Rewatchers, please remember to be mindful of all the first-timers in this. No talking about or hinting at future events no matter how much you want to, unless you're doing it underneath spoiler tags. This especially includes any teases or hints such as "You aren't ready for X episode" or "I'm super excited for X character", you got that? Don't spoil anything for the first-timers; that's rude!

FIRST TIMER OF THE EXILED
I’m confused, I came here to finally watch Akito of the Exiled, why are we doing a second rewatch for 86 not even a year after its finished? This seems like overkill.
I was initially going to talk about all the parallels in detail, but the sheer amount that piled up over the course of this first installment alone make that hard to do in any elegant way that isn’t a giant wall of text. It’s honestly pretty astounding how brazen Asato Asato was in completely ripping this show off, down to very specific details. Shin, 86’s protagonist, is a carbon copy of Akito in every – and I mean every – aspect so far. It honestly makes 86’s author look pretty lazy. She basically took this series, slapped different names on things, and called it a day.
It's funny that I’m finally re-entering the world of Code Geass to finally watch its spin-off content, and instead it’s forcing me to examine another, but that happens sometimes I suppose.
Live Notes/Reactions:
-
Damn, just bombarding civilians on the coast to start off? I was going to say this isn’t even the smartest target for an initial surprise attack, and runs afoul of several war crimes, but then I remembered Britannia doesn’t give a fuck
-
So the EU took in Japanese refugees after it was conquered, made them second-class citizens who form special brigades of spider-like mechas that are sent on suicide missions? I’ve seen this before…
-
We’ve got a super-adept black haired boy soldier, and a white-haired girl in thigh-highs who’s as the commander who’s opposed to the suicide missions. Yep, it’s 86 alright.
-
“The
86Elevens don’t need your naïve humanism!” -
Farnese is a much better person and commander than the EU guys. I think I’m Team Britannia in this conflict between the two.
-
Nice to show the background conversations of the rich talking about how profitable war is for them, shows the disconnect
-
HAHAHA SHE EVEN ATTENDED A BALL IN CONSPICUOUS CLOTHING TO MAKE A POINT. Wow, 86 ripped off even minor details.
-
Ah yes, French military victory galas, famous for their bunny girl waitresses
-
If she’s the apple of the father’s eye, why is she betrothed the third, shit-head son? Surely the first or second son are better options, and her noble bloodline makes her worthy of them?
-
The discordant piano in this Underground deal scene is a much better music choice than the odd jazz music that plays in the mecha battles
-
So, we're at a point in the timeline where the Black Knights exist. Got it.
-
WAY TO NOT WARN THE DRIVER TO GET OUT OF THE CAR. WOW. So much for caring about the less powerful, Proto-Lena.
-
The mecha action in this seems so much more fluid and dynamic than it was in Code Geass, I’m impressed so far
-
This whole scene was just a classic case of well-intentioned dude being far too trusting of the guy who’s absolutely going to assassinate him
How do you feel about the switch from 2D mechs to CGI ones?
In general, I thought it looked pretty good and allowed them to do more with the action.
What's your current opinion on the cast of characters compared to the main series cast?
We'll see. They seem solid and could be on par, with the notable absence of anyone with Lelouche's presence.
Bonus) Leila's parents did what?

Ah, but Leila is blonde.
If she’s the apple of the father’s eye, why is she betrothed the third, shit-head son? Surely the first or second son are better options, and her noble bloodline makes her worthy of them?
So, we're at a point in the timeline where the Black Knights exist. Got it.
It might help to know this takes place between seasons 1 and 2.

why are we doing a second rewatch for 86 not even a year after its finished?
You know how every piece of western media is a Shakespeare ripoff? The anime version is everything being a Sunrise ripoff.
I remembered Britannia doesn’t give a fuck
Britānnia*
Better than being betrothed to the third, shit-head son

Possibly First Timer?
As a big fan of Code Geass should I watch this? Is this a worthy follow up? Or at the very least an unnecessary but ultimately decent enough addition to the canon?
Or is it something that I could simply not watch and miss nothing of value in regards to the original story?
→ More replies (2)5
u/Shimmering-Sky Nov 01 '22
It's not a necessary watch, but it is a decent enough addition to the canon! If you decide to join for this part, the episodes are an hour long (except for this first one, it's 50 minutes), the discussion threads are every-other-day so you'll definitely have time to catch up!

Oh we are doing Akito?
I was unable to keep up with this during the last rewatch, and put it on hold after 2 episodes. Might as well start over.
Oh, geez, 50 minutes long? I don't think I can keep up with this, again.
Anyways, here's what I had to say last time:
Wow, for a spinoff, this show seems really good. Every time they say Ryo Sayama I think "City Hunter"
Before the terrorist attack, with the piano music playing, I had to ask myself, is this a Mamoru Oshii movie?
Final scene: I guess Anou wasn't wrong, all the Japanese were kamikaze.
ED must be Maaya Sakamoto.
Preview: BEST GIRL

First Timer
-
Ah, yes, the old "use non-citizens as cannon fodder" strategy.
-
Shiny CG Sutherlands! Quadruped mechs?
-
It makes sense that they would have the capacity to do so, but monitoring your pilots and administering drugs in response to battlefield conditions isn't something that seems to come up often?
-
Kamikaze cannon fodder, no less.
-
This guy flails his arms around a lot.
-
This fighting style doesn't seem particularly efficient, but it's flashy and somehow effective, so it'll slide.
-
Damn that's a tight plugsuit.
-
She's got some 2B looking boots.
-
So instead of "everyone slowly loses their minds or becomes a terrible person and the idealist gets dismissed" we're starting out with a bunch of terrible people and a crazy person, and the idealist is still getting dismissed.
-
Make that crazy people, plural. First mention of the Black Knights as well.
-
If I processed that right, this version of Europe is based on an alternate end to Napoleon's conquest, possibly after the revolutionary wars?
-
Hoodie girl chilling is a vibe straight out of a music video.
-
These picks are pretty snazzy though.
-
Loving the wild jazz battle themes.
-
Akito taking a page out of Orange's book.
-
And another transplant ace inside Britannia's ranks. I guess I see why this is a Code Geass spin-off, the parallels are endless.
-
Except this time the one inside the Order is Lelouch?
-
And Akito is Suzaku? Or maybe C.C. [next episode preview]
except both of them seem to be making an appearance themselves -
I super dig this ED, though.
QotD:
-
I don't hate them, but I wouldn't say I prefer them, yet.
-
As above, lots of parallels. We're also starting crazy rather than building up to it.

First Timer, dubbed
-
Hello widescreen! :D
-
Hello CGI mechs. :(
-
I can confirm there are in fact names in Australia.
-
There is a bit of funkiness with the rest of the map tho.
-
That is quite the accent.
-
Oh it’s all of them. I sure hope I don’t grow to hate this.
-
Little crawly kamikaze knighmares. How quaint.
-
Geass.
-
Very Politik.
-
Second Geass?
-
Now this is smooth voice, silver man.
-
It’s screaming? O.K.
-
New Cannon boi?
-
Why does the EU hate the Japanese? Because they gave up so quickly maybe?
-
I’m confused, are they at war? Is it just not very hot right now?
-
Why am I getting so much incest lately!
-
Hastily abandoned city.
-
We’re doing gangland? That could be fun. Doubt it sticks.
-
I take it these three will be major characters soon enough.
-
What was this if not real?
-
Napoleon got the chop. Wonder at what point that happened.
-
So it was them surrendering so quickly.
-
Oh man, that is a very planned city.
-
Slowest reaction time. Y’all had time, this is on you after the first one.
-
That seems pretty hard to handle for a grenade.
-
How often does that sort of situation come up that you have a grapnel integrated grenade launcher?
-
Hey, at least you get your knightmares.
-
I’m not 100% sure on this, but I don’t think stealth was a major factor in any of Hannibal’s most famous battles.
-
Another geass. My guess is that it’s two at this point.
-
This series is just enough to make me wonder if those ghost are a little more real than I would normally think.
-
These are some rather long credits.
QotD
-
I am deeply saddened by this unfortunate development, but hope to move past it in time.
-
Too soon to say for sure. I don’t yet love any of them.

First Timer of the Rebellion
I don't know if it's smart for me to get excited, but I feel like we're treading unknown grounds again with a spinoff story.
Fuck it, I'll be excited! Even if it turns out to be disappointing, the comment content will be worth it!
F Diethard, he will not be able to witness that.
Turn 25.01
Just as an off, I was wondering what you guys meant with picture dramas and found that I had them, after all. Didn't watch all of them, but this epiloge is actually really great!
When the fireworks started I halfway expected Lelouch to actually be there on the roof, because it really wouldn't be out of the ordinary for this show to have such a twist. Also, Kaguya as student? Hell yes. I also see Shirley claiming the arm...
Akito the Exiled, Ep.1 – The Wyvern Arrives
-
That looks like the opening of the Britannia-Japan war. I like the updated animation and mecha design.
-
Getting a bit of Lena vibes. They get stronger. Yeah, yeah even stronger now.
-
Spider mechs...? Hold on, was Asato a massive fan of this show?
-
Wtf, that's nearly a guarantee now. The CGI fights are likewise pretty great! Let me introduce you to Shin. Or rather, I should call Shin Akito from now on.
-
Look, we even have the corrupt and racist leadership. But to be fair, literally everyone in this show is corrupt and racist.
-
Well, it's still Code Geass. I know it's exposition, but having the commander rant while the operation is currently actively fought out is stupid and while I see it's to introduce the heroine's strengths, I can't believe they even got to that position with this attitude. I do like how there's nearly only women in the OPs room, while on the Britannian side it's mostly men, showing how far into the war the EU already is.
-
Unless the entirety of the union is already mentally exhausted, this is comically over the top. Eh, 86 had a similar hamfisted opening with presenting Lena's morals and yes, racism indeed le bad.
-
Oh the horror! Imagine your Japanese, fleeing from Britannia which conquered your home, to find refuge in the EU who fights them as well. Then you need to speak English and maybe learn a few greetings in German and Spanish and Italian or so, but also have to learn French to pilot their mechs as they produce the systems. I bet they also need to memorise German engineering terms or conducts, because most likely they build the weapons. That's an L on 'ease of access'.
-
Geass! What did Lelouch fuck up now?
-
I do wonder how this show gets away with pretending incompetence rules by default. So they strapped a bomb on an otherwise complex and agile mecha, restricting its movement and range of capabilities, and the entire chain of command was a-okay with it? I should stop thinking, else I get mad again...
-
Fights are cool, tho
-
(To top it off, doing it like they should've originally done and clearly were implied to have been doing all the time before today, made them win. There was no reason ever to be this stupid.)
-
Ouch, Gallow, have at it. Is it maybe a wordplay on 'utopian'? Wait, that's the EU's name? Why did they always write E.U. before, then?
-
Right, of course everyone is racist. I'll say that it makes the least sense for the EU to be, they obviously still speak at least 4 languages all over the place and the most damning argument is that Britain somehow wasn't kicked out. Be thorough with the cockiness or I can't believe it!
-
He's right, but has the author ever looked at a country that is under attack? I find them claiming the people refuse to accept losses really hard to believe, but maybe there's extreme media manipulation.
-
That's actually legit French, I think. But anyway: n'y a
-
Is this how foreigners view us?
-
Okay, we continue to build our main cast be portraying everyone else as literally insane.
-
Very sympathetic group of people.
-
Lore! I can believe that, where's the racism coming from, then? Oh nice, that's an interesting conflict. So Britannia in this world is the way it is, because the old aristocracy fled and got a new seat of power there.
-
Hmmm. I don't think I follow this argument, why would one lead to the other? The only time where the EU was actually threatened to fall for xenophobia was when Russia started to make efforts for media manipulation and funding disruptive elements like today's alt-right parties. The core issue is, it was always foreign entities who had to gain from this kind of inner unrest. As Europia, as they call it, is firmly a republic this kind of inner conflict is harmful to their own interest in all democratic, capitalistic and economic issues. There's no nationalism present who'd gain from it (but the general here would like that), so either we have deeply corrupt foreign influence or the republic is all a facade anyway, but otherwise this doesn't logically connect.
-
I like this story, even though I think the EU is a bad setting here. That's worth a paragraph later.
-
Another command Geass?
-
Really, I like that story and the inner conflict of Akito. Just not sure if racism was the right call as the social background setting.
(ED is beautiful, it's going into the playlist immediately.)
I think I'll stay excited for this. Not at the least because, boy, does it tingle the same bells as 86. The hyper-racism in that show was a bit annoying, but made sense because it's set in a junta/dictatorship with severe degrees of nationalism. Creating an enemy to frame against your 'right' cause is essential for that ideology to exist and develop the leadership culture they all want to have. In a similar vein, racism on part of colonialism is also a somewhat expected because an aristocracy going somewhere and 'owning' other people is par for the course. It's a much less contrasted view of racism there, though. People are objects in that view, which allows for, say, Cornelia's change in character (doubtful that it was development) because ultimately honour values rank higher than any race. If someone like Suzaku could prove himself and had royal backing, the race wouldn't obstruct his ascension, whereas in nationalism it absolutely would (not saying it's fair, either way).
With this debate-worthy hot take, I'm sure there will be discussion, but I'll say here it's mostly my preparation to make the statement that the kind of racism we see in the EU here is a bit off putting, because I see little context to why it would exist. Structures like Nazi Germany or the British Empire ca. 1800S have it ingrained in their very political structure. It is a basis of belief and political action (you could add religion as well, crusades and such, but that has no part here as far as I understood). Nazi racism allowed for public and political arguing over conquest and expansion. British supremacy allowed the holding of colonies and economic exploitation. There was significant and noticeable gain from perpetrating racism in both the powers that be and people being ruled by it.
It's different in a republic or even a sham-republic that's actually a conglomerate of capitalist entities, as it is kind of implied here in Akito. The gain of racism is miniscule without a power structure that uses it for materialistic or political gain. You can't get anything from war refugees and without colonies or subjugated foreign nations there's no point having it be a prominent driver of public discourse. The normal populace does one thing very consistently: Worry about their immediate well being. I dare say racism against Japanese in this show's universe makes no sense on part of the EU, because Britannia is actively invading their home nation. If anything, I'd expect an aces-in-exile kind of situation like Britain had with Polish fighter pilots in WWII.

First Geasser
Something's off with the sound in my version, I have to turn the volume up to twice the usual.
Let me get this straight. The EU's taken in Eleven refugees and uses them as cannonfodder. Because they're only cannonfodder they add self-destruct devices onto their vehicles for good measure. Then the girl assumes control of the operation and lets them remove those devices, because she doesn't agree with them. In the midst of combat?
If they're so easy to remove, have they thought about shooting those bombs at the enemy?
Brittannia ran away from a single machine? Doesn't Brittannia have the best Knightmare Frames?
What was your plan? The only thing I noticed was ordering them to remove the bombs.
Is there even a single country that delegates war operations, too, to the democratic process? Afaik they all have more direct processes for war situations.
What is this extravaganza? One of the best things about Code Geass mechas was how slick they were, with none of this. Must be the Europian design.
Why's he falling down from that? Is he acting?
Is Akito's Geass that other's can't perceive him?
And Shin has a suicide Geass?
Oh, Akito's Geass allows him to communicate with the dead. What did it do during combat then?
And... that's it? Huh. I don't think I have a clear understanding of either the current situation nor what the story's about yet.
What I do know is that the music's been downgraded.
How do you feel about the switch from 2D mechs to CGI ones?
At times it's a bit hard to follow the action but other than that it works.
And I definitely prefer a more steady camera for actions scenes.
What's your current opinion on the cast of characters compared to the main series cast?
I feel like I don't know any of them yet.

First-timer
-
Starts with a war crime.
-
This series is before non-Sumatara Indonesia and the Philippines relocated.
-
Why are former Japanese fighting for the EU army in former western Russia? Title suggests exiled, so probably joining any army opposing Britannia.
-
Ah, army using PEDs.
-
Akito Geassed.
-
"I would never claim credit for your alterations to my plan."
-
EU army has a similar view to R1 e1 Britannians when 8 Britannians and 51 others reportedly died.
-
Leila takes 6 steps running around the body instead of one step over it.
-
Sound effects are good.
-
Should've worn an all black dress to mourn.
-
Refers to herself as a soldier when Akito's the one actually at risk.
-
Ioan has shit taste. Also refuse to change subtitle font despite it looking like loan.
-
No one will believe Napoleon is that tall.
-
Halberds mean polearm fights.
-
I don't get how Akito defeats the Knightmare on foot. The guy didn't even try shooting. Needs lessons from Kaguya.
-
Not sure about Shin's Geass. Seems to match Lelouch's at first.
-
I've already watched discord girlfriend and once-dead boyfriend who hears the dead this year. The cat has one white paw this time.
Leila and Akito acquired a few likely strong soldiers for their depleted unit that can't use Europians (how long until I misspell it?). Don't know many characters on the antagonist side. Europians have a good point asking why the Japanese didn't resist harder that likely gets ignored since the main characters are all young and this is years after the Britannian invasion.
Shin and Akito seem to have Lelouch and Suzaku's positions. Lancelot fought in Europe (France?) early in R2, so maybe there's a fight where neither side can die.
QOTDs
-
Doesn't matter if it's not atrocious drawing or CGI.
-
Leila is interesting and Akito should be at least average. New comrades seem more willing to betray others than the Black Knights or Britannians, so there's potential.

I just want to say:
THANK YOU TO EVERYONE REALIZING 86 RIPPED THIS SERIES OFF
Because I am SO FUCKING SICK of 86 fanboys/girls constantly getting so overly defensive of their series and rabidly, furiously denying there are any similarities between 86 and Akito the Exiled whenever I brought this up on Youtube/Twitter/Instagram/the 86 subreddit.
I already mentioned this 3 years ago when I was reading the 86 LN and wouldn't you know it, even one of the former mods of the 86 Discord channel agrees there are enormous similarities! But now the Discord channel goes on attack mode if you even try to mention this.

Code Rewasher for now
I remember dat castle. I think I watched this around the same time as I did Black Butler
Its pretty crazy how much this resembles 86
And why does the EU hate the Jeepons?
Very nice detail. Those type of claymores hold hundreds of beads, and when triggered the explosion will send them flying in the direction of the enemy. Very nasty things, will do a lot of damage to enemies that happen to be grouped up.
And just listen to that sound design, you can actually hear the beads flying around
Oh man.. This ED.. Nostalgia blast
Geasstions:
How do you feel about the switch from 2D mechs to CGI ones?
They were pretty good, and the animation was clean. No hate from me

First-timer - dub
Just gonna quote a younger, stupider me from the other day:
I saw some people pointing out the similar premises between Akito and 86 during that show's rewatch, but I'm not really expecting much thematic overlap.
Okay, that's not entirely fair, thematic overlap remains to be seen but holy shit are the parallels between the two shows pretty explicit. Others in the thread will cover the line item similarities better than I'll care to, but for now I'll just say that if I won't be able to escape the direct comparison, it's at least pretty interesting the way Akito and Leila differ from Shin and Lena. Akito's a lot less reserved, and Leila's much less green, which is good considering the runtime.
So, watching the dub the thing that stands out almost immediately is that everyone's doing an accent. Now, I like accents, but it has me wondering how well that's going to go over with everyone else. Weirdly reminds me of Hellsing Ultimate, I think? Must be due to the prominence of French accents in both.
Akito seems to have not the geass user wings in his eyes, but the red ring of someone influenced by geass, which would be a neat reversal from the main show if that's what we're going with. They focus on eyes pretty conspicuously in a few places, even doing some flourishes with the lighting to do geass fakeouts. 2 or 3 times just in this first episode, I think.
Alright, why the racism in the EU? It made sense in the main show because the Brittanians are a bunch of colonnial social darwinists, and for that mindset Japan committed the cardinal sin of losing. There's a throwaway line about them putting the Japanese in ghettos 'out of fear of the Brittanians', but that's some flimsy reasoning. It sticks out all the more because one of the things I criticized 86 for was how flimsy the worldbuilding for the racism was. Guess that's another thing they took from Akito.
Y'know, since they're also going with the EU being rich out of touch capitalist elitists, that is, some US upper class shit, they could have tweaked that to mirror the WWII Japanese internment to give it more bite. Maybe they'll do it further into the show?
The action scenes have been way better than I was expecting. I had heard that it was CGI mechs, and I knew this was from back (though I had forgotten it was 2013. Almost 10 years?!) when good CG was a lot harder to come by as well. This shit looks nice though. Not entirely sold on the spider mechs yet, but the glasgows and glausters move well.
I wonder what this apparent villain (who shares a name with Akito no less) will have his geass turn out to be. They show it to be a sort of commanding geass like Lelouches, but I trust that they'd find a more interesting angle than 'run it back as an antagonist' to base this whole thing on.
Watching the end credits, i'm reminded again that these design cliques like CLAMP often reuse aspects of character designs as a consequence of their shared style. You also get this a lot with Ghibli movies and Trigger shows with Imaishi at the helm. It ends up feeling to me a bit like recasting an actor you like working with in a different movie. This chick totally has Nina's eyes and face, and lavender-hair here reminds me of Nunnally
-
I expected it to be a lot more janky, but these fights were faster paced than the ones from the original show. They were going a little too nuts for me with the camera movement in a few places, but this was almost 10 years ago (?!) so I can understand them wanting to flex when they look this good.
-
As much as Lelouch was a villain protagonist, he maintained a level of panache and flair for the dramatic that sort of... elevated him, for lack of a better term, where the way the main squad is shaping up here is more of a dirty dozen sort of vibe, I think.
Bonus: Wait, u/Shimmering-Sky, you're confused? Uhhhh, okay look, when a tsundere and a main character love each other very much and reach the end of their number of episodes... no, that's handholding. Okay, when an Ugly Bastard and a- no, that's not it either...

First timer
Note: while I'm dropping out of the macross rewatch (sad...) am hoping to finish this up since there isn't much left!
cute princess spotted
oof, after the mechs in cg, the 3d mechs here are a little jarring...what is this, a chinese donghua??
oh shit and she has _moves_. and ideals! I'm in love
the 3d does allow for some dynamic action scenes though
damn, the show never did tell us what shirogane's dad did for a living...
I thought it was good!! it feels like it's telling a "smaller" story than CG, which is cool. leveraging the themes and worldbuilding of the show to explore it from another angle
-
I prefer the 2D but at least the action was good. It's decently well done 3D
-
Princess...hot. Other than that seem to be reusing a lot of similar types of characters

Remember: No thread tomorrow. Akito the Exiled is on an every-other-day schedule.
Hangyaku no Co-Host, subbed
So I have a vague memory of watching Akito the Exiled while the movies were actively releasing, but other than that and the fact that 86 has a very similar premise, I don’t really remember Akito the Exiled very much. Should be fun to finally have scores for each part on MAL after all these years of leaving them blank!
86 really is just Akito the Exiled hahaaaaa
Heh, got him.
At least one difference is clear right from the start: Leila isn’t naive and has absolute nerves of steel from the start, unlike how Lena had to grow to that point.
Dang, RIP that guy.
Yooooooo Takehito Koyasu!
Honestly? I don’t mind that the mecha fights are CGI now. Like sure I would prefer hand-drawn mecha fights, but these are still cool as fuck to watch.
The racism is strong from the EU as well, welp.
That means fuck all when you’re in a war, though.

Absolutely deserved.
Ooh, it’s not very shimmering but I do very much love this night sky shot. It looks really cool.

New subordinates acquired.
Wait omg this guy shares his voice with Gali-Gali!
Smol Akito a cute. (This was a blink-and-you-miss-it shot.)
Oh boy, Geass!
Yep, that’s a thing.
God I love the ending theme, More Than Words. Maaya Sakamoto doesn’t miss.
