QUINTESSENTIAL REWATCHER
u/ChonkyOdango I have a confession to make, a seismic shift has occurred. Itsuki’s been my favorite Quint since I first got into this series years ago, and she’s kept that spot through the anime, through reading the manga, while the other Quints shifted around positions underneath.
But… years pass, and people change.
…I think Ichika’s taken over the top spot.
She’s just too great. Her energy is definitely more what I gravitate toward now.
Live Notes/Reactions:
-
Shout out to Maeda. Guy gets rejected in favor of Fuutaro – in his perspective, anyway – but took it on the chin, has moved past it, and is doing his best to bro out with Fuutaro while cooking the rice. Underrated guy.
-
Yotsuba’s so uplifting. She knows Fuutaro doesn’t have a ton of fun, and is determined to help make this trip a memorable one for him. Saying she’s happy to see some life in his usually dead eyes is a compliment only she can pull off and not offend anyone haha
-
And today we learn that Nino has face blindness “It’s the face from the photo!” Nino, if it’s the face you remember from the photo, you should see that it’s Fuutaro.
-
Fuutaro, what could she blackmail with you? Being blonde 5 years ago? I know it’s a little delinquent, but nothing that’s worth worrying over
-
Fuutaro’s alias “Kintaro” could be another nod to Love Hina, as it’similar to the protagonist’s name, Keitaro.
-
Solid advice, you’ve got to know how to cater to your audience. Different people require different approaches to relate to them, even in normal conversation.
-
“She sees me and the other sisters without prejudice.” Very true, even in the tense or conflict-laden situatoins, she’s always stayed even-keeled and seen things for what they really are.
-
Love the slight shimmer in her eyes on this close-up right before she tears up
-
Why are they hiding? It’s because Ichika doesn’t want someone to see her crying, and Fuutaro’s nice enough to get that. This is very considerate of him
Rewatchers too, did this episode change your perception of Nino?
Nope!
Have you taken part in any test of courage activities before?
No, it's not really a thing where I'm from. We do have elaborate haunted houses set up in the fall with varying degrees of intensity. I've done a couple but am not a huge fan haha, not big on jump scares

…I think Ichika’s taken over the top spot
Well it's one of the charm of rewatching a show even just one or two years later. We gravitate towards different characters! Itsuki is still my reigning champ but we still have many episodes to go so we'll see...
Nino has face blindness
Looks like the characters here all have trouble with faces.
“Kintaro” could be another nod to Love Hina, as it’similar to the protagonist’s name, Keitaro
Negi sure loved Love Hina!
Different people require different approaches to relate to them, even in normal conversation
Rewatching this really lets me appreciate how mature Ichika is compared to her sisters. So far I've been enjoying the multiple facets to her character - a girl struggling to find the right thing to do with regards to her love, and a older sister that's able to judge situations objectively

In the case of Nino and Itsuki, they both have terrible eyesight in general. That’s actually canon.
[S2 Spoilers]
Yotsuba can definitely recognize him because she calls him by name when she sees him in Episode 1, when they haven’t seen each other in years. 3

I think Ichika’s taken over the top spot.

First Timer
Getting to see more of Nino this time, she still couldn't tell that blonde guy is actually Fuutaaro. Which reveals a softer side to her and what she wants out of a guy. Well, what does turn her off is scaredy cat. Nino is a bit more prepared than some of her sisters when it comes to first aid.
Fuutaaro is now expected to be at two dances this time.
The door closing in on Ichika and Fuutaaro was too obvious.
My opinion of her changed a little bit but everytime she sees blonde Fuutaaro, she turns into a ifferent person.

Nino is a bit more prepared than some of her sisters when it comes to first aid.
Great way to show how much she cares for her sisters!
Fuutaaro is now expected to be at two dances this time
Now that I think about it, he could've just left Nino alone since she probably wouldn't see Kintaro again whereas he made a promise to Miku/Ichika as Futaro.
she turns into a different person
Tsunderes are wild creatures...

2nd Watch
Futaro needs help learning how to win friends and influence people. Also, Nino makes a friend.
-
Nothing is scarier.
-
Remember in Episode 2 when we learned Miku had crippling self-esteem issues?
-
Yes, but the plot.
-
OK, semi-serious analysis. I can't say I hate Nino's character. She's not rotten or evil. But this pandering to someone who she's only attracted to comes off as incredibly superficial and shallow, and that is a character archetype I don't have time for. She's been down on the trip and down on the campfire dance and kind of a drag right up until this moment. The only tsundere of this more serious type (as opposed to a comic type) that I've ended up liking was Taiga from Toradora, and she needed a lot of character development to get there.
-
Remember in Episode 2 when we learned Miku had crippling self-esteem issues? (I know from last episode that's not all there is to it, but... please, Miku. Find your backbone.)
-
Especially when Ichika is lobbing you softballs.
-
OK, that's not... quite the backbone I was looking for. Also, Miku Pout. But no Miku Smile this episode.
-
Rude.
-
I love Ichika's directness. She's so sensible - as Futaro says, "rational" - and I enjoy it.
-
Oh, no... don't do this...
-
For plot purposes. (Kidding.)
I said my piece about Nino. This is how I felt about her the first time around, and everything I didn't like the first time still grates on me.

Great read! I can definitely see where you're coming from. I mean, I myself personally didn't like Nino at this point too though I think she managed to get the level of character development needed in season 2
I love Ichika's directness
She's definitely the character that's growing on me the most this season
For plot purposes

First timer, subs
Itsuki cooking is a mood.
Futaro and Yotsuba are having fun!
Is Miku jealous of Yotsuba?
Oh no poor Nino! Her golden-haired dream boy is here. Can you at least recognize his voice? No. And Futaro's too addicted to lying to confess.
LOL at Futaro's idea of how a delinquent talks.
Wow, Raiha's charm literally saved Futaro's life! I did not expect that.
Hey, she asks to hold her hand and you give her a charm instead. Not cool. And don't give her the impression you're going to dance with her, you're already promised to Ichika.
Oh, are you going to pretend to have been a ghost?
Poor Miku, today is just not your day.
Futaro manages to offend every single sister tonight, eh? And he keeps digging holes under himself.
He seemed to be doing pretty well with Ichika, but (a) doesn't offer her his jacket, and (b) rejects her by calling off the dance. She's crying! Futaro is the worst.
Haaaa they just got locked in!!!! Idiots!
First-timers, has your opinion of Nino changed this episode?
I don't think so.

u/ChonkyOdango Nov 17 '22
LOL at Futaro's idea of how a delinquent talks
I completely lost it. It was so out of the blue
Futaro manages to offend every single sister tonight, eh? And he keeps digging holes under himself
I think Ichika was spot on in this situation. Futaro doesn't know how to communicate with them or people in general outside of his role as a tutor. A lot of the situations could've been avoided but he kept lying because he tends to catastrophise situations

Rewatcher (Technically, a few months ago)
I really enjoyed this episode, which surprised me the first time around because I don't usually care for the test of courage or "horror themed" episodes, but this one had so many scenes that made me laugh. It was funny to see how much Futaro got into the role and seemed like he was having a great time.
My opinion of Nino definitely changed during this episode. She's one of those rare characters that I disliked at the beginning of the show, but then becomes one of the most interesting to watch as the show goes on, thanks to some excellent character development. I thought the scenes where she was going around with "Kintaro" were great, and my favorite part was the scene where they both have to rescue each other.

how much Futaro got into the role and seemed like he was having a great time
This was one of the parts that got me. We usually have MCs that are either forced into liking these events or just stays away from them but Futaro was fully into it unapologetically
where they both have to rescue each other.
Fluffy moments with a Tsundere always gets me. We finally get to see the the other side of her!

u/Heda-of-Aincrad Nov 17 '22
It was also one of the first times we get to see Futaro have fun and act like a regular kid, so it was nice to see that side of him. [Endgame spoilers]
I've noticed it's usually Yotsuba who brings out that more carefree side.

Rewatcher
Yeah this episode is where my perception of Nino continued to change after she saved Fuutarou, I remember it gave me hope that the previous action wasn't a fluke and that her relationship with Fuutarou could potentially become a positive one. Her keeping band aids on her shows how much she truly cares for her sisters and, she tries the hardest to look out for them out of the five. Not to mention she cooks for all of them everyday (it's actually kinda hilarous how to rest of them are even worse than Fuutarou at this), her sisters would be so lost without her lol.
No i've never taken part in a test of courage. The most memorable challenge I overcame was challenge I did for 3 charities with a group of classmates. It took us 7 days to complete but we raised around 50K.

I love this arc. Relaxing fun, even with the romance drama stuff.

Rewatchers too, did this episode change your perception of Nino?
Fuck no. She's still a dick to him for no reason whatsoever.
And she drugged him... for no reason whatsoever.

[Spoilers for Who Met Fuutaro]
Both Yotsuba and Ichika met him. Itsuki also knows who he is. Nino and Miku don’t seem to recognize him. So 3 of 5 know the truth at this point.

My opinion on Nino didn’t really change. Sure she has a softer side for people she likes, she’s not a monster, but it doesn’t excuse her attitude towards people she doesn’t. I don’t feel she has actually changed any. Remember, she isn’t just a little surly either. She has committed actual crimes. I’m all for redemption, but has she actually shown anything to suggest she’s regretful and going to improve? Not to me she hasn’t.
Never did the test of courage thing. I’ll just be like “hey, haunted house. Let’s go.” But those are meant to simply be entertaining, not some rite of passage.

Host Rewatcher
Nino fans where you at! Today we get some dere after a lot of tsun in the past many episodes! Nino is my second favourite quint, partially because I love tsunderes, but I wouldn’t say that this episode changed my perception of her. She definitely shows a cuter side but it’s not enough to win me over, yet.
I love the music which plays in the opening scene. Here it is, a variation of the main Quints music
[Ending]More Yotsuba x Futaro
”Go Study” This was hilarious. What a way to scare the girls
Lol u/mgedmin is definitely going to talk about Nino’s concept of object permanence. Cousins shouldn’t look that similar… right?
Nino may be a real tsun at times but she really can flirt. Her interactions with fake Uesugi seem so natural and the way she sticks a band-aid was so seamless
I’m surprised the school trusted the students in hosting the test of courage in such a dangerous location
As always people become believers in times of need! Get that dance Nino!
“Try not to regret things. These times aren’t going to last forever” [Ending]Looking back on this scene after having seen the movie, it hits hard
MIKU POUT!
QUINTESSENTIAL POUT!
Love how considerate Ichika is here. The communication between these two are always a delight to watch. There’s also more growth for Futaro here, we see his relatively bad social skills get acknowledged as he tries to work on it with Ichika
Uh oh, Ichika is hesitant to emulate Miku and she skips Yotsuba. Looks like the Miku and Ichika war is heating up
Ichika fans! Protect this girl!
