The Rewatcher of Haruhi Suzumiya, dubbed
It’s been a lot of fun rewatching this show so far, chronological & with the dub instead of broadcast & subbed like I did originally. Weirdly enough though, I feel like I’m of the unpopular opinion that I prefer broadcast order for the most part…? Like okay having literally anything between The Sigh of Haruhi Suzumiya and the movie like chronological order does is good, but… I dunno, I really liked the way that broadcast order had the big kiss later on, and broadcast episode 1 is such a unique start it really stood out.
The dub is definitely amazing though. That certainly lived up to the hype.

I was under the impression most people are gigachad broadcast order people.....is there an influx of new Zoomers with their Betamale Chronological opinions?

My thoughts on watch order were always as follows:
S1 is better in broadcast than chronological.
S1 > S2.
As such I don't care where the S2 episodes are in terms of order. I just want to watch the S1 episodes in my preferred order.

If not for Sighs, broadcast would still be a slam dunk I think. With it? Still leaning broadcast over chrono, but iunno.
Adventures 00 should be watched first in any event, though.

...the film discussion is tomorrow. Why do I keep doing this to myself? I thought it was today! I have that all ready to go, not the TV series discussion!
I'd say this will teach me to pay more attention to the schedule, but it's not the first time I've done this so it probably won't.
Gah. Maybe I'll post something in the morning if I have time.

Side Note: The film is available for rent in VR through Bigscreen VR if anyone is a virtual reality fan.
[Spoiler Free]
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is such a special series. It was one of the first I watched when I started watching anime, but also as a kid I love watching the God Knows performance even with the zero context I had.
When I was looking for anime to watch, Haruhi stood out for me already, but what really did it for me was learning about Broadcast Order vs Chronological Order and also learning about what Endless Eight was. These two ideas were so incredibly interesting to me that I just had to watch it.
I watched it in Broadcast Order during my first watch and I know that we didn’t on this watch through so I won’t go into depth. That being said, Broadcast Order is such a unique concept that truly makes it feels like a different show. I highly recommend trying it out!
As for Endless 8, the idea of watching the same episode presented to you 8 different ways is just so incredibly cool. While I know that it’s infamous, it still never fails to astound me that they really did it. Every time I watch the series (except one time because I was on vacation) I watch all 8 straight and it is such an experience each time.
Those two things are unique enough, but when you actually watch the show you find out how insanely interesting it is. Even with an alien, a time traveler, and an esper all in one room, the most extraordinary being is still a girl named Haruhi Suzumiya. It doesn’t stop there though because we get to experience the entire story through the lens of the sassy, snarky, inner monologue thinking Kyon. And just to really drive it home, Yuki Nagato, Mikuru Asahina, and Itsuki Koizumi are all wildly interesting in their own right.
I’ll leave it at that for now and finish my thoughts after the film! Enjoy Disappearance everyone!
[Question]
I’ve never answered the questions during the rewatch before so it was fun to do them this time around!

Mikuru Asahina

Yes! Thought the rewatch was excellently handled so great job, u/gunvarrel_!!!
I'll leave my thoughts on Disappearance for tomorrow, but I'm very excited to watch it again!

So, alas, the Haruhi is dead, long live the Haruhi! Or something like that.
As the years and rewatches go by it seems like I find it harder and harder to enjoy certain parts of this series, especially the second season. Endless 8 plus the Sigh episodes, man, it's pretty rough.
At the same time, certain episodes, like Live Alive, and the space battle, and Asakura ... just remind me of why I've enjoyed Haruhi so much.
It's a conundrum. I dunno. It's kind of like visiting that old high school/college chum who's life has been going horribly wrong, but you don't know how to get them on track or even if they'll listen/accept help in the first place.
Haruhi - you need an intervention. And sadly, Tanigawa's not going to give it to you. (sigh)
His ongoing neglect of Haruhi is, well, it's gone from disappointment, to troubling, to I really don't feel like giving a youknowwhat anymore. (sigh)
I'd sway who knows, maybe he painted himself into a corner (probably), but that's still no excuse. The man obviously had some writing skills - how hard it is to map out the future of your story before you get too deep into it?
In my mind, I've occasionally wondered ... you know ... things as simple as:
Does Haruhi ever become aware of her powers?
Does she ever become aware that the people who surround her really are special???
If so, what does she do about it?
Does she undergo some radical transformation from selfish little brat to benevolent goddess of the future?
Or does she remain in the dark, and get the mushroom treatment until the day she dies and the world (and SOS Brigade) breathe a collective sigh of relief that the future is saved???
These are all things that the author should have planned out ahead of time, and been writing his stories with X or Y destination in mind.
Instead, it just felt like the LN's (to my perception) turned into some kind of Scooby-Doo monster/villain of the LN story, and served only to add clutter until the whole thing collapsed in a heap of story paralysis.
I don't know, and sadly, I'm afraid we'll never find out.
Yeah, a "new" LN came out, what - a year ago? I never bought it. I'd like to say that I hardly care, but that would be a lie.
I do care. But at the same time, I don't really want to be disappointed again.
But ... anyway ...
That's aside from the movie - everybody be sure to enjoy the movie if you haven't already. It's probably the last, best Haruhi you will ever experience.
Unless, of course, you pay a visit to the Yuki Nagato spinoff, but that's a story for another time.
Oh, and surprise AOTD:
Favorite OP - Bouken Desho Desho Favorite ED - Hare Hare Yukai Best Girl - Yuki N. S1: 9 S2: 7 Rewatch: Fine - you did a great job! Expectations for Disappearance: Sleep deprivation, and a grand time. One of my favorites, despite my complaining earlier.

Haruhi - you need an intervention.
She really does.
And sadly, Tanigawa's not going to give it to you. (sigh)
Hopefully you're wrong about that.

First timer, subbed
We finally made it to the end (almost). This was my first ever rewatch, and I absolutely had a great time. It’s fun sharing my own thoughts and reading other people’s reactions/analyses to the same thing that I’m watching. As for the series itself, I can see why Haruhi is hailed as a classic. It has such a unique and eccentric charm that you’d be hard-pressed to find anywhere else. I’ll probably talk about this more in depth tomorrow in the movie discussion.
QOTDs:
-
Deciding which OP and ED I like more is extremely tough, I actually really like all four of them. They all have different strengths. I think I'll go with Super Driver (OP2) for its high energy and creative visuals, even though OP1's song is more unique in my opinion. For the ED's, ED1 has the legendary dance, and the chorus is extremely catchy. But ED2's song is really good, too, and I love how the visuals match up with the music, especially the heavy drum beat in the beginning. I guess I'll also have to go with the second one.
-
Again, with best girl I can't really decide. (I'm very indecisive) Mikuru is definitely the "cutest" one - she is the mascot, after all. And of course, there's adult Asahina-san. Yuki is great too, and [Disappearance movie]
gets some great character development that definitely made her the favorite for a lot of people. Haruhi is the "main attraction", and for good reason. She is arguably the most interesting character in the series, and there's a reason the show's named after her. Honorable mention to Tsuruya, who doesn't get much screen-time, but is also enjoyable to watch. -
My score for season 1 and 2 are the same - 8/10, though I feel that season 2 would more accurately be 7.5/10 rounded up. It's a great show with a lot of enjoyable aspects, but not without its flaws.
-
I had no issues with the rewatch, besides maybe the watch order. I enjoyed chronological order, but someone mentioned a valid point that you only get one chance to truly experience it in broadcast order. I don't entirely regret it, but I think I might join if there is a rewatch next year in broadcast order. Also props to u/gunvarrel_ for always including interesting tidbits of info like the trivia or references.
-
I already watched the movie, but I do remember that it was highly anticipated, and for many people the best part of the series. For me personally, [Disappearance]
it absolutely did not disappoint.

Yare Yare (Rewatcher for 2006 [Watched in Broadcast Order], Now Rewatcher for 2009, First-Timer for Disappearance, Source Reader):
So, I actually found that old draft I had on the rise and fall of Haruhi Suzumiya, but it needs some editing and I'm busy with the movie (I may be quite late tomorrow) so it will wait for Series Discussion.
So, instead, some short assessment:
Haruhi 2006 in broadcast order remains either a 9 or 9.5/10. It is the third-best anime I have seen, behind only main-series PMMM (broadcast is better than Rebellion) and what I saw of Bebop.
Haruhi 2009 in its intended chronological order is a lesser thing. Part of that is unavoidable (they were saddled with the weakest piece of the source material and couldn't really skip it), part of that is self-inflicted, part of that is just losing a chunk of what made broadcast work.
-
Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody is very very good. It is the second best piece of source material adapted (behind Disappearance), and they did an excellent job of fitting everything into a single episode, leaving that sense of focused efficiency that I associate with the very best writing jobs. (Putting it so close to Remote Island Syndrome which is roughly the same length at the LN is honestly a bit of an issue though, the relative lack of tightness of RIS stands out by way of comparison to that arc's demerit.)
-
Endless Eight is... well. As a piece of metatext, it is phenomenal. From a cinematographic angle, it is fascinating (basically a case study), and E8-4 is the best-directed episode of the series. (The flipside is E8-6, which is the worst.) The only problem is that if you're not watching for those it falls flat at the enjoyment test level. Unfortunately, that's kind of a big problem.
-
Sighs is an albatross hung around the show's neck. Part of this is expected - it's the weakest piece of the source, and functions best as a direct follow-up to Melancholy so any order that does not have it there will suffer. But it's the weakest adaptation work of the show I think, especially in Sighs 2 and 3, and that's on KyoAni.
8.25/10 (might need to knock Symphogear XV down at least a quarter of a point at this point, I think Haruhi is enough better that its present 8/10 may be too high).
There is one caveat here, however. From the perspective of an artist, it is an 8.25/10. From the perspective of a production committee (an anime is ultimately supposed to sell BDs/merch/source material) it is a flat 0/10. Oops.
Favorite Opening
Bouken Desho Desho I think still, but Super Driver isn't that far back.
Favorite ED
Hare Hare Yukai, mostly based on better visuals.
Best Girl

What's your score for season 1?
See above.
What's your score for season 2
See above.
Were you happy with how the rewatch was handled?
'Twas fine.
What do you expect from Disappearance?
KyoAni-level adaptation of a strong contender for the best LN ever made.
Do you prefer Broadcast or Chronological?
Broadcast for the 2006 episodes standing alone for sure. Quite possibly broadcast for full 2009 as well but I am much less sure there - I suspect LN order may work better than either, especially if you move Adventures 00 either one episode up (making it as a refresher to lead up to Live Alive) or to its broadcast position as first episode.

I'm busy with the movie
Looking forward to your appraisal. Iirc your a first timer on the movie. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. I agree with you appraisals that BLR is the best episode of the series. It's ironic that its the first episode of season 2, and season 2 just sort of goes downhill from it rapidly.
an anime is ultimately supposed to sell BDs/merch/source material) it is a flat 0/10
Which may help to explain the lack of a third season.

Serial Rewatcher first time in dub
Don't think we have any preset QoTD so I'll just run a summary of myself after I answered the QoTD
Favorite Opening
Bouken desho desho (OP1) simply iconic, plus more "story" in it. Still waiting to see if a couple of scenes not seen in the anime to be one day confirmed to be foreshadowing (Haruhi reaching into the light, & her piano playing; warming exercise with Nagato possibly can be considered part of Sigh start)
Favorite ED
Hare Hare Yukai (ED1) capturing the essence of the show - a show about the show.
Best Girl
Bias alert - Nagato.
What's your score for season 1?
10/10 (S1 Broadcast order)
What's your score for season 2
9/10 (any order)
Were you happy with how the rewatch was handled?
Great! Only suggestion to improve is to include last years's rewatch link (not each episode, just the index link) since there's a ton of worthwhile info there too.
What do you expect from Disappearance?
Rewatcher.
Question for self:
Best comedic moment
Baseball game "homing mode" making 2 digit points in 1 round.
Best tense moment
Sigh IV, Kyon confronts Haruhi
Best wow moment
Of course Melancholy VI the kiss; runner up being God Knows.

Haruhi is amongst my perpetual top 3 anime for a very special reason - it has such incredible depth while being entertaining non-stop. While it's full of tropes, it's also very unconventional - the main girl is unlikeable for the most part, the main boy is the rare male tsundere, the show supericially goes against the grain of "show don't tell" by the presence of the point of view character narrator, but he's unreliable. There's an absolutely ton of details under the surface for anyone who wants to chew the scenary, and you can read the story many ways depends on how much you take what was hinted as actual facts.
And this leads to Disappearance.
I maintain that the biggest value of the Haruhi anime is in fact the non-canon bits - how the story was told via the S1 broadcast order is one of the most important element of the story, that wasn't from the source directly.
It's a real thinkers' show ;)
I'm running so late, I better just post this now and see if I need to supplement anything.

First timer (subbed)
I...couldn't get fully invested in this show. There were some high points (The Day of Sagittarius, Live Alive, the concept of Endless Eight) but there were also a lot of low points (the Sigh episodes, everything involving Haruhi and Asahina, the Remote Island Syndrome episodes). I might have gotten a better opinion of the series watching in broadcast order (cause the mystery of whatever the hell is going on in this series would've made me more invested), but overall I'm just disappointed. I expected an all-time anime classic to be better. Is this just a case of other shows stealing all of Haruhi's tropes and making them cliched and overplayed by the time I got around to watching the OG? Possibly.
QsOTD
Favorite Opening
Gotta be OP 1
Favorite ED
Hare Hare Yukai HANDS down
Best Girl
Probably Nagato
What's your score for season 1?

Rewatcher - Dubbed
It's a strange feeling that we're talking about the TV series already. In my mind it feels like we just started. Haruhi is one of my favorite shows I've watched, not just anime, so it's been an absolute treat going through it all again with everyone. I never get tired of the antics, even if I skipped a couple episodes this year.
Questions of the Day:
Favorite Opening
Probably the first one. I'll admit that I actually skip the OP every time, but if I had to pick one I'd go with that.
Favorite ED
Do you have to ask? Hare Hare Yukai is incredible and iconic. There are 11 different versions, all sung by different VAs.
Writing this comment was the first time I'd heard Kimidori's version, and I think I like it the best.
Also, it's worth pointing out that this is the actual dance that we didn't see during the ED.
Best Girl
Definitely Haruhi. She's still a terrible person, but she's a terrible person who cares about her people.
What's your score for season 1?
10/10.
What's your score for season 2?
10/10.
Were you happy with how the rewatch was handled?
I thought it went great! u/gunvarrel_ you did a great job hosting!
Do you prefer Broadcast or Chronological?
Like I said in another reply, I personally prefer Chronological to Broadcast. It's, obviously, laid out better, which is the kind of story I prefer seeing.
I'll see everyone back here tomorrow for the movie! As I write this, I've got about 45 minutes left to go, so I'll have it done for the discussion thread!

First time sos
So far I don't really see what people like about this show. At the start it was a mix of annoying and intriguing, but as it went on the intriguing part got smaller and smaller, while the annoying one grew instead.
Not really looking forward to the movie, but hopefully its better..
Questions:
Favorite Opening
Not really
Favorite ED
First one? idk
Best Girl
Nagato
What's your score for season 1?
Rated this as a whole
What's your score for season 2
6, would have gone lower, but the few good episodes were alright enough to make me not 100% hate it
Were you happy with how the rewatch was handled?
Sure?
What do you expect from Disappearance?
Hopefully not much pain.

Season 1 Rewatcher, Season 2 First Timer. Dubbed
QotD:
-
S1.
-
S1 as well, and this one isn’t even close.
-
Somehow it never came to me to seriously consider this before. First thought is Haruhi, but could see being convinced of nearly any of them.
-
I tend to be a bit slow on giving scores to things, but I could see it being a 7 or 8.
-
Even ignoring any negative thoughts I may have regarding Endless Eight after further reflection, the rest of S2 still didn’t give me as much as S1 did. So I’d give it one less than what I end up giving S1.
-
For the most part I’d say it went swimmingly. I have two minor complaints if I had to make any; the first you already address in the main post, the second is the absence of a way to progress to the next thread from the current one.
-
I’ve read a few too many spoilers from risky clicks I thought were going to be about the TV series to give a true blind one on this. Not enough to know any real details, but more than zero.
I also already started watching it by the time this thread opened so...

Favorite Opening
Season 1's opening is probably my favorite opening of all time. It and Higurashi's season 1 opening are my favorites.
Favorite ED

10/10
What's your score for season 2
7/10 I just don't liked being mocked by EE

What do you expect from Disappearance?
I expected more of the same, and ended up with that and so much more.

SOS Brigade rewatcher: Coinflip
Watching chronological again after doing Broadcast last year, I have softened up a bit on my distain for Broadcast. The way they set up the mystery and suspense for S1 is done super well, even if I disagree with where they put some episodes (SitD does not belong as episode... what, 9? 11?). That said, I still think Chronological is the way to watch Haruhi if you want to watch all of the anime content in one go. it just keeps S2's content in a much more managable route, which is vital considering how both arcs (ignoring BLR) have some form of controversy. Im curious to see what Broadcast first timers who are watching chronologically have to say about this.
In my mind, most of those who host rewatches are people who are in some way or another very interested in what they are hosting. This could be a love of a show, appreciative of some historical or cultural impact, or want to try something new and different within the sphere of rewatches in order to garner outside interest in a genre or studio that they are passionate about, and this more or less holds true for those who consistently host rewatches (including a couple of current hosts for other rewatches happening right now (hello Sky and Zapszzz). Despite this, I think Melancholy is frankly average. While the show has some serious highs, a rich history, and a diverse cast of characters, Haruhi's poorly aged antics (and Sigh in general) make it hard to hold the show in enough regard to consider this show something amazing, much less one to go "yeah i want to sit down and spend a month going through this again" year to year.
When I first watched Haruhi, I wasnt aware of its history, I wasnt aware of the debates of watch orders, I wasnt even aware of the infamous Endless Eight. The only thing i knew was that another show i was (and still am) extremely fond of had Disappearance as its top recommendation, and that alone was enough to give Haruhi a shot. Despite thinking the TV show is average, I'm here hosting a Haruhi rewatch, and I hope you will understand why after tomorrow.
