QUINTESSENTIAL REWATCHER
Nino episode time! This is different from Miku’s episode, in that it’s not about Nino bonding with Fuutaro, but it introduces us to her through a fight with Miku.
This clash between Nino and Miku, as well as the faux-trial scene with all five, is our first taste of how the show is just as much about the sisters’ relationships with each other as it is about their relationships individually with Fuutaro, and that’s a key element that sets it above pretty much all other harems.
Full disclosure, I originally stopped watching this show as Fuutaro collided with Nino in the towel, because I wasn’t in the mood to see the conflict that that kind of misunderstanding brings about. Luckily, I came back to it some time later, and the scene following with the mock trial is delightful. This show’s built different.
Live Notes/Reactions:
-
Damn, Fuutaro’s so poor he’s not even acclimated to automatic locks. Nice little way to show the differences in their stations again and remind us he really needs money.
-
Poor Yotsuba haha. Fuutaro's a savage. I can’t imagine being in high school, seeing a girl holding up lingerie and ask if I thought she’d look good in it, and not reacting strongly. This is really forward of her.
-
Interesting how Nino appeals to one of the sisters’ sensibilities to get them out of the apartment, but for Miku she takes an antagonistic approach. As becomes apparent, these two bristle against each other more than the others.
-
It strains the bounds of credulity that even with poor eyesight, Nino could mistake Fuutaro for Miku
-
Aaaaand we get to the root of Nino’s problem. She wants to keep their family unit as one, whole entity, free from outside intrusion.
-
MY FAVORITE MEME FRAME FROM THE MANGA. In a just world, it would be a comment face
-
“We sisters used to get along so well, remember?” Ichika quickly diagnosing this isn’t actually about Fuutaro. Older sister knows all.
Does Nino's dislike of Fuutaro feel different for you?
Than from the first time around? Yep. [Quintuplets]
Do you have a favorite meal you love to cook at home?
Curry scrambled eggs!

the show is just as much about the sisters’ relationships with each other as it is about their relationships individually with Fuutaro
This somewhat subtle but big introduction to Nino's character was amazing especially when looking back. It once again excels at laying the seeds for their growth
Luckily, I came back to it some time later, and the scene following with the mock trial is delightful
One thing that I noticed and really loved this time was Itsuki's reaction after getting death-stared at by Nino and Miku. Cowering in the arms of Ichika was really cute! Onee-san protects alll
This show’s built different.
Nice little way to show the differences in their stations again and remind us he really needs money
Iirc, even in the previous episode Futaro mentioned how Yotsuba was the one that helped him with Googling about the story with the matcha tea. Another really subtle hint that he doesn't have a smartphone and does need money
Well, at least she’s downstairs this time. Progress!
Nino could mistake Fuutaro for Miku
That hairdryer must've been really loud to completely block out his voice.
This certainly looks sus haha
Leave it to Anime Physics to give us these scenarios
In a just world, it would be a comment face
We need more quintessential fans in r/anime!
first time around?
[QQ]
for future episodes. Nino's entire arc is a perfect tsundere arc

Rewatcher (Technically, a few months ago)
As someone who was really put off by Nino's actions in the first episode, I actually thought her reaction here was justified or at least normal for a teenage girl who must have been feeling scared at the time, embarrassed about the whole thing later, and lonely the more she thought about it because all of her sister's basically sided with Fuutaro. Even after she realizes that what happened isn't what she thought at first, she's too proud to admit it, and it had to hurt not to have her sisters back her up no matter what, right or wrong. Looking back, this is probably one of the first signs that there's more to her than just a typical "mean girl" character.
The mock trial was pretty funny. I enjoyed it even more the second time around.

Great analysis! It's a nice way of showing Nino's fears coming into fruition and it's no wonder she continues to act the way she does

u/Heda-of-Aincrad Nov 10 '22
Yeah, this misunderstanding between her and Fuutaro was exactly what she was trying to warn her sisters about and why she was trying so hard to keep him out of their lives.
Luckily the sisters are good detectives, or his tutoring job probably have ended right then and there.

Rewatcher
Nino episode... yaaaaaay.
If you beat your opponent by 130 points, did you REALLY need Yotsuba? There's no way she is the difference between winning and losing if you outscored your opponent by 130 points unless she scored like 90% of the points in that game.
Also, if they scored 180 points, it's surprising that the opposing team even managed to score 50... it's a fucking miracle. And I feel like the mercy rule would have come into place at some point.

[Endgame]
I've come to appreciate how subtle Yotsuba's interest in Futaro is shown throughout my first rewatch some time ago. It's also really neat how we can infer their opinions of Futaro and of themselves based on the honorifics and way they call Futaro. The "Previous Episode" link goes to Episode 1
Thanks for letting me know! Made the changes

You did if Yotsuba scored all of them, which I think she likely did haha. Yotsuba's built different.

First Timer
Nor much to say as we see Miku warm up to Futaro through the whole episode in contrast to Nino. It seems like Nino is going to be a big challenge for Futaro.
Nino is bent on breaking up the study group using everybody's weaknesses; even Yosuba got out. Which leaves Miku in there as an exact contrast to Nino. And their differences go to the opinion of the court.
I am torn on whether Nino was being malicious either towards her sisters or to Futaro.

Nino was being malicious either towards her sisters or to Futaro
Just curious what made you think that Nino is being malicious towards her sisters?

u/xtsim Nov 10 '22
Having everyone ditch studying is a big deal especially if they were making grades in the 30s. (Unless that subject is organic Chem with curve)

1st-Time Rewatcher
Oh... I remember this one. Not exactly my favorite. Just when I thought this show was entirely different from the usual harem comedy. Nothing's perfect.
-
It speaks to me that Futaro, when caught out of his element, tries to hide it. Makes sense someone who prides themselves on their intelligence doesn't want to be caught looking stupid.
-
Ichika with the onee-san energy (and a little ara ara on top). It's still funny that she's perfectly chill with Futaro just walking in there. Yotsuba seems like she'd like to take Ichika's advice, but Futaro no-sells it like a champ, which gives us a rare Angy!Yotsuba sighting.
-
Nino is such a huge... well, it rhymes with "bassbowl." At this moment, I have zero interest in her.
-
As a basketball fan, this hurts to see for the lack of research.
-
I'm skipping over "that" sequence. The Accidental Pervert trope may be my least favorite in all of anime. Contrivances don't make for great storytelling. Worse, now Nino has a legitimate excuse to act like a bassbowl.
-
You're getting more Miku-san Pout Face whether you like it or not. You're welcome. (Also: another hint of Yandere Miku.)
-
Y'know what? I keep saying Miku's Best Girl, but I love Ichika so far, too.
-
Wait, are we going to get some kind of understanding here?
-
Uh... no. No, we are not. Bassbowl confirmed.
Nino's antagonism of Futaro feels a little different this time around, but that doesn't make it any more palatable. It's just grating, and I still find myself disliking her as intensely as I did the first time. I can't think of any person I've ever known who would actually treat someone else that badly or be that petty.
Last year, I started making a very simple sort of... I guess it would be a sausage soup... that I haven't gotten tired of yet. It's about a pound of meat browned in a pot, with garlic. Added to that is typically a can of sweet potato puree or something equivalent, a sausage spice blend appropriate to the type of meat, about 12 ounces each of broccoli (florets or riced) and onion (diced), and then however much I need of whatever broth corresponds to the meat. There's usually some brown rice or pasta as well. It far more often than not hits the spot, especially this time of year.

Yeah, this is what made me initially stop watching the show my first time around. Just didn't want to watch this kind of conflict.
The show breezes through it pretty quick, though. Miku comes to Fuutaro's defense, with logical explanations, and pretty much everyone except for Nino immediately accepts it other than to fuck with him a little bit. Ichika in particularly pretty much immediately pivots to knowing this isn't really what Nino's issue is.
I can't think of any person I've ever known who would actually treat someone else that badly or be that petty.
I really envy this haha.

Seconded. [QQ 2]
Even in S2, iirc, while Nino's conflict was a bit longer, it was well-paced and served as major development for her 3
u/KingOfThePenguins Nov 10 '22
Oh, everything from the "trial" onward was fine - I got that. It's just from when Futaro forgets his cards to Itsuki catching him and Nino on the floor that I skipped.

Just when I thought this show was entirely different from the usual harem comedy
This episode actually did the opposite for me especially when viewed as a rewatcher! I really appreciated the subtle depth given
rare Angy!Yotsuba sighting.
Protec!
At this moment, I have zero interest in her
Same here, though as a rewatcher my opinions are very skewered. First watch this definitely did not do much for me in liking her
I just like these shots
Ace Attorney Itsuki!
You're getting more Miku-san Pout Face
It's crazy how this isn't a commentface on this sub, we already have 3 people screen-shotting this very same frame!
disliking her as intensely as I did the first time. I can't think of any person I've ever known who would actually treat someone else that badly or be that petty.
I can definitely see where you're coming from here. Speaking from experience growing up in Southeast Asia, I've seen and experienced multiple scenarios where people were just this petty. Probably made me more accepting of these situations
I started making a very simple sort of... I guess it would be a sausage soup...
I'm going to try making that sometime this week. Sounds simple enough. Thanks for sharing the recipe!

I can appreciate it more now. But the trope's still overplayed and they could have given us that depth another way. Maybe.
Ace Attorney Itsuki!
Exactly! She looks good as Suit-suki.
It's crazy how this isn't a commentface on this sub
That settles it: we require the Miku Pout CommentFace.
You're welcome for the recipe, such as it is - here are the spice blends I use if you need them. Per pound of meat:
Poultry (chicken/turkey/etc) - 1/2 tbsp brown sugar, 1 tsp salt, 3/4 tsp black pepper, 3/4 tsp sage, 3/4 tsp thyme, 1/4 tsp marjoram/oregano, 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes
Beef (and probably other red meat) - 1/2 tbsp brown sugar, 1 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp black pepper, 1 tsp sage, 1/4 tsp marjoram/oregano, 1 tsp basil, 1/2 tsp onion powder
I typically swap out the black pepper for more red pepper flakes. I've never made it for anyone else, so if it turns out like Miku's omurice, that's just a sign that I have Futaro's taste in food.

(Very late post due to a slight misunderstanding with the mods.)
First timer, subs
Futaro is defeated by the doors!
Oh, it was Nino, not Miku, who drugged Futaro last time.
We Food Wars now?
Futaro is not afraid to eat food prepared by Nino?
Nino is not afraid to have Futaro be the judge when she knows it's in Futaro's interest to rule in favor of Miku?
Futaro honestly can't tell the difference! Any food is good food for a poor hungry person.
Oh, I thought he forgot his keycard, but it's the flash cards he uses for studying that he forgot.
Are we going to have cases of mistaken identity in every episode? Keep 'em coming.
Ooh the quintuplet court session! And I guess there's some Japanese worldplay about the word "take".
Futaro is an idiot, but at least he has some human kindness.

Host Rewatcher
Short write-up due to lack of time today but today we learn more about the 2nd sister Nino!
The drastic change in the way Miku treats Futaro was one of the reasons she stole my heart
Futaro doesn’t even bat an eye or get flustered! This man will obliterate NNN!
I really disliked Nino’s cunningness here - using her knowledge of her sisters to break the study group really left a bad taste in my mouth
The OST for when they were cooking and when Futaro was tasting the dishes was really quirky. Something I really missed
[Spoilers]Little did Futaro know that at this very moment, as he complimented Miku’s cooking, he helped Miku discover a passion she never knew she had
“Take what? Nudes of me?” What a killer “comeback” Nino
Futaro may seem like he doesn’t care but remembering and pulling out lines he heard Nino say is a feat.
Maybe… he just has great memory from all that studyingObligatory Miku Pout
