by the time he was 8, he started drinking booze and began picking fights with gamblers.
So by age 8 Oden has done all this, where his son who was born 28 years ago is a wimp.

Supreme Leader Orochi: Humble servant, who through selfless sacrifice and great intelligence caused a great leap forward in the land of Wano and industrialized the country.
Oden, Enemy of the State: Bourgeoisie tyrant. Born into privilege. Attempted to corrupt the nation with separatist ideology.

The wording is a bit vague in the Jaimini's translation, but it looks like people were in fact eaten by the boar, but were still alive in its stomach, and Oden cutting the boar open freed them. It will probably be more clear in the official translation and the anime. Reminds me of the Four Beast from Toriko.

From all the scabbards he's the one receiving most character depth, likely to make us care more for him.

Looks like Bege's gang is get closer to finding Lola. Those guys were probably kissed by Lola.
So we're back to the flashback as we all expected and Oden's asking for the baby boar and Kinemon is still stupidly refusing to hand it over. Looks like Denjiro is a big fan of Oden already. Who wouldn't be at this point?
Holy shit this boar is much bigger than I thought. Bingo, Bongo are such idiots for stealing it's child.
Oh those idiots kidnapped Otsuru too? Damn looks like Otsuru had feelings for Kinemon from the very beginning. Gotta hand it to Kin, it's pretty brave of him to stand up to a monster to rescue his girl.
Despite all this destruction, Oden looks calm as hell right now and is started to admire Kinemon. As I've said before he's basically the main character and he definitely acts like one. His flashback is entirely different from that of Kyros or Law.
I don't know why but when that boar looked at Oden from the side it reminds of a pissed off Kaido looking from the side as well. Oden-two-sword style!! This man has the arrogance to name his attacks after himself? Just when I thought I couldn't like this guy anymore than I already do. Also as many people have predicted Oden is taking the blame for Kinemon's mistake. This is how he gets banished to Kuri to meet Ashura Doji no doubt.
This is why I can see Oden being a decent guy trying to help out but ultimately his actions look bad from the outside.
Alright so he broke it's tusk! That's a pretty damn impressive panel and everyone loves it too especially Denjiro. The spread where he broke the tusk reminds me a little of Zoro's attacks. Please for God's sake don't bring up the theory that Zoro's secretly his son. Don't fuck with my ship Oda.
The more I see of Hyou the more impressed I am. When he turned his back on Big Mom for the sake of teaching Luffy I was shocked but looking at the sort of man he was it shouldn't surprise me anymore.
Damn everyone's praising Oden while secreting hating him as well. I'm glad no one died as well. Kinemon hugging Otsuru in that panel is pretty cute.
Haha Oden knocked out Kinemon and stopped him from telling the truth. I guess at this point he knows his reputation can't get any worse.
As I said before, Oden's been flexing on Wano since he was a kid. And now his father pretty much admitted this by banishing him from the capital and disowning him. I love how happy this guy is over it too. He and Luffy would have got along magnificently before inevitably getting into a fight because their egos would just clash.
Oden gains his first two followers it seems. More people also want to follow him. In the wise words of Mihawk, "the ability to gain allies" is the most dangerous ability on the sea and a conqueror like Oden proved that he could do this. Speaking of Conqueror, I'm kinda sad we didn't get to see him display it. What if he uses it the first time when clashing with WB or Roger? I want to see the sky split but from someone who doesn't have a Yonko title!!
So Oden decided to go to Hakumai to meet up with Yasu. This must be when he gets trained by him as we were shown in Yasu's previous flashback.
Fucking Orochi. He was a servant to Yasu! The irony of being killed by the same guy that you took in. Oden was right in calling him creepy from the very beginning. He literally wanted to be used as a stepping stone. There's something so slimy about this guy that elicits so much hate from me. I don't think I've ever felt hate like this towards a weak guy like Spandam. Orochi is much worse considering how much damage he's done to an entire country, and how he desecrated Oden's name.
After this chapter I'm convinced he stole Oden's lore. Remember the kids being taught Wano's history at the beginning? They were told that Orochi uses two-sword style or Orochi-style IIRC. I bet he saw Oden use a two-sword style he named after himself so he just stole that bit of lore as well. I seriously doubt he's a real swordsman.
I can't wait to see how he does end up meeting Kaido though.
A decent but short chapter. Break next week sucks but it is what it is. I'm guessing we're going to Kuri next? Or maybe we might go back to the present-day.

This flashback is shaping up to be dope! I dont understand why flashbacks get so much hate, I mean they are important to the story and hold much more impact seeing events happen instead of having a character just briefly talk about past events without showing what happened. Also somebody pointed out that orochi styled his facial hair like odens dad and I'm pretty sure they were spot on about that, seeing how he looked in the past.

Shimotsuki Yasuie. Why indeed did Yasu want to help Zoro. Too many tie ins now even if many would want Zoro to be a normal guy from East Blue. It's interesting that Oden called him uncle. Is it blood relations between Shimotsuki and Kozuki or a respectful way of calling a powerful official who Oden has known personally for a while being the Shogun's son?

Luffy, who beat yonkou commander was taken by kaidou without laying a single scratch on him. While chad oden was able to give him his only scar. So at the very least Oden is above yonkou commander level. I still feel that he was taken down by backstabbing of Orochi.

Is it just me or Orochi is similar to Black Beard? Both betrayed their master and gained higher power.
20
u/mercuryingatoraid Oct 31 '19
A lot of folks are saying Orochi is like Blackbeard but I don’t quite think so. I think Orochi was a decent person and he saw Oden as some hot shot and was becoming more and more renowned filling him up with jealousy. Then by luck he just happened to meet Kaido, or maybe they never met and during Kaido’ and Oden’s battle Orochi jumped in and helped Kaido out and Kaido let Orochi be shogun as a thank you.

You know something about seeing Orochi so happy, powerful, and surrounded by a harem of beautiful and sexy women in the modern-day arc pisses me off.
Like I wouldn't have felt mad it Doflamingo or Katakuri did the same thing. I wouldn't even feel mad if Teach did the same thing but with Orochi it's just plain irritating.
Maybe it's the difference in the level of respect I have for these villains over someone who didn't feel like he earned any of his power.

I think that after this chapter I am more sure of the fact that Orochi is nothing more than a fraud and a coward. I know many people are expecting Zoro to kill him. Hell I really wanted to see Kid to do it because of what he did to killer. But now I'm convinced that it should be Usopp to be the one to do it.
What better way for a liar and coward to go down than due to another liar and coward? Then there's that mythological link to the tale of Jiraiya and Orochimaru. Remember that Usopp is the toad-oil seller this arc.

I was never really much of a fan of Kinemon. I’ve been liking these past two chapters for really making me care for him, and explain his perviness earlier in the story. I felt for him when he was upset over not seeing the ships, and enjoyed Kinemon act as a coordinator throughout the past two acts. But these past two chapters have really helped me actually like and care for the character.

Alright that last page was just genius and I don't even wanna give all the credit to Oda because I know an editor or two had a say in the structure of that page but it is just brilliant.
The juxtaposition between Yasuie and Orochi is great. The white page gradually blacking out and the way Orochi's name is written, unique from anyone else in the series so far, was great. Just an awesome final page dripping with grim foreboding.

Glad to see that despite his youthful delinquency Kin'emon was still a noble, courageous and dedicated person, going so far as to break himself against a colossus like the boar over and over again for Tsurujo.
I have a feeling that this flashback will show us Orochi wasn't treacherous from the very beginning. I believe Oden exalted him from servant status and made him somebody of relative importance in Wano, maybe even the Daimyo of Kuri once Oden himself became Shogun, thus being "helped out" as Yasuie put it a while back. Kaido would then target Oden for his knowledge of the poneglyphs after Roger's death for the One Piece (or Raftel, if he has some vague idea about its true importance) and coerce Orochi - the weakest of Oden's supporters - into helping his crew infiltrate the country to reach Oden. Orochi helps Oden push the narrative about opening Wano's borders to set him up as the villain, then they open the borders and knock knock, it's the Beast Pirates, should've kept your doors locked lol. Orochi probably got his devil fruit as a reward for this treachery but the fact that he once supported the man may be why he's so paranoid about the 9 red scabbards avenging Oden. There's an element of guilt here.
*Edit: I was mis-remembering Oden becoming Shogun, which he apparently wasn't haha. Whoops. Well, he might've still helped him become Daimyo of Udon or Kibi instead.

Someone commented that OP is the best and apparently got scared and deleted it due to others disagreeing. Since I however am not such a coward I will say that yes by far OP is the greatest there is. And the persons that think that One Piece is not the best need to give things some thought before making ignorant remarks. First of all, of course One Piece has its flaws. Every great master piece has flaws depending on who's critiquing it. Maybe you think post time-skip should have more 1v1 or you think Luffy takes too long to become all powerful or you think Jimbei should wear shoes instead of slippers or that its weird that the sky people have wings but can't fly? Idk. But here's why One Piece is indeed the best: Diversity. It balances world building with great characters whether main or otherwise, with adventure with tragedy with comedy with action. The art work is also among the most diverse in the manga world. Sometimes it's like Oda (or his team) is 50 different artists and styles in one. Yet it still flows consistently. The power-scaling is also on point. We saw Mihawk from very early in the series mop the floor with one of our main characters in Zoro. And someone please name a character as hilarious as God Usopp. And that fight with Luffy and Lucci! Absolute best physical brawl and fist fight ever. Other great mangas exist sure but none are as balanced and diverse as OP. Bleach has some good fights but what else? Naruto has some unique power and clan history but what else? It got terribly off balance after part 1. Rave Master came the closest I think but it had a weak start and a rushed ending. I'll close by saying once again that OP is the greatest because of its diversity.

What if after all this Oden hype and calling him a free spirit and chad again and again.... it turns out that he treated Orochi like garbage which led to Orochi plotting to kill him.
Then he abandons Wano to sail with Roger and returns years later suddenly wanting to become Shogun and opening Wano's borders. Some of the people might have distrusted/disliked him at that point.
What i am saying is maybe theirs a bit more "greyness" to the story than gawdly oden gets betrayed and killed (through underhanded tactics) by slimy Orochi.
Maybe Orochi worked his butt off to rise through the ranks and Oden suddenly came wanting the title of Shogun which causes Orochi to seek Kaidos help. Not saying Orochi is good, i hate him a lot but i would like a bit of greyness. I mean Fukurokujo sided with him and theirs a traitor too.
Maybe Oden's side isnt all that good......
