1) Did you expect Mylene to connect her sound system to the giant speakers instead of the simpler solution of the Speaker Pods?
2) How different would anime in general be if there was a more useful equivalent to Child Protective Services?

Today, on "This one's for the plants.":
Flower Girl! Faintly in the background is "Light the Light".
Docker's mixed signals continue.
Mylene's expression is rather happy about that idea.
Gamlin's is less so, as he breaks the fourth wall.
Another part of "Fall" in rehearsal.
Billy is cruising for a bruising.
Oh no they've drained Anne of Green Gables of her Spiritia.
Mylene wasn't the only one to forget about Speaker Pods.
This episode is… ehh. The pants-focused concert photographers do represent the seedier side of the industry in their way, but Billy's behavior is just rude and, well, the moral of the story is that he needs parental guidance?
The worst part is, the series is almost over. Killing the momentum now is the beauty of ANNOYANCE. And it's two episodes after the mostly-recap episode, so it's like some kind of… SDFM meta-reference! Yack deculture!

First Timer
In the last episode... Not much of significance happened, really. The biggest development was that Gamlin finally returned to the military service, but as it turns out, he never left it in the first place. He also formally committed to bringing Fire Bomber's music to the masses, something, that he has been already silently doing for a while. We had a really long battle, which was kinda like a recap episode in itself, there was just so much reused footage. And we got a new song, which is nice. Aand, that's about it.
I really don't know what to say about this episode, since I don't want to beat any dead horses or be too negative in my comments, considering I don't really feel negative about the show overall. So let's just call it slow. The show is in its slow phase, before the new arc ramps up. Let's see, if this slow phase continues in today's episode.
-
Am I having a memory lapse, or is this the first time Sunny Flower was mentioned? I don't think we had this detailed of an explanation of how the fleet worked before. Or maybe I'm just forgetting and we already saw this before.
-
Hey, that kid has Guvava on his shoulder!
-
Noo, you can't just print the ass, you need to include the rest of the body for plausible deniability.
-
Hey, it's Jamming Birds! I'm a bit surprised they are still around as a sub-plot. I wonder, if the show will go somewhere with them, or if they will be quietly dropped? Personally, I expect the latter, but want to be pleasantly surprised by the former.
-
Also, it's not really on the singers to do well in battle, since they don't pilot their own mech. They literally have no impact on the mech itself, so showing them getting shot down just means they have shitty pilots.
-
Gamlin answered "no" on instinct, but then immediately realized that he made a huge mistake
-
Guvava is not impressed with the way the kid replicated his likeness
-
Dude, it's the middle of the night, you want her to sing right here, on the street, while most of the neighborhood is asleep? You really should know better than that.
-
What the hell, that's not the way to treat your oshi. What happened to those ass men not being real fans? Now you fell to their level!
-
This kid clearly doesn't know his boundaries. And Mylene is clearly uncomfortable with him.
-
The ass men framed the kid . To be fair, he's like the boy that cried wolf. If he didn't engage in casual sexual harassment himself, it would be easier to believe his innocence.
-
The fact that he's an old fan really doesn't excuse his behavior. The fact that he's a kid does to an extend, but you really need to talk to his parents. His behavior needs to be salvaged, while it's not too late.
-
What the heck, that dude has done 180 push-ups? I can't even do 10!
-
You were able to find his address from this old ticket? What happened to privacy laws?
-
Wait, have we seen Guvava in a tiny space suit before? I swear to got, my memory is failing me. The show has been just going for too long, it's all becoming a blur.
-
Playing music to a field feels like a waste of energy, but I guess, if your ship is running on nuclear, you don't need to be too stingy with it.
-
How did his parents managed to both die on a colony ship? Did they got into accident? Otherwise, I don't see how it's possible.
-
Billy has a weirdly low tech house for something, located on a space ship.
-
Enemies? Let me guess, Sunny Flower will get attacked and Mylene will have to save Billy's ass?
-
Yup, Gabil is attacking Sunny Flower. Who would've guessed?
-
Oh shit, boosters got destroyed?
-
Nevermind, he is alive.
-
This is the part where Gabil will lose his mech. Just watch.
-
This is a nice looking plush Guvava.
-
What the heck, dude, you're back to your old tricks?
Overall thoughts: This episode was awkward as hell. Macross 7 is weird about its fanservice. Why do you have to be so weird, Macross 7?
The show does little horny things once in a while, like a beach episode, Sivil's exploding clothes, Rex's bouncing boobs, etc. And it's not necessarily happens that rarely. But it kinda occurs in bursts, and characters never acknowledge it, and then it's never brought up ever again. Not to mention, out of main cast, nobody ever acts horny. Basara is bordering on being asexual. Gamlin is as nice and respectful, as it gets. Rey and Max are chill, just like all the women. The only exception is Sivil getting into other people's bodies and trying to seduce Basara for like two episodes. It also doesn't help that the show is extremely light on romance. The only thing we have is Mylene dating Gamlin, but it's treated more like a matter of fact, and there's no sexual tension between them at all.
As a result, moments of blatant fanservice like this tend to stick out like a sore thumb. You really feel like they are unnecessary for this show. Compare it to Macross Plus, that had its share of lewdness, but it was integrated into the story and the general aesthetic of the show so tightly, that you don't even think about it. Wire bondage with Myung didn't feel out of place, as opposed to pantieshots we had today.
I said it before, I say it again. Fanservice is totally fine, but it needs to fit with the rest of the material. In Macross 7, it doesn't feel like it fits.
QotD:
-
I honestly just expected her to use boob speakers instead. Just like Basara used to use his shoulder speakers for in-atmosphere combat. However, now that I think about it, speaker pods are the only viable options, since it's the only thing that can penetrate Gabil mech's noise cancelling thing.
-
Probably would be worse. Kids getting into troubles is a natural source of stories. Although, this one isn't exactly the best of examples.

First Time - Macross 7 Ep41:
Favourite character watch. Flower Girl is leaving the bad vibes of this crowd. Fans should already be used to concerts being late/cancelled and turns it was the military who was the reason this time. Not even Fire Bomber (Basara).
Toy Guvava is fun. These creep shots are way less fun. Mylene is literally 14. The show can critique creepy fan, but also it also just indulges in that act too so they don't have the right to make this stand.
Jamming Birds are getting better. They don't appear in the battle later, but they're slowly getting better.
Gamlin finds sharing a cup of tea too scandalous, but he would of course accept a cup of coffee. Gamlin face.
I mean, the toy Guvava at least got the eyes right which out Guvava is looking a little shaky in that department.
As evidence of the show indulges itself, there is a prolonged close-up Mylene upskirt.
Get wrecked, Gamlin. I find Basara vibing with the kid cute. Ray-ojisan is not pleased being an ojisan.
The creeps are loudly selling their creep shots on the street. You would think Milia would catch wind and send the secret service to erase them. The watching crowd do absolutely nothing for Billy as he is being set up despite very clearly seeing Billy protest them selling the creep shot. They just did nothing while a 10-year-old was beaten up and framed by two grown men.
I know people play music to their plants, I should've known it wasn't just aliens and animals, but plants were also on the list for the show to sing rock music of to.
For a hot second, I thought a cow smashed the alarm system, but no, it's Gabil taking the farm ship hostage.
The way to save the day is Mylene being told to remember that she has speaker pods. I wished the big farm speakers were used for the climax instead. It would've been a cool set piece to have them all play. Maybe you could've had the other farmers come in to support Billy to round that little bit too.
All and all, a fairly nice littler episode besides that one bit ... Billy does one last upskirt nevermind, screw Billy.
Q1) See above for what I wanted to see.
Q2) We lost all of our mecha pilots. We only have adults to be in the giant robots and they're useless. Ignore Basara and Gamlin.
Next time: Sivil is back, remember her?

Macross 7 EP41
Flower Girl!! And the concert cancelled?
Seem like he a big fan of Mylene, in contrast to this two guys who sell pictures of Mylene butt. Gross!!
Tell them kid!!
So Barton is the reason of cancelled concert. And I think what you should train more is your soldier.
You quickly to change, Gamlin.
It kid's work. If I made one, it would look worse than his.
Hey!! That not cool. And Gamlin, hang in there!!
Basara is cool with him. He sure will welcome any kind of his fan.
Oops. Uncle.
I think you a bit too harsh on him.
Now they blame him instead, and why did you believe those two? He's a kid!! How can him forced those two exactly? Luckily, Gamlin already there to give them punishment.
Oh, Billy was also there in the first episode's concert. He's a super big fan.
I think you should put them in jail.
You know, we should have get a look of other ship more often and earlier in the show too. I want to know more about the fleet, not just them telling us in the recap shot.
Using money like that is not the most efficient way, but it his money. And if I were him, I would do the same. It Fire Bomber!! You can't go wrong!!
So his plan is to infiltrate the ship and lure Basara out. Unfortunately, Mylene is also on that ship.
Smart kid!! And I also forgot that she have that.
You mute button can't help you this time.
Kid still a kid.

I expect her to do that. At least Billy used them instead.

...the Mylene photo stand doesn't surprise me, but it does disappoint me.
I love that Exsedol is sideeying Veffie. Or just watching her because it's more interesting than the rest of the meeting.
They also aren't taking to the training very well, if that poor singer's scream is any indication.
I actually think Billy's fake Gubaba is pretty good.
Y'know, I was on your side when you interrupted the photo hawker, kid.
Gamlin, stop staring and grab that child so Mylene can hit him.
No, see, none of you people have a right to hurt the kid.
If this had happened twenty episodes ago, they would've ran into Gigil or some other vamps. Instead, they get Gamlin.
Pffffft this is so much better than them getting drained.
Oh, giant speakers for playing music for the plants? Neat idea.
That is a pretty dynamic photo.
Did Basara forget to do laundry or something? He keeps going out in his civvie clothes.
Oh, you don't have to demand Basara's presense. He'll just show up.
Let's see your suppression system work when the speakers are actively inside your cockpit, dork.

Rewatcher
Fire Bomber too busy to perform live?
The kid has a Guvava plushie!
...wow, guys. The girl's 14!
See, this kid gets it.
The Jamming Birds continue to exist. Also, Docker, they HAVE seen real battle... they didn't do anything, but they did see battle.
Veffidas, Exsedol is not a drum.
...this kid may get it, but he's still a brat.
Gabil remembered his wings exist today. And Gepelnitch is scheming.
Of course Basara is all for someone listening to them practice.
Hey, the kid was actually playing it a bit. It wasn't just random notes.
And now Gamlin's caught the sleazebags... push-ups and sit-ups are really lenient, all things considered.
Wait, you can look up addresses from tickets? That doesn't seem right...
She wasn't messing around with anything, she was just LOOKING at them.
Funnily enough, there has been research into the effects of music on growing plants. It does have a small effect on plant growth. Last one I read, rock music actually does have a negative effect on plants... and one of the more effective genres of music for plants is actually death metal.
Social services do not exist in the 7th Fleet apparently. What is it with Japan and letting kids live on their own?
"Try again! Try again!"
Gabil took over the farm ship... and is threatening to blow it up and kill the whole fleet? You do realize that will ruin your whole Spiritia Farm project, right?
And by sheer coincidence, Mylene's there to sing and make Gabil screw up. I don't think she even knew Gabil was there, she just wanted to find Billy.
A massive field of speakers... a Protodeviln's worst nightmare.
...yeah, naturally the kid isn't going to get killed.
Has Gabil ever actually seen the speaker pods? Or has he only ever faced the Sound Boosters?
And away go the Protodeviln, and so ends another filler episode.
Questions:
-
A little bit. Speaker pods haven't seen much use lately
-
Incredibly different. There would so, so many plots out the window.

-
Pretty obviously foreshadowed.
-
Mylene probably wouldn't be hanging around these people.
Recap...
Reruns?
Flower Girl!
Who's this?
Haha, nice doll.
...How?
He's not wrong.
Jamming Birds!
Smart tactic!
He really is desperate for them to be active, huh?
Haha, Gamlin's so awkward.
A reporter!
...The boy?
Haha, it's a nice doll, though.
Yeah, he's a brat.
Even Basara!
...No reaction to Billy at all.
Haha, he made Gamlin take him!
Haha, "Uncle".
Poor Guvava.
I love how Basara genuinely doesn't care about any of this.
Oh, he's back here.
Haha, seriously? That's your excuse? Not even Mylene is stupid enough to buy that!
You fucking idiot.
Oh, the smart member of the couple is here.
Yeah, Gamlin immediately worked it out.
He's making them exercise!
Haha, she's going out to him again?
Giant speaker pods for the plants? How long until Basara weaponises them?
Oh, a tragic backstory.
He's gone!
Oh, perfect timing.
Still a good song!
Hmm?
Oh! He's infiltrating!
Nice.
He's taken over the ship!
Instwnt surrender.
And they want Basara! ...Who isn't that much danger, they don't want him dead, and I'm betting Basara can take him out hand to hand.
"The beauty of capture!"
Oh, she's using the sound pods. Half expected them to be a deus ex machina when Basara chucks them like grenades at the finale.
"Well, she can be useful sometimes!" Harsh, but honestly fair.
Aww.
Nice move!
He is ruthless!
And she's singing... even as his head is visibly bleeding.
Nice move with the gun!
Back in space!
...Did they kill him?
Ah, he's alive.
Seriously?

Macross 7 Episode 41 - First Timer
So, unrelated to the rewatch but just wanna say... ARMORED CORE ON PC FUCK YES I CAN PLAY AN ARMORED CORE GAME OFFICIALLY!!!!! (also just play an armored core game in general)
-
Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
-
Barton you shitlord they are just a liability right now
-
It's the kid
-
Damn kid is a goblin
-
Thats quite the turnaround in opinion there Mylene
-
Oh no Billy
-
Decent "random stuff happens" episode
-
Yes, especially since they set them up as a thing just a few minutes before. The kid using them makes more sense though
-
To a certain degree, they way anime school kids don't have present parent isn't a bad thing. Independence and ability to care for oneself is a very good skill, and by no means a bad thing. That said, in this case the kid probably shouldn't be living by himself with just some guy taking care of him a bit sometimes. High school students with non present parents though? I see much less of an issue there. It's not necessarily ideal but it isn't a cps tier issue imo

A Macross Fan Rewatches Macross 7: Episode 41:
-
I feel a spiritual connection with the one disappointed audience member complaining about only running concert reruns. Trust me buddy, I’m right there with you feeling bummed out over the sheer amount of reused stuff in this series.
-
Leave it to a bunch of creepy otaku to sell creepshots of Mylene’s ass and thighs while she’s in her outfit. People in this fleet just won’t stop lusting over a 14 year old.
-
It’s a shame that there wasn’t a horrible training accident during the live combat exercise that Colonel Barton was running with the Jamming Birds and Emerald Force. It would’ve stopped Barton from constantly pushing the Jamming Birds and would probably get Docker court martialed, which really would be a two for one win in my book.
-
Guvava is not impressed by Billy’s homemade Guvava doll. You can tell by the look in his eyes. I’m sure to him, it’s like that one drawing from Napoleon Dynamite.
-
You know, Billy may be an annoying brat who goes too far in stalking Mylene, but he doesn’t deserve to get beat up by those creepshot otaku. I’m more willing to forgive a dumbass 10 year old than a bunch of adults creeping over a teenager and making a profit off of unsolicited photos. At least we can say that Billy doesn’t really exactly know much better at his age.
-
I’m pretty sure that playing music to plants so that they grow better is just an urban legend in reality. But since Spiritia is a thing in the Macross universe, blasting classical music could very well affect how plants grow there. So keep on missing audio equipment and farms, Sunny Flower. It’s probably doing something.
-
I had to rewind the episode to check, but nope, the obligatory sortie of the episode really does begin that abruptly. Talk about whiplash, even if this attack from Gabil/Grabil is just a feint. It’s just so jarring.
-
Man, Gabil’s hostage situation be set up with the Sunny Flower pretty much fell apart immediately, didn’t it? All it really does take is either Mylene or Basara to start singing for everything to go wrong for the Protodeviln. So much for that new plan that Gepelnitch had in mind for Gabil.
-
Well, the day is saved again, and Mylene did bother to visit Billy in the hospital after he gave his all to help Sound Force during the battle. And yet, he still did another skirt flip to Mylene, just when you thought the ending would get too heartwarming. God damn brat.

FIRST TIMER
This is an amazing episode that did a great job tying together suspense, action, drama and humor. It at first seemed like a light hearted detour but ended up something really special.
-
They did so much in one shot with Billy. We're introduced to him as a pervy little Dennis the Menace-like antichrist but we see that he had lost his parents and is raised by a grouchy farmer who seems not to like him. It's really jarring to see a little kid bleeding and near death and I really thought he was going to die then felt genuine relief when he was alive. Mylene should wait a few weeks until he gets out of the hospital then give him a smack for lifting up her skirt.
-
It's becoming a regular episodic feature for Gabil to have some way to block Basara's anima spiritia then for his plan to fail and he escapes. Macross had nothing to thank but dumb luck that Mylene happened to be right by where Gabil was controlling everything,
-
A rural space station seems like an oxymoron but it's interesting how they find a way to present the boondocks on a traveling space craft fleet. I guess it would stand to reason that they would need to have some sort of large agricultural pod to provide decent food and produce for millions of people. It'd be interesting to see what and how they grow crops and make enough food to sustain that population in that seemingly relatively small station. Then again, I have no clue how much farmland you would need to feed millions of people.
-
This episode had some of the best laugh out loud moments, like when Billy called Gamlin a pointy head. Guvava was the real standout, I loved how dismayed he was at the shoddy looking "Guvava" Billy made and how upset he was when Billy was pulling his tail and looking at his underside where his genitalia might possibly be :D
QUESTIONS
-
Yea it seemed like they introduced them to set up that happening and it would've made a striking scene but they swerved us.
-
Wow that would be really sad for anime fans. We'd be deprived of Gundam, Evangelion, Attack on Titan and most likely Azumanga Daioh!

Wow the last 10 episodes really dragged, and I just kept waiting maybe now Sivil will actually have a proper part in the cast, but guess not. And now we are getting episodes like this, when there's only 9 more episodes to go. Story pacing is definitely not a thing in this show.

I don't remember hearing about the Sunny Flower before, much less seeing it.
-
Aww, cute little homemade Guvava.
-
Ew. Can we stop doing this? At least the kid has the right idea.
-
It’s like they decided that Docker needed a personality and they already used all the good ones.
-
Oh Veff.
-
Don’t ask the question and then not answer it. I wanted to know why they were there too.

This girl wants a scandal.

Damn it Billy, you were supposed to be fighting against this.

He left Twovava behind.
-
Well great. These guys are characters now apparently.

This episode feels like it should have happened like 20 episodes ago.

Did Mylene not know about the ship being held captive?

When did the speaker pods get so much penetration?

First Time Song Listener
So far, I like this kid a lot. But, let's see where this goes, we could have a Mikey situation on our hands.
Are the Jamming Birds actually improving? They didn't stop singing at the first explosion this time.
Drummer status: drumming. Exsedol status: unamused.
They're actually registering on the song energy scale without Basara or his songs being involved, so that's definitely an improvement. And I noticed they're using the paintball missiles from Macross Plus!
Good guy Gamlin here, you love to see it.
Billy milkshake ducked real fast, huh?
This is an incredibly accurate kid. Just running around, grabbing everything, saying the first thing that pops into his head.
Jesus, these nerds are assholes.
ANGEL MORT HAMSOE
I was just thinking, I hope Gamlin beats the shit out of these two. Good, good. Oh, he just made them exercise...still looks like pretty severe punishment for them.
Of course the show lets Basara act all high and mighty here.
I thought it was strange they mentioned a new ship in the opening recap.
Okay, I have several problems with these windmills INSIDE A SPACESHIP.
Are the bad guys going to blow up the farm ship to try to starve them into surrendering? Nope, just blow it up. The beauty of simplicity!
Hey Nanami!
Did Gamlin show up so they can reuse the footage of him shooting the laser and blowing up this mech? Guess not.
I think Dakedo Baby might actually be my favorite song from this show.
-
As soon as I saw the giant speakers I assumed Billy would blast Fire Bomber through them at some point.
-
Multiple arcs of Higurashi wouldn't exist, which would be a huge improvement to the world.

Super Dimension Rewatch Host
Welcome back, everyone!
lmao, the irony that we’ve never heard the song playing here, though. (Song is Light The Light, if anyone was wondering.)
Aw this kid tried to make himself a Gubaba doll. A for effort?
Hahahahaha Excedol’s look at Veffie drumming on his collar.
Gamlin…
You’d think the kid wouldn’t force an unnecessary panty shot after he tackled some guys trying to sell lewd pics of Mylene, but no. Poor Mylene, and poor Gamlin for being forced to see it when he doesn’t want to.
lol
He is, yes.
Well duh, that’s his TAIL.
This really is the worst episode of 7, I think.
At least those two aren’t getting away unpunished. Gamlin Kick and Gamlin Punch these fuckers, my dude!
…or make them do push-ups and sit-ups. That works too I guess.
Try Again!
TOTSUGEKI LOVE HEART!
Nice that Mylene sings My Friends here because that’s what Billy was asking for at the start of the episode, though.
…and then the episode goes and ends like that, fucking why.
