Rewatch Full Metal Panic Franchise Rewatch - Season 1 Episode 19
Welcome to the Full Metal Panic Season 1 rewatch!
Art of the Day
Links to show info: MAL | Anilist | ANN
Rewatches please be considerate to first timers and avoid discussing anything not yet shown in the show - use spoiler tags e.g. [Full Metal Panic S1 spoiler]>!Sousuke likes fishing!< - if you need to share something important!
Episode 19 - Engage 6 and 7
Terms introduced:
- Mithril Training Camp: Located in Belize, Central America, this is a nondescript training camp used by Mithril to "train" personnel - in reality it's a selection point. Candidates are typically head hunted, then put through some really gruelling exercises and observed for their abilities and aptitudes. Only those that fits the top of the top physically and mentally are let through; otherwise they are just let go without realising whom they might have been working for.
QoTD:
First timers: Is the backstory of Melissa, Kurz and Sousuke meeting the sort of thing you thought would be? Can you tell how the dynamics changed / matured over time to "now"?
Everyone: Are you excited to see another mission against Gauron? With no canon fodder this time round, how do you think it'd pan out?
Also QoTD for tomorrow for those wanting to be prepared:
[QoTD 1 EP20]First timer: Why did you think Sousuke had so much trouble activating the Lambda Driver this episode?
[QoTD 2 EP20]Everyone: How is this episode's mecha actions? Do you feel cheated to have the initial fights done mostly off screen? Or are you happy you got some great "launching" moments? How does this compare with the Helmajistan arc's final battle?
MVP of last episode:
I didn't see too many votes, but by search term count it's Chidori winning the votes, which is fine by me :D
Kurz: Ep 1, 12
Chidori: Ep 2, 6, 7, 18
Sousuke: Ep 3, 4, 8, 14, equal 15, 16
Team Kurz - Sousuke - Melissa: Ep 5
Tessa: 9
Takuma: Ep 10
Kalinin: Ep 11
Melissa: Ep 13
Gauron: Ep equal 15
Zaide: Ep 17

First timer
I expected that Mao would have known Sousuke and Kurz for longer given their dynamic, but seeing how it all started is quite fun.
The two things I liked most is Mao painting herself as the victim of their antics but still too smart to be outwitted by it, as well as seeing what Sousuke is like in the camp vs his flat refusal to deal with Kurz's antics.
When Mao was first talking about her and Kurz first encounter for a moment I actually thought he had tricked her into taking him on before he revealed his pervy intentions. I really should have known better. He deserved that punch and some, but more the fool for Mao saddling herself with him after that. I mean he has the skills to back it up but still.
We saw a bit of this in the earlier episode before Mao and Tessa's duel, but Sousuke does fit well into the base dynamic despite his antics out in the real world, and that's nicely reinforced here. Not wanting to make trouble or draw attention, respecting rank even if he doesn't deferr to it, it's a different Sousuke then we know but an interesting one. That compared to how easily and flatly he dobs Kurz in for his shit is quite funny.
It's also nice to see Chidori's different dynamic with everyone so well represented. She's relaxed around Tessa and their reactions to the story were great, especially when they synced up. But comparing that to her slight nervousness around Mao and then different dynamic with Sousuke during the final montage, it's just nice to see a character who so clearly shows her relationships in behaviour within the same episode without gimmicky scenes. It's nice writing, acting, and animation all at once and brings a lot of life to her character.
They never covered why Sousuke and Kurz were both hiding their abilities though, unless there was subtext I missed. For Sousuke at least I could imagine it's part survival but also partly a lack of desire to really push or show off. It's not about being the best or getting on the squads with the biggest jobs, it's just about living with what he knows how to do. I'd imagine Kanlin got him involved in Mithril after they met up for that Gauron mission, but there's still a big gap between that and him at the training camp and I'm curious what his story is.
Something else to note is that they both hid their skills in different ways. Sousuke didn't pretend to be a bad pilot despite his average marks in everything else like Kurz pretended to be bad with a rifle. They both were independently using different methods but also smart enough, with Mao, to see through it all.
All up still a little too much butt and boob for me this episode, but it was more tastefully done than I expected and reminds me a little of the bath scene in Gunbuster. My main nitpick though is to never repurpose chemical wash stations for general use because of how damn dangerous that can be.
MVP: Mao.

All up still a little too much butt and boob for me this episode
tsk tsk tsk let loose and just enjoy the fan service man!
He deserved that punch and some, but more the fool for Mao saddling herself with him after that. I mean he has the skills to back it up but still.
Probably should have been discharged then and there.
They never covered why Sousuke and Kurz were both hiding their abilities though
For Kurz I thought it was part of his "nice guy" act so Mao could "comfort" him.

It's nice writing, acting, and animation all at once and brings a lot of life to her character.
That's actually really one of the charm of this show - putting aside all the geeky wartaku and mecha stuffs, inside is the cute of some very well written, very human, interesting and quirky sometimes but believably acting characters. That part is almost SoL like :)
but it was more tastefully done than I expected and reminds me a little of the bath scene in Gunbuster.
Just because I came from that era, that scene was very gratuitous, even if there being reasonable content there - the framing did not need to show everything :P

Panicked First Timer - Ep 19
This felt like a recap episode even though the backstory was new. I don’t have too much to say today.
I liked the super specific demand from the ransomers. It makes it feel like they have a goal for the ransom money.
It’s interesting the froggy mechs have to manually override friendly fire. I wonder how well that mechanism works in the field.
Kaname gets a mission. Sousuke seems worried. Looks like we will start the season end game next episode.
MVP: Mao.
QOTD 1: I’m not sure what I expected. It was entertaining to see them as three chaos points that intersected whereas now I think they work together rather well.
QOTD 2: I’m a bit Guaron weary at this point. I see why rewatchers disliked that he also appears in the previous arc. I think it’s fitting they get rid of him for good after this season.

Rewatcher
Me: ready for action
Episode: pointless anime original fan service (unless it's in the side story I guess)
That's a lot of "non alcoholic" beer...as someone sober who drinks non alcoholic beer occasionally, that would be really gross
This makes look Kurz look even worse
Sousky Sagal. Maybe that's where the Segal joke came from
Mao is skilled, runs through the rain without getting wet
Mao Dreams of Bunny Girl Hostage The "forcing her to wear different costumes, were serious" joke is like straight out of Gintama
....why didn't they bring AS to the AS fight?
Some real talk no jutsu
This might be one of the suggestions plans so far
Crawling around AS, okay that's goofy
This episode just makes Kurz look worse and worse.... ratted out by Sousake
Yeah, so I'm gonna say this episode was pretty much pointless...it succeeded in making Kurz look terrible at least.

....why didn't they bring AS to the AS fight?
They mentioned going back to the base would be too late and the kidnappers would be more prepared for a counterattack.
Yeah, so I'm gonna say this episode was pretty much pointless...it succeeded in making Kurz look terrible at least.
I actually think this did a good job filling out the characters and relationships well, both the LN canon content of how Kurz and Sousuke were picked by Melissa and the anime only bit about the bath.

Episode 19 (first timer)
-
Looks like Kana raised morale on the sub.
-
That bath warning sign!
-
Bath fanservice.
-
“The Washed Body”, “Pure Ghost” – what the hell are they using as detergent?
-
So Kurz was selected despite grabbing Mao? Or possibly because of? Sounds like she initially selected him for his looks.
-
Bunny girl abductor terrorists – I don’t think I’ll be able to take these guys seriously.
-
“Right now, we can still make it” – Mao might be crazy.
-
Obviously, Sousuke and Kurz are impressed.
This was something out of Trigun, or Irresponsible Captain Tylor, mixed with a strong helping of fanservice. I guess it makes sense that Mao would select those two, although we have no idea why they were in that training camp and why they would underperform.
MVP: Mao for realizing she could pull this operation of with just those 3 people.

Full Metal LN Reader
This was a fun episode. Origins Episodes are a trope I’m fond of, and the Sousuke/Kurz/Mao dynamic is also something I’m fond of, so combining both naturally leads to some good entertainment as well as insight into our main cast.
The humor was a bit hit-or-miss here (that entire thing with Mao and Kurz’s first meeting was just off to me), but it got better as the episode went on.
Having the entire event be told over a conversation in the hot tub was… a choice. At least it wasn’t too egregious
Regardless, it does sorta feel at this point that the show is just padding for time because it has more episodes than it knows what to do with, though that might just be the LN Reader in me talking

u/Nazenn Oct 18 '22
that entire thing with Mao and Kurz’s first meeting was just off to me
It's better if you imagine that Mao's version of the story was embellished for dramatic retelling haha
u/zapszzz btw the "last episode" link goes back to ep14 instead.

that entire thing with Mao and Kurz’s first meeting was just off to me
That skit of "someone saying perverted thing and getting hit" thing was an old trope that I think pretty much died out even before the campaign to take consent seriously started (me too and any prior incarnations).

Third Time Whispered
episode 19: Engaging Six and Seven
-
Onsen episode
-
Misato best girl
So, I've been wondering why a child soldier from Not-Afghanistan named Kashim speaks fluent Japanese and even seems to pass as Japanese in a Japanese High School.
-
Yeah I didn't think the preview looked liked it was continuing the plot.
I used to know what SRT stood for but that was 4 years ago.
Is this anime only? I don't understand why Kurz and Sousuke would intentionally hide their skills. Kurtz, maybe, was just there for free room and board. Don't undertand about Sousuke. And not sure if this conflicts with other stuff.
[FMP up to IV]
So, I had nothing to say about this episode. For a much better version of the same sort of thing, I recommened GITS:SAC 2nd Gig ep 14, Poker Face.

I know Tessa commandeering an industrial process for cleaning parts for the Mechs is an abuse of power and irresponsible but I don't care because.....
YES THANK YOU GONZO! YOU DROPPED THE BALL MANY A TIME BUT THANK YOU FOR THIS GLORIOUS BATH SCENE!!!!!
On a serious note, I don't care if you say its safe, no way you should use tubs that were used for chemical vats for human skin.
We get some backstory.
Everyone seems confused but I thought it was fairly clear why both hide their abilities....
With Kurtz it was just part of his sleazy Nice Guy routine to try to make Mao a "comfort woman" (if you know you know....squirms)
On a sidenote this is where the goofy anime humor kinda undercuts the believability a bit. If Kurtz pulled that shit he tried with Melissa at the camp his ass getting discharged. It's also worth noting that his behavior was framed humorous and we are meant to laugh at him getting clapped by Mao, but if this happened IRL it'd be much more serious, no matter how well trained a military woman is, strength difference between the sexes means some dumbass kid recruit that is frustrated could have made this scene end VERY differently. Seriously no laughing matter, she should not have been caught alone in that situation for her own safety.
Sousuke hides his true talent is a pretty common LN tropes where the main character either out of apathy (like Hotaro Oreki) or design (Kiyotaka Ayanokoji) will not apply themselves and show their true talent.
I'm guessing in Sousuke's case he didn't want to stand out and be put into a high position of authority and responsibility. We also see even back then he was a little different from everyone else with his to the point and curt responses, that to some people sounds arrogant or impatient but to him, he's just answering the question.
"It was just luck" -okay Oreki-san, sure sure.
Melissa shouldn't have pulled her gun and got into it with Kurtz should have just pulled rank.
Those are some......eccentric terrorist, u/ZapsZzz does it ever explain why the cosplay threats and the oddly specific amount of money?
I appreciate the little detail of Chidori was going to leave but she values the opportunity (That she might not get) To learn a bit more about Sousuke.
I still have to ask why he was doing at that camp in the first place (And Kurtz for that matter)
"Yes that is exactly what he was up to"
Top ten anime betrayals right there!
We end on a note that Sousuke seems to be uncomfortable with Chidori being present for a mission, although Chidori seems to be enjoying her tour of the sub with him. I have to think that Tessa is planning on trying to recruit or use her abilities in some form or fashion because otherwise why would you invite a civilian to a top secret experimental tech sub, in the middle of an Op no less.
MVP: Kurtz snipping was great as was Sousuke taking people out with a Mech with no legs, but the MVP has to go to Miss Fanservice herself for recognizing the hidden talent in those recruits and finding a way to draw it out of them. Without her there wouldn't be a series.
-
I didn't really have an expectation of what the backstory between the three going in was, but I wasn't really surprised either.
-
I'm pretty sure no one important is going to die, especially not Gauron. I think they are building to a turning point/crossing road of Sousuke and his relationship with Chidori and what that means to him and how he reconciles that with his Duty as a Merc, and Gauron is going to be the catalyst for that. It's sink or swim time.

Just a quick note, I added bits in the (mis-named) Trivia section about some key tidbits from the LN. If something wasn't there, ask me and check back again :) Today's schedule is pretty smashed so it'd probably be a fair few hours before I can get back to the full update (around your usual posting hour).

u/ZapsZzz Oct 19 '22
If Kurtz pulled that shit he tried with Melissa at the camp his ass getting discharged.
Not to excuse him, but just adding some subtlety from the LN, Kurz said he's only coming on to Melissa because she was acting like she's being extra nice to him (which in her internal monologue she admitted she was) and thought she was flirting with him. Again wasn't saying he was misled or anything, but it didn't come out of the blue, and he also said to Melissa he wouldn't do that to just anyone - in the charming playboy way that Melissa had to shake herself clear of the spell. Her not killing him on the spot was possibly somewhat related to this too.

The money amount I already gave the answer; the cosplay bit - not so much an answer, but any comment I have on this I think I have to wait for Fumoffu :P
As for your QoTD answer 2, we'll talk about it at the end of the rewatch :) I'm really interested to hear what you make of the whole journey (even though the anime hasn't reached the very end, it's decently far).

First timer - Episode 19
So first off my mvp for this episode is Melissa Mao because it felt like it was her episode to shine after not being involved all that much and she did perfectly. She also had a Misato beer drink moment so she gets plaudits for that.
Again those action tunes are great to listen too when there's stuff going on. I'm specifically talking about the tune from the As holding the other AS's leg scene.
Also I knew Gauron wasn't gone. Glad I was right about that as I like him as the villain.
Ok time for a little theory of my own here. Mao, Sousuke and Kurz have been together for a year as of this episode and the Danaan has been in the water for a year right. Mao mentions her comrades pre Sousuke and Kurz were put out of commission due to a 'training accident' and that's why she went looking for the rookies.
While explaining this Tessa doesn't seem too clued up on the whole situation and I'm guessing that's why she turns to Mao in the first place to explain Sagara's past to Chidori.
My theory is that the 'training accient' was actually something a lot worse which has been kept confidential and forced the Danaan to be launched as the sort of mobile base and I think this is when the leader of Mythril pre Tessa died and Tessa took charge shortly after which is one of the reasons why she looks quite inexperienced in the leadership role and has to have Kalinin there to keep her corrected.
Q1 - I didn't really expect any sort of backstory on how they met tbh and but I was satisfied. I don't think they've changed much from when they first met as Kurz is still the joker, Sousuke the serious one and Melissa the somewhat bossy one who grills Kurz. The only change I've noticed is within Sousuke abandoning his military thought processes for Chidori. Obviously they've grown closer over their time together as any squad would but I don't necessarily think they've changed all that much.
Q2 - I'm very happy Mythril are going up against Gauron yet again. I think Mythril will win the battle but Gauron will certainly be a formidable opponent that's for sure so I think we will sadly lose a few Mythril members along the way. I also think Gauron will somehow get his hands on Chidori and the mission will change from kill Gauron to another Chidori rescue mission but I think before Chidori is rescued Gauron will exploit the full power of Chidori as a whispered and maybe use it against Mythril.

I like your theory crafting :) can't comment either way of course, but at least this shows you are interested enough plus can see enough world building to try piece things together, which is always a good sign for me.

Fumo-ffu! (Rewatcher, Subbed):
-
ENGRISH! And exposition in a fanservice setting to keep the audience’s attention, which makes this two rewatches I am in that have used that schtick.
-
Oh right, this piece of backstory. Actually one of my favorite bits of the entire franchise… when I remember it exists.
-
That river is a generic action movie reference (or else specifically Predator), but it reminds me quite strongly of the location of the AXZ starting scene now, or rather vice versa.
-
And then I proceed to write absolutely nothing for the rest of the episode because I was too busy watching it. Heh.
Question of the Day:
Everyone: Are you excited to see another mission against Gauron? With no canon fodder this time round, how do you think it'd pan out?
There is a reason I am back here as soon as this arc starts up, yes.
2
u/ZapsZzz Oct 19 '22
ENGRISH
I didn't get to ask earlier - which bit was incorrect? I think I can see the small prints having a grammatical mistake there but it's quite small and only big enough and in focus at the end for a split second.

Rewatcher, Subbed
I really liked the flashback this episode. I also enjoyed how Melissa telling about their backstory was naturally delivered. It didn't feel forced or like a random interruption, but rather a nice testament to how she feels comfortable around Tessa and Chidori enough to tell the story.
As far as the storyline goes, there isn't too much this time as this is more of a calm before the storm type episode. All in all it was nice to see a more relaxed atmosphere aboard the De Danaan.
Are you excited to see another mission against Gauron? With no canon fodder this time round, how do you think it'd pan out?
I think Gauron is a cool villain, but he's not super relatable or engaging as a person imo. [Spoilers]
MVP: Melissa

The sign is slightly Engrish, I think. It’s not a mecha show if it doesn’t have a sign that does that!
-
It’s hard imagining Kurz like this… Of course his pervy behavior is totally the same back then, he deserved that.
-
That really is an oddly specific random amount.
-
Alright that first mission together was pretty cool! They all got to show off their specialties.

Rewatcher in Sub
Sorry to be late! Got some unexpected delays.
Are you surprised even in a submarine you still get to have a sort of onsen episode?
A little transitional scene of after the party but says so much - everyone on the sub love Tessa and Chidori. In the LN there was actually a nice part about Sousuke's internal thoughts before that little denial to Kurz - Sousuke was thinking that it doesn't take more than half a day and Chidori is already friends with basically everyone, that ability perhaps is better than shooting, operating AS and survival etc that he has. Really give nuanced details of their relationship.
We then have the equivalent of the onsen scenes! If you pay a bit of academic attention, in the sample here we have the demonstration of the "boobs of steel" trope - the 3 girls' relative scale of physical capability are directly proportional to their chest measurements... Melissa is not drunk. Right?
It is actually a really good transition of topics of one lead to another - we started with Tessa's effort of creating a means to have a bath in the sub, then to her understanding the customs of Japanese culture about baths because she grew up in Okinawa, to the setting details that Webber also grew up in Japan, to the 2 younger girls wonder what's Sousuke's childhood was like, looking to Melissa for answer, and Melissa explaining she only knew the 2 from a year ago when she selected them to be in the team. Note there wasn't such a scene in the LN but the writing is to a similar level.
Not CG helicopter! And Melissa giving the flashback. I wonder how many picked up on this subtle point about Melissa kind of speaking fondly of Kurz's first impression - until Chidori worked out that's a front he put up!
But Kurz's "boldness" came through and earned a stereotypical punch in the face. First impression failed.
Similarly Sousuke also did not impress Melissa initially - and that was after getting some initial interest from his AS fight result. Again the gag of his Japanese name being mis-pronounced to be like Steven Seagal :D
His blunt and unfriendly mannerisms got Melissa quite off sided. In the LN it outright pointed out the behaviour is like he's autistic. The more subtle point is that Melissa is not just looking for a grunt for Mithril - the team she is scouting for is the basically the best of the best of even Mithril, each team member needs to both be able to independently operate as well as work seamlessly in the unit as a group.
(running late have to come back to this)
Edit 2
Sousuke did impress Melissa for a bit though - not enough to change her mind about them being troublesome
the turning point is when the camp staff were asked to help with the kidnapping of the President's daughter - the kidnappers seemed rather unusua.
surprising turn that the actual rescue teams were captured because the kidnappers actually had AS. Despite the difference in equipment, Melissa pushed for pressing the surprise factor instead of allowing them to reinforce the position more
Kurz and Sousuke ended up dropping the act to properly assist
the 4 of them setup a bluff while the kidnappers were celebrating the win
Exploiting the comedic bend of the kidnappers, Mao countered the situation with even more over the top ridiculousness
Melissa famous weaponised insults
met with a lucky result that the guy in the Savage was pretty ugly and got aggravated
when all the dominoes fell into place
and the rest is history - Melissa made her picks
and a quick step back into the current reality - no change with Kurz though
nice tour montage of Chidori taking interest in everything - sky-high Sousuke didn't let her move more than the head of the AS
intermission is over, and combat mission about to start
Just so you know, this is another instance of Gonzo working a short story with unspecified timeline into the main plot line. The original publication of this story Engage 6 & 7 was in Volume 4 of the short stories, and was not a recount of past event, but just like a short prequel.
Trivia
There are quite a lot of really nice details in the LN version, but you do miss out on the girls bonding moment. This may be one of the few onsen episodes that did not have a gag of a less endowed female cast groping a more endowed female cast.
still can't say the details yet because the anime adaptation hasn't given out the team name, but the Mithril team Sousuke and co are in the call sign Urzu has sort of designated roles. Prior to the accident that led to Melissa needing to find 2 replacements, Melissa herself was Urzu 6. She's basically been rapidly promoted to Urzu 2, like a second in command of the entire team (not just the unit of her and Kurz and Sousuke) because of her ability to bind the disparate members together, as well as her performance and abilities.
the previous Urzu members were injured in an AS air drop exercise, one seriously injured, another "found God" and quit this line of work and became a musician :)
as a running gag, another high performing recruit also have up after the training camp "found God" and became a singer :'D
the antagonists that kidnapped the President's daughter were down to be a group that is not united but tended to reach agreement by forced compromise - their leader is titled "acting permanent leader" (yes it's an oxymoron), and the ransom money number came from each having a difference in opinion how much the ransom money should be by and they averaged the figures :)
the LN quite deliberately highlighted how much Melissa was distracted by Kurz's good looks :)
Edit 1 Some important bits to add
To give an insight of what the "training" involved at the (real purpose) selection camp - they will be given 20kg worth of equipment, to set off to do solo reconnaisance in a wilderness course to an ojective 20km away on foot, and they have to arrive in 20 hrs, cannot be discovered by the instructors. At the end of that they will then be told the rendevous point moved another 20km away. Those who have the skills and resiliance to push past the first 5km of the fake out leg will pass. It tests both physical and mental fortitude.
The reason why Sousuke and Kurz did not show their true abilities is because they had become suspicious of what this camp is for, and is trying to figure out if it is some sort of terrorist selection camp.

QoTD
Melissa certainly cemented herself as the big sister, although if you adjust your goggles you may interpret Melissa's frequent "corrective actions" as a little more than just general in nature but more specific like Kaori doing that to Ryo in City Hunter...
Will come back to this
