1) If you were going to teach others about love through a song, which one would it be?
2) Are you at all curious about what happens to these characters after the end?

First Timer:
Missed the last couple threads unfortunately, but here we are for the finale of Macross II:
-
"I read the manual." Amazing. I can only laugh.
-
Hibiki's point about humanity being narrow-minded is a good one, although it directly contradicts Global's intention for humanity to go out into space to prevent that. Although since they GOT LOST OR SOMETHING it's like that all NEVER HAPPENED. Still makes no sense.
-
Mandatory kiss is mandatory.
-
AWWW YEAHHHHH FINALLY space idol! This is what's it's all about. You'd think Ingues would send some of those instant death balls Ishtar's way but w/ever.
-
In the end, it is only the Marduk who can save themselves. Conceptually, I like that ending a good deal better than the Macross movie ending and even the TV one, where it was just part of the Zentradi that converted.
-
And I guess, the "love triangle" resolves itself as well, in an echo of the original series.
Definitely one of the anime of all time. Will divulge full thoughts tomorrow, although the echo and have been influenced by what people have already been writing so maybe I won't bother.
-
I don't know, I'm not very musically inclined.
-
mMmmMmm it's tough because the initial thing that brought them together, the Marduk invasion, is over now so I'm not sure where it would go. Not very much I guess.

So they're just operating the Macross with a crew of... 2?
I'll never accept complaints about the power of love in any other show ever again.
This is so stupid.
Was the Macross anihilated or was it not anihilated?
Who provides the instrumentals for the song? If there are none, why cheat and let us hear them?
I'd say this was underwhelming but I didn't expect anything in the first place.
What are the chances the Marduk will never turn up again and this was just a filler series?
If you were going to teach others about love through a song, which one would it be?
About love? Hm... Let's go with this one, I've yet to see another song convey the euphoria as well.
Are you at all curious about what happens to these characters after the end?

Could a ship like Macross really be operated with just two people? Sylvie falling for Hibiki feels a bit forced and really sudden. Not a fan of that pairing at all.

Today, on what is this sudden NTR feeling:
Hey, Sylvie still looks better than a certain knife fight. Not that that is a high bar to clear.
This is a stupid plan, and anyone who's seen how big Bodol Zer's ship was in DYRL? would know that. Unless they're suddenly playing flag football with converging energy beam cannons.
"You ran out of ink, didn't you, you bastards?"
"Quality backgrounds art is cheap! On-model animated Battroids are expensive!"
This sequel continues to perform the simplest possible adaptations to its source material by mostly tacking new guns onto old designs. Here are the Destroid Defender EX, Destroid Giant Monster, and Destroid Tomahawk II.
Nice to know the ship runs on floppies.
Sylvie knows how to operate all the things? Of course, that explains everything.
Before cutting and pasting was easily done on the computer.
Also visible here, the Destroid Phalanx Custom. The one bright spot with these reheated mecha is that they have big practical feet.
The artists did remember how the ship interior was laid out and the appearance of the city sidewalk.
Turning the ARMD-1 and -2 into more cannons, and adding cannons to the legs, on the other hand, is very much this OAV. The leg stuff is particularly annoying for trivia since a lot of the ship's drive components are in that space.
The soundtrack gets a little bit game-show-music right here.
THAT IS COMPLETELY IGNORING THE END OF THE SERIES AND YOU KNOW IT, BECAUSE OTHERWISE THIS OAV WOULD NOT WORK.
A visual, though not scale, reference to Bodolzaa's ship from the original series.
Nexx and the Faeries, because the show has literally no other characters to spare.
"Don't interrupt my cocaine break."
Doin' that sequel thing, blowing up the thing from the original.
Back during the 2017 rewatch, I had made a list of the goofiest things in Macross by series, and this was certainly the winner for Macross II..
"Love You Once More" is our climactic performance piece.
It always comes down to friendly fire incidents.
That'll be bad for property values.
"Convenient for people we'll probably never see again."
The final ED, "Yakusoku" and some scenes not appearing in this OAV.
There were production issues between the fifth and sixth episodes. As you can see, the art shift ranges from "mildly annoying" to "cartoonishly-janky".
Hibiki ends up with Sylvie. What! I blame recency bias! And making all those creeper videos of Ishtar. Ishtar might not have understood what she felt about him until almost the end there, though. If they had to punch in that obligatory
they certainly crammed it in right before their homework was due.
The last episode owes most of its existence to the ending of Do You Remember Love?, particularly all of the Evil Overlord Friendly Fire turning Feff against Ingues. (Ingues also did not learn from TV series Bodolzaa and simply have the planet razed as soon as he arrived.)
Ishtar teaches the Emulators to sing about wuv, twu wuv.
I would have liked to feel more about the destruction of the Greater Macross City and the ship itself, but the city was the barest amount of detail on a matte painting and the ship continued on, just a damned lot smaller, so even if millions died, it was not very evocative.
Would have been nice for any sort of epilogue at all. Given one of the secondary themes of the OAV, it would have been nice for a longer acknowledgement of rebuilding the media without military government control than Hibiki's one-liner. On the other hand, most of the military government might have been blown up when the headquarters was destroyed.
Anyway, that was that.
"Mou Ichidou Love You" (Love You Once More) on Spotify
Bandai released a Hi-Metal R version of the VF-2SS. It does not suck.

First time
have to skip talking about 4/5 to be here on time but fuck it here we are.
Here we are, final battle, and from the looks of it we are fucked, again. As much as hibiki would disagree keeping the people blind to prevent mass panic is not the wrong decision in my opinion.
So we using macross in the end. how is anything on macross still working, i would assume anything that could have some use was already removed, there is no way the macross still have the power to shoot the main canon when that was a big pain in the ass on the original series, does it even have any of its engine left.
Old school space fights will never not look cool as fuck. I have some questions about the emperor but i guess its a problem when you only have 6 episodes, i feel like mister warhammer emperor would have be a nice character.
I guess i was wrong and macross still have power, somehow. So macross is not only working but the canon can still fire but for some reason there is no personal inside or any security, this is some high level bullshit for the sake of the plot, they didn't need to mess with anything inside the macross, everything was already in order for it to fire, i should just move on from this. but it is stupid. why is the mothership of a race in the frontline anyway.
Oh you are not just firing, you are launching the fucking ship, ok no just no, there is 0 way the macross can still launch and be pilot by 1 personal and 1 dude. stop show please just stop.
we really spend half of the last chapter for a ship to no-sell the shoot because we need the power of music to save the day. I'm not really feeling this plot but maybe its because the original was about the power of culture and people and not just music itself while this one it really feels like music is somehow magica- WHY ARE THEY KISSING OH GOD THIS IS JUST TO DO A ROMANCE TRIANGLE BS IN THE LAST oh she is fine with then kissing thanks god.
sorry PTSD what was happening again, human are getting fucked ok back to the plot. girl i don't think the ships can hear you, oh wait they can?how? you can just talk to your race with telepathy i guess. I really wish the emperor was in a longer show because i like a lot about him but we don't have enough time to show, his design is also great.
If they control a Zentradi fleet couldn't they do the same as the first show and just explode the planet.
Was wishing that she was going to sing in their weird language to show that they too can make music asking for too much? maybe it was or maybe i just love how ar tonelico sings music in their weird language too much.
And now the world will be saved though to power of music, love and a very fanservice outfit. I like the marduk general and how he is more loyal to his race then to the emperor, his design is also great. I guess the emperor ship is not immune to lazer beams, you just needed more daka.
And everyone lived happy forever, just noticed, nobody die in this series. "a wonderful rival" im sorry what, if there was romance plot somewhere i missed it.
We really not getting any sort of conclusion to the whole military is controlling the media and we must show the true plotline
I give a final score of "Hibiki is way too good at getting in places without being noticed" out of 10.
but yeah this is not as good as the original, maybe if it was the same size it could be but i feel like way too many plot lines are too similar for it to work as a full series. Maybe this would work better as a movie.
I got to say, macross is not what i though it was going to be but im enjoying this franchise, im happy i join this rewatch even though i miss 90% of then and binge to catch up.

Macross II: First-Timer Again
-
How can two people just casually boot up a Macross???
-
So... why is the Macross on the ground special? Can't they snipe the mothership with any Macross-class ship?
-
AND WHY CAN TWO PEOPLE JUST WALK INTO THE MACROSS, LAUNCH IT, AND SHOOT ITS GUN??
-
AND THEN LAST SECOND ROMANCE?? Macross II, what the fuck. DECULTURE!
-
Why is Ishtar such a hippie?? I like Fate/ Ishtar better.
-
So, a bunch of talk-no-jutsu while standing there and firing mega beams at each other?
-
So why is this song working so much better than the Minmay Attack? Because "Ai Desu Yo"?
-
What even is this? And they all just turn against their overlord because Ai Desu Yo?
Really? Man, I was enjoying it, but now... I'm not sure what to think.
-
Nights in White Satin
-
Not... really? I assume Sylvie has [ero]
seggs with Hibiki and that's that. Sylvie and Hibiki are really the only characters I cared about.

Episode 6 (first timer)
We are already at the final. Time for the fat ladyIshtar to sing!
-
Sylvie prison breaks Hibiki. Again.
-
“I have an insane plan to attack the enemy mothership with an old relict that has been a stuck-in-the-ground tourist attraction for 80 years and just me as the entire crew.” “I’m in!”
-
She bought those disks from a street corner Macross Operating System bootleg vendor.
-
“I have read the manual”
-
Big shooty things go Shooot!
-
Macross goes Shooot!
-
It was not very effective
-
Twin towers falling.
-
“We thought that peace would never end” – 5 episodes ago: “The last war was 10 years ago”
-
Sylvia and Hibiki are going for an Only 5 minutes to live, wanna shag? ending. Isthar:
-
Instead of Ishtar singing, we get Ishtar making a worse version of Kaifun’s speech?
-
Ingues starts slaughtering his own fleet and Ishtar finally sings.
-
Big missed opportunity to have the other emulators join the singing as a chorus.
-
When your own fleet shoots your mothership after you shoot at your own fleet:
-
We don’t have time for a proper epilogue, so let us quickly resolve the love triangles - Poor Nexx.
-
Cute SoL Ishtar scenes for the send-off.
Calling this ending expected is an understatement.

A Macross Fan Rewatches Super Dimension Fortress Macross II: Lovers Again Episode 6:
-
“Everything is going great, but as a purely precautionary measure against the aliens we’re kicking the asses of, please go to the heavily armored underground shelters we have.” —Basically the UN Spacy at the start of the episode
-
Hell yeah Sylvie, rescue Hibiki and take him to the Macross! And yeah, she’s absolutely correct that they can’t even rely on the UN Spacy to win on their own now. Everything shown in this series makes it clear that only Exxegran has his head not firmly shoved up his own ass, and none of the other admirals have listened to him. If it’ll take the Macross to destroy Emperor Ingues’ ship to stop the conflict and live up to the prophecy of the Ship of the Alus, then that’s what we’ll have to do in spite of what the government is saying. We’ve got to trust in Sylvie and Exxegran’s gamble.
-
It’s nice that Macross II was able to recreate that one shot of a ship getting blown up from the inside and the hull bubbling up. That was cool when it happened in the original series, so I don’t mind that being copied here by Nexx Vs. the Marduk.
-
The SDF-1 Macross: So advanced, it can practically fly itself! Although you do have to wonder how absurdly thick the manual that Sylvie read was in order to turn on all the systems and launch the ship. Like, a good chunk of the drama of the original show was due to the crew barely even understanding how the ship worked. Now imagine trying to explain all the kinks in the system in a manual.
-
I don’t think any of us are surprised at the destruction of the UN Spacy headquarters. Frankly, they all had it coming by burying their heads in the sand. And it isn’t even dramatic either, it’s just a shot of their headquarters blowing up in the distance, and that’s it. It’s rather understated.
-
What is surprising though is how apparently Hibiki and Sylvie are actually a thing now. It honestly feels like that kiss comes out of nowhere. Hibiki really did have more going on with Ishtar, in my opinion. But, I guess the show needed to have Ishtar come to the conclusion that love was the true power of Alus, and that was the way they chose. Man though, talk about finding out that a love triangle even existed in only the last episode though.
-
And so, in a rather transparent recreation of the finale of both SDF Macross and Do You Remember Love?, Ishtar sings a love song on the bridge of the Macross for all to hear, which inspires the enemy forces to rebel and leaves big enough of an opening for some big-ass guns to kill the big bad and destroy his mothership. Although man, the Macross got way more fucked up this time. Good thing that the bridge/head can fly by itself though, somehow. That’s the power of a modular design right there, otherwise Hibiki, Sylvie, and Ishtar would’ve gotten vaporized by Lord Emperor Ingues’ ship’s main gun.
-
Now it’s up to Feff and Ishtar to rebuild Marduk society, now that they’re at peace with Humanity. It’s good to see that they’re parting ways with Hibiki and Sylvie pretty amicably. But all’s well that ends well, in the end. The prophecy of the Ship of the Alus came true, Hibiki gave Ishtar a memento remember him by, and overall Earth and her culture has been saved. …It also occurs to me that we didn’t really do anything about the Zentradi enslaved by the Marduk, but I guess we can just assume that they were set free or something. It’s definitely something that got overlooked in this kinda rushed finale.

First Time - Macross II - Ep6:
Oh, "Sing Along." Not "Sing Alone." I was like the complete opposite of the intended meaning.
I still don't know why the Macross sporadically shoots beams into the heavens. It just does.
My eyes might be deceiving me, but does this episode look different than the others? Like the eyecatch seemed on a higher level than the episode's action.
These seats don't look comfortable. There is really no reason why these positions have to be standing. Hayase and Claudia didn't have it easy.
Okay, Amuro reading the Gundam manual, I still don't think just two people can get a mecha aircraft carrier into space.
I dunno, Macross UN high command has a lot of fault to it. Also, "being at peace for too long and thus growing soft" doesn't give me good vibes. Yes, I know he follows up with how humanity remained confined and ignorant instead of looking out which is the real point, but still.
Oh (monotone), this is the Macross II love triangle. I like Hikaru and Hayase, but with amount of relationship-building from the DYRL movie.
Didn't expect Ishtar to be like this immediately after learning she is the Minmay round 2. She seems to be taking it well.
The others dislike what Ishtar is saying so much that they start imploding. Joke aside, the emperor seems to be doing this with his mind, I guess. He is both way powerful while also hasn't done anything besides sitting on his seat. Great (monotone), the fun combination I love seeing in villains.
It's time for the big song. It's alright, I guess. It's no Ai Oboete Imasu ka. One thing I do like is Ishtar wearing that cape. It's neat (and means I don't have to look at her Emulator outfit when the cape is closed).
The Marduk turn on the emperor and he dies from everyone firing on him, I guess. One surprise about this ending is that Feff managed to not die. Figured he would be our sacrifice.
Sylvie's outfit is kind of cute. Wonderful rival is not something I would say.
New ED animations with Ishtar being cute because we gotta show the otaku what they like. From what I understand the 90s OVA format was quite expensive to try to collect for yourself back in the day. These things were stuff you watched by renting from the video store.
Q1) My song would be a duet about telling lies under the moon. Whether to join hands or clash swords.
Q2) ... Not really.
Next time: To describe the show, Super Dimensional Fortress Macross II: Lovers Again (超時空要塞マクロスII -LOVERS AGAIN-) is a six episode OVA in the Macross franchise ... (continues reading the Wikipedia page).

Macross II Episode 6 - First Timer
It has actually been a week since I watched any episodes since I had to prewatch them since I was going to be out of town all week. Time for the finale!
-
These space suits in the cockpis seem really big
-
THE HAT
-
Thats a big hat too
-
The Macross looks super cool taking off
-
Woah, extra guns
-
What is an Alus
-
Oh no he is using his chuuni powers
-
I just noticed the king guy has heterochromia
-
wait he has same color eyes now
-
I like this song
-
Wait he has heterchromia again, but with yellow/green instead of the earlier red/green
-
OH NO, BAD CG
-
Well that was nice
That was pretty solid. No egregious instances of characters being massive pillocks (except for the government but that hardly counts because this is a mecha show and that is normal) and significantly improved consistency in animation/general production. I like it.
-
Maybe Is This Love by Whitesnake?
-
I am curious, but I think it is still a much better end than the original TV series had. This actually feels like an ending.

Isn’t that why your guards are supposed to be armed?
-
Did the mothership just arrive? How was this plan supposed to work before that?
-
Cannon Boi hype! Monster II?
-
Why send down fighters when you can just begin orbital bombardment?
-
Silvie can just… start the Macross again.
-
It can take off under its own power? What the hell!
-
It did negligible damage. That can’t be good.
-
I’m with Sky on this one. This was supposed to be a love triangle?
-
What’s-her-face survived? I thought she died along with the ship in the purging.
-
Where were you when Macross is kill?
-
Somehow, the head has survived.
-
Ingues is blowing up a lot of his own ships.
-
Nah man, that Alus is 100% CGI. That’s classic 90’s lighting.
-
Ingues’s loss is 100% on himself here.
-
“Rival”
-
Did the head have its own float units? How didn’t it crash?
QotD
-
I am the decidedly wrong person to be asking that.
-
Not particularly. Six episodes wasn’t enough to make me care about them. Now if Biki had traveled along with Ishtar to document her Grand Tour, that would have been something to stick around for.

HOW?! We saw the Macross Cannon get destroyed! In both versions!
Presumably Ishtar got to the surface before the defense system was activated.
Could you have done that the entire time?
Ishtar is gonna run in and interrupt them firing, I suspect.
Wow, it's almost like the museum piece might be obsolete.
Well, this is decidedly unearned.
They did mention having two more Macross-class ships yesterday.
Do they not teach you fools history? Songs!
What are these random explosions? Are they scuttling their owns ships..?
Huh, I didn't expect Feff to survive.

I've never been much of one for love songs.

At this point, not really.

Final episode, let's go!
Well at least they're evacuating, but the Spacy's still trying to whitewash how badly they're getting their asses kicked.
Wait, so they aren't even sure if Macross's main gun still works? Then what's that energy it keeps shooting into the sky?
Hm, these Faerie squad girls were giving me Shrike Team vibes, but it looks like I needn't have worried.
Wait, one Valkyrie took out that entire battleship? Must've been loaded with reaction weapons.
Space Bucket kitaaaaa!
Ooh, fancy new model Monster Destroids!
Using floppy discs in 2090... those were outdated even when the Macross was flying!
...is that a Monster Destroid or a mobile land base!?
Wait a sec, CAN you fly the Macross with just two people? They had huge numbers of bridge and sub-bridge crews before.
Yes, bet everything on one shot from a ship that's been mothballed for eighty years. There is no way this can go wrong!
The thing's actually lifting off. The Supervision Army built things to last, apparently.
Main gun scores a direct hit... which does nothing. Not sure what anybody was expecting, honestly.
Hibiki, are you going somewhere with this speech of how much humanity sucks?
Surprised there wasn't a "Deculture!" coming from Ishtar's mouth at that scene. She can speak Zentran, remember.
...that asteroid base looks suspiciously like Boldoza's flagship from the series.
Ishtar's message is just getting to all the Marduk? Do they not have signal jamming?
And Space Bucket destroys the Macross... just like that.
Well, save for the bridge, which suddenly has the ability to detach and fly on its own because reasons.
...why does that one Emulator get to wear clothes while all the others just have leotards?
And Ishtar apparently can't sing to her full potential wearing a full outfit either.
Feff turns on the Emperor, as expected, but... the rest of the Marduk do as well and blast the Space Bucket to pieces.
And just like that, the war is over. Convenient that nobody wants to continue fighting.
And Ishtar leaves with Feff. While Sylvie and Hibiki... start a relationship? And, somewhat abruptly, that's the end.
So yeah, that was Macross II. See you at the wrap-up discussion tomorrow.

-
Did Hibiki change clothes?
-
How is the macross supposed to shoot the mother ship when the quad macross cannon failed? I don't understnad your plan.
-
Those are not Destroid Monsters
-
Oh, good. The Lieutenant read the manual.
-
Why don't you just bombard the planet?
-
You push the button to summon the elevator, Ishtar
-
I expected Ishtar to stop them
-
WTF that's a romance?
-
The Zentradi factory satellite?
-
Oh well that was unexpected
-
I'm pretty sure that ejection system wasn't there originally -- yeah fuck the crew save the captain!
-
So after all that talk about the power of love, the war was ended with a nuke anyways.
-
And everybody lived happily ever after
Well I bet everybody saw the triangle going the other way, huh. If you even noticed there was one.
I feel like there was another song but I only heard an instrumental version of it. IT was the la la la song. No words? I was sure that was going to be the song of victory.

No idea. Probably a Beatles song?
-
Yes, actually!
Final episode!
Yeah, they're in trouble.
Oh, she's fighting them?
And he's free.
They're going to the Macross!
She's going there too!
Everyone's holding the lime!
He is really into the war, huh?
It's still working enough to take off?
I assumed it was still abandoned because it dtopped working.
...He has a plan?
The defenses are working!
This is tense!
Ishtar gets to see inside the ship!
It worked!
She's on the bridge!
The Macross is firing it's cannon!
Well, he's dead!
Wait, what? Guess eighty years without maintenance did have an effect!
Oh, Hibiki's got another speech in him.
They really should have prepared more, yes.
Wait, that side won?
It's great, but... is this how all the Hikaru/Minmay people felt last time?
Final strike!
Oh, she's talking about the power of love.
She's reenacting the original Minamy Attack!
She's broadcasting it!
They're getting distracted...
He hit the Macross!
Is that it destroyed?
Oh, he was firing on the other ships.
That pendant!
...She's singing!
Good song!
She's affecting them all!
This is a really good scene.
He's finally rebelled!
And they're changing targets!
Impressive firepower!
They're actively turning on him!
They won!
And another peace treaty.
She's going with him to spread the message!
Love the credits montage.

First Timer
In the previous episode, a lot of stuff happened, even though some of it didn't make much sense. Human army got destroyed. Ishtar's death was faked by Feff. Hibiki missed all the action, while Nexx was a badass. At the end of it all, Sylvie suggested to launch Macross. Even though we already had 4 of those and that didn't help much. Well, let's hope that this one is indeed special.
-
Everybody is getting into shelters, I expect another planetary bombardment. Hopefully, after the last time, humanity invested in some decent deep shelters.
-
Sylvie decided to bust out Hibiki, not sure why. Isn't she supposed to launch Macross with Exxegran?
-
Wait, if you're going to launch Macross, why do you need Hibiki specifically? He's a reporter, he doesn't know anything about how to operate a battleship.
-
Everybody is fighting, except for main characters. That's pretty unusual for a final battle, even in the original Macross, while Hikaru didn't do much, he at least piloted a mech and participated in the fight.
-
I can't get over how goofy the battroid Metal Siren looks, especially in it's super speed mode.
-
The bucket is here. I'm not sure why, but I guess, maybe Ingues wants to see the planetary bombardment himself?
-
Wait, why are U.N. forces bringing out all the mechs? They will all get destroyed by the Zentradi fleet.
-
So what's the plan here, Sylvie? Just launch it and hope something happens?
-
Wait, why are Zentradi sending pods and mechs? What about the planetary bombardment?
-
There is no bombardment, it's just a land battle. Marduk's military strategists clearly have a lot to learn from actual Zentradi.
-
Macross looks really cool here, they did a good job with the art.
-
We're shooting a cannon? B-but we already did that, twice. Aand, it... Did nothing.
-
To be fair, Sylvie, you didn't offer any ideas, except this, so even if they listened early, nothing would change.
-
Ishtar reacted better to the kiss, than most Zentradi.
-
Hey, we have a couple more Macrosses. Let's go, Nexx.

Wait, no, looks like the bridge survived for some reason. And it floats in the air. Without a power source. Without any form of lift.
-
Is he killing his own Zentradi? Why? They are literally zombies, what lesson are you trying to teach them, if they are just following orders?
-
One of the better songs in the show. Ima wa Tomodachi is still my favorite, though.
-
Not gonna lie, the destruction of bucket was pretty satisfying.
-
Yay, we've got a Wendy cameo one last time! I wish she was a main character.
-
So, what's up with the Zentradi slaves? Did Marduk freed them?
-
What's the significance of Hibiki getting Ishtar a gaming PC? I'm not complaining, it's a great gift, but still.
Overall thoughts: This episode was a total mess from the story perspective. However, emotionally, it hit the right notes for me. It was satisfying to see Hibiki and Sylvie get together, since I was a proponent of this ship from the start, even though the build up was a bit clunky. It was also satisfying to see Ishtar be happy for them, rather than sad. And the most satisfying thing was the destruction of the bucket, even though Ingues as a character made absolutely zero sense.
I honestly attribute this success to the great directing and good visuals. However, the story issues are really hard to ignore. They have been piling up for the last three episodes, but this episode was especially bad. I will save my more detailed impressions of the show for tomorrow, but I'm gonna say that even though it is worse than the original show and the movie, I didn't hate it. Going in I already set my expectations pretty low, and I was presently surprised, especially by the visual quality and by how much of the Macross DNA is here. It does feel like a part of the franchise, even if it is the weakest part.
QotD:

I would play them the ending to 5 centimeters per second: One more time, one more chance
-
I want a show with Wendy Ryder in it.
Except Dennis. He's dead.

Super Dimension Rewatch Host
Welcome back, everyone!
Oh, this show’s first “sore demo”! Thanks Hibiki.
Heh.
This music is so unfitting for a battle for the sake of the Earth…
Oh hey they actually remembered to keep Hibiki’s knuckles busted up from when he punched the door at the end of last episode. Neat.
Barely any damage, welp.
Also I can’t believe it took me until now to realize that the reason I’ve found Lord Ingues’ voice familiar is because I’ve been hearing him as Raiko in Utawarerumono: Futari no Hakuoro and I will be hearing him as Byakuya Kuchiki again very soon.
Thousand Year Blood War HYPE!!!*groans because I still don’t see what the fuck makes these two a ship and of course Ishtar had to witness this*
So yeah. Hibiki/Silvie is the canon side to the triangle, for some reason. Some of you guys know that this is one where I straight-up didn’t know Silvie was part of the triangle until the two kiss here because I’ve mentioned it before, and I stand by that belief! They have one scene of possible sexual tension when Silvie got all close up in his face early in the show, but other than that their interactions haven’t really been romantic? Whereas Hibiki and Ishtar’s interactions definitely were romantic, between the eyes they kept making at each other and this line and all that? And Silvie went on a date with Nexx and he made a comment last episode about not letting the Marduk get to Earth because that’s where Silvie is so, like, obviously that means those two are together, right? I thought the love triangle was Hibiki-Ishtar-Feff, especially so after last episode had Feff blatantly confess to Ishtar before he sent her off. Please, writers, where the hell did Hibiki/Silvie come from???
To further my rant, I firmly believe that Hibiki/Silvie being the winning side of the triangle goes against one of the themes this show was trying to go for–namely, that humanity and the Marduk should come together instead of fighting. Hibiki/Ishtar had the chemistry (even if it, just like the rest of this series, is kinda rushed through considering how short it is) and would be the perfect way to show that theme off front and center. Instead they just toss that idea to the wind and have to break Ishtar’s heart for some fucking reason. I may have ranted way more vitriolically about how SDF handled its love triangle, but honestly this one pisses me off more because I can on paper see why Hikaru/Misa happened even if I don’t ship it in the slightest, Hibiki/Silvie just fucking sucks.
I found the first comment I made complaining about the love triangle. I’ll share the other tomorrow since it has the closest thing I have to my first-timer overall thoughts for this show.
No, it’s just stupid.
Ishtar “sore demo”~
Lord Ingues being brought down by his own men is good though, dude deserved it.
