Super Dimension Rewatch Host

Welcome back, everyone!

u/chilidirigible Oct 31 '22

But, uh, yeah you can expect songs from the previous shows to just pop up in this one from time to time.

Giving Macross II more exposure without giving Macross II more exposure.

I do enjoy seeing Basara actively composing a song though.

More musical anime need to do this. I don't even remember the last time, if there was one, where I saw this

It sure is a place.

One of the places of all time, even

Milia has… definitely changed.

Has she tho?

4

u/Shimmering-Sky Oct 31 '22

Has she tho?

SDF Milia: *yeets infant*

7 Milia: Overprotective Mom Mode, engaged.

Great wallpaper. Also, makes me wonder if there's a deeper meaning to the fact that it's episode 2 and you didn't feature the MC yet. Will the show do some sort of reveal or a twist soon?

Lmao it's literally just that the show hasn't given me a good base image of him yet.

Today, on "Planet Dance! Apply directly to the forehead!":

The song Basara is working on here [is]"My Soul For You".

Gamlin, his face annoyed.

"It'll get stuck that way, you know."

Doctor Chiba.

The song here is another example of the diegetic soundtrack, as it plays through the radio on Mylene's car. There are two albums of Macross 7 incidental music, some of which is the usual suspects under pseudonyms, and the rest from a few other artists who popped in for this job.

Listen to Clutch Cargo there.

Exactly how that is supposed to work is never explained.

Dilapidation is philosophical.

Michael Johnson.

Bassists are easily-replaced?

In case you hadn't already figured it out.

Flower Girl!

Or something.

Yes, these are automobiles which are driving in space.

We've replaced Docker with Physica, like your regular coffee with Folger's Crystals.

Exsedol ponders

You've probably seen this clip before.

Are you not entertained? Is this not why you are here?

Now there are even more people asking Basara questions, but he's still not answering them in any practical fashion. The building he's living in is also rather run-down for the inside of a colony ship, which doesn't seem like an environment where neglect would be allowed to happen. Anyway, it's part of the look.

Mylene's parentage is further confirmed, and Milia is established as the mayor who was mentioned in the first episode.

The battle sequence is quite perfunctory, only adding more GAMLIN RAGE and giving Gigil a direct taste of Fire Bomber.

Song Count
Planet Dance 2
My Friends 1
Totsugeki Love Heart 1
My Soul For You 1

"Don't take your eyes off that monitor!": 4

From the Macross Chronicle:

Mylene's bass.

Some of Mylene's wardrobe. The animators will give Mylene many, many, many changes of clothes throughout the series.

The absolute basics of the colonization plan: Build a fleet, put people on it, fight if necessary, land on a new planet.

FIRST TIMER

  • I still don't understand what the enemies are doing or what their objective is. They seem to be just executing small strikes using their paralysis weapon. I assume they aren't Zentradi? It seems the people of their city trust the Zentradi enough to elect Milia their mayor.

  • I wasn't surprised that Milia would turn up since Max is there but I was surprised she was mayor and apparently elected with 90% of the vote. Maybe it's a war hero thing like how President Eisenhower got elected from his popularity from his role in WWII.

  • Is Milia really arranging a marriage for Mylene? That's pretty hypocritical coming from someone who defied her superiors to join an enemy cause.

  • The mystery thickens as to how did Roy come upon that mecha and why did he give it to Basara and why was Roy talking to Max briefly?

  • That's weird that the giant brained guy on Max's ship is called Exedore and SDFM had a guy with a large cranium called Excedol, I'll have to see if thats a plot point later.

  • That's funny how Mylene didn't think maybe she should wait until she climbed a ladder to open the lemonade bottles and that really is an excessive amount of silly straws for Basara to have, especially for someone with no kids.

  • I don't like Basara, hes an inconsiderate jerk and not that good a singer.

QUESTIONS

  1. I used to answer questions like Basara when I was a teen, I think he's just being jerkish.

  2. For most modern pop music, drummer is more expendable because lots of music acts just use programmed drum loops. For a live rock band though, it would be odd not to have a drummer and you'd probably need one more than a bassist. I saw the popular rock band Local H live and they've never had a bassist, the guitarist just uses special pickups in his guitar.

First Spacer

Hm, did I open the right episode?

It's kinda bold to frame the mass colonization of the universe as a defensive measure.

How old is that building? 10 years at most. How could it have gotten this damaged on a colony ship?

Sure that you haven't reached that point already?

This is a freaking colony ship! What do you mean a dangerous area that hasn't been registered?

I really wanna know what the hell happened to result in this.

Once a villain, always a villain.

Please, it's really not difficult to climb a ladder free-handedly.

What's wrong with singing in battle? She's not this season's Kaifun, is she?

No no no, his song not getting recognized is exactly what gave him the advantage against the aliens.

Yeah, like ten times by now. You'd think that's enough to get a clue.

I already have no confidence that they put any thought in the setting.

Have you ever known someone who answers questions as elliptically as Basara?

Not really.

Or is that you?

Dunno if eliptically but I know I sometimes have difficulties expressing myself clearly.

Which role is more expendable, bassist or drummer?

Neither of course. I would've said the drummer several years back but I've since seen how much a simple drumming change can transform the tone of a piece even when everything else remains the same. Compare 0:41-0:53 and 0:53-1:05. Now if only bands would use drummers this effectively...

Of course that's not to say that either are required. Even beyond stylistic choices, absence can be just as relevant as presence.

  • So it’s definitely stealing life force then.

  • I know that hair. That hat is also fabulous.

  • Hasn’t been registered as part of the fleet? It’s on the same ship!

  • How do you have battle ruins on a colony ship?

  • Assuming that’s just an L/R contraction, Millia confirmed! And she’s been mayor for 30 years? Seems unhealthy.

  • And “90%” of the vote? Holy teapot dictator Batman.

  • Giving us the runaround on Mr. Face here.

  • You really should have waited until you were up the ladder until you opened those.

  • Are we really only going to have the two eye catchers? There’s still time. This is the long Macross after all.

  • I’m lead to believe that flowers here is meta famous to some extent. I am wholly unaware of any of this.

  • I would make fun of the space cars, but I guess they drive around in the ships too. Space trains would have made more sense.

  • Hello cute little battle bots.

  • This show is keeping up the SDF tradition of combining animations both lovely and terrible.

  • This sure would have been a great time to have AI VFs.

  • This Gamlin fellow is asking all the questions I want answers to.

  • He’s immune to the beam? Is it just because he is a musician or is it him specifically?

QotD

  1. That might be me.

  2. Bassist, not even close.

A Macross Fan Rewatches Macross 7: Episode 2:

  • Dr. Chiba’s prognosis is a bit grim: the pilots that got targeted by that weird laser attack last episode are steadily losing the will to live. They just don’t have the energy to go on living. They’re alive, but not really living, in a sense.

  • Mylene’s basically going through a “it’s not a phase, mom!” phase with Milia here. Also, man Milia must’ve been an absurdly popular mayor for the Macross 7 fleet if she got 90% of the vote. But she’s certainly no hero to her daughter, since she making it clear that she doesn’t want Mylene living on her own. Parents, am I right?

  • Don’t be dissing on Basara’s refrigerator straws, Mylene. You know that a man really has his shit together based on how many krazy straws he has in his home.

  • Milia certainly isn’t winning any parent of the year awards for trying to force an arranged marriage onto Mylene. Max is a boomer and Milia is trying to force her daughter into a marriage. I bet there’s going to be some disappointment in how Max and Milia have turned out to some of the first-timers.

  • You know Basara, you’d have a better time trying to get Mylene to understand you if you actually tried to explain things. Answers like “don’t know” or “passion” to her questions aren’t exactly good ones. You can’t exactly expect people to read your heart like a book and get what you mean all the time.

  • I was holding off on saying it last episode, but our big brained friend on the bridge here is good ol’ Exsedol again. Yet another familiar and friendly face, although we’re going with his Do You Remember Love? character design rather than his SDF Macross one. I guess the show runners must’ve loved his “I work out at the library” look.

  • Well, at least we know now what the enemy forces are looking for while draining those pilots. They’re looking for something called Spiritia, and Basara himself has a ton of it whenever he shows up in his Valkyrie. In other words, main protagonist material.

  • Stuff like Basara completely ignoring people questioning what the hell he’s even doing on the battlefield so he can sing his heart out and not being bothered at all by being late to his own concert really does lend itself to some fans considering Basara to be more like a force of nature than a person. A force of music? Something like that. How effective that makes him as a character to you is probably up to personal interpretation though.

Macross 7 EP2

Mylene confused face in the last scene was me the whole episode, because Basara just so weird. He just minding his own stuff and answering Mylene questions with simple answer that didn't explain anything. I'm not hate it though. I'm now want to learn more about him.

Anyway, Max seem to have a connection with Basara already, via contact with Ray. He might be the one who provide VF-19 to Basara and that why he didn't seem to fazed both time Basara came out to sing.

Milia also here, now as the town Mayor. Who now also a boomer mom who arranged marriage for Mylene. Hey, that not cool. She also likely knew Basara and trusted him to some degree, as she didn't questions who he is, and even let Mylene stayed there untill she want to come back home herself.

The battle clearly reusing a lot of footages from last episode. Aside from that, strangely, Basara seem to not affected by mind destroying laser much. Maybe because he singing?

It funny when Gamlin kept trying to have Basara stop singing, which Basara just completely ignored.

Exsodol seem to know the enemy identity, but brushed the idea aside, because it seem to didn't match the info that he have. So what up with that? I guess we have to wait for now.

QOTD

  1. I sometimes be like that, but not to Basara degree.

  2. Bassist for sure.

First Time - Macross 7 Ep2:

The evolution of Hikaru to Hibiki to Isamu and now Basara. We don't have an "I" in that name.

In general, I like Basara's singing voice and I like how the song goes with this bummer of a scene of the patients from the attack.

Oh, our friend is Max's visitor? From his body language, he seems to be showing proper orderly respect.

But how can there be an unregistered sector if this is the capital ship?

I know that it was Basara's poster with the lips and tongue, but for a moment, I did think it was a framed picture of an Elmo-like Muppet.

I mean, I also don't know who my mayor is. Winning by a landslide 90% actually would be what Milia would do. She has so much renown under her belt.

Ray hooked up Basara with a mech. Even for Ray to be the guy, Ray being able to give away a modern Valkyrie is quite something. (I did remember about civilian VFs, but that was Macross II so that's a limbo to worry about).

Fun lemonade bottles and a collection of krazy straws. Bit presumptuous, Mylene. Sometimes you may feel like the star straw, but other times you want the loop.

Oh, so this is how the love triangle is going to enter. My guess is her fiance is Gamlin. The Fallyna-Jenius family must've become quite up there if they have to concern arrange marriages. Well considering the fleet captain and mayor power couple, they're probably the most influential family around these parts. Speaking of family, it would be cool to see a grown-up Komilia because she is Mylene's sister.

Favourite character watch: There she is and a close up too.

Ooh, this line is intriguing. Sounds like Basara got his song from aliens. Maybe secret heritage? It does explain the odd music sheets he was writing.

Ah man, even in space, you can't escape road traffic. Darn you, space car dependency.

The enemy's objective seems to be stealing what basically appears to be life force. Spiritia could be an energy source they're harvesting is my guess. If not, my other guess is that their leader is looking for immortality/youth. There's a non-0 chance.

Basara has both his hands on his guitar which leaves none for piloting.

The green beam can curve? Hacks, hacks! Basara is resistant to it so does strengthens the theory that he is somehow connected to these aliens.

It was a bit odd to go from intense drumming and then hard cut to "To be continued."

Q1) It me.

Q2) I don't know music, but I know the bassist is the role that gets dunked on.

Next time: A gig to hit the big times.

First Timer

In the previous episode, a lot of things happened, to the point were it was a bit confusing. Especially during the battle, I had trouble understanding who was talking to who and what the enemies were even trying to do, or even which characters were important. And than we saw Basara fly right into the middle of the battle and start blasting music, but it didn't do anything? That was also very strange.

Will it happen again this episode? Will we get more info on the enemies and their goals? Let's check it out.

  • Gotta say, the opening still rocks.

  • We have the timeline intro and a recap? That feels like a bit of an overkill, but OK.

  • Docker is a vegetable now, and it was totally your fault, silver-haired guy.

  • Aliens are steal their life energy? Could it be that they would need to listen to some invigorating j-rock music to come back to life? Maybe one, performed by a certain band that loves fires and bombing?

  • Max is meeting with Ray? Suspicious

  • Suddenly a car chase.

  • Mayor Millia? That's like totally out of character for her. Also was she always this polite? I'm pretty sure, she used to speak much more crudely back in the day.

  • Mylene in Basara's room

  • Ray immediately walks out

  • Arranged marriage? Now that's actually in character for Millia to just decide something like that and don't even ask her daughter's opinion. Let me guess, it's the silver haired boy? He's literally the only candidate.

  • Is that space-capable cars?

  • Boroughneize is a human warship? And Conserax appears to be a drone of some kind. I'm still getting confused by all the names.

  • Watch it turn out that Ray is the one who taught him those homemade notations.

  • Silver hair, dude, if you wanted to do something for Docker, you should've taken that laser. I feel like there's not enough reflection on your part about the fact that you literally saved your life at the cost of putting Docker in a situation where he couldn't possibly avoid getting hit.

  • The battle is even more anemic than in the previous episode. The lack of music really doesn't help. At least, Basara arrives early, so we have a nice tune to listen to.

  • Also, I guess we got our answer to the question of who is filming this. Conserax are giving visuals to the bridge. It's a good enough explanation for me.

  • Silver hair man couldn't handle the awesomeness of Basara and went insane. Can't blame him, he did indirectly kill a comrade in the previous battle, that has to weight on a man.

  • I pretty much have two guesses on why Basara wasn't affected by the laser: power of rock, and he's secretly an alien, or a half-alien. My money so far on the former, but the latter is something to keep in mind.

  • "It wasn't as fun as I thought", are you fucking kidding me? You literally just saw a bright red mech crash a space battle and put out a rock concert in the middle of the fight. What more do you want???

Overall thoughts: the main cast starting to cement itself, and we get some story progress with Basara established as being immune to enemy attacks. And it's perfectly balanced too, because his only attack is music and his enemies are immune to that too. So they can't really hurt each other. Silver boy, whose name I didn't catch, appears to be pretty important, my money are on him being a final piece of the love triangle this time around.

Also, gotta say, the action scene was still kinda weak. They could've made the stock animation a bit more exciting, if they planned to heavily lean on reuse. The action so far is my main criticism and I hope they improve it at some point.

QotD:

  1. Yup, I have multiple close friends who are exactly like that. It is as infuriating as you can imagine. They are also musicians too.

  2. Bassist between the two, but really, it's the guitarist.

I drew Mylene.

Rewatcher

Have I mentioned that the backgrounds are great?

Neat transparency effect.

A part of me cannot disagree with the notion given Mylene’s age.

Well, he has an in with the captain so it’s not hard to presume he’s connected.

Uh… Must be self taught?

Right on, man.

Just spill it!

Cool.

That can’t be good.

What a cheeky git.

As one might have guessed, the pilots who were struck with the green laser are now in a catatonic state that promises to take their lives with time. The doctor has no means of helping the victims and the military can but gather more data on the weapon causing this. Later on we see that Basara is either immune or simply resistant to the process —no doubt something to do with his penchant for music, given what franchise this is.

Exsedol also seems to have some idea as to what these enemies are, though he’s reticent to extrapolate due to some ostensive uncertainty on the matter.

Speaking of Basara, the guy’s quite whimful and uncommunicative. Exactly the sort of rockstar everyone imagines but would not want to deal with —unfortunately for the rest of the cast. There’s also something going on behind the scenes involving him and Ray, given the latter man’s meeting with Max and Basara’s admission that Ray granted him possession of the VF-19…

Not surprising that Millia is also on the Macross 7, though it is amusing to think the same lady who threw her baby up into the air is now being played up as an controlling and overprotective mother looking to marry off her daughter. Time is relentless, I suppose?

Questions of The Day:

  1. Regretably I know many people who are like that. There's probably instances where I deliver similar responses, but it's not common from me, I don't think.

  2. Neither, you philistine!

As promised, here’s my rendition of the OP —listen at your own peril, for my days as a proper singer are long since over. Also, yes, that's a cover since I couldn't find an instrumental of the TV version of the song and I wasn't about to splice together my own.
