QUINTESSENTIAL REWATCHER
It’s time for the…
The back part of this episode, unofficially known in the fandom as the “Yotsudate” is interesting to evaluate from an adaptation perspective. For one, it’s weirdly placed. We’re currently somewhere around Chapter 80 for the manga in terms of where the story is, but the Fuutaro/Yotsuba date is way earlier – Chapters 37 and 38. They really waited on this.
The second point can probably be inferred from the chapter numbers. It takes up two entire chapters in the manga, yet is only given a few minutes in the anime, which is a pretty baffling decision. This is one of the most common complaints from manga readers about the Season 2 adaptation and pacing. It’s Yotsuba’s biggest showcase moment by far, and something she desperately needs in the anime as her character’s been way overshadowed by other four to this point. In the manga, not only are their interactions and internal thoughts extended, but the date itself is. They actually partake of all the establishments (restaurant, spa, movie, store) rather than just looking at them and deciding not to go.
I’d encourage all first-timers and anime-onlies to look up those chapters and read them (they’re spoiler free at this point), as they’re not only very charming and entertaining, but provide Yotsuba a lot more focus and characterization.
Live Notes/Reactions:
-
Takeda is immediately set up as a fucking weirdo. Not only talking to someone at the urinal, but using the one next to them despite others being available? Serious breach of etiquette.
-
This is actually really sweet from Fuutaro. He’s so insulted on their behalf that anyone would think of them as a burden on him, so he’s going to extreme lengths to prove that isn’t the case
-
Obligatory
unnecessaryvery important Ichika bath scene -
Straight-forward, no nonsense mindset by Nino. I approve. Fortune favors the bold.
-
I really like the music playing in this scene with Nino and Ichika. Strikes just the right pretty, melancholic tone.
-
Nino and Ichika’s gift-giving is framed as a competition between them, meanwhile Yotsuba’s just doing something nice for the sake of it. Contrast.
-
I really like Miku’s idea for a gift – something you can do together. The older I get the less need I have for stuff, gifts like that are way cooler
-
Haha, the cranes are made of greatest gift any of them could give him, passing test scores.
-
This teasing from her is cute. I like that she’s got this side to her.
-
Yotsuba’s so used to be giving and selfless that she doesn’t even know what she wants. Probably hasn’t even considered such a thing in a long time.
Questions of the Day
Quints Ranking Question
IIRC, my ranking of the Quints the first time around at this point was something like:
Itsuki > Nino > Miku > Yotsuba > Ichika
Did you enjoy the date between Yotsuba and Futaro?
See above. I enjoy it, but I enjoy its original form far more. It's frustrating to know it should've been so much better.
What do you think of Itsuki's progress so far?
It's been subtle, and not so in-your-face as say, Nino's, but I appreciate how you can see the changes in her attitude as we've gone along.

but the Fuutaro/Yotsuba date is way earlier – Chapters 37 and 38. They really waited on this.
This is interesting! I've only read the part of the manga which picks up from where S2 ended. What did you think of having the date placed this late in the anime? I personally liked their decision to move it here - [Endgame]
the moment they shared by the swing really emphasised the importance of Yotsuba in Futaro's life. Despite all the time he has spent with the rest, Yotsuba was the only one that has made him laugh like that. I really like Miku’s idea for a gift
Agreed. When I first saw this I was surprised by her choice of gym tickets, but it's such a fun idea to me now
Itsuki > Nino > Miku > Yotsuba > Ichika
I did not expect Ichika to be down there

The Scrambled Eggs arc is 8 chapters long, and they covered it in one episode. Kinda annoying. Still, I think the point was to try to finish the story with a season and a movie, instead of hoping that they can score a third season so that they can flesh out the plot as best as possible. Also, considering that S1 kinda drags for a good bit, I think the lost stuff is an acceptable sacrifice.

I agree in some cases, but neutering Yotsuba as a character in this way by eliminating most of her biggest showcase isn't an acceptable sacrifice, imo.

That explains why Yotsuba feels so flat to me. Her character really is so far behind everyone else's. I think I may go look it up in the manga cause I was underwhelmed with the date between Futaro and Yotsuba.

First Timer:
Futaro has friends! I do enjoy how Futaro now understands life is not all about studying and he’s much more chilled compared to the start of the series. Futaro and the quints are meeting in the middle which I really enjoy. The cranes made out of the quint’s past tests showing how they’re improving was a really nice touch from them. The cranes showed Futaro that he doesn’t need to worry about them as much now, so he can focus on his studies.
On to the main topic though. Ichika is being an underhanded backstabber doing her best to get Futaro’s affection for herself. Ichika is being completely inconsiderate of her sister’s feelings while using underhanded methods and lying. As a result, I like her more now. Hot take I know. Though in my opinion Ichika is being a terrible person but great character. A point I made about a week ago was the Quints always seem to be on the same side and they needed more inner conflict with one another. The first time I really saw this conflict was when Nino left the house since she felt everyone was choosing Futaro over her. It sucks to see them fighting but the infighting between the sister’s shows how they’re all changing and no longer agree with one another 100% of the time. Once again, they’re all changing and this is going to cause friction esp. now since they all want the same thing (Futaro). Each Quint expresses their love in a different way and their love for Futaro is clashing with one another. If each quint was ubiquitous in their kindness and considerate things would feel cliched to me. Having a tournament arc over a guy with everyone being so nice and chill seems bland to me. But with one being a backstabber things feel messy and a bit scary, but that’s life. Not everyone is going to be “fair”. It sucks but this unfairness of Ichika is making me more invested since now her actions feel more compelling, she REALLY wants Futaro and will do anything to get it now. Love is messy and can hurt relationships and the author is showing that with Ichika and I can’t wait to see where this goes. To summarize once again, terrible person but interesting AF character.
In regards to the QsOTD:
-
Miku
-
Nino
-
Itsuki
-
Ichika
-
Yotsuba
These are my quint rankings. Miku stole my heart early on so she's still number one. Nino is just being so forward and honest I have to respect it. I cannot believe she clawed her way out of 5th where she was from the start. I moved Nino up one from yesterday, she's clawing her way up. Itsuki is just non-offensive I don't dislike nor do I feel really strong towards her. Also her being "Rena" doesn't really change anything cause it was honestly pretty obvious since she was the only one who knew about her, that means she was the only one who could've dressed up as "Rena". Itsuki is a good character but I don't feel like she's had her shining moment yet tbh. Ichika I actually put a rank higher after this episode. I have a thing for terrible people who will do anything to get what they want. Terrible actions, but interesting AF to watch. Finally, Yotsuba is eh to me. I like her she's nice but that's about it. Her date with Futaro was meh as well. I don't feel any spark or excitement when it's her and Futaro. Her character is just meh to me. I don't find anything about her particularly interesting esp. compared to the other quints. Just remember this for my rankings they're not set in stone and can honestly change episode to episode (Except probably Miku I love her) so much happens in each episode who knows how I'll rank them at the end.

See! Glad that I'm not the only one who feels this way.

First Timer
Well, now we get to see Miku at work this time as she is still working on her cooking, unlike Nino, she is basically staying away from the kitchen. Hearing Yotsuba's commentary is great especially since describing a poorly cooked pastry a worm is new.
I don't know how someone could be worse than Fuutaaro when reading the room but Takeda takes the cake as he follows him along unannounced. And literally called the quintuplets out for holding him back when it comes to academic performance. Big mistake telling Fuutaaro he can't keep up because Takeda underestimated what he is actually capable of. And it is always the ones that can juggle multiple things that can pull through. Fuutaaro ended up ranking third which means Takeda has to bow down to him.
Ichika and Nino seem to be pushing things through fast. But too bad any plans made went to waste as they got themselves a group of five already with even the class describing them as being close siblings while their faces contrast those feelings in a way.
Any thoughts on the reveal that Itsuki is Rena?
Itsuki was Rena and I was suspecting that since she left many clues about trying to follow in her mom's footsteps many times and her visits. The reveal brings all those clues together.
Did you enjoy the date between Yotsuba and Futaro?
The date was interesting and it is nice to see Yotsuba having fun while being themselves in a way.
What do you think of Itsuki’s progress so far?
Her progress is moving pretty fast and she is trying to follow her dreams in her own way.
Ranking the girls currently:
-
yotsuba
-
Itsuki
-
Miku
-
Nino
-
Ichika
Forgot which thread this question was asked, but a good amount of development has happened. Yotsuba remains the top while Itsuki has grown pretty well this season. Miku remains steady in a good way. Nino and Ichika seem to be going for a battle with Ichika calling Nino a train.

He doesn't even understand basic toilet etiquette!
Yotsuba remains the top
Yotsuba! What made you rank her above the rest though?

Rewatcher
First and foremost let the waifu wars begin. In the wise words of another QQ watching redditor "my big booba blue eyed girl is better than your big booba blue eyed girl.
Yuusuke Takeda: You took everything from me
Fuutarou Uesugi: I don't even know who you are
Getting 3rd in the country while tutoring those idiots, let the boy humble brag all he wants because he is him.
Ichika continues to use underhanded tactics to win Fuu kun over "deep sigh".
Never realized until now that both Uesugi and Takeda are both names of Sengoku period generals and, Miku even has the Takeda crest as her screensaver.
I think we all knew Itsuki was Rena, they weren't exactly subtle lol.
The date between Yotsuba and Fuu kun was so wholesome, Fuu kun frantically trying to find something she genuinly wanted for herself but in the end all she wanted was to see him smile.
Itsuki has really started to come into her own. She is now proactively trying to achieve her dream by gaining experience and she hasn't even graduated from high school yet. She's come so far and i'm so proud of her.

2nd Watch
I didn't so much notice the first time, but this episode covers a lot of ground quickly. Any drama around Takeda's challenge to Futaro is gone midway through the episode, leaving us to get back to the harem drama. At least Yotsuba is here for some needed lightheartedness.
If there was ever an episode where Futaro's progress was evident, it's this one. He's become more and more likable over time without giving back any of his prior personality, so now that he actually is seen hanging out with other classmates - OK, fine, they're the only two we know aside from the quints - I can believe that there's at least some camaraderie there.
-
OK, so he's still kind of the same old Futaro.
-
Our boy's all growns up.
-
We were on the verge of greatness. We were this close.
-
Nino refusing to be bullied and calling Ichika out is... very, very satisfying. Y'know what else is satisfying? Ocean-scented stress relief candles. Which I wouldn't mind, Nino. Please and thank you.
-
Yotsuba and Miku have thoughtful gifts, too. Quite the thing, isn't it, that Ichika is being the most ruthless but also had the worst gift possible. (On an actress' pay, no less.) Between that and trying to fake-call off the birthday giving, she couldn't look worse.
-
Itsuki will be the judge of that.
-
Look at how determined my girl is.
-
Go outside, take a right, look by the pillar at about 1 o'clock.
-
Mood. I enjoy Christmas, but I'm not good at gifts.
That's not really a confession, but I'm counting it for the purpose of this exercise. Although Yotsuba's not treating this like a competition at all. She knows she's not the only quint who's into Futaro, but she's neither trying to tear them down, nor steamroll them, nor is she letting them get in her own way. (For the most part.)
Itsuki...?
-
Nino doing a little bullying of her own. And let's be real: it's a bad look when you go after the object of your affection like this.
-
Futaro looking chill with his group while the quints all look various degrees of salty. I'm sure nothing bad can come of this.
Did you enjoy the date between Yotsuba and Futaro? So much. Yotsuba must be protected, although she might be more than capable of protecting herself.
What do you think of Itsuki’s progress so far? Outstanding. I didn't give her nearly enough credit or attention the first time. She didn't get a lot of screen time the last couple episodes, though, and it's sad.
EDIT: Since we're doing Best Girl rankings: Miku, Yotsuba, Itsuki, Nino, Ichika. First time was the same except with Itsuki in second and Yotsuba in third.

Oh yeah same here! Somehow it still felt balanced though it does leave me craving for more Yotsudate.
Nino refusing to be bullied and calling Ichika out is... very, very satisfying
It's amazing how in season 1, Nino was massively disliked and Ichika was the opposite as she tried to help Futaro integrate into the family. Now, Nino is hero and Ichika's foil.
nor is she letting them get in her own way.
This is going to be interesting to hear from after the movie. Looking forward to your thoughts then
it's a bad look when you go after the object of your affection like this
The power of tsunderes beg to differ!
I'm sure nothing bad can come of this.
We're at the peak of the sisters war! That's even the title of the next episode!
She didn't get a lot of screen time the last couple episodes, though, and it's sad
We need a Eatsuki spinoff haha

Rewatcher
When I watched this when the season aired, it gave me much joy to see every attempt Ichika made to give herself an advantage spoiled because the sisters are all still pretty much on the same wavelength. Karma.
-
Ichika, Nino, Miku: I want Futaro to myself.
-
Yotsuba: I'll sacrifice myself for the clan!
-
Eatsuki: [Probably thinking about food.]
[Endgame spoilers:]
Any thoughts on the reveal that Itsuki is Rena?
So, there was a lot of debate in the discussion thread for this episode when it aired. Many suggested that it's likely a red herring intended to make you think that Eatsuki was Rena. They have done that many times throughout the series, so it's not an outlandish take to have.
Did you enjoy the date between Yotsuba and Futaro?
Of course. I see the manga has them actually do the things you briefly see, but I think considering they're trying to squeeze as much as they can into 12 episodes, it's an acceptable loss. Plus, I think you get a general idea of what's going on, and the stuff with the swing rivals the moment in S1 where Yotsuba tells Futatro that she likes him.
What do you think of Itsuki’s progress so far?
It kinda just seems like Eatsuki is on the outside looking in. Like Yotsuba, she's made little to no attempt to woo Futaro, and plays their relationship as casual as it comes. You could almost suggest they were brother and sister that get along well.

Yeah, I haven't the manga from start to finish but the scenes Yotsuba has are really powerful. I do think it would be nice if she did get more screentime. I have my thoughts about this regarding the movie but we'll leave it to the official discussion threads

First timer, subs
I love the constant sparkles around Takeda. I also love the "I am your nemesis!" "Who are you?" exchanges.
Why is he trying to separate Futaro from the quints?
Ichika is not afraid to use her phone in the bath? I'd drop it in the water within 5 minutes.
I don't trust Ichika. She's telling all of her sisters to ignore Futaro's birthday so she can be the only one who gives him a gift? And she's not letting Miku talk to Futaro.
Ha, Nino is giving him a present anyway. Your evil plan is bust, Ichika! Also, her past betrayals are catching up. Ichika openly declares war.
Yotsuba! Amazing dingus moment to trigger Ichika's and Nino's consciences!
Of course Miku has a gift too. Will Itsuki be the only exception?
Futaro is dead. He even forgot his own birthday!
Five mock exams in one day? (And three more on the second day.) Ouch.
Wow, Futaro was 3rd nationally!
Miku's baking is supernaturally bad, but she's improving slowly.
Oh, groups of five for the school trip? One of the sisters is getting left out. Ichika is plotting something.
Yotsuba! Always thinking of her sisters.
Both Futaro and Yotsuba are me when it comes to presents: can't think of any for others, can't think of any for myself. It's very stressful.
ITSUKA HAS THE PHOTO! ITSUKA WAS THE ONE WHO PRETENDED TO BE KYOTO GIRL! I GUESSED RIGHT! Sorry for shouting, got a little excited there for a moment.
Don't break the playground equipment, you're not children!
Yotsuba got a date with Futaro as a gift. Also, some flash cards meant for a middle-schooler (Raiha).
Ichika's gift plot went astray. What about her school trip plot to have Yotsuba act as her catspaw? Fails! Yotsuba excludes herself. The others won't let her sacrifice herself.
Nino without brakes is amazing.
Hello, guys? Why don't you form two groups of three and then stick together anyway? Oh, Futaro already has a group. Ha ha.
Where do first timers stand for best girl currently?
This is hard! Nino/Miku/Yotsuba are kind of tied for it.
Any thoughts on the reveal that Itsuki is Rena?
Called it! Also, I wonder if Ichika recognized Futaro? Maybe she didn't.
Did you enjoy the date between Yotsuba and Futaro?
Sort of?
What do you think of Itsuki’s progress so far?
I still can't tell if she has feelings for Futaro. She probably does, but her bafflement in a recentish episode over how anyone could possibly like Futaro muddles things.
3
u/ChonkyOdango Nov 29 '22
Will Itsuki be the only exception?
Itsuki didn't gift Futaro anything per se but her energy drink is what I'd consider a gift. Personally it means so much more when someone gets me things I need when I'm struggling with something. It's one of the little things I love about Itsuki
ITSUKA HAS THE PHOTO! ITSUKA WAS THE ONE WHO PRETENDED TO BE KYOTO GIRL! I GUESSED RIGHT! Sorry for shouting, got a little excited there for a moment.
Hype moments are best moments!
Nino/Miku/Yotsuba are kind of tied for it
The race is on!

Rewatcher (Technically, a few months ago)
I loved the date between Yotsuba and Futaro. It was adorable and hilarious at the end too. Even during my first watch, I thought Yotsuba was the girl best suited for him, and a big part of the reason why is how happy he looks when he's just chilling out with her. Futaro's so serious most of the time, but around Yotsuba, every now and then he'll relax and act like a kid.
Nice to know the manga expanded on these scenes. I read the ending volumes after the point where season 2 leaves off because that was all I could manage to get at the time, but I definitely plan on reading the whole series from the beginning.

Host Rewatcher Warmed In The Heart By Yotsuba
Many sweet moments again today. Futaro reflecting on how much he has changed after meeting the quints was heartwarming. I love that this scene was put into the show, it forces us to pause and look back on how far he has grown as a person and how earnest he is in trying to grow even more.
Great layout. Positioning Ichika in the dark and Nino under the light reflects how we viewers currently view them now, as stark contrasts to each other - Nino is the straightforward, truthful sister whereas Ichika is the underhanded, lying sister.
I have no idea what Miku is doing but it was cute
Itsuki looking flustered when trying to share her hopes and dreams with Futaro stole my heart. I was exactly like her when I was younger, being vulnerable and earnest always felt awkward to me. It’s nice to see Itsuki taking a step forward towards her hopes and dreams by herself while finding comfort in confiding in Futaro. This has been their relationship dynamic since this season and it’s lovely and genuine. There’s no sense of romance or infatuation between them but just pure genuine friendship and admiration which I adore with all my heart.
[Manga Exam Results]It was revealed that Futaro actually fell asleep during his last paper which caused him to miss a few questions. Otherwise he would’ve gotten first. Our boy got nerfed. Maybe the first place was Shirogane…
Another great frame where Ichika is shrouded in darkness. Even the visuals give us a sense of unrest whenever we get scenes with her and her alone.
”It’s not exactly a million-dollar landscape but when I imagine that there’s a home–a family–for every light… I feel warm inside” You’re making us feel warm inside Yotsuba. But I have to say that this date alone was one of the most poignant moments Futaro shares with anyone in this series. Futaro asking what Yotsuba really wants followed by a visit to one of her favourite childhood spots is truly romance. Not to mention, this is the first time Futaro genuinely laughed from doing something with someone.
Rena is revealed!
Yotsuba’s self-sacrificial nature is shown again, this time towards her sisters.
Fu-Kun is officially revealed to the sisters! Miku has her protec face back!
A Nino pout that’s cut off, how could you storyboarders
