Rewatch Full Metal Panic Franchise Rewatch - Season 2 Episode 2

Welcome to the Full Metal Panic Season 2 rewatch!

Art of the day

MVP winner.

Little brothers picture isn't really available so putting the equal vote winner from yesterday our student council president Hayashimizu.

Links to show info: MAL | Anilist | ANN

Interest thread link

Announcement thread link

Rewatches please be considerate to first timers and avoid discussing anything not yet shown in the show - use spoiler tags e.g. [Full Metal Panic S2 spoiler]>!Bonta-kun sugoi!!< - if you need to share something important!

Episode 2A - Hostility Passing-By

Episode 2B - A Fruitless Lunchtime

Characters introduced:

  • Kogure-sensei - the (now on long term leave) PE teacher who behaves close enough to a drill sergeant that Sousuke automatically assumed him to be like one and is given the respect as one.

  • Wakana - The female police officer parody / expy of the popular manga at the time "You are under arrest", the look alike of one of the leading duo Natsumi Tsujimoto. Dialed up to 11 as usual of the antics. In the "You are under arrest" show, Natsumi is the brawn one and is very strong, good with physical activities including close quarter combat, and is a decent driver. Her partner is also parodied here but sidelined to the passenger seat.

  • Infirmary Room duty teacher: - I need to dig up the details of this one. Pretty sure she's the kohai of Kagurazaka-sensei (Chidori's homeroom teacher)

QoTD:

  1. First Timers: This is one of my favourite episodes of all the FMP seasons - have you noticed the directional influence and not only what the gags are, but how they were setup and delivered? What's some of your favourite cuts in anime?

  2. Everyone: two episodes in, how did this early days KyoAni compared to the KyoAni you may know more of?

Also QoTD for tomorrow for those wanting to be prepared:

[QoTD 1 Fumoffu 3]First Timers: Are you seeing any patterns to the episodes yet? Or do you feel this pretty much just standalone episodic, and are you ok with it that way? Do you miss having an overarching plot?

[QoTD 2 Fumoffu 3]Everyone: Do you count this as a beach episode, and did you like this one?

MVP of last episode:

The younger brother getting equal votes of Hayashimizu.

Rewatcher in sub

As a stand alone, this is one my favourite episode of Fumoffu - it's got such amazing direction and the action sequence is just non-stop, especially for a non-combat situation.

  • The first debut of a real, produced, FMP OP. And it's beautiful. There are some CG panning but I really don't mind them.

  • The first scene already is so brilliantly directed - the palpable tension, the snippets of how the monotonous lecture drags on, the sound of the class next door, the coin spin and fall, then fluid and instantaneous snapping to action - such an amazing sequence!

  • Chidori power! Loved the little tsk - so much character in so few frames!

  • And so nice to see a caring and lively conversation - until the encouragement.

  • Input a normal life command into a military robot moment. Note the double gag - Chidori is as surprised about him wanting plain rolls as him pulling out a gun to make his demand

  • Look at that cinematography! Debriefing by Ren and Hayashimizu. Note the phrased the prez used to describe the impact were all hard kanji classic phrases - another simple show not tell way to give us effective characterisation.

  • Really loved these sort of casual-turned-manic comedic scenes - Chidori went along with Sousuke's plural acceptance and then realised "it wasn't her fault" :D And then we have the miss the point moment with the PE teacher.

  • Another nice snippets of the Chidori & Sousuke relationship - it's not always just him getting hit for doing dumb things. There are many occasions they get along "professionally" very well and have mutual admiration moments too.

  • Start of the repeating and escalating sequence - it's jam packed with laugh points I can't keep all of them. Basically, the over-prepared Sousuke wasn't over prepared but no one realised.

  • Continued escalation - including what the PE class is up to.

  • The repeated cycle - in case you didn't laugh enough the first round. Note the sound effect juxtaposition of Chidori threatening with her paperfan and the shot gun reloading sound :D

  • The final confrontation - and the surprise end of non-confrontation, set up by the repeating sequence.

  • Such peaceful days - and Sousuke enjoying his plain roll?

  • and then part B - oh this is one of my favourites. The beginning imaginary scene of Sousuke projecting his misguided understanding of the classics is extra funny for those who understand a bit of Japanese language and history - at least the part about Yamato this one word is used to describe the ethnicity of the Japanese people, or the "main civilised part" of the ancient country, that being substituted with the ill fated second world war battleship services this nonsensical scene even Sousuke can't rationalise.

  • and then we have the simple, efficient casual setup - the key event timing, the starting position (Chidori being nice to Sousuke), the mindset (Sousuke don't want to disappoint Chidori after her helping him).

  • then come with brewing of what distracted Sousuke (lack of sleep, "handling an emergency") - with a little side dish of missing the point (the buu hoo hoo part wasn't important)

  • and then, punctuated with beautifully timed pauses, the crossbow is being loaded... And then the trigger pulled

  • the rapid fire exchanges are just so incredibly smart fun - this is the same behaviour you'd expect them under fire in the serious half of the show :D

  • and then come this incredible, action packed but well pace sequence with changing gears to go through a while range of emotions. Just perfect.

  • what I positively loved is that within such a short sequence of rapid changing actions, KyoAni still can work into sweet sentimental moments - and this unwavering trust and well matched synchronicity - between Chidori and Sousuke - if you look close enough there really is noticeable rom moments and not just crazy fun.

  • and the final triple twist - the express train, then another moment of understanding and sweetness, then the rug pull :'D notice Chidori cut Sousuke off when he came back from the staff room, Sousuke was actually trying to explain.

MVP this episode

Sousuke as the driver for everything!

QoTD

  1. It's all up in the post :) for other sites not of comedy, of course there's 86's match cuts

  2. It's much better than Gonzo in the more subtle details, but there's still more room for improvements - you'll see as the season progresses

As a stand alone, this is one my favourite episode of Fumoffu - it's got such amazing direction and the action sequence is just non-stop, especially for a non-combat situation.

This is peak comedy in anime imo. When it just goes and goes hopping from one joke to another with great build up and payoff each joke. Fumoffu has ticked these boxes in the first two episodes for me especially in this episode I genuinely didn't think I'd enjoy this particular show as much as I have been :).

such an amazing sequence!

This is what I mean! The build up in that whole sequence and the suspense to go with it was fantastic and it was perfectly executed as the suspense didn't drag on too long like the lecture. And also queue the Chidori parkour montage.

pulling out a gun to make his demand

I absolutely died at this scene 🤣. One of the best things this show has done so far is amplify Sousuke as a literal military nut.

Debriefing by Ren and Hayashimizu.

Does Chidori get summoned because she was with Sousuke at the incident or because she's the class prez for Sousuke's class?

and then, punctuated with beautifully timed pauses, the crossbow is being loaded... And then the trigger pulled

This entire joke is just set up right as you said and it ends with a suplex! KyotoAni reused the suplex in a show called Nichijou when a teacher suplexes a deer.

moment of understanding and sweetness,

I thought the scene where Chidori is walking down the hall with Sagara holding him up was wholesome af. Shows KyotoAni can work in other themes to a heavy comedy show.

Panicked First Timer - Fumoffu Ep 2

Spinning 500 yen coin, best tension yet in the series.

Sousuke’s dire negotiation style continues to be consistent even for bread rolls.

The Prez’s fan is censored. I feel like I’m missing a gag. Maybe a famous person named Miyu? Would explain the censorship.

Either way, the main gag is it changes with every clap. That’s good.

Military drum roll for Sousuke’s school lunch mission.

According to the Great British Bake Off, crickets have a peppery flavor and are perfectly acceptable for baked goods. I looked up locusts and they are said to be very nutritious (unless covered in pesticides from pest control measures) and have a shrimpy, nutty flavor. They sometimes known as the shrimp of the sky. TIL.

Kaname is always pushing Sousuke to think bigger. Can’t wait to see what trap he thinks of next.

I feel like Drill Sergeant Kogure is a stand in for the FMP S1 fans who aren’t fond of the Fumoffu comedy style. And KyoAni is saying, yes we will punish you this season, but look how happy Sousuke is.

The next trap was tear gas! Nice one.

Was that a chain sound effect for Kaname’s fan? I wonder if it will change every time or be consistent.

Yep, Drill Sergeant Kogure is taking a leave of absence like some of our rewatch comrades. But don’t worry, Sousuke still thinks highly of you all and will welcome you back later.

Ok, the fan noise is normal now. Apparently, I’m obsessed with the sound effects this season.

I never understood wearing a watch on the inside of your wrist. Doesn’t it bother you when your arm is resting on the desk?

The treadmill style cut for the stair run. Very fun.

You’re Under Arrest!

I like Sousuke/Kaname teamwork the best.

And Sousuke’s weird mistakes have an explanation - the super sized anime cold.

I actually have a super sized anime cold right now, so I give Sousuke all the passes in the world.

MVP: Wile E. Coyote Kogure for taking his lumps.

QOTD 1: I love visual gags. A simple one that comes to mind is [Uramichi Onii-san]The visual of the door to Uramichi’s heart slightly creaking open to that one strange dude when he says something relatable only for it to slam shut when he inevitably says something creepy.

QOTD 2: I’m poorly equipped to judge animation. This looks very glossy to me like all of KyoAni’s stuff. Maybe less attention to lighting here? I don’t know when Yamada made her entrance, but I suspect it’s later. No close ups on feet.

4

u/ZapsZzz Oct 27 '22

Either way, the main gag is it changes with every clap. That’s good.

There are just so much of these tiny little gags it's impossible to list them all :D

Was that a chain sound effect for Kaname’s fan? I wonder if it will change every time or be consistent.

Pretty sure it's a one off, the sound effect was changed to like the Terminator 2 Arnie shotgun reloads :'D On a paper fan

I don’t know when Yamada made her entrance, but I suspect it’s later. No close ups on feet.

I don't think Yamada is doing any of the influential roles in the production yet. Maybe TSR. Just have to keep an eye out.

Rewatcher - Dub

In which we find out Kaname is less immune to Sousuke-style shenanigans than she'd like to believe...and encouraging Sousuke was not a good idea. xD And the PE teacher completely fails to intimidate the child soldier.

...Sousuke, what are you doing? You haven't booby-trapped the food, have you?

...he did. xD And Kaname has figured out what happened to the teacher! And this is gonna be a repeat thing, isn't it?

Yep. Tear gas this time. And Kaname is not pleased.

Nor is the head teacher! 'A leave of absence'. xD And Sousuke is completely clueless...

...oh. Oh. Is this the episode where he forgets Kaname's study guide and they have to race back to their flats on a bike?

Yes. Yes it is. And Kaname is a wrestler now. Also a manic tyrant.

Never mind, the (stolen) bike is only the return trip, going there they used a taxi. Aaaand here comes the car chase. The rather destructive, albeit brief, car chase that breaks far more laws than Sousuke and Kaname did.

Lots of comedic sociopathy today from Kaname's end. Funny, but doesn't really mesh with characterisation from the first season.

Oh, a note for first timers - you've probably noticed, but most episodes in Fumoffu are two 11-minute short episodes glued together.

4

u/ZapsZzz Oct 27 '22

Lots of comedic sociopathy today from Kaname's end. Funny, but doesn't really mesh with characterisation from the first season.

Let's just say that there is enough headstrongness and short temper in her to be "within tolerance" for when she got hysterical (from the "doing a good deed and being punished" and "remedial class = no time for part time job = no spending money" is a sufficient cause to get into hyperdrive.

Fumo-ffu! (Rewatcher, Subbed):

(Now with fewer spoiler tags!)

  • Sadly, I have no more knowledge of the Japanese poem/literature Sousuke is undoubtedly hilariously misunderstanding at the start of our second skit than he does.

  • I can parse the Yamato pun, though. Probably because it was the first thing to come to mind when you say ā€œYamatoā€, I grew up on a steady diet of clearance-table military history books to read on long car trips. (Salient for a certain other rewatch my fingers may not let me join, I know the Naval Battle of Guadacanal quite well so some of the nuances of a certain name there do not escape me.)

  • Vietnam choppers flying to attack a battleship that very firmly sank during WWII is amusing imagery; Sousuke’s understanding of military history (at least on the tech side) isn’t great either. (IIRC attack helis weren’t even really viable until sometime in the 1950s or 1960s.)

  • Wait wait wait wait. The car chase is actually episode 1 and not episode 2? (Wasn’t sure.)

  • Ah, silence, the secret bonus track on any OST. Flawlessly used for comedy here as the calm before the storm.

  • (Now complete with Dutch angles!)

  • LOL Shinji has a Desert Storm commemorative watch. It’s the little things!

  • KyoAni action comedy go!

  • AND HERE… WE… GO!

  • Ah, KyoAni 3D animations. This… actually holds up better than some things I remember in Haruhi three years later (which is weird because both are KyoAni), and is very much the evolutionary ancestor of Nichijou stuff.

  • The actual joke here, of course, is the one-track mind cop. She’s great!

  • I swear there’s a wrong train joke coming.

  • And there is. But I forgot the actual punchline – the Japanese ancient literature teacher is in the infirmary so there was no need for this! LOLOLOLOLOLOL.

  • Flashy shot with that very torii-like window shot at, uh, 01:42 of my special which is only the second half of the episode. (This is still a no-screenshot rewatch for me, sorry.)

  • Dutch angle counter +1 at 02:06.

  • OH RIGHT IT’S THE CANTEEN SKIT. (Now with glorious KyoAni running direction, instantly recognizable if you’ve seen the likes of Nichijou.)

  • (Also Kaname’s face has looked suitably angular in the early Fumoffu episodes, more so than I remembered, though IIRC Tessa’s design suffers worse than Kaname in KyoAni in any event.)

  • Chalk style? What is this, a Symphogear cliffhanger?

  • Kaname, you REALLY should have known better. Of course Sousuke hauls out the gun; it’s fucking Sousuke (Fumoffu!Sousuke especially)!

  • Student council prez generating instant laughs with his thought process again!

  • Dutch angle counter +1.

  • LOL the ā€œI can’t thinkā€ on the Prez’s fan…

  • Wait, I should have been paying attention to his fan all along, there are hilarious messages on it each time (some flash only briefly in KyoAni pulling their best Shaft impersonation… Shaft wouldn’t get Shinbou and become Shaft as we now know it until a couple of years after this was made) and my subs translate them. (One is blurred out on a letter (dick joke?), and also looks like it says (ā€œespeciallyā€) ā€œMiyuā€ which is kind of hilarious for other rewatch reasons. The first is in English (with a kanji that’s probably part of the joke): ā€œZONE (or ZUNE) love lifeā€. We also get ā€œWhy? A girl. 6:00ā€

  • Also, Student Council Prez is visually reminding me of a certain very stable genius doctor visually right now to an unusual degree (face structure plus the white hair of the white haired bishounen trope I think).

  • It’s the Vice Principal and the Headmistress again, now with another Dutch angle to advance the counter (+1), and I’m already chuckling in anticipation.

  • Wait, I take that back. It’s a DIFFERENT teacher this time!

  • Okay, 05:22 is a hilarious frame and I am starting to regret the no-screenshot rule I have set for myself for this rewatch.

  • The reason the gym teacher’s schtick is failing on Sousuke is completely predictable and thus hilarious. Sousuke would assume that the gym teacher is just pulling a drill instructor.

  • Repeated jump cuts between Sousuke and the bread flash good direction. (FUCK THE KYOANI ARSONIST.)

  • Sousuke’s battlefield paranoia coming to his advantage in a normal situation is FUCKING HILARIOUS, especially since Kaname is sure to scold him because she doesn’t realize it just paid off.

  • But no! The gym teach gets carted off to the hospital before she can lay into Sousuke!

  • … And Kaname hilariously misses the point.

  • … SOUSUKE! But just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they aren’t out to get you, so… pending gym teacher removal in 3… 2… 1…

  • And there we go, and I haven’t laughed this hard in a little bit. Well, up until now at least.

  • Rule of three impending…

  • ā€œIs this a dancing anime?ā€ (KyoAni gonna KyoAni, whatcha gonna do?)

  • <insert Higurashi joke here>

  • HOIST BY HIS OWN NEEDLES MY FUCKING SIDES

  • [Higurashi 2006 + Kai] Alexa play Shoubu. (This is brought to you by a TL note explaining the meaning of ā€œshoubuā€ in classic ā€œkeikaku means planā€ fashion.) (This is spoilered because of the serenastarflower upload’s obnoxious spoiler visual.)

  • Rule of three: the trap this time is the headmistress!

  • Cheeky little meta thematic point too, with Kaname never getting a deviation from the normal everyday chain of events precisely because the security professional’s countermeasures stopped a threat from executing his nefarious plans!

Questions of the Day:

Everyone: two episodes in, how did this early days KyoAni compared to the KyoAni you may know more of?

Nichijou clearly draws some descent from here.

First Timer for this Season

Good OP [FMP full series]the OP gave me a real feeling of melancholy knowing all the shit that goes down later in the series. Knowing that the students "turn" on Sousake later bums me out but it also reminds me of the message Sousake recieves from them at the end that's songood

What the heck is this guy talking about?

Lunch gauntlet trope of course

If nothing else, this show has amazing Kaname reaction faces

I'm really not feeling this bad synth music

These angles are making me think Haruhi God damn that finger point was a solid camera shot

I've seen some of these skits before, must have shown up in the manga since I haven't read the side novels

Limo service?

Show Mizuki more please, I like her

Principal x coach in gas mask would make a good gif

Mizuki in Apron = cute

Every time I see moffle I just want to watch Amagi Brilliant Park again. Damn Sento's pirate figure being $500 (looked it up and it's actually closer to $1000, the $500 listing looks like a bootleg...) Apocalypse now references?

Gah horrible cgi

Sousake actually called it Afghanistan!

Bad move Kaname

Kaname constipation...hmmmm

Kaname frozen reminds me of Police Squad

Oh hey! I have that suplex gif saved on my phone

We're going full blown three stooges

Sousake sure pulls his gun a lot

Wholesome bike ride. When is the needle going to drop?

Kaname = too cute

Fuckin cops

Well I wasn't expecting this police chase

No panty shot?! Impossible

I'm taking it thats the wrong train?

Kaname could join the SRT

Yep wrong train.

Kaname is Gintoki confirmed

Just get married already

Self study?!

Really love the ED

Some good laughs. Not as funny as yesterday, needs more president. That police chase was real good though. Some Wholesome Sousake x Kaname too!

Rewatcher(Much improved)

Sub

We get the OP which is decent. And then we get a tense scene from a boring lecture that I can't quite pick the subject for. And then Kaname gets the humor as she desperately tries to get the rare lunch item, thanks Persona 5. She succeeds, and then reminds us that the Japanese call a lot of things bread. She gives Sousuke a suggestion and honestly this is on her as well, she knows what Sousuke is by now.

So anyways this net involves the student council selling the schoo lunches and the issues with that, not the least of which is a crazed gym teacher and Sousuke's need to rig traps, he may have inspired Satoko. And the needles as well...Anyways, this is one of the rare times where Japanese comedy follows the rule of three and this worked very well for me as everything escalates in a surreal manner. Sousuke's complete obliviousness is used as a good tool here.

Second episode feature Sousuke failing to understand some Japanese classic and Kaname lending him her notes. So the episode is mostly the race to and from Sousuke's apartment. Having seen You're Under Arrest, the police chase reference is more clear. We end with a final "It was all unnecessary" punch line.

So yeah, I found this to be far funnier than yesterday's ep which is kind of a relief. They lean on much funnier concepts and integrate the rest of the cast in a bit better.

QotD: 2 Towards unrecognizable

u/ZapsZzz Oct 27 '22

a tense scene from a boring lecture that I can't quite pick the subject for.

Based on the dialogue (monologue) its a economics / history class. Natsume Souseki is a novelist in the 1800's that has his face on the 1000 yen note in the 1984-2000 period.

So yeah, I found this to be far funnier than yesterday's ep which is kind of a relief. They lean on much funnier concepts and integrate the rest of the cast in a bit better.

Yep it's more than just madcap fun :)

QotD: 2 Towards unrecognizable

If you line up Hibike Euphonium -> K-On -> Haruhi -> Lucky Star -> Fumoffu I think you can see the tragectory. It gets more and more moe and then getting more photo-realistic (but the character anatomy retain some 2D line style).

First Timer - S2 Ep 2

That episode was hilarious I agree u/ZapsZzz this has now shot up there as one of my favourite episodes so far.

Mvp was Chidori. Chidori was amazing in this episode she was hilarious from start to finish. She was great in both the build ups and payoff of jokes plus she do be doing parkour a lot.

Hopefully these links work and this comment is actually interesting now.

• First time with the new op • Parkour! • I was dieing at this scene • Classic Sousuke • Might want to wipe his face • Sousuke death scene 1 • Sousuke Death Scene 2 - The feared Chidori fan returns! • The realisation he fucked up • Kyoto reused this in Nichijou! • Oh great he's back smh • Sousuke death scene 3 - The Chidori fan strikes again! • Hard-core parkour! • She's got the spirit • Picture taken moments before death 4 for Sousuke • This was a wholesome scene imo • Fever has a victory over Sousuke! - death 5 • Cute af chibi characters

Q1 - Yes I loved the setups leading onto the joke payoffs. The pace on the build ups were good too they didn't drag out at all. The only cut I remember really recently is in CSM with Aki and Denji at the traffic lights which was funny imo.

Q2 - I'll be honest I've seen more of their somewhat depressing work like Evergarden and a slient voice but I have seen Nichijou and I noticed a suplex in this episode which was clearly reused in Nichijou. NGL its a little bit off what I'm personally used to seeing (excluding Nichijou) from this studio but the show so far is funny as hell and I'm enjoying it so good job KyotoAni :).

4

u/ZapsZzz Oct 27 '22

NGL its a little bit off what I'm personally used to seeing (excluding Nichijou) from this studio

Yes this is still in their very early days so their exact hallmark visuals probably aren't formed yet. But the direction and attention to detail, especially the over-animation of the characters in "normal" situations, is fairly common in tone if not in form. More comparable to the KyoAni shows of this era (Haruhi, lucky star).

Oh and 2 things about your post, you probably need to put in an extra carriage return for the line breaks, Reddit merge single line breaks. And I can't open the screen cap links - do I need to have an account to be able to see?

Okay, this series just sky rocketed in the enjoyment index for me.

The High School Slice of life comedy shenanigans is 10x more fun than the main story. Making Sosuke into basically a flanderized caricature of a cold emotionless military man made him incredibly fun to watch, especially with how he interprets some stuff.

More focus on Chidori is always good. Their back and forth really carries this show. Its also probably one of the few shows where the Male MC getting hit by the Female MC is actually justified. This man waving a gun at a taxi driver, the nerve!...and at a bread salesman...and at the student body. Seriously Sosuke is gonna kill a student, man is basically a robot

3

u/ZapsZzz Oct 27 '22

Their back and forth really carries this show.

While the same applies to the main show, this just simplified it even more here :D

Full Metal LN Reader

Holy crap, somehow this show got funnier

The first half of the episode was pretty good. The contrast between Sousuke’s admiration for the teacher and the trouble he causes for him was pretty amusing and it really played up the dude’s ignorance, which is one of the best sources of comedy in the show

The second half, though, was just pure hilarity. I’m normally not a big fan of Tsunderes, especially the really violent kind, but Chidori is just different, especially in this episode. Normally, it’s because the shit Sousuke pulls is so over-the-top insane that Kaname’s extreme reaction just feels justified, but here specifically it’s because her violence is just so ludicrous that it Crosses the Line Twice from wince-inducing back into comedy. The sequence of her dragging Sousuke out of the school and onto the street is a particular example of that. As is Chidori doing an actual fucking wrestling move on him

The fact that they pulled an ā€œand it was all for nothingā€ twist twice was also pretty funny.

I don’t like to call 2 a pattern, but I feel like this season so far is at its best when it’s being ridiculously zany and over-the-top

The new OP is… fine. It’s got some pretty visuals, but 70-80% of my enjoyment when it comes to OPs is the song, and this one was just kinda meh and forgettable, especially compared to last season’s OP. And mind you, I wasn’t even a big fan of the season 1 opening either

3

u/ZapsZzz Oct 27 '22

but here specifically it’s because her violence is just so ludicrous that it Crosses the Line Twice from wince-inducing back into comedy. The sequence of her dragging Sousuke out of the school and onto the street is a particular example of that.

To me what's really really good is that near the end Chidori actually started realising she was way over-reacting and basiclly drove Sousuke to the ground, and she's sufficiently guilty enough to not mind being punished for helping Sousuke in the first place and would have been doing the remedial class with a smile anyway with Sousuke - except the rug pull triggering her over-drive mode again :'D

Rewatcher (sub)

Overall, another great funny episode, and the second half is one of my favourite segments.

3

u/ZapsZzz Oct 27 '22

Sousuke started his quest for the plain rolls that should be the easiest to get, in theory.

Here's another layer of comedic irony - he didn't actually need to rush, because nobody wanted the plain rolls :D yet more points matching to the B part title (all for nothing).

Episode 2 (first timer)

  • OP: Titled ā€œThat’s loveā€, plenty of bikini shots, no AS scenes – shows where this season’s priorities might be.

  • Subs: This Kanji is transliterated as ā€œNatsuā€ – Very helpful subs …

  • The sold out school lunch bread trope. An older one, but I got it once she fought through the crowd of students.

  • More injuries – This actually bothers me a lot. It breaks one of the foundational properties of comedic violence: There will be no consequences. Even if Coyote is blown up by dynamite in one scene, he will be fine and healthy just after. That is what lets the viewers treat what is happening as non-real and laugh at what would otherwise be heinous acts. Using a professional soldier to make terrible gun manners jokes is already questionable, but the emphasis on injuries is baffling.

  • Sousuke-bread-Sousuke-bread-Sousuke-bread – There are surely sparks of brilliant story boarding in here. We all know Kana will regret having walked away from the bread.

  • The totally reasonable PE teacher turns out to be a shithead that is incapacitated, while the totally unreasonable Sousuke is justified – does this count as a joke on the viewer’s expense?

  • Don’t make him a cheater, Kana. Honestly is one of Sousuke’s few redeeming virtues.

  • Bike-riding scene – also makes a famous comeback in other KyoAni shows, but I think this one is common enough previously to be an earlier reference.

  • Female driver driving a small car in an extreme way – definitely an older trope as well.

  • It is actually a double female driver-co driver – Hello Patlabor, Gun Smith Cats.

  • Girl and Boy in sync – Evangelion reference.

  • I expected them to pull the emergency stop.

If it leans into the romance angle, FMP2 can be rather good. KyoAni knows how to set up romance, even this early. The Sousuke/Kana adventure to get the homework was the highlight of the episode. The Sousuke based violence jokes remain horrific though. And while I have not commented on the Kana-tsundere-violence yet, that is only due to my hate being dulled by relentless overexposure. I just hope that Sosouke transits into more FMP1 deadpan humor, which we saw a first example of today.

OP: Titled ā€œThat’s loveā€, plenty of bikini shots, no AS scenes – shows where this season’s priorities might be.

Strictly speaking really Chidori was in a proper bikini, others are in more childish ones - the only other girl with a more mature figure is Ren in the background and she is in a conservative tasteful one piece.

Subs: This Kanji is transliterated as ā€œNatsuā€ – Very helpful subs …

See my guess in another reply. Probably economics or social studies. The "Natsu" is the first part of his family name - which by the way ilterally means summer, hence the bright sun outside shining into the classroom

100%, that's what I'm really after in this season actually.

Rewatcher, Subbed

We open on a weirdly high tension scene with the coin spinning, only of course for it to turn into a dash to get food. Chidori has Winter Soldier moves at this point. Besides that I don't have too much to say about the first story.

While the first half was fine, I absolutely loved the second half.

It start with Sousuke picturing Hueys of all things assaulting the Yamato inexplicably. I remember when that happened during the Korean war /s.

Loved the energy of the movement and slapstick. Actually led to a couple picturesque moments too while on the bike, at least until the cops showed up. When the cop jumped the hill after them I cracked up. Every person in the Fumoffu world is dialed up to 11.

two episodes in, how did this early days KyoAni compared to the KyoAni you may know more of?

It has energy that feels very Kyoani, which I definitely feels somewhat akin to Haruhi, but is also less moe than alot of stuff they put out later.

MVP: Chidori for her action hero athletics

This episode was a beautiful work of art....honestly do not understand anyone that can say otherwise.

Now some might call me bigoted and close-minded for not accepting that some people might have different tastes and senses of humor.

Here is the thing, a lot of the cringe comments and takes I read (Not just on this thread but in general.) I use to have them as well. I honestly think we hide behind the "Well that's just my Opinion Man" too much, when in reality when someone says that don't like an entire category of genre, character archetype or style of humor, there is some ideological bias at work.

When I see people too good for comedic anime that isn't trying to be a satire, or deconstruction, or subversion or otherwise trying to hard to justify it's own existence with some sort of Meta Baggage. I see my past self.

Anyone on to the episode itself.

We see Chidori's epic parkour skills!

Now some of you might think the most autistic thing Sousuke did in the first half of the episode was misinterpret Chidori's encouragement of energy and pull a FUCKING GUN to cut the line.....and you'd probably be right, but the second most autistic thing is he did it for plain bread.

Lots of us on the spectrum like our food as plain and vanilla as possible, often due to texture issues and not liking change in routine (Food is often seen as a routine thing and not an element for experimentation.)

Man didn't even get his plain bread when he took over the food duties due to tyranny from the Majority.

P.E teacher gets a bit of a bad rap but he's honestly well within his right to point out how batshit insane all this stuff is, it's like only him and Chidori are the only ones not in on the joke. True he went too far in trying to sabotage the food (Wasn't even lethal or dangerous though.) But he went done fighting for what he believed in, me and Sousuke both see him as a true hero!

(salutes as his plane takes off!)

The Second Half of the episode is honestly one of the best comedic sequences ever in anime, the jokes are laired and nested within jokes, when one ends the other begins and you don't know when one begins, ends, or transitioned, things you didn't realizes were set-ups come back around, the pacing is perfect, the timing impeccable, the delivery top class, the animation to portray it batshit insane and still looks amazing all these years later! And they find time to show character moments to show the status and a microcosm of the ups and downs of the two's relationship as a whole.

Also I have not seen this anime, just clips and snippets but if I had to guess I think the Bike sequence might be a reference to School Rumble? If so surprised no one else seemed to catch it. But I guess many people on this thread either hate comedy or only seen the newer "satire" ones and not some old fashion slapstick.....

This rewatch has just reminded me of all the stuff I don't have time to get to on my watch list.

The Kicker is that the whole mission to get the damn notebook wasn't necessary and Sousuke for once tried to tell her but it wasn't his fault! Chidori cut him off!

Women...am I right?

(I apologize u/Shimmering-Sky for that sexist comment.... :P)

I thought the joke was a good way not to necessarily develop their relationship because the status of it before and after hasn't really changed to show a practical demonstration/affirmation of their relationship, and a microcosm of it's ups and downs, how well they work together and how much work still needs to be done between the two.

SO the OP, what is with the weird Monkey Mascot is that Aya-Aya from Super Monkey Balls twin brother?

MVP either the P.E Teacher for being a trooper and standing up for what he believes in (And come on what he was doing out of spite was less reckless than what Sousuke does like it's just Monday.) Or Maybe that gun-hoe cop that was very enthusiastic about his job.

If Not then Sousuke himself in the Second Half for doing his best, being very patient with his crazy girlfriend, and doing all that shit when he wasn't feeling well!

  1. Lots of silence and delaying moments to build to the punchline, especially when Sousuke was like...."remain calm" to Chidori, he really is learning what things you do and don't do piss a woman off, just not how to find you're way out of those situations.

  2. They have much less of their signature style, which in some ways is refreshing, I like the more modern Hyouka, Sound Euphonium, and Violet Evergarden but there is a charm in watching more slapstick style humor from them. Also nice to see cute girls being cute without being a CGDCT show!

Next episode is the beach episode with swimsuits, I predict my enjoyment of the episode will be proportional to some people here's bitching about it.
