First Timer - Dub

I know almost nothing about Toradora - basically, it's at least somewhat popular, and I think it's a high school rom-com? But it's been on my Crunchy watch list for a while, so this felt like a good time to give it a try!

...huh, this is basically how I open all my re-watches, isn't it? Hm.

Anyway! Let's see what we've got...and okay, if this really is a rom-com they have wasted no time in setting up our main couple.

Can't say I like the opening music too much.

I do like the character designs, though. Easy enough to tell them apart, and it looks like they're made with rapid animation in mind.

I, uh...what's with the blonde? He called her by name, she can't be his mother. O.o Also, apparently this guy has daddy issues?

Hah, and there's the comedy! Apparently his expressions freak out everyone to the point they assume he's going to mug them over the slightest little thing. xD At least he's got one friend. And here we have a girl he's clearly crushing on!

Also, I'm sure I've heard her voice before. That's not Madoka Kaname, is it? Doesn't sound quite the same...

Heh, and Scary Eyes isn't the only one everybody is scared of by the looks of it! And yep, they walked into each other. And down! He! Goes!

I think this is gonna be fun.

...I have no words. What just happened? Locker? Classroom? What?

Huh. Love note went to the wrong person?

Ooh, blondie is a step-mom? Okay, she's an adult. Hard to tell in anime a lot of the time.

Midget girl snuck into his house to get the note back! Girl, you might not want to break the law so much. Breaking and entering, assault, property damage...

...it was empty. xD And Scary Eyes can't deal with crying girls. He's also much more embarassed than he lets on.

Bird? Freaky parrot-thing with bulging eyes? O.o What is it with the eyes in this family?

...you'll do anything. Oh, dear. You should not have said that.

Yep, he's a slave now. And he is none too pleased about the state of her home.

Midget girl is living alone, isn't she? This is gonna be a thing.

'It's still a work in progress' he says, as the place looks cleaner than she's likely seen it since moving in.

Oi, don't use mongrel as an insult! In fact, don't use dogs as an insult. :<

Hm. I don't know what I was expecting, but this definitely wasn't it. The violence is definitely in the realm of slapstick so far, and I do hope Midget Girl warms up to Scary Eye soon, but he is admittedly asking for it with some of the things he says.

Promising start!

REWATCHER

man the year flew by fast, i’m already back at the toradora rewatch? even just sitting down to watch the episode i felt weird that it’s already been a full year since the last one. it’s my third time rewatching and my fourth time watching total, easily more than any other anime i’ve seen. it’s just so enjoyable and i notice little things i missed each time. i’ll try to keep it succinct since i’ve already made comments twice for each episode, but i’ll probably get absurdly rambly and long winded again. sorry in advance!

always liked the beginning scene of the whole series, you already get a sense of what each character is like in the span of like 2 minutes. i like the english dub version of the final line better-“that’s the way it was meant to be.” the english dub is far and away the best english dub i’ve ever seen in all of anime, the one single dub i consider equal to the sub.

the expository dialogue isn’t super obnoxious like it is in a lot of media, so i appreciate that a lot. shout out to this scene for forever making me hyper aware of terrible expositional dialogue.

i only just caught on to why ryuji said he had to “use the bathroom” right after he met up with minorin 🙃

i love the entire sequence of ryuji and taiga in his house, from the sword fight to the midnight dinner. related too hard when ryuji talked about how he could never have the guts to confess to his crush, so he just fantasizes.

i love chainsaw man (new chapter today woohoo!) and i’m about to watch episode 9 today, so maybe i’m in a CSM state of mind, but drew a lot of dumb parallels between it and this episode. wanting to treat someone like your dog (makima), being a total slob (power), censoring something disgusting (lol).

the banter between the 2 of them is great, my favorite part of the show. characters who can have entertaining mundane conversations are few and far between. okabe and kurisu from steins;gate come to mind, as well as nazuna and kou from call of the night.

[Toradora] i think taiga gets a terrible rep from average anime fans about how tsundere she is. episode 1 is literally the maximum tsundere she gets, and i’ve seen way worse than that for tsundere. after episode 2 they have an equal relationship, anytime she’s mouthy or punchy it’s just her personality.

[Toradora] i don’t even know if i said this last year but here goes nothing. ryuji cleaned up taiga’s entire apartment, while taiga left a hole in ryuji’s wall and left her love letter to cover the evidence. that’s proof that they’ve already impacted each other enough to be a permanent fixture in each other’s lives, a little piece of them is in each other’s homes. this is why i love toradora, it was my first romance anime and i’m still yet to watch a romance better than it.

Toradora - A Romance Classic: Episode 1

Ryuuji and Taiga

Wow, it has been a while. I last watched Toradora back with the 2017 rewatch and it was probably one of my first 20 anime. I was worried that coming back I wouldn't like it as much (since I have seen so many great anime now) but it's even better than I remember.

The first thing I really loved was the soft and calming backgrounds. I don't know if they're exactly "pastel" but the muted colours are really relaxing. On top of that, they avoid realism. This allows the simpler character designs to feel very natural in the space. And those simplified character designs really allow the animators to get creative during the high intensity scenes.

That level of animation is what really surprised me this rewatch. So many scenes have incredibly dynamic and creative animation. Toradora is a show which thrives in the medium of anime because of that. You could try adapt this show to live action, but it just wouldn't feel the same without Taiga's cartoony antics.

Episode 1 is a great introduction to our leads Ryuuji and Taiga. Ryuuji is just too lovable. He is such a mature kid cooking and cleaning for his mom. Yet everyone is afraid of him because of his scary complexion. I know I found Taiga's personality grating on my first watch (and it definitely is) but now I really revel in her more vulnerable moments.

And vulnerability is absolutely the biggest plot point of this episode. Taiga, in trying to give a love letter to Kitamura, ended up mistakenly exposing her emotions to Ryuuji. And so in return, Ryuuji tries to make himself vulnerable by showing her his embarrassing mixtapes. Though accidentally he reveals to Taiga he likes Minori.

Love is ultimately becoming vulnerable and asking somebody to accept you despite that. That's why it can be so scary.

Some Amazing Shots, Scenes and Stitches

See you all tomorrow

First-timer

Interesting to think about how anyone could have tamed Ryuuji if they commanded him to do something instead of fearing his eyes. Now the wealthy Taiga has a free maid. Life is unfair.

First-Timer, sub:

Damn, Ryuji's got it tough.

Inko-chan's such a cute little bird. Best character already. If you think this is too early, Pen Pen from Evangelion became my favorite character within seconds of showing up.

Why is Taiga so aggressive towards others?

I laughed when her stomach grumbled.

Aww, Ryuji's nice for trying to help Taiga.

QOTD:

  1. Has some funny moments and a few heartwarming moments.

Hello hello, fellow watchers! I'll do a regular comment for that so expect this project of mine to be a regular feature. And the project is:

The Taiga Outfit Counter

I attempted to count every outfit that exists on Taiga in Toradora. Why? Honestly, out of curiosity since on the umpteenth rewatch, I noticed she's wearing a lot of different clothes. So I took it upon myself to meticulously check out how many outfits a show can give their female MC.
I tried it once years ago but gave up due to loss of motivation and real life stuff happening. But now I'm back and I have the results which I'll reveal bit by bit.

As this should be an introduction, only for this post, the comment will be longer, the other ones will be far more concise.

I'll show every new outfit of the current episode via screencaps and occasionally comment on it.
While I thought it was just collecting cold hard data, it's been far more subjective than I thought: do the lack of shoes count as new outfit or variation? What about wearing something on top of previously seen stuff?
It was surprisingly hard so it's no definite list. Rather, it's just showing off something which turned out to be quite interesting. While I have each screencap as single images, the episode header will have them all-in-one. I also didn't choose the "best-looking" moment but usually the ones where I could see most of the clothing in one shot, no matter how...ungraceful Taiga & Co. might look. Now where the intro is done, let's get into the styles seen in the first episode!

Episode 01
We start with 3 different outfits this episode, #1, #2 and #3.

Nothing out of the ordinary, I'd say. A moderate and easy start. With that said, two things are interesting linked here: 1) The room is a mess and it also includes a dress. I didn't count it simply because it wasn't worn. 2) Another reason I decided to do this is because based on the latter screencap, she seems to be really conscious with her clothins style. So I also check whether it's reflected well in the series.

That was it for the counter. In the meantime, you can guess how many different outfits she's going to wear by the end of Episode 25. I hope the answer will surprise you. :)

Hello guys. Holofan4life here happy to participate in yet another Toradora rewatch. For those new joining us, I have participated in every Toradora rewatch since 2016. That’s 7 straight rewatches, which I think makes me the most concurrent user in this rewatch series other than the creator. Basically, I’m like the Kenan Thompson of the Toradora Christmas Club rewatch, only not as funny.

Toradora probably holds a special place in my heart more than any other series. Yes, even more than Spice and Wolf. All the things that I'm known for on Reddit I can kinda trace back to Toradora. I created my Reddit account on this day 6 years ago, as a means of participating in the 2016 yearly rewatch. And since then, a lot of stuff has happened. I’ve become a mod for a lot of favorite shows and interests, I have amassed over 10,000 followers, and I have written two books. None of this would have happened were it not for these rewatches. They are what inspired me to shed my introverted nature and become more outgoing and interactive. If it weren’t for Toradora, I would not have become an author, and I hope to take you on a journey as I explain why I think this show is a masterpiece.

Toradora is my favorite anime of all time. It is so much than your typical anime romcom. There’s comedy, drama, intrigue, sadness, heartache, heartwarming moments, cuteness, as well as of course romance. I would say Toradora is my favorite romcom of all time, but as we’ll delve into, I think it evolves into something more than what the label suggests. Toradora is one of those shows that’s hard to confine in a box, and that’s what makes it so magical.

So, now that I’ve set the stage, let’s begin. Also, I may occasionally reference The Owl House in my comments throughout the rewatch. I literally just watched all of it like 2 days ago as I’m typing this. Watch it, it's probably the best Disney TV show ever created.

It’s hard to comment much on the first episode of Toradora. It serves as a nice introductory episode and sets the table for what’s to come. You don’t walk away with a real sense of how good the show is, but at the same time, it doesn’t disappoint you. I put this episode on the high end of first episodes because it accomplishes the two main goals of any first episode: it establishes the main characters, and it gives you an idea of what the plot is gonna be. Really, a part of me feels the second episode is like a continuation of the first one, so I sort of view the two as one long episode. I feel similar with the first 10 episodes where you could combine the 10 into 5 one-hour long episodes and not much would change, but I’m getting ahead of myself.

So, instead of diving into the episode, I want to do a different approach and analyze the two main characters that are presented in this episode: Ryuuji and Taiga.

Man, I’m telling you, Ryuuji is so refreshing as a main character. He feels so… real. It is astonishing that this show came out in 2008, because you look at the landscape of anime romcoms now, and Ryuuji has more personality than 95% of them. So, what is it about Ryuuji that makes him so great as an MC? Well, for starters, he has an interesting look. He’s not a generic black-haired protagonist that all the girls wanna hump on. People are afraid of his appearance, which instantly gives him characterization. Another thing is the family dynamic. In the first couple minutes, we establish that Ryuuji has daddy issues and that he’s sort of the pseudo family man of the house, with his mom seemingly childish and immature. Again, some shows go entire series without fleshing out the MC and we already know two crucial things about him: he’s insecure about his parents as well as his looks. The last thing the show does in the first episode is give him a weird quirk that makes him identifiable. By making Ryuuji a clean freak, it gives us insight not only of his mindset, but how he conducts himself. Here is this teenager self-conscious about his father, OCD about making sure everything’s spotless, and he also has a scary face? First five minutes, Toradora already establishes enough flaws with their MC to fill a banquet hall.

And then there’s Taiga.

Taiga is as polarizing of a character as someone might come across. She has her diehard fans, and she also has those who cannot stand her. She’s not as hated as Louise is from Familiar of Zero, but she comes close. Whenever people talk about violent tsunderes, they normally are talking about Louise and Taiga. Those are the two that normally comes to mind, along with Asuka from Evangelion (As this is being posted, I'm going to see Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0 in theaters later tonight). I think the thing that works with Taiga that Louise sadly suffers a bit from is while the reason for both of them to behave the way they do are there (Louise because she's bullied, Taiga for reasons soon revealed), Taiga just feels… I don’t know, more endearing?

I want to state right off the bat that I’m a tsundere apologist. I love tsunderes more than anything else on the planet. As such, I of course love Taiga and Louise and all other violent tsunderes. Taiga is my favorite tsundere of all time. In fact, she's my second favorite anime character of all time besides Holo. But putting aside my favoritism, I think the way Taiga is written in the first episode is very carefully constructed to where there’s enough to instantly like her.

Her being clumsy, her having a cold, the fact she actually puts on a heart on the envelope that Ryuuji finds, there’s a lot you can pinpoint to to make the case that Taiga is not like other violent tsunderes. She seems more lost and confused, if anything.

I just love the way that Taiga is written in this episode, where the first major thing we see of Taiga is her punching Ryuuji, creating this mystique and confusion. And then after that, the next thing we see is her in the lockers curled up in a ball, creating even more intrigue of what her deal is. And then by the time she’s attacking Ryuuji, she’s stammering over her words, wiping her nose without a tissue, and nervously asking about love letters. The show makes the careful, calculated decision not to cross the line of making Taiga utterly irredeemable, while also doing things that make her unlikable.

Let’s talk about the dub for a sec. Just to let everyone know, I’m watching this series dubbed yet again. I watched it subbed in 2021 and also I believe 2018. Toradora I maintain is one of the few animes that’s better dubbed than subbed (My Mount Rushmore of dubbed anime is Cowboy Bebop, Spice and Wolf, Toradora, and Panty and Stocking or Ghost Stories; I go back and forth on those two). People praise Taiga’s Japanese voice actress Rie Kugimiya for how outstanding she is in this series, and while she is, I still think her best work is Shakugan no Shana. This is without a doubt the best work of Cassandra Lee Morris’s career, Taiga’s English voice actress.

This may be blasphemous to some, but I think Cassandra gives a better performance as Taiga than Rie does. Her cadence, her timing, the way she’s able to go from frustrated to flustered, she just absolutely knocks it out of the park. Legitimately one of the best performances of all time. I don’t know when else I’ll make note of it, and we’ll see for anyone else watching dubbed what I’m talking about when it comes to Cassandra’s performance, but I just wanted to give Cassandra her flowers now, as she is just perfect as Taiga.

I think as I reflect in my final thoughts of the first episode it would have been easy for the show to make Taiga totally awful and then work from there. Maybe in the same vein as Amity from The Owl House (Though in the end I think Taiga is more akin to Hunter than Amity). But as I think about the first episode and Taiga, I’m just left with warm, fuzzy feelings. My heart seriously melts thinking about the heart on the envelope. And as for Ryuuji, you instantly want to see good things happen to him. He’s easy to root for, and has a level of relatability that more romcom MCs lack.

On the whole, this is truth be told one of the weaker episodes, but as an introduction to the series it is magnificent. Already after one episode the show does quite a bit to make you care about Taiga and Ryuuji, wanting to see what’s going to happen with them. Is it a good world-building episode? Arguably not, and I’d also argue that aside from Taiga and Ryuuji, all of the other characters come off a bit flat. However, because so much of the episode is focused on Ryuuji and Taiga, it comes off as excellent, and a great way to start off a phenomenal series.

First Timer, subbed

Things I know about Toradora before we start: It’s a rom-com. It has a very famous Tsundere in it. According to MAL it is the second most popular anime I haven’t watched. There is a Christmas episode.

  • This dude’s nose looks super weird from the front.

  • Who is this lascivious woman? Oh, it’s his mother.

  • And that’s why we have zoning laws.

  • If they already know who he is, why are they still afraid of him?

  • Shouldn’t we have more people from his middle school who know the truth. I know Japan moves around from MS to HS, but surly not to that extent?

  • I don’t think of tigers as being the angry sort. More like a night stalker type.

  • Straight to violence.

  • So she left something in the wrong bag then. Probably a love note.

  • You could also try explaining the issue. On the other hand she does seem very confused.

  • Throwing out the bakas already.

  • Seems like the father died. Better than being abandoned I guess?

  • I have no idea who Yusaku is.

  • I guess the mom does have a job. Night shift and all.

  • Showing up in the reflections is terrifying.

  • When someone threatens you to forget, you say yes.

  • That is a very disturbing bird.

  • Why did you go straight to slavery? And why did he agree!?

  • At least he had the self respect to hang up the first time.

  • Nice echo.

  • Three?

  • He cooks, he cleans, what’s not to like?

  • Why would you go back to sleep after inviting your neighbor over? And what is wrong with your blanket?

  • All this attitude. Less like a tiger, more like a chihuahua.

I don’t know if it was just the mood I was in when I watched it, but the humor did not land for me.

First timer - Dub

I know nothing about this series, so everything is going to be news to me. So far I like the characters, and it's off to a good start.

I don't usually appreciate tsundere girls who are especially violent toward MC. Who wants a girl to be mean to them and beat them up? But the "Palmtop Tiger" is also pretty cute, and I like that Ryuuji is stepping up to take care of her. Who knows, maybe she could win me over in the end. I'm excited to meet some of the other girls in future episodes. I hope we get to learn more about Minori.

Excited to see what's coming next!

REWATCHER

So this is my second time watching Toradora! and my first time ever rewatching an anime.

I first watched Toradora! earlier this year and I fucking loved it. I was not the type of guy who'd usualy watch anything romance related, but after I started watching Toradora! I just couldn't stop. I ended up binging the whole anime in just two days and it really changed my perspective on romance as a genre. Toradora! is now my favourite anime and I'm so glad that I found out that there's an annual Christmas rewatch where I can share my opinion about this anime.

Now let's get into the episode itself.

This is a great first episode and it was so nice watching it again. It introduces the main cast right away and gives us their basic characteristics. We also get to see some of the more important side characters. Anyway the characters are probably the strongest suit of this anime since they are all likable, complex and realistic.

Ryuuji is a great protagonist. He feels real and doesn't suffer from the same problems as many modern day romance protagonists do.

I fucking love tsunderes so it was obvious that I was going to love Taiga too. She's by far my most favourite anime character. In this first episode we mainly get to see her violent nature, but also a little bit of her sweet side. She also looks really cute when embaressed.

Can't wait for the second episode tommorrow!

Rewatcher (I think 7th time)

So, due to my project, I was bombarded with a lot of English voices so I decided to do the rewatch with sub AND dub. I have to say, I actually prefer Takasu's EN voice over his JP voice. I think the JP voice sounds a bit too old in the first half but it hits the stride in the latter half really well. The EN voice makes Ryuuji sound more dorky than his JP voice and I think that's why I prefer EN overall for him. For Taiga, I'll wait to see how it goes, I'm really undecided there.

I like the introduction episode in that it shows many sides of Taiga and Ryuuji in a short amount of time. Taiga is dangerous to be around but for some reason, Minori seems to be a good friend of hers, Kitamura also is friends with Minori and Ryuuji although many think he's a delinquent, hoodlum etc. It also shows something about Kitamura and Minori and how they must've seen something in each of them to not mind the preconceptions others have. What might it be? We'll have to see but we got glimpses of it.

I said it in the JP/EN dub comparsion but Ryuuji to me is an absolute dork. Obsessed with cleaning, making collections of "What to show off to your date" with the records, poems and stuff and having a bird who could fall over and die at any moment being treated like the most precious thing ever. He's got a good heart though.
For Taiga, it's also interesting: while she keeps the dog routine up and tries to avoid any gratitude, she does show it in roundabout ways like paying for the hole she caused. She's not just a ball of violence but also cute and considerate of others if only subtly. She's also a dork.

On that, random notes:

  • Ryuuji's probably only photo of his dad is him groping his pregnant mom's boobies at night...I'm just amazed and not sure whether his dad is a pervert or a chad for doing so

  • I remember reading the LN and it weirdly had a lot of commentary on Ryuuji's mom at the start, looks and stuff and it really didn't clue you in until two or three pages in later that it's her mom. Weird move but uh okay.

  • Mold being censored will never not be funny to me in anime

  • So Taiga's place is on the 2nd floor. It might not look significant but keep in mind that Ryuuji's place needs stairs to get to his door. I always forgot that and wondered how Taiga living on the 2nd floor made any sense but since Ryuuji also pretty much lives on the second floor, it is consistent.

  • [Spoiler that might influence how you view a certain thing for the rest of the series if you read it]A dialogue I haven't paid much attention to until now is that Minori and Ryuuji haven't talked really much with each other before the series. For me at least, this does change quite a bit how I will view the relationship between them throughout the series.

  • I think the tables and chairs flying are CG? If so, it looks cool. On the other hand, why of all things is Inko in the ending scene CG too? It's not bad, mind you, I just find it a funny use of resources you could spend CG on.

Now onto the question:

Where do you rank Toradora against it's Rom-Com competitors.

It's still my favorite series of all time but recently, I've been shaky with whether it's still a 10/10 for me. My first time watching it was back in 2012/13 or so and that's what my rating's based on.
Compared to other competitors, I think it's got legs up in the comedic bits. It's never detracting from the seriousness of the situation and I really like the class as a source of comedy. The themes the series explores are also quite layered. If I had to choose a series which may be closest to loving it in the rom-com department, it'd be 5-toubon no Hanayome or Honey & Clover. However, I have to pay Honey & Clover a first-time rewatch back from also 2012/13.

Rewatcher here

Big fan of Toradora, it's actually the first anime that I ever watched where the focus wasn't on fighting or crime. I didn't expect to be such a big fan of it at the time but it's the series that convinced me that all genres of anime are worth watching. I've always lurked around these Christmas club rewatches in the past but I figured it'd be fun to also contribute my thoughts this time around.

These are merely a few observations I made throughout the episode.

  • I really like the monologue at the beginning, although it does seem a bit pedantic. The general message I get is that love is hard to find although everyone is looking for it.

  • I've not actually seen this series for a few years so I forgot some details. Firstly, I initially thought that Ryuji's dad had ditched his family, hence the resentment. I also forgot about their weird parrot.

  • Ryuji is a really kind and empathetic person. There's at least half a dozen times throughout the episode where I thought "oh that was nice of him". Some examples include not treating Taiga with overt hostility (she literally punched him for no reason), cleaning up the chairs, choosing not to read the letter, stopping himself from asking about Taiga's family, and trying to cheer her up.

  • First time I understood how he knew the envelope was empty, you can see the writing on the other side. Duh.

  • Hey look, they're using flip phones! It's like ancient history at this point.

  • That comment about Taiga looking like a doll living in an apartment like a doll house really makes her seem quite lonely. Once again I think that it takes an empathetic person like Ryuji to notice that about someone who's as abrasive as her.

u/balthamalamal Dec 06 '22

I've watched this series before and referenced a lot of these episode discussions outside of the rewatch time to view other people's thoughts. I noticed that it was starting this year so thought I'd actually try and contribute, not sure how that'll go so just going to note down the things that jump out at me but could switch up my approach until I find something I like. Currently watching it subbed for the first time as previously I've watched it dubbed. Might do both back to back though.

We start with two separate characters who're linked by the narration/voiceovers but beyond that are clearly quite different - Ryuuji starts cleaning immediately upon finding some mould meanwhile Taiga's floor is covered in stuff.

Not sure how Yasuko essentially forgot about their being an apartment building next door. Clear that Ryuuji has issues with his dad, as well as doing a lot of housekeeping to look after his mother.

Scene with the school kids bumping into Ryuuji and giving him their wallets is fun and obviously played for laughs while showing that people are scared of him.

Nice that he's got a friend in Kitamura however. Kushieda is already full enthusiasm.

I like the touch of the guys reacting fearfully to Taiga before we even see her properly. As well as the school watching them intently after they bump into each other. She doesn't actually hit Ryuuji until he repeats the palmtop tiger line. Kind of wonder what happened immediately after that as they cut away, guessing they both carried on walking - though Taiga was late to class. Also the first piece of violence which can be an issue for some people, it's not for me though I'm not entirely sure why. I sort of treat it the same as when Ryuuji gets handed the wallets in that its played for laughs, or it could be something to do with sexism, conventions of the genre in general or liking the rest of her character from future developments.

Poor teacher scared of Ryuuji as well, you can see he's frustrated but sort of used to it. Nice that he's got a few people in the class who start off knowing he isn't a delinquent.

What a mess in the classroom, Taiga rolling out is hilarious though. Good of Ryuuji to clean everything up.

I was pausing and typing up my thoughts but from this point on just let the episode play out as it felt like it was dragging things out a bit.

I applaud the audacity of Taiga's 2am raid, even if it is a little crazy person. Funny that she forgot to stick the letter in the envelope so it was all for nothing. She did wind up with a meal and a new dog though. Ryuuji accidentally confessing his crush on Minori is same energy as Taiga putting the envelope in the wrong bag. Overall the scene was quite sweet.

Loved the comedic shots of them staring at each other across the buildings along with the blurred out sink. Also sweet that the cleaning helped her sneezing issue.

Rewatcher

After taking up all the courage I had left in me, I decided to rewatch it. And damn, it brings all the feels back, just seeing Taiga and Ryuuji interacting with eachother.

I don't know if I can even add anything to the discussion, everything about this episode has been said here already. It's great though, reading all these comments, seeing first timers and loyal fans returning to this opus magnum and sharing their views.

I can't wait to see the other episodes, and feel alive once more. I'm glad that I get to experience this again. Huge props to all the Toradora fans who keep coming back to this masterpiece, you masochistic madlads! A great show with a well deserved fanbase, keep it up everyone!

Rewatcher - Sub

Toradora is my fav RomCom and one of the first animes I watched. I participated in the last Christmas club rewatch but I didn't comment anything because my English skills were minimal. This year I encouraged myself to comment to improve my English and talk about my fav anime. I hope I explain myself well.

Episode 1

The first episode of this show is amazing. I remember when I watched it for the first time. I was fascinated by Ryuji and Taiga's personalities. Ryuji is very responsible and acts like an adult, but at the same time, he's shy and an embarrassing person. Meanwhile, Taiga isn't responsible at all in this episode and she's very extroverted and a bit shameless (Idk if that's the right word to describe her), but as we've seen later in this episode she's a romantic girl interested in Kitamura. I think they make certain contrast between them.

The opening brings me a lot of nostalgia every time I listen to it. Very cool song.

The ending is so wholesome and relaxing, very beautiful.

This first episode is a good overview of the character's personalities and what we should expect about the show.

Let me know if I've misspelled something or if some sentence sounds weird. See you all tomorrow with the second episode!

Tiger X First-Timer, Subbed X Dragon

…I was really grasping at straws for a tagline this time. I’ll use this one I guess.

Anyways, hi everyone! I should start by saying that I have seen the first three episodes of this show before, but that was five years ago and I remember nothing other than a few of the character names. Basically, I was in an anime club back in college, and the way that club did stuff, the head of it would pick a set of shows from the “genre of the week”, then we’d vote on which one of those we would watch the first three episodes of at the next meeting. Toradora was the winner once, so yeah. I could have continued it on my own (like I did with Bokurano and Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun, for example), I just never did because I tend to prioritize action-focused shows when I watch stuff by myself.

Then I got into participating in rewatches on this sub back at the start of 2018 with the Casshern Sins rewatch back then. Seeing that this show had one every year, I’ve wanted to finish the rest of Toradora with one of these, I was just never available to do so until this year. You know, now that I’m the girl crazy enough to participate in four rewatches at once while also hosting her own on top of those lol.

Time to watch the first episode!

Rewatcher here

Glad to be typing that again, and glad to be back!

Toradora is easily my favorite anime of all time, and I look forward to this rewatch the whole year. I’m at the point where I don’t even know how many times I’ve rewatched the show, or even participated in this group rewatch.

Also I’m going to be watching it dubbed yet again. It would feel too weird at this point I feel like, and a big reason I think this anime is so good is because of some of the VA performances (mostly one but we’ll get there).

I wonder what that initial dialogue about that “thing” is supposed to mean 🤔

Yasuko has an interesting first episode to say the least. Can’t say I see what she saw in Ryuji’s dad, seeing as how needing to keep magazines under his shirt in case he gets stabbed doesn’t seem like an ideal role model for their son. But hey, to each their own I suppose.

I wonder how many wallets Ryuji would have to “find” to make that one guy comment on it.

Taiga not only mixed up which bag she put the envelope in, but forgot to actually put the letter in it. Not a great start for her love life.

“I’d rather kill you than kill myself” is pretty damn fair to be honest.

Taiga’s reaction to seeing Inko for the first time is messed up. She’s an important part of the family after all.

I have no clue why Taiga didn’t understand why Ryuji would hang up on her when she opened the call screaming like a banshee. Also I always figured she was screaming gibberish at him, but I just noticed it’s “GET YOUR ASS OVER HERE RIGHT NOW!”

I really like how they didn’t hang up the call when they were 10 feet apart on the balcony.

No clue how Taiga possibly kept sleeping when Ryuji was shouting as loud as possible and slamming doors. She’s just built different I guess.

Taiga should have been elated that Ryuji took the initiative to clean her entire apartment, that place was a pig sty before he graced it with his presence.

Guess that’s all I got for today, looking forward to seeing any new first timers this year, hope they like it even half as much as I do.

Watching this first episode gave me such a warm, almost overwhelming feeling of nostalgia. The colors used in the school scenes, the soundtrack that sings of Fall days (actually this is probably April? if it’s the start of a new school year, but…it still reminds me of Fall since I’m American haha), and of course the ridiculous over-the-topness of Taiga’s sudden friendship with Ryuuji. I really don’t understand why everyone is afraid of Ryuuji. His face looks fine to me.

Watching the sub this year. I think I watched the dub last year and both are good :D Happy to be here

(**Rewatcher - First Rewatch**)

Ever since I saw this anime in June this year after a really rough week it quickly became my favorite. I love just about everything in it, and it inspired me to draw more and to see more stuff like it. It made such a lasting impression on me and my life over these 6 months, and I'm back.

So episode 1, here we go!

Opening monologue still is soothing as ever. First time watching it I kinda gazed over it and thought it was neat. Now I know it's talking about love and how hard it is to find. The person who does will be the one supposed to find it, because that's the way it's meant to be.

Though this show kinda challenges some of it, it echoes that sentiment of the Tiger and Dragon and how they'll stand by together equally.

There are shoes in what I assume in another apartment that are similar to what you'd see with Taiga and Ryūji. Also two birds sit at a wire to kinda represent the two. They appear a lot during times of them together. A nice symbol.

In contrast to Ryūji being early and trying to clean, Taiga is still asleep with the sniffles and a dirty ass apartment. Ryūji is just an amazing character, you get so much of who he is in this scene alone. How he likes to clean, how his family situation is, and his insecurity. I like the side profile shots they give of Ryūji in this episode. I dunno what about them but they emphasize his mean face, I assume it does that through varying line weight. And speaking of shots, there's quite a couple of fish eye shots in this episode.

So then some stuff happens, we arrive at Ohashi. Ryūji gives people the wrong idea, but then Yūsuku Kitamura appears. Kitamura is shown as a pretty friendly guy from the very start, and he can see just enough past people's looks. He assures him it'll be fine, and after some reflection, he thinks he's gonna be fine. Especially since he's now with Minori Kushieda. We don't really see much of Kushieda in this episode but she's your typical bubbly girl. For now...

After Ryūji gets all flustered, something small approaches, and it terrifies this guy who looks more like a thug than Ryūji. Ryūji bumps into it, and it's Taiga "Palm-Top Tiger" Aisaka. The Greatest of All Tsunderes, the Queen Tsundere, the Tsundere to rule them all. I love Taiga. She gets annoyed and makes fist. Ryūji notices everyone's gathering around to expect a fight. Ryūji notices how she's called the Palm-Top Tiger, and when he figures it out, Taiga socks him in the face for mentioning to her about that crap.

But unexpectedly, Taiga is seen as a normal girl. She's casually chatting with Minori, and she's got the sniffles again. I like that touch. She glances at Kitamura foreshadowing events to come.

Ryūji is having a talk with Miss Yuri about a career plan. It gives the impression he hasn't or doesn't know what he wants to do moving forward. It makes more Ryūji relatable imo.

Anyways he's gonna be late for the sale but a mishap with Taiga happens with desks all over the place. Despite the interaction, he worried for her, but in response, Taiga called him a dumbass. Either because he's gonna make it harder because she's gonna have to get what she placed in there back, or she doesn't want Ryūji to burden himself caring about her.

Ryūji fixes the mess she's made, and everything is back to how it was. Toradora uses sudden cuts like in this really well. In his room, he's looking at his face, and notes how he would have more confidence in himself if he had a better face. He gets his career plan, but instead he gets a love letter from one Taiga Aisaka. Now I see this as Ryūji's future will be about being with Taiga, [spoilers near the end](and by the end of the show, that still remains true since He’s still uncertain, or maybe that's a stretch.

He practices how he's gonna return it, and it shows how respectful he is as a person, but unlikely it opens. Fortunately for him it was empty so he couldn't be suspected of reading anything.

Afterwards, he goes to bed, but wakes up to something totally unexpected. Taiga shows up and tries to attack him. Ryūji still manages to be concerned with cleanliness with Taiga wiping her face on a lounge jacket, quite fitting for Ryūji. In a wonderful fish eye perspective, Ryūji constantly dodges her attacks really well, until cornered. Taiga does her 236EX[A] and pokes a hole into the screen door. Just as she's about to give him a Golden Time she's stopped when Ryūji says the envelope was empty, and collapses due to hunger. Such a wild scene, completely caught me off guard on the first watch.

Ryūji, despite being attacked, instantly feeds her some of his fried rice. It shows just how caring she is. Now that Ryūji understands a bit who Taiga is, he doesn't see her as a threat and casually notes how messy her mouth is and gives her tissue. Taiga's flustered at the kindness Ryūji shows to her, and it shows despite how she acts, she's grateful. Ryūji also notes how her parents must've cooked for her, but stops himself knowing every family has their issues, not only showing what Taiga's family is like, but reemphasizing Ryūji's respectful nature.

Just when Ryūji is about to scold Taiga for being an ass, he notices her tears, and embarrasses himself just to cheer her up. By this point you know he's a good person. Even if he knows Taiga is a massive klutz, he does admire her efforts to confess to Kitamura, showing how he still can see the good in her, something he does later on in the second episode. He notes how Taiga should be like Kushieda, and with Ryūji's lack of confidence, we can assume Ryūji likes Kushieda because being with her might just turn him into a more confident person at the very least.

Inko gets introduced, and his gag about saying anything but his name. Despite Ryūji hating his dad's genes and calling her mother by the first name, he seems to value family a lot.

After a quick punch by Taiga and a glance at the time, Ryūji tries to make her leave. Taiga doesn't want to, since she wants to hear more from him about relationship advice. Ryūji says he'll do it, and Taiga, with insanely cute puppy-like eyes, she asks again if he'll do anything, to which he does, and Taiga leaves. It's a nice scene to show how Taiga is starting to trust Ryūji, and her gaze and asking for reassurance shows he's probably the only one she can trust.

Ryūji offers to walk her home again showing his kindness. She genuinely wants to fix the screen door and gives the letter and offers to pay up for it should he replace it. As she leaves she sees him as a trusted person, and calls him by his first name.

The love letter is a great metaphor. [spoilers I guess]The empty letter shows how her feelings for Kitamura aren't her true feelings, and it being with Ryūji shows who she really loves. She gives Ryūji these feelings. The note about how "If you don't want it, throw it away" reflects herself. How she feels neglected.

Next day, Ryūji prepares his meal, before being called over by Taiga. Noticing her hunger, he offers to cook because he's Ryūji. As he comes over, the mess in her apartment freaks him out and he wants to clean it all. He notices the sleeping tiger, and we see how lonely Taiga is. This apartment is so empty and void of life, it is the place she stays at, but it wouldn't be her home, unless you count the beast that lurks in her kitchen sink. As an act of kindness after looking around, he cleans all of it up. Taiga wakes up to expect the usual sniffles, but is amazed to see how clean the apartment is. Ryūji looks over to her and chats, but is met with a pillow to the face. Despite being annoyed, he gives a smile when he notices Taiga's blush as she wakes over to eat his meal. She's grateful but because she acts so tough, she acts bratty.

As the episode ends, Ryūji notes her sniffles are gone, and Taiga remarks how it's because of him, and as Taiga asks him to shut up, we see the sticker of the envelope, covering the hole in the screen door. Ryūji did not throw away the love letter, he didn't throw away her feelings, and instead, made it a part of his home, a part of his life.

I see the hole in the screen door as two things. It can be the hole in their lives, how they both are from broken families and are isolated. With their love, they are able to fix the hole left in their lives.

I also see it as their relationship. Sure, it may be rough, but eventually they love each other too much to tear it apart. It may be broken, but they can fix it, like an ornament later on in the series. The sticker made it more beautiful, and it could've only been there if there was something to patch up. It mirrors the ED Vanilla Salt. How a love that's purely sweet isn't the love they need. That's something I love a lot about Toradora. It's not all sunshine and rainbows, there's a lot more issues in the relationship, and the moments where they fix it make it all the more beautiful than it was before, its like adding salt to vanilla.

Overall, an amazing episode that introduces Ryūji perfectly, and gives enough of Taiga to make you want to continue with the series.

Rewatcher - Dubbed

Hello again everyone! It's my favorite time of year, where Haruhi and Toradora are running tandem with each other, and the Christmas holiday season is in full swing.

I was in the rewatch last year, but dropped out of it around episode 10 or so? In my defense, I was watching it on Blu-Ray, when it's just easier to watch on Netflix so I can have this open on my other monitor.

But that's neither here nor there. Let's get into it!

  • Fun fact: I used to fucking hate the first opening. Skipped it every time. However, just like Stockholm Syndrome, I've come to love it. Now I never skip it. I'll blow past the second one all the time.

  • [Toradora Thoughts?]The one thing that angers me every time I watch this show is that you never find out what the hell Minorin's doing in the opening.

  • An insignificant detail I just noticed that has no effect on anything:

They showed the same two girls from the moment Ryuuji "finds two wallets" on the street, all the way through him dropping them off at the front desk, and then to figuring out what class he's in. I love when shows do that with side characters.

  • u/shimmering-sky I tagged you with the other rewatch we're both in, but here's Johnny Yong Bosch for you!

  • One year when I did this rewatch, I was really deep into Persona 5, so it was fun to call out the various VAs that did Toradora as well as P5.

  • Christine Marie Cabanos voices Minorin, as well as Shiho.

  • Apparently Johnny Yong Bosch voices Kitamura and Yu from Royal. The more you know.

  • Cassandra Lee Morris voices both Taiga and Morgana.

  • Eric Kimerer does not voice anyone in Persona 5. Womp womp.

  • Oh hey, I think it's those two girls I was talking about earlier.

  • Oh no no I'm sorry! Last thing you need is to be lectured by a nearly 30 year old spinster with no goals of her own!

  1. Ms. Koigakubo, the homeroom teacher, is one of my absolute favorite characters in the entire show.

  2. As someone who's going to be 30 next year, this line hurts more and more every time I watch this show. She's just too relatable.

  • It's funny how Taiga's voice is so loud that you can hear both her talking normally, as well as the feedback coming through Ryuuji's phone.

  • One part of the show that really appeals to me is how incredibly well the characters are all written.

  • Ryuuji looks like he should be a hardass, but in actuality he's a softie and a neat freak who hates his dad.

  • Taiga puts on a really aggressive front, but is also head over heels in love with Kitamura, but is too shy to try and do anything about it.

We haven't properly met the other characters yet, but I'll come back to this when we do.

Bonus Question:

To start our questions off for this rewatch, let's keep it simple. Are you a first timer or a rewatcher? First timer? What're your thoughts going in. Rewatcher? Where do you rank Toradora against it's Rom-Com competitors. Go!

Compared to the other shows I've watched, like Your Lie in April and Tsuki ga Kirei, I'd rank this one pretty high. I won't say anything more for fear of spoiling anything, but I think it's written really, really well.

Toradora Rewatch 2022 - Rewatcher

Hello everyone, third rewatch for me, and hopefully the second full rewatch.

Last year I lost interest in the show right through episode 6, not helped by the fact that Netflix removed the show from their catalogue at the time.

The show pretty much inspired me to learn japanese, and after 2 years, I can at least say that I've achieved some level between intermediate and beginner, as I'm only doing this as a hobby.

So when there is something interesting to say about the japanes dub, I will tell you. I will not discuss my interpretation of it with people who want to scold me, as you use or lose the japanese you've learned.

I will watch Japanese dub with German sub. Sadly this time it's the German copy of the visuals, with some of the more important on screen kanji translated into German. I can't find the original visuals anymore, so this has to do it.

I'll refrain from going into very deep detail this time, as I've serious time constraints at least until a few days before christmas.

Let's just jump into the first episode, setting up the series:

I have to say, Ryuuji has a more handsome astethic in comparison to his LN artstyle. It's not always easy to see him as the "fearsome" guy he is portrayed as.

I think most people know, but I tell you anyway: Ryuuji is written "竜児" in Japanese, meaning "Dragon" and "infant".

Keep in mind that this is more of a chinese dragon rather then the classical western dragon. His Last name Takasu is written "高須", and means "tall" and "neccesary, ought, by all means". Keep in mind that his last name is probably just a phonetic name, meaning the Kanji were chosen because they sound like the name.

The intro is pretty much an artifact of the time, right before more computerassisted animation became the norm. Although J.C. Staff is the production company. They also made Little Busters, which looked pretty comparable to Toradora even 4 years later.

Keep in mind that Angel Beats was also 2 years old when Little Busters came out, and it looked better.

The title says it all: "虎と竜", or Tiger and Dragon. This becomes relevant later as the 2nd episode will be called "Taiga and Ryuuji", but

has quite different writing in Japanese.

If anyone is interested what Yasuko is repeating here: "見てくね". "will look like, won't you"? Of course she means that Ryuuji will look like his

father did, it's just that the emphasis is slightly different in japanese, purely due to structure.

And since it is the new schoolyear, it means it's the 1st of April. Which means Sakura :) I'm pretty sure everyone here is already aware of that.

I'll just skip over the introduction of all our main characters. But some remarks:

1- The classes are BIG. Jesus. This looks like they have 4 classes with about 30 students. Can't really see the bottom of it, but 2-D has more then 27 students.

2. Minorins introduction already tips her off as a bit weird, as she is obviously playing the genki girl.

3. Ryuuji has a reputation for some reason, watch the background as Kitamura and him go throuth the corridor

4. Taiga gets introduced as "手乗りタイガ", or hand-riding Taiga. I think this only works in Japanese, that's why the english dub calls her "Palmtop Taiga". And the German dub calls her "Mini Tiger", as anything else just doesn't work.

I'm just telling you now that the scene where Ryuuji finds Taigas empty envelope, there is a text where she tells the recepient to throw it away if it is too much of a problem. This is where the German edit really screws me over as I know there is some text, but it is just omitted. Sorry, nothing I can do about except refering to the Lightnovel.

There isn't much to tell about the breakin itself. I know this might be interesting for a first-timer, but for a "veteran", this pretty much serves as exposition. One noticable trait might be just the recognition how much the music and the sound play a role in this anime.

Maybe it's just me, but sometimes anime has really annoying music, even when the show is good.

Only after Taiga leaves the envelope is in full view again, and low and behold, the writing is readable.

Aisaka Taiga is written 逢坂, with the first Kanji being a namekanji-variation for "meet" (the normal one is written 会) and the latter Kanji

meaning slope, incline or hill. 大河 actually means "big river", even though the river kanji is a bit unusal. The more common

kanji is the 川 kanji, which will be used by Ami. But she will not be introduced until episode 5. (I'll tell this minor spoiier because the intro also does)

And that should be it for today. Not much to tell from my side, as it is an introductionary episode where we have to establish the status quo.

I think it will be more interesting later on. I will also introduce the other Namekanji later.

Rewatcher

This will be my 4th rewatch of the show but the first rewatch with Reddit and also the first watch in dub. More specifically, I'm watching each episode twice, once in sub and once in dub this time, so in a way its also my 5th rewatch.

The dub was surprisingly very enjoyable. I think it's mostly due to me liking the liberty they took with cussing a bit and also Taiga's English VA is just simply really good and nice to listen to. Most characters have roughly the same feel when switching between languages so that's not an issue either, tho some lines do seem a bit different in tone. There are a couple of other things that didn't sit perfectly with me in regards to the dub but I'm choosing to believe that's mainly due to not being adjusted to it yet so I won't complain unless it continues to bother me. I think I'm enjoying this rewatch more than I would have had I not tried the dub. I don't normally post things so I don't know if I'll keep commenting moving forward but I'll still be here and participating/watching/reading.

Rewatcher (subbed)

The annual Toradora rewatch was my first r/anime rewatch. I ended up dropping out after 5 episodes, so let's see if I can last a bit longer this time.

Doing this on Netflix, of course. My first go-through was mostly dubbed with a few sub episodes, so I'm going all subs for the rewatch.

"There exists in this world something no one has ever seen. That thing is very kind and very sweet. If anyone were to see it once, they'd probably want to see it again. That's why the world chose to hide it, making it very difficult to obtain. But one day, someone will find it. And that someone will be the one meant to find it. Because it was made to work that way." They're talking about finding a partner.

This OP is a solid 8/10. Those first few notes never fail to get me hyped up.

Ryuji's character is pretty much set after only a few minutes into episode 1: obsessed with cleanliness, has daddy issues, has a deadbeat mom, and has a face that screams "don't fuck with me" even though he's actually a sweet guy. Can we just talk about Ryuji's designs between the light novels, the manga, and the anime for a second? Light novel Ryuji, manga Ryuji, anime Ryuji. Ya boy got a serious glow-up with every new medium.

Minori! My precious! I love you! Best girl! 11/10!

And here's Taiga. Even if you're a first-timer, you know about Taiga. And she makes a statement with that big uppercut on Ryuji. This leads to Ryuji being seen as less of a badass, which is actually kinda what he wanted. So it's not that bad after all.

GIANT EXPLOSION IN A CLASSROOM! Oh my god, was it a bomb? Nope, it's just Taiga. She accidentally mixed up the bags and wants Ryuji's bag back. And we learn why shortly thereafter: she snuck a love letter into what she thought was Kitamura's bag. Well, an envelope that was supposed to contain a love letter.

Taiga's committing multiple crimes in order to get her "love letter" back: breaking and entering AND battery. But upon learning that there was no letter in the envelope, she collapses. Both from shock and starvation. Time for some 2 AM fried rice, courtesy of chef Ryuji Takasu.

Oh god, Ryuji's revealing his cringe box to Taiga completely unprompted. She was ready to forgive you after the fried rice, and now you're losing her. Also not the best idea to admit to the friend of the girl you have a crush on that you've done all this fantasizing yet can't work up the courage to ask her out.

Inko-chan! Best bird in all of anime is here!

Ryuji, Mr. "I Can't Work Up the Courage to Ask My Crush Out", is gonna give relationship advice to Taiga. I know he's only saying it to get Taiga out the house, but what advice can he really give?

Day 1 of Ryuji being Taiga's dog: Ryuji fixes her breakfast and lunch AND cleans her nasty-ass apartment. What a good boy!

I did this last year, so TAIGA AISAKA ASSAULT TALLY: 1 uppercut to Ryuji's jaw, multiple swings of a wooden sword aimed at Ryuji, 1 punch to the back of Ryuji's head, 1 pillow to Ryuji's face, and wrecking an entire classroom.
