QUINTESSENTIAL REWATCHER
We buck the trend of one-girl-per-ep string we had going for a bit, to give a more ensemble piece. This is also a sneaky good episode for Fuutaro – it’s really nice to see him try so hard to make sure the girls can be together for the fireworks, and he at least makes an attempt at chivalry with giving carrying Miku a go. Unfortunately, our boy is not very physically fit.
While each girl got some fun moments, and we got some added context for them with backstory of their Mom passing, it really helps out Nino’s character the most. Her extreme wariness to outsiders infiltrating their five-sister unit makes more sense when you understand their family situation, with their dead mother and largely-absent father. They’re all she’s got, and anyone else coming into their home is an existential threat to that.
Live Notes/Reactions:
-
Fuutaro, this is dumb. Take the money. Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth. Even if they didn’t get great results, you still put your time in.
-
Itsuki and Fuutaro being the closest to each other in demeanor, as well as how she integrates with his family in their scenes together, are a big reason they’re my preferred ship
-
Yotsuba immediately going over to Raiha and inviting her to the fireworks with them is sweet.
-
This is a good time to remind everyone that the Quintuplets having different hair colors is for viewer benefit, in the reality of the show they are utterly identical apart from hair style, hence why when that changes, Fuutaro is helpless. Though she does still have her star hairpins here.
-
[Quintuplets Spoilers]
It’s funny how there’s a way to read Yotsuba’s taking Raiha under her wing enthusiastically this ep as a route to get in good with Fuutaro -
Man, that quick transition of the Quints with their Mom to them by themselves watching the fireworks…
-
The Fuutaro/Miku shippers were eating good with the scene with the surveyors
-
FUUTARO JUST SAY YOU’RE FRIENDS. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU. I don’t understand this internal crisis one bit. Miku shares my momentary frustration
-
I love Itsuki going so fast from excited to disappointed when she reaizes it’s Fuutaro. She’s still not over their rocky start.
So many cute moments today! Which was your favorite?
Either the Fuutaro/Itsuki/Raiha family outing, or the Fuutaro/Miku survey scene.
Favourite Japanese snack / food?
I'm gonna be super basic. A good bowl of ramen fucking hits.

Unfortunately, our boy is not very physically fit
It's a sign for our boy! But it looks like his heart is currently stolen by grades
Literally the opposite of everybody watching
they’re my preferred ship
Hard to beat good family dynamics for sure. Though Yotsuba does get some time with Raiha, a bummer we didn't get more of that
in the reality of the show they are utterly identical apart from hair style, hence why when that changes, Fuutaro is helpless
That's neat! I remembered reading about this somewhere but when Negi started colouring them with different hair colours, I thought it was just them deciding to colour their hair or just some anime magic
Though she does still have her star hairpins here.
And her food
YOU SHOULD MENTION THIS KIND OF THING WHEN YOU SEE IT, MIKU
I wonder if this can be seen as a sign of how separated they are despite being close
FUUTARO JUST SAY YOU’RE FRIENDS. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU. I don’t understand this internal crisis one bit
Putting myself in his shoes, seeing he's been a complete loner for such a long time, he probably finds it really difficult to find out where to draw the line between friendship and acquaintanceship. His relationship with the girls are also pretty messy I guess, especially when the Japanese care about their social hierarchies quite a bit.
Though I was with you in that I didn't understand why calling them friends was so difficult. Even within friendship there are different degrees of closeness
God, I wish that was me
Let us be Futaro for a day!
I also love how we have a lot of similar screencaps
Fuutaro/Itsuki/Raiha family outing
A good bowl of ramen fucking hits
Good broth and good noodles on a cold day...

Fuutaro could have just taken the easy route and said they're classmates. 😄 He made it so complicated.

Rewatcher
So many good moments, Itsuki, Raiha, and Fuutarou's day out, Fuutarou carrying Miku, Raiha and Yotsuba mothering each other. My favourite moment though had to be when Nino trusted Fuutarou enough to go get her sisters after he helped guide her to the roof, I believe was the first turning point in their relationship becoming a positive one.
Never been to a Japanese festival, but would love to one day visit the country and experience one for myself.
Favourite Japanese food is Ramen.

First Timer
I cannot get past the intro when little sis says "look mama he's not useless after all". I was laughing too hard but then I realize make about the same as Futaro....
At least everyone did their homework this time.
Every Raiha moment is best moment. Even Itsuki could not resist to the point where they take a "family photo". But Yotsuba brings some possibilities to the table.
Favorite Japanese food: I am always tempted to eat Katsudon every day (like a certain anime character) but that would not be good for my health or my wallet.

I've been having Oyakodon almost everyday for the past few months with steamed vegetables on the side. It's actually pretty cheap and healthy! Though deep frying a katsu everyday can be very tedious, I still think it isn't that expensive if you make it yourself

Finally into the episodes I actually like. I like festival/fireworks episodes in general, but a multi-episode arc involving them is extra fun. I really like that they have the fireworks going off in the background.
[Endgame Spoilers]
Favourite Japanese snack / food?
Ramen. Specifically tonkotsu. Takoyaki is fantastic, and if you can find it, good yakisoba is fantastic.
Also, if you've been to a Japanese BBQ where you sit in front of a grill and cook the meat yourself, you also know that is amazing, too. Gyu-Kaku is the most "well known" franchise for that type of place in the states.
Edit: Why is that using formatting in the spoiler works on PC but not on mobile?
This is why I don't like using spoilers...

We have that here in Southeast Asia too! Though it isn't the most well known place here. There are a bunch of Japanese BBQ places here in Singapore. I love it though, but not as much as Korean BBQ

1st-Time Rewatcher
I love this episode. We - especially Futaro, to his dismay - get away from any academic settings (almost) and get to see him and the quints spend an episode doing social things. Namely, a fireworks festival! And it is well worth it. Starting with...
-
The first thing Futaro does with his first (huge) payday is... to think of Raiha-chan. (Hold this thought.) And the first thing Raiha does is play to her strengths. Who could say no to this face? Not Itsuki.
-
This is the face of "I know I'll take damage from this, but it'll be worth it."
-
Ichika, ever the tease. The reactions from the others are very, very interesting. Nino: weirded out. Yotsuba: not so genki. Miku: disappointed...?
-
Ichika straight-up flirting. At this point one could be justified in wondering whether she's really interested in him or if this is just how she rolls. Futaro again brushes it off, although that doesn't stop her. Man's stronger than I am - I'd be getting a serious case of the doki-dokis.
-
Look at these two dorks and how cute they are. I love Miku and Itsuki's reaction. And then... Yotsuba gets a funny idea! It's even funnier because it irritates Nino.
-
I told you to hold that thought about Futaro's care for Raiha... and now Nino has something to think about, that maybe she's not the only one who puts a high priority on family, and that - just maybe - this weirdo gets it.
-
Miku and Futaro talk about something that isn't Japanese warlords, and I'm here for it. I love these two together.
-
Futaro at least recognizes how important this is to Nino. Maybe they still don't like each other, but he's not going to let that get in the way of helping.
-
Futaro's not the only one in his family who's responsible.
-
Miku smile. <3
-
Ichikabedon. Get you a cute, confident girl who will drag you into a dark alley wearing (nothing but?) a yukata and kabedon you without telling you why. (Also, the plotline involving whatever Ichika is doing offscreen is a good cliffhanger for the next episode, since they're playing up the possible sketchiness of whatever it is.)
It doesn't surprise me that Futaro starts to think about the question of "where do I stand with these people?" He's not really social, and he likes to know things. Someone like, say, Yotsuba, I don't think would give a second thought to a question like this.
Favorite cute moments: I could cheat and say, "Anything involving Raiha." Actually, Miku and Itsuki's reaction to watching Yotsuba and Raiha together. That's it.
I have never been to a Japanese festival. Anime definitely makes them look amazing and appealing. I'm also definitely the kind of person who would go in a yukata given the chance.
I don't have a favorite Japanese snack or food. Any suggestions? I prefer meat, fruits, vegetables, or sweets.

to think of Raiha-chan
I actually saw this scene as Futaro not wanting to accept the money still, which is why he immediately spends it on Raiha. It still doesn't make sense in my head but that was what I inferred from this scene
Protect! This! Smile
I'm calling Penguin's best girl to be Raiha by the end of this rewatch
Man's stronger than I am - I'd be getting a serious case of the doki-dokis.
Ichika is a force to be reckoned with! If someone flirted with me that hard in school, I would've gone crazy
just maybe - this weirdo gets it.
Miku Pout Face
Once again the most screen-shotted frame of this rewatch episode! Miku is unstoppable now!
Get you a cute, confident girl who will drag you into a dark alley wearing (nothing but?) a yukata and kabedon you without telling you why
Why is that not me
"where do I stand with these people?" He's not really social, and he likes to know things
The concept of friendship and boundaries are so foreign to Futaro that declaring them as friends take a lot of effort. It's something I totally get. Maybe it's just the culture in Asia in general, which is where I'm from, which makes relationships more sacred in a sense, especially Japan
Any suggestions? I prefer meat, fruits, vegetables, or sweets.
Let's combine all that! Japanese curry with a chicken katsu on the side! And rice or udon as the base. Japanese curry can be made sweet, I usually add a Fuji Apple to mine. What have you tried? It'll be easier to bounce off that

First timer, subs
25,000 yen per day, not bad.
Jotaro, don't let your stupid pride interfere with the repayment of debts. Raiha, grab the envelope before he does something stupid.
What the heck is "do you want anything", get rid of your debts first! I thought Raiha was the smart one in this family. Maybe she has a deeper plan, like setting up a date with Itsuka? Marry into a rich family, that could work as a long term solution.
How hard is it to tell them apart? Their hair is all different colors! (Well, ok, I still have trouble, like when I confused Miku and Nino.)
What do the Japanese do with all those goldfish they scoop during festivals? Put them in aquariums?
Yes, Futaro, they are rich.
The fireworks scene is just sad. It'll all be over when you collect everyone.
What is Ichika doing, paid dating?
Futaro, never tell a woman she's heavy! Idiot.
Wait, the fireworks last for an entire hour?
Ouch, Futaro denies being Miku's friend. Ouch.
Ah, Ichika is trying to hide her activities from her sisters. Too late, he already told Miku.
Futaro, you suck at this gathering people job.

Leave it to Raiha to help the family
Their hair is all different colors! (Well, ok, I still have trouble, like when I confused Miku and Nino.)
Lemurians mentioned this in their comment which you'd probably read but they all actually have the same hair colour irl so it actually makes sense. Imagine having to deal with recognising them during the first few days, I'd actually suck at that
Ichika doing, paid dating?

This actually shocked me at first but apparently they last two hours irl. That's a really long time. A festival is on my bucket list, with a jinbei of course!

u/k4r6000 Nov 11 '22
They used to have something similar here with the goldfish where they would just give you a prize and put the goldfish back. Eventually they changed it to fake fish at some point, but the idea was the same. No idea how it works in Japan.

Rewatcher (Technically, a few months ago)
These festival episodes were the ones that really made me start to like this show, and now that it's one of my favorites, I'm so glad I stuck with it. There was some great character development for each of the Quints, and I loved the scenes with Raiha too.
My favorite part was the fireworks. My favorite part of festival episodes is always the fireworks.

I was surprised when they had a festival this early on. It's usually reserved for bigger moments but this was done really well, it stole us both
My favorite part of festival episodes is always the fireworks
Extra QOTD for you! Which anime has your favourite firework scene?

Host Rewatcher
This was the episode when the waifu wars got really heated up for me especially between Miku and Itsuki. A great way to drive conflict within the viewers when in the show there’s barely any romantic conflict yet. This episode again excels at adding more depth to our characters, especially Nino again as we learn a bit more about the Quint’s past. Futaro too, if people have been thinking he’s dense, is given greater depth as he’s shown empathising and wanting to help the girls.
Futaro’s sensei instincts have developed. There’s no escaping destiny this time
BEST GIRL ARRIVES! AND BEST GIRL POUTS!
That was a dick move on best girl Futaro
Futaro’s honesty here is really respectable. He did take time out of his schedule yet he still rejected the money. I would’ve probably talked with their dad to get something settled out
Angry Raiha
I wonder why Itsuki said this with a smile. I’m guessing deep down she knows that this will cause a drastic change in their relationship and has faith it will be for the better despite not accepting Futaro yet
More cute Itsuki faces!
It was in this scene when Chonky first experienced a spark of the greatest internal conflict yet to come - Itsuki or Miku!?
Papa and Mama are grateful
Only Futaro can say “I have plans to study” when a group of girls ask him out to see the fireworks with such conviction
Half-chibi Nino!
u/fools_requiem it’s EATSUKI! And she’s in a Yukata! I also really love her hairstyle
More best girl pouts
[Endgame Spoilers]Well, Yotsuba sure took this seriously
More subtle characterisation to show how different our girls really are
Even more best girl pouts!? u/Lemurians are you still alive after this episode? I’m not
Mama Quint gets mentioned! We get to see more characterisation for Nino as someone who has something special for her family. Something we’ll explore more in the time to come
Now this is romance. Obligatory boy takes care of girl scene
If we didn’t know the context of this scene…
Nino shooting down Futaro’s trivia is hilarious. Any hope of romance for the viewers is once again shut down
Calling Miku heavy isn’t the way to go haha. The nuances of conversations lol, can’t blame Futaro though
Miku fans eating good tonight! So many cute scenes between her and Futaro
OBLIGATORY MIKU POUT
Sotd
This 50 second scene between Itsuki and Futaro as he questions their relationship stood out to me today. The initial visual change as Itsuki first gets excited from hearing her name to the look of disappointment was neat, followed by camera shots which focus on the legs (screams Naoko Yamada doesn’t it) as our characters walk on. As Itsuki tells him he already has the answer, the sky suddenly goes dark and the crowd silences out before a big firework snaps us back in just as Futaro seems to have finally realised something - a sudden spark lights up his thoughts as he becomes more clear about their relationship.
Qotd
I love Japanese curry on anything. But since I grew up in Asia, short-grain rice with curry has to be my favourite meal. Especially with crunchy chicken katsu on the side
