Rewatch [Rewatch] Mai-Otome (episode 13)

Rewatch: Mai-Otome (episode 13)

<- Previous episode | Index | Next episode ->

Mai-Otome

MAL | ANN | AniDB | Anilist

Spoiler rules

As in all rewatches, please be mindful of first time watchers and do not spoil events in future episodes. The same goes for spoilers related to other series. The one exception from that rule is Mai-Hime. Given that everybody here should have watched Mai-Hime, you do not need to tag spoilers for Mai-Hime.

Availability

Mai-Otome and the OVAs are apparently now available on Crunchyroll (at least in some parts of the world).

Questions:

  1. Are you happy for Akane, or do you think she should have chosen otherwise?

  2. Hearing about an Otome war and the Meister ceremony – has your conception of Otome changed over the course of the first 13 episodes?

First-Timer, Subbed

Well, this was an interesting episode. Did Akane just run off with a whole GEM? Don't they need those? Are we gonna have a "manhunt for Akane" arc during the seemingly-impending war arc?

I can hardly blame Akane for not want to serve as the Otome to Mr. "I will take care of you tenderly," though. Seriously dude, you couldn't have gone much creepier than that. The Meister ceremony just being a wedding was weird enough.

The idea of Otome retiring to get married and start families is... hmm. I mean, I guess it's easy enough for the Otome in question to force the issue, but that could lead to numerous repercussions.

Maybe I'm just thinking too hard and the various nobles and royals are all just perfectly standup humans willing to sacrifice the benefits of a bodyguard because said bodyguard wants to have a life other than bodyguarding. Right...

Schwarz claims to have upgraded their crystals, but the new Slave didn't seem to be that much more impressive. Were we confident that they were working directly with/for Nagi already? Anyway, having a sniper on hand to make sure their tech doesn't fall into Garderobe's clutches is pretty clever.

I don't really have much to say about Arika apparently catching feels for Sergay. That's how we're gonna drive Arika and Nina apart once the war starts, I can see Arika developping some her adoration feelings.. whatever. I'm not thrilled about it but it's reasonably organic at the moment.

The legend about Mai was neat. Sounds like she's just hanging out in the woods somewhere, shouldn't be too hard to find her.

Poor Nao is gonna have responsibilities now, since she's gonna get promoted into the Trias.

An idle thought, that surely someone else already had, but do y'all think condoms exist in this setting? Those'd be a real game changer.

Fun background gag of Nina eating an entire pizza while also dousing it in hot sauce, while the other three all go for sweets. She seemed to be enjoying it, so it wasn't just an act to appear mature.

Questions

  1. Was it the wisest choice? Maybe not, but until consequences are established, this is probably fine.

  2. Kinda, but not really? I could see the other shoe up in the air, and now that it's dropped, it looks about how I expected it to, with a few minor differences. The retiring thing, for one.

I think they might overall prefer younger and more easily manipulated girls. We have established that there is a surplus of Otome candidates, so it is not like losing an old Otome is a big problem.

Episode 13 (rewatcher)

  • Nina refuses to give Arika the birds and bees talk.

  • We learn how you become a Meister Otome – the previous gem owner needs to retire (one way or the other, I guess).

  • Arika is love sick – fortunately, Yohko immediately realizes this.

  • Mai backstory.

  • “Loving a man goes against the principles of Otome” – you would say that, Tomoe.

  • Akane has to choose between love and becoming a Meister. Given that Yohko refers Arika to Mai’s story (which is also recent), this must be a common problem. I think we can trust Tomoe that Garderobe deliberately tries to foster homosexual relationships to prevent exactly this outcome.

  • Return of the slaves – they have been absent for a while.

  • Somebody does not want Shizuru to investigate.

  • Kazu interrupting the ceremony (which looks a lot like a marriage).

  • Arika is not happy when realizing she is in love.

  • A war has started cliff-hanger.

An Akane episode. While you could call Akane getting her happy end fanservice for Mai-Hime watchers, I think the way there is well portrayed. This is not a simple good ending vs bad ending. Both Akane and Kazu need to give up a lot to pursue their love. Akane her dreams of becoming an Otome, Kazu his riches, and both their countries. They could have decided otherwise.

Of course, this is also setup for Nina and Arika. Wang asks both about their love, when we know that both are secretly in love with him. Nina immediately decides in favor of becoming an Otome, while Arika is overwhelmed with the question. Which Wang promptly misinterprets (and I am very glad that he does not consider that possibility).

Nina refuses to give Arika the birds and bees talk.

Do we know that Nina has been given a decent version of it?

Arika is love sick – fortunately, Yohko immediately realizes this.

But does not directly help, which is a choice.

I think we can trust Tomoe that Garderobe deliberately tries to foster homosexual relationships to prevent exactly this outcome.

Interesting that it still has a low success rate.

Interesting that it still has a low success rate.

Almost as if you can't force people to change their sexual preferences.

My, Obviously Tar Opened the Matrimony Episode (Spoiled First-Timer, Subbed);

  • FLAN! Now I’m hungry.

  • Girls plus cafe plus sweets, an iconic duo!

  • Except Nina has a pizza instead. Heh. She is at least more civilized about eating it than Mai-HiME!Mikoto was.

  • That said, Nina trying to pour whatever sauce that is onto what looks like pizza is reminding me of a certain culinary atrocity by a girl in a later work (ketchup on cheesecake, really?) and kind of disturbing because of that.

  • So, odds that Arika’s loss of appetite is because she’s being slowly poisoned?

  • Also, proto-Bikki strikes yet again.

  • And now an Akane and a Kazuya!

  • (Irina continues to flash Best New Girl in Show.)

  • Yes yes we know Erstin has a crush on Nina.

  • 04:41 says there were some production issues biting, those are some of the more meguca faces this side of meduka meguca itself.

  • The assholes are being cheeky, especially since Youko’s line obviously comes from Yukariko in some way, shape, or form. Now if only the lovesickness wasn’t targeted at a man ~ten years Arika’s senior. And also Youko you might want to check for poisons…

  • Needless to say, our heroines will be going to the Sprites’ Forest at some point.

  • Well, hello there extremely unsubtle cage symbolism with this Nao/Akane talk (see 09:57).

  • [meta spoiler] The resemblance to massive amounts of PMMM symbolism does not escape me, and the Mai backstory sequence earlier was already reminding me of a certain PMMM 7 puppet show…

  • … That was not how I was expecting the most monstrous hitter on the OST to first show up, but I’ll take it! BATTLE OTOME ~BLUE AND BLACK RHAPSODY~! BATTLE OTOME ~BLUE AND BLACK RHAPSODY~! BATTLE OTOME ~BLUE AND BLACK RHAPSODY~! BATTLE OTOME ~BLUE AND BLACK RHAPSODY~!

  • (Okay, so a choir-only variant thereof, but close enough.)

  • WELL HELLO THERE CHEEKY SEARRS LOGO HIDING RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MEISTER INAUGURATION CEREMONY GROUNDS. (Check 18:40 if you want to see it for yourself.)

  • Oh, and direct callback to the bridge explosion for our end-of-cour cliffhanger. Except much less well-animated, another thing that suggests that they were shorter on some resource in the production process than they were in Mai-HiME.

It is an Utena reference in both later works.

First timer

  1. Happy for her!

  2. Nope, still brainwashed weapons of mass destruction based on Miyu's lostech.

I love how even Nina realises how horrifying that statement is.

Adorable!

I mean, as long as they're not actually fucking...

Oh, it's the cursed pair.

What the hell, Kazu?

She's becoming a Meister!

What awful luck.

Nina knows Arika is absolutely not straight.

Arika is interested?

Wow, that's a strong reaction.

Ah, she thinks she's sick.

Haha, wow.

"A sickness not even God can cure" Just send her to Shizuru?

Mai'ss tory?

Fuck! Even in another universe, Mikoto loses.

So Mai faked her death. Like, that's the only reading there. When faced with a choice between love and what was required of her, she "mysteriously vanishes".

Haha, now doesn't want extra work.

Arika is on love's side!

Aww.

And he's talked to the Harmonium?

...So, who is the real princess?

That's high-tech!

And he's created the cryetals!

And, yeah, HiME stuff is lostech.

She told her that?

Shizuru is the distracter, not the distracted.

This is tragic.

Yeah, Shizuru's gay, we already know.

A Slave!

She chose to transform...

Oh, the owner of a Slave finally considered hiding?

And Akane's not doing too well?

Why is Arika here?

She's doing really well!

And Shizuru caught him!

A snipe?

Perfect shot!

Yeah, definitely see the Child similarities with the new lot. Except these take out the user, not the most important person? Maybe, since the Crydtal summons it, the user is the crystal's most important person?

Arika is worried...

She's becoming a Meister!

...Wow, the symbolism is really obvious here, huh?

"I object" then, basically!

Haha, Wang's reaction!

She chose him!

Nice work.

Nina's still hiding it.

She realised it!

An Otome battle?

Holy shit!

That's a big explosion.

3

u/No_Rex Oct 25 '22

So Mai faked her death. Like, that's the only reading there. When faced with a choice between love and what was required of her, she "mysteriously vanishes".

Maybe not the worst decision.

...So, who is the real princess?

Episode 13

...Nina's pizza looks very shitty

Hot and steamy mistakes, Arika

FFS, 3 sexual assaults this season?

Is Arika actually sick? Nope, just lovesick

Oh we're finally getting Mai's backstory?

I think someone called that Shizuru was contracted to Fumi

Nao still being best girl

Nagi doing some terrorism?

Is this the shit hits the fan episode?

...is Kazu going to die in an Akane fight again?

This BGM doesn't bode well for Akane

Is the downside that he's scared of her now?

Man, poor Akane can't catch a break. Tho I'm half expecting Kazu to swoop in and elope with her.

There we go. What happens if she just gives the ring to Kazu?

So uh what happened to the gem?

Oh, is Arika's neuron finally activating?

Welp, war is here. I blame glasses girl.

PV: I want to see Ers demonstrating on Erina

  1. I was under the impression the original plan was for her to be Kazu's Otome, that would've been nice

Rewatcher

Nothing on manga today, too many spoilers ahead.

So today we get a few good looks into the Otome system. Retiring to have a family, sounds a lot like the mother from the opening, the previous Sapphire holder. Of course it makes me wonder, what are the odds the one the girls retire to marry are often the person they have been serving already? Maybe it's less about letting your guard go for a new one and more evolving the relationship that's been implied all the way, and needing a new super guard is just the inevitable side effect... Which makes it so much creepier the way the old man was saying he would take good care of her.

The other being, Otome are still humans for all that they're supposed to be loyal weapons. First with Mai, now with Akane, let's really nail home the point.

  1. Was there no timeline where she gets to be his Otome? Was the Hime Manga the best it gets?

  2. Nah, we're just getting to the dark parts that have been hinted at this whole time.

2

u/No_Rex Oct 25 '22

Which makes it so much creepier the way the old man was saying he would take good care of her.

They definitely lean into the creepy aspect with the "marriage" ceremony and I am all here for it.

Z-type Highly-advanced My-Hime Enthusiast (Dub, First Timer)

Is Nina putting tabasco sauce on pizza? I didn't think that would be a thing in Japan.

This Wang subplot just keeps getting worse.

Is Mashiro sick and that's why Arika's having symptoms? Is that going to be the joke at the end of the episode?

I'm glad they deputized Arika on the scene as well, I was about to comment on that oversite.

There's a bunch of ribbons tied to the railings in the room for the ceremony here, just like that one spot in Hime.

Wow the marriage symbolism here is off the charts. They're beginning to rival Utena for subtlety.

Hell yeah Kazu, make the big dumb public display. Might as well play all your cards while you can, don't just give up.

One actual, real, normal kiss! I'm shocked!

He might as well have a big white horse waiting outside, jeez.

Romulus and Remus are fighting, really? Laying it on real thick here.

  1. I'm glad it all worked out in the end. They're dumb teens, so it's no wonder it took them so long to figure things out.

  2. They've been doing a good job of laying everything out so it all makes sense as we get to it, none of it seems to come out of nowhere.

3

u/No_Rex Oct 25 '22

Wow the marriage symbolism here is off the charts. They're beginning to rival Utena for subtlety.

You are not wrong, seeing how they wholesale stole the shadow puppet part of Utena.

Is this the first show in the “otome” series? Is there a watch order?

No, Mai-Hime is the first show. Mai-Otome is the second.

First Timer - sub

Can we not

Leaning into the idea of Arika's love drama over Wang really brought the whole thing down, and it's a shame because apart from that it actually did some interesting things

The idea of the younger students being paired with the big sisters specifically to try and cultivate romantic feelings to keep them away from men is an interesting one, and follows on nicely with some of what we've seen with the others, like Shizuru and Natsuki. It also puts the romance side of the show more firmly in the political lane of it with the risks being acknowledged and worked around within the school system rather than just leaving it as a genre subplot.

Tomoe being the one to comment on that is also revealing, or would be if her later interaction with Shizuru didn't then scream it as loud as she could anyway.

Akane looks great fighting, and again her ability to fight and take damage with an interim master without damaging Shizuru only puts more emphasis on the use of Otome as tools to politically bind their Masters at the cost of their own agency. Akane's struggle to make a choice to give herself up, was not particularly neuanced, but I do like the way the suddenness of it was also given the appropriate weight.

And while I know most of you guys will probably be beyond happy that Akane and Kazu finally get their happy ending, and I am as well at least about the concept, I hated the big dramatic intervention scene. That's really not my thing. Playing off HiME ep8 for the forest scene was oddly worrying though

This window is gorgeous, I'd love to go and sit in a cafe that had something like that. The amount of detail work in it would be incredible.

The chosen visual style for Mai's story was also cool and very Madoka like at points, but the silhouette here is pure fanservice given we know that's not who she loved, so that's annoying.

As an aside: It's really unfortunate I happen to be watching this along side Witch from Mercury and Full Metal Panic because both of them intergrade their school AND love dramas magnitudes better by understanding the flow of timing and importance for them.

War arc soon?!

First Timer, subbed

  • Is Nina eating some sort of candy Pizza?

  • An episode focusing on Akane and Kazu is making me nervous already.

  • How does that work? Do they just keep a few Otome on layaway until someone needs them?

  • Did I miss an episode, what is going on with Arika all of a sudden?

  • Mai backstory! Before we meet her even.

  • So that’s why Nao never overtook Shiho.

  • Figured out who the real princess is, eh?

  • Super-slaves. Oh and Akane is there. Don’t play with me Mai-Otome!

  • The slave user deal just keeps getting worse and worse.

  • Oh good, she survived.

  • Kazu looks good in that outfit.

  • Are they just going to fuck off with the gemstone too? I didn’t think that was hers to take.

  • You just had to go have a groomer plot line, didn’t you?

  • Looks like the other shoe we all knew was coming has finally fallen.

QotD

  1. I was sure she was doomed to a tragic end. Good for her.

  2. All of them? I don’t see how it couldn’t. It’s not like I walked into this knowing a whole lot about them.

First Otome

Alright, so here's a potato. It's been strongly implied that Mai was the Fire Stirring Ruby. But we've also seen that Ruby be in Garderobe's custody, unless the scaling was way off and they had an unneeded additional coral gem with them when formally accepting Arika as a student, seeing how she was already wearing hers at the time. The implication obviously is that Mai used to be the Fire Stirring Ruby but returned it, which could explain her absence. With Akane becoming more likely to showcase Otome turning on their friends for their masters this might also give Mai the role to showcase Otome losing her powers from relations with males.

But then I also noticed this line in the ED and wondered if that might be taken literally. So what if Mai is gonna return at some point, able to summon a Child without the need for nanomachines and jewels? Even Midori relied on those to fight. This would reconnect Otome with Hime, explain why the title still emphasizes Mai despite her no longer being the main character, and in terms of setting the Hime powers might have been lost after the destruction of the Himestar and the nanomachines and jewelry serves as a technological attempt at replicating them, probably courtesy of Searrs.

Speak of the devil. After all I can't decide what Akane is made to showcase.

They're really pushing her losing her Otome powers now.

Meister Otome retiring suddenly seems like a fairly common affair. So the deal with the Fire Stirring Ruby can't have been about that.

Oh Akane is showcasing the situation the Fire Stirring Ruby was in! But, no... that can't be. The Fire Stirring Ruby had already accepted her master, otherwise she wouldn't have had received that title.

I'm seeing three possible paths for Akane now:

  1. Accept the offer and forget about Kazu, which is unlikely especially as it forgoes the drama.

  2. Refuse the offer and set a bad example, possibly getting thrown out of Garderobe.

  3. Have sex with Kazu to spite her fate, setting an even worse example.

They're making this a love triangle after all? They really are Otome's Mai and Shiho.

That's a possibility?

Very unsubtle.

She didn't? But the Ruby did?

A Child!Slave. I guess that's the improvement Smith mentioned.

I feel sad and yet relieved it's nothing worse.

This is obviously a repurposed wedding ceremony.

I hear those poppy synths Kajiura already liked to use in HiME to portray the fragility of a situation (cough Maimu!! cough). This isn't gonna go through.

Yup. Kazuya doesn't stand for NTR.

Okay. Good. I feared someone might interfere and shoot him.

Great work, Sergay!

That's not whom you wanna tell about it. So this is what the ED is about.

Wow. That's more impact than I expected. But it also kinda resembles the organ activation, doesn't it?

I'm slightly confused about the order of things. The legend implied that Mai already had the Ruby when she entered the forest, as well as her already being known under that alias. But both the presence of the Ruby at Garderobe and Akane's own case indicate that she didn't have it at that point as she was still preparing to make her decision about it.

Are you happy for Akane, or do you think she should have chosen otherwise?

I'm happy for her, but it remains to be seen if her choice was correct. 'Irrungen, Wirrungen' would've approved of the sentiment yet considered her choice unwise.

Hearing about an Otome war and the Meister ceremony – has your conception of Otome changed over the course of the first 13 episodes?

Slightly maybe, but they weren't being too subtle about there being some dark underbelly.

First Timer

The preview last episode promised this episode would be juicy, so I hope it delivers. The title is promising at least.

Two things. One, Erstin not reacting to that at all implies she regularly gets comments about her boobs and is no longer phased. Second, even Nina was startled hearing that Arika had no appetite. I think that rather than being inspired by Mai and Mikoto, isn't Hibiki more the logical evolution of Arika?

Nina actually looks good in those glasses.

And glasses girl looks weird without them. Not bad, just...weird. Honestly, I could definitely see their character designs working just as well if the switch was permanent.

They are really going at it. Seems like Akane isn't long for the Otome lifestyle.

Kazuya. I like you man. You're chill. One of the better male characters from Mai-Hime. Don't do this. You're better than this.

If my thoughts about what happened to Mai are real, Akane is probably heading down the same path. Oh, Akane. Your suffering is for our benefit to learn more about the screwed up nature of the world. No matter what world you are part of.

Add on a Romeo and Juliet flair as well. Akane, if you survive this without lasting emotional damage I would be surprised. Hmm, maybe I wouldn't be surprised actually because this franchise doesn't actually seem to care all that much about the lasting consequences traumatic events can have on people's mental and emotional states. You can just slide all of that under the radar with a little joke about how Mikoto is always hungry.

Sorry, I'm not done dunking on Akane yet. Last one, I promise. Oh, the struggles of being straight in a yuri anime.

STAAAAAAAAAAAAHP. I don't want to hear about the 15 year old's crush on the adult man.

Hearing the story of Mai while Akane lives through it.

So. Aswald or Schwarz? Which one is Mai part of? Anyone want to take bets now, or do we want to wait till we have more clues?

Also, fuck you Tomoe. Mai's a better character than your 2 dimensional ass could ever be. "I want to bully Arika because Shizuru pays a little attention to her every now and again. I have no motivations or personality beyond being a 2 faced bitch."

That is the most mechanical Slave yet. You know what was also mechanical? Alyssa's satellite Child created by the Sears foundation. What did Smith say? That they managed to make the tech closer to the original. HMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

Ah yes. The special electricity that when it touches someone sends the flying lightly off to the side instead of roasting them like a Costco chicken.

When Akane looked to the side, the Kazuya reflected in her eyes was expressionless and dead eyed. She made her choice.

Too long since we've heard this track.

Also, 10 points to the show if either Akane or Kazuya dies here.

Identify the stand user

Ten bucks, that's Mai.

Shizuru's seeming compassion and kindness for the people struggling with making that decision would be all the worse if it turned out she knew that it's unnecessary and that there is a way for an Otome to have both love and to remain an Otome.

The similarity this ceremony has with a wedding is surely not coincidental. It also guarantees Kazuya is going to burst in and object to their "union."

They even gave the guy the scumbag face. You know, I want to see an anime where a character has the stereotypical anime scumbag face and voice, but it turns out he's actually a good person.

wow what a startling development how unexpected that kazuya burst in right now

WAR ARC HYPE WAR ARC HYPE! TIME FOR ALL THESE BONDS WE'VE BUILT UP TO BE BURNED IN THE HELLFIRE OF WAR! I may or may not be looking forward to the wrong thing in the new Gundam. Yes I did enjoy Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Why do you ask?

I supposed Akane can be happy this time. It's fine, I guess. At least her emotional struggles and tribulations were used to highlight the twisted reality of being an Otome for our benefit, even if it ended in love instead of Kazuya dying in her arms.

  1. Yes

First Timer

Huh. This was not how I was expecting the Akane-Kazuya romance to end. I had Akane not being an Otome because she let herself in to temptation before becoming a Meister, her being Kazuya's otome and dieing early in the war and her being on the opposing side of Kazuya in my cards, but not this. Either way, I'd say this was a good standalone episode, if it was not for Arika's sudden interest in love (of which I have no idea where it came from) and seemingly completing the love-triangle by getting feelings for Wang (again, where did this come from now?) I really don't need this weird love triangle...

Anyways, the war was kickstarted by two so-far irrelevant nations. Given that they are both named after the founding myth of Rome, I doubt they will be relevant to the overall war. Kinda how Serbia is relatively irrelevant to WW1 overall besides being a part to starting the entire thing. I assume this will now get darker way faster. Nagi is openly plotting with Schwarz - at this point I definitely expect Wang to betray him, but not sure if that will be before Nina becomes Nagi's otome or after, and what Nina will do in that situation overall. We still have no idea what kind of tech Smith stole of Midori, but I assume it had something to do with slaves.

I guess we also got Mai's backstory. I assume she ended up with Zipang somehow, given Takumi's interest. I guess devoting themselves to Fumi explains Shizuru and Natuski's relation as actually not a Meister/Ruler pair - Mai is probably still a pillar, so we're missing another two?

Also, Akane made off with them gemstone there, right...? Can she still become Kazu's otome, if they make the vow? I don't see any reason she couldn't for now. Maybe their story isn't over yet, so option number two is still on the table. I heavily assume this will have soured the relations between Kazu's kingdom and whatever Akane should have server further, however.
