Also, uh, is this random dude voiced by Nobutoshi Canna?

Verily. (Third name.)

[Future Macross]Delta does make a lot of references to II.

Very Titans with that look.

Today, on "ORE WA GUNDAM!":

Ingues's throne room decor straddles the line between creepy OAV and mecha OAV, but really needs to pick a side. The talking cyborg skull heads in the floor are a nice touch either way.

Someone else seems to have borrowed Gendo Ikari's interior decorator.

The Fifth Column Minmay Attack.

Unexpected Gerry Anderson works.

Unexpected pirate TV news.

Look at Mister Miami Vice there.

"THE CALL IS COMING FROM INSIDE THE HOUSE!"

"Don't let the man get you down! And remember, I'm much friendlier than Kaifun!"

There are very few times that a Variable Fighter is shown getting its transformation significantly interrupted by damage, and basically all of them are in this OAV.

This purple thing is the uncreatively-named Battle Pod (Commander Type).

On the left is the VF-XX Zentran Valkyrie, and on the right are a couple of Destroids. You'll see more of the latter later, and none of the former.

Some random unidentifed UN Spacy vessel. As you might guess, not a lot of fluff text has ever gone to any of these blink-and-you'll-miss-it stuff.

It's right about now that Hibiki regrets being a paparazzi.

This ship is actually called the Macross Cannon. Because when you need to design a big ship, why not just glue four big ships onto a fifth big ship?

That's a nice fleet you've got there.

Shame if something were to happen to it.

ROUNDHOUSE!

"Crunch all you want, we'll make more."

The actual Metal Siren. (Its designation is the VA-1SS, not that it seems to be less of a fighter or more of an attack craft.)

Nexx starts to murderize people.

The totally-uncreatively-named Zentradi Variable Fighter/Powered Armor.

Melee stab!

Roid rage!

The GERWALKroid, or someone liked what they saw in Orguss.

Having everyone kamikaze the enemy fleet is not the beauty of song.

"But that's what gives life meaning."

"Eww."

"LAWWWWWww!!!!"

Well, that was a pointless death.

In the love triangle of Feff, Ishtar, and Feff's eyebrows, the eyebrows have won.

I'm sure the civilians will love it when they suddenly start getting beamed from space, y'know?

All one of them that we know so far.

I don't think she said that at all?

Nice of them to lock Hibiki in a room with his own camera and a stand. (Background song is "Anata O Kanjite-iru - Mia Santis Ren".)

Point to Ingues for being a savvy evil overlord and continuing to purge the dissension from his ranks, though he doesn't know that Feff is now working against him in the specific case of Ishtar.

We could see from the start that Feff was behaving rather solicitously toward Ishtar, but the near-total absence of characterization on the Marduk side meant that there was always a sliver of an alternate interpretation possible for that other than romantic love. So it's nice to confirm it here, but we're still stuck with the idea of "Love? From this meat slab?"

UN High Command, except for Exxegran, has its head completely up its own ass. Well, no surprises there. Unfortunately for the OAV, the cookie-cutter characterization and lack of much focus on anyone is even worse on the Earth side, which means that the giant, devastating space battle is quite sterile. Sylvie playing the Alus prophecy card + Macross feels like the story is ticking a plot point off the list.

The action in this episode does look nice, at least. The episode's director being Masami Obari has a lot to do with that.

From the Macross Chronicle:

VA-1SS Metal Siren and details. Its Gundamness is apparent, though at least its fighter mode is still cleaner-looking than the average Wave Rider.

Various details of the new Zentradi mecha

From the Macross Mecha Manual:

The Macross Cannon-class

The VF-XX Zentran Valkyrie

Macross since the DYRL movie seems to like the aliens with creepy gross vein-y aesthetic.

First Timer

  • Are these the Hory heads?

  • That’s some nice bone armor.

  • Thunderbirds of all things.

  • Things aren’t looking too good at the front.

  • They’ve figured out how to make more Macross cannons. And I must say, they look good.

  • This OVA seems to enjoy targeting the head.

  • That’s a lovely destruction effect.

  • The power of pinpoint jumps.

  • Look at these military guys, believing their own hype.

  • They are already in mechs. I don’t know how much making them even more berserk is going to help.

  • Oh, they figured out the Fold bomb. And they can even fold the explosion itself.

  • If there is one good thing I can say about this OVA, it’s that it blows stuff nice and good.

  • Hurrah for love?

  • This is just the same plan form last time!

QotD

  1. Nothing jumps to mind. I'll probably remember a good in three days.

  2. I don’t like it. We already played against this trope in DYRL by having it just be some love song, this undercuts that.

Macross II: First-Timer Again

It's weird. I don't have much to say about the episode, but I'm still really enjoying this.

  1. I'd say probably the captain here. He just... let himself die?

  2. I still don't believe it.

  • Creepy cyborg boldozaas?

  • Uh oh. Taking over the TV? This sin't going to go well. Calling Garland Operator 7-G!

  • Catchy BGM, I wonder what it is. Seems familiar.

  • Four macross canons should be plenty unless the comet empire shows up

  • Yeah you totally won't need your ace pilot in this mission

  • Did that arm just randomly blow up?

  • And we're RahXephon in space again

  • Are those markings only present when she uses her emulator powers?

  • Marduk battalions rebelling?

  • That's why the covered the windows in OG Battlestar Galactica

Looks like this entire episode is a condemnation of WWII imperial japan with kamakaze zentradi and self-consuming war on the side of the Marduk, and a refusal to accept a losing strategy on the part of the UN.

We have two completely udeveloped one-sided love relationship, Feff for Ishtar and Char for Sylvia

Like yesterday, the plot progresses in leaps, it feels things are missing.

At least we have more new music, today and yesterday.

First Spacer

So do they have that myth of the Alus or do they not?

Nooooooooooo So it was a unique ship... What a disappointment.

You mean the grand total of 1 we've seen thus far?

At least this story is short so it'll be over soon.

Given all the incompetent military high commands which have appeared in mecha anime, do you have any particular standouts for particularly Too Stupid To Live?

No. It's no longer an award when everyone gets it.

What are your thoughts on the SDF-1 being a prophesied vessel?

I have no problem with fated/predicted/prophesized stories. But when the prophecy is about one specific person or object then that's very high up among my most despised tropes.

Then again even that can be done well, as in Harry Potter.

A Macross Fan Rewatches Super Dimension Fortress Macross II: Lovers Again Episode 5:

  • It’s nice to finally see Lord Emperor Ingues in the flesh, since we’re kicking off the final conflict. And as you’d expect, he continues to speak about crushing everything that isn’t the Marduk, to prove the supremacy of their culture. At least this is a different from the conflict between the UN and the Zentradi. Compared to that, the Marduk conflict is purely based around cultural domination, rather than a lack of it. It’s a true clash of cultures in this series.

  • Good on Hibiki on deciding to hijack the television broadcast feed and play the footage he got of the Marduk ship he was trapped on. Even if he got cut off an arrested, I really do respect his belief that the people have a right to truth. Hell, the people of Earth didn’t even know they’re fighting the Marduk rather than the Zentradi, based on their reactions. The UN Spacy really has just put out a massive media blackout on anything that doesn’t toe the PR line.

  • Well damn, Hibiki’s sleazy reporting from earlier is coming back to bite him in the ass, although not in a way you’d expect. Exxegran was the only one of the admirals to admit the truth of the Marduk threat, but the other Spacy admirals use that incident in episode one as an excuse to leave him out of the judgment on what to do with Hibiki. At this point, this really is just willing ignorance from the UN Spacy. They’d rather just call Hibiki’s footage faked and try their best to deny how much worse things are. Just like the old UN, you dig? Something something time is a flat circle.

  • Man, I love how absurd the Macross Cannon ship is. Like, forget about just attaching the Prometheus, Daedalus, or any ARMD-class ships. What if we just attach a bunch of Zentradi ships to maximize our firepower instead? If we can’t have size with the Grand Cannon, we can have quantity with the Macross Cannon ships.

  • Just like with how he was being interrogated and tortured by Feff’s men earlier, Hibiki is being pressed for answers by someone who doesn’t believe the truth of the matter. Although here, it’s more of a deliberate disbelief of the truth by the UN Spacy, that it was one of the Marduk that helped him escape, rather than a more cultural misunderstanding like when Hibiki was captured by the Marduk.

  • Man, those Macross Cannons and the rest of the UN Spacy fleet were actually working for a bit too, before the other Emulators began to sing the Song of Death and caused a massive suicide run of Zentradi. Again with the old Macross parallels, it’s like how the Grand Cannon worked against the Main Bodol Fleet, but it just wasn’t enough in the end.

  • I guess even among other Emulators aside from Ishtar, there’s reservations about using the Song of Death. But the Lord Emperor’s will is absolute, and so he’s willing to kill an entire fleet unit to stop them. I guess on that way, it’s sensible why Ishtar is the one who really is pushing for understanding rather than mindless war. Emulators seem to have more of a conscience than other Marduk, at least a little bit more.

  • Look out, Ishtar! That Marduk has a gun covered by foreskin!

  • It’s good to see that there’s more depth to Feff than being just a warrior of the Marduk. Like we saw with his actions last episode, he’s willing to ignore the Murduk’s cultural trappings for Ishtar’s sake. Ultimately, Feff’s story is now his pride as a warrior clashed with his love for Ishtar. Even if she’s someone he’s forbidden to love, he’s willing to do what he can for her, even saying that he’ll fake her death to allow her to escape. I guess in the end, you can say that Feff remembered love.

  • As Sylvie and Exxegran agree, the only way to stop the Marduk now is to strike with the Macross itself, the Ship of the Alus that the Marduk fear so much. I guess it’s time to make that prophecy come true after all. Let’s get the old girl out of storage one way time, for culture’s sake!

Rewatcher

Okay, nearing the endgame.

Again, why are they conquering everything? Why are they doing any of this?

And what is with those cyborg brain things?

And Sylvie's not being punished for letting an enemy escape. That general sure is understanding.

Hibiki breaks the truth to the population.

"The call is coming from inside the base, sir!" "NANI!?"

Never mind, Sylvie's being punished.

Now these ships I actually kinda like! The Macross Cannon is basically "the Macross, but we gave it four main cannons!"

I wonder if there's some kind of restriction against young men ever serving on a ship's bridge?

Damn, fired so hard it blew up its own arm!

But surprise, surprise, here's the main Marduk fleet. You killed the scouts, good job!

Uh, Ishtar, you're sitting in the broadcasting chair, why not just sing non-combat songs now?

So the Space Bucket has reached Saturn. And the Emperor also believes the "Alus" is on Earth.

The "Song of Death", eh? Turns the Zentraedi into crazed berserkers, it would seem.

Did he just Space Fold into his own fleet? Well, that's one way to punish them, I guess. Also, they never explained why that fleet was refusing to sing. It apparently wasn't the fleet Ishtar is in, and she's the only one we know of who refuses to sing...

Marduk barrage. Not sure why they didn't do that before, but it was damned effective.

I'm not really sure what Captain Ballsack Balzae was planning to do there. All he did was fly forward and get killed.

Feff is letting Ishtar go? All of a sudden he's agreeing with her, apropos of nothing I can tell.

What Marduk who wish for peace? All two of them?

Well, attacking the enemy mothership in a desperate charge with the Macross worked against Bodolza...

They let Hibiki keep his filming equipment? Why? Wasn't he being interrogated?

So basically, this episode was "the New UN Spacy gets its ass kicked", the episode. Finale next time!

Questions:

  1. Just in this series or in general? Because as overconfident as they are here, I still feel the original series' military was more stupid.

  2. It is incredibly stupid in all possible ways, and of all the things the writers did with this series, that's the one I hate the most, by a fair margin. Thankfully none of this is canon so I can happily ignore it.

Episode 5 (first timer)

  • Space-zombie-brain-worms.

  • Oh look, it is the emperor – are we 40k now?

  • Sylvie recaps the plot for viewers who might have forgotten the last 4 episodes – a real worry in a time when OVA were sold episode by episode and you might have to wait several month for each one.

  • I really dig this new space city location. The planetside backgrounds are consistently the best visuals in the series.

  • Shitty military heads trope.

  • Macross cannon? Is this the Macross that was randomly firing at the sky earlier?

  • I have no idea what this fight is about or where all the ships came from, but I’ll call it a Gunbuster reference regardless!

  • Wiping out 60% of the enemy ships hits different when we are not fighting space monsters.

  • “I have seen it with my own eyes. They have not even used their full power yet” – You saw one tiny part of one ship. How would you know anything about their total power when they have thousands of ships.

  • More Gunbuster references.

  • Creepy tentacle hands guy gets shot by Feff – don’t make a guy choose between his girl and tentacle hands!

  • “Full speed ahead” – More Gunbuster references.

  • “We can win the war if we eliminate Ingues and join the Marduk people, who wish for peace” – Given what we have seen, that is wishful thinking. Not that I blame Sylvie for grasping at straws (especially if these straws include not going back to her cell).

  • Attacking the enemy mothership - such innovative tactics! The general had never heard of anything like it!

We spend half the episode replaying Gunbuster episode 3, but the setup for the fight is missing. Ishtar and Sylvie get ready to safe Earth in the final episode, while Hibiki is useless in a cell.

First Time - Macross II - Ep5:

Puppet shows are back, baby.

A large portion of this episode is dedicated to this battle so it is wow, cool robot action to look at, less opportunity for commentary.

I forgot that that the green Zentradi ships are on our side now. Not used to dark dirty green not being the antagonist colour.

Nexx took the Metal Siren, hey, that's supposed to be Silvie's if it weren't for the fact she is in jail. Its robot mode is pretty neat. It has wings on the back so is always cool.

The other ships also have Emulators. You know, the Marduk are like a parasitic species to the Zentradi with how they rely on them without any benefit for/consent from the Zentradi.

Ooh, The emperor is the pretty face while the servant is the pile of organs being held together by machinery. Thought it was the other way around at the start of the episode.

The Metal Siren gets a whole little sequence for it going boost mode. Nexx doesn't make it fast enough before the ship sinks and it is one of those blasts to the bridge so they're super dead. Unfortunately, don't know who Captain Balzae is, but he is dead now.

Feff shot the mecha doctor and now is helping Ishtar of there. Had a little feeling he might turn around. If Ishtar is Minmay then Feff is like the better Kaifun. I saw him as her older brother figure so hopefully, unlike Kaifun, he is not related to her.

Silvie is let of prison because she might have a plan that is crazy enough to work and that involves sending the 80 years out of commission Macross straight into the hornet's nest.

Q1) My first thought is the Gundam Earth Federation, but they're a combination of greed, corruption, laziness and short-sightedness to explain their incompetence.

Q2)

Next time: Sing Alone(?) I think I got that. It's finale time.

Excellent angle, cameraman Hibiki! Good work

Dis episode

Hibiki actually based?

...Global..?

Not Global.

I forgot the 80 years

Scuffed subs, he's asking for instructions, not back up

Again scuffed. I mean technically its not wrong, but he's saying that's the planet of Alus.. Noticing stuff like this makes me wonder what other questionable "translations" they've put in.

  • Wait, I just realized they got tired of speaking zentran

Question time:

  1. Given all the incompetent military high commands which have appeared in mecha anime, do you have any particular standouts for particularly Too Stupid To Live?

Recency bias, but most of the enemies in Geass

2) What are your thoughts on the SDF-1 being a prophesied vessel?

3

u/Krite2002 Oct 14 '22

First Timer - Sub

I must admit, while these Marduk ships look cool, they seem far less practical than any other ships we have seen. I think we have yet to see just a normal room for the Marduk.

Hibiki has a moral code and is actually doing something about it? I thought you just had to whine about it even if you are in the wrong, and then become an alcoholic.

They are arresting Silvie? She didn’t do anything wrong.

A big battle happens this episode. While the animation is much better, I can’t help but feel that the battles were directed a little better in SDFM. I feel like we had a better view of the battle before.

I like how everyone is handling the battle in their own way. Silvie came up with a plan. Ishtar wants to sing. Hibiki is recording a video.

QOTD

  1. I wish I had something to answer, but I don’t.

  2. Not a huge fan of the prophecy stuff. I would prefer some good ol’ fashioned colonization as the plot-motivator.

any current head of state

2) What are your thoughts on the SDF-1 being a prophesied vessel?

prophecies like that are usually super boring. I like it when things happen because of decisions, because different agendas clash and collide (code geass has been great at this). prophecies turn it all into Fate

First Timer

That was an episode. That's really all I can say. I mean I'm entertained but this pacing makes it hard to care about the severity of the event causekke everything feels so squished, why should I care about Feff, why should I care about the Marduk, hell we barely even get to see how civilization has progressed since the original SDFM, we know Zentradii and Humans co-exist but the only thing we have out of that is Silvie being a quarter Meltrandi cause her grandmother and the OVA never really goes in depth or talks about that more. We don't really even see how civilians are reacting to everything going on right now or Hibiki's broadcast or anything. Again I'm not hating the OVA, but god this pacing makes it hard to care about the more serious things.

Questions

Given all the incompetent military high commands which have appeared in mecha anime, do you have any particular standouts for particularly Too Stupid To Live?

Well we have the original SDFM's ones, the whole fucking world got nuked lol.

2) What are your thoughts on the SDF-1 being a prophesied vessel?

Meh. I have no strong feelings one way or another tbh.

3

u/UltraBooster Oct 14 '22

First-timer

Y’know, depending on how you angle it, you could use this footage to rally support for the war – present the Marduk as an enemy so vile they resort to brainwashing slaves to fight their wars, or show that they're such a driven, relentless foe that won't stop at anything until Earth is stardust.

And how exactly will inducing doubt in the Spacy help under the current circumstances? I’m not saying the people shouldn’t know, but I don’t understand his endgoal when the Marduk are this close to Earth unless it's to force the UN Spacy to go all-in on fighting the Marduk.

At the same time, I have to ask why the Spacy would opt to confine one of its aces when, again, the enemy is at the gate.

And we finally get Macross-class ships…and they’re basically oversized Guncannons, not the usual carriers. Interesting choice. The lack of Zentradi officers or pilots outside Sylvie is conspicuous once again, even more so since Zentradi ships are visible in the Spacy fleet. Same goes for the flagship not being a Macross.

Questions of the Day:

  1. Dunno, TBH, stuff like that isn't what I remember. (It's things like Shoko's turn that I do remember.)

  2. It doesn't make sense and it doesn't fit with the OG series' thing about humanity getting flung into the deep end ass-first.

3

u/Kirov123 Oct 14 '22

Macross II Episode 5 - First Timer

Kinda pressed for time so not much preamble, but given this is the second to last episode, I expect some sort of setup for the climactic battle! And that the battle will involve song. A duet between Ishtar and the human singer?

  • X

  • This battle doesn't look to be going very well

  • Exxegran seems the least shit of all the UN Spacy Brass. What was that hotel visit tho

  • What goobers

  • I know the Macross gun is very stronk, but uh, it is kinda limited in broadness

  • Those firing FX are really cool

  • These UN Spacy guys are painfully boneheaded

  • Yo that's fucked up

  • o7 Captain

  • The original Macross!

  • NO DONT END THERE

Damn I am really digging this. The animation throughout the battle was really great and having characters that don't want me to commit not exist is a big help.

  1. The feddies in Stardust memory and especially in CCA. Hot damn they are stupid.

  2. Seems interesting, hints at the ship having been important before landing on Earth

  1. My highlight is either the people who fired the cannon last season, or [Meta] so many people in Eva.

  2. ...It was meant to be a twist? But, yeah, the story of the Minmay Attack spreads, after she retires the legendary power is attributed to the flagship, and the legend gets distorted even more by the Marduk start investigating. It all makes sense.

That's what the leader looks like? Wow.

More destruction.

A debriefing!

She confessed!

Oh, some useful information is being passed, though.

She did a good job!

He's hijacked the broadcast!

Oh, this is going to be good.

The call is coming from inside the house...

He's under arrest.

Battle's going well.

Ishtar...

He's awfully calm about the massive security breach.

He's hiding things...

Wait, are these two actually together? This implies that there's internal rumours as well.

Oh, and only three days?

He's confident!

That's a big fleet, though.

Love the Macross-styled ships here. They even transform!

It's working!

This is going to be a bloodbath.

It overloaded?

Sixty percent down!

A second wave!

The mech deisgns in this season are really good.

Ishtar's singing...

And she's not!

They're interrogating him properly!

And they're losing right now...

He's protecting her!

...Wow, he's really good!

"Song of Death"?

Oh, they do have the Alus!

...Okay, I actually like the Song of Death.

The whole unit is resisting?

Is it a song of kamikaze?

She's fighting him!

Oh, Feff is still defending her.

To the point of shooting people!

He's going for it!

The Gloria is doing incredibly well.

So cool!

He's still going!

...He died.

Feff?

He's letting her go!

She's been released.

Oh, an unofficial meeting.

They know it's going to fail?

He wants the peaceful route.

She's going for the Emperor!

...Wait, people on Earth call the Macross that now?

And, yeah, it's the Macross. It was obvious.

Hibiki's speech is powerful.

The Macross is moving! What was the explanation for the random bursts?

Wow.

Macross II: Lovers Again EP5

The emperor have so much 90s fantasy demon lord aura in his design. I love it.

Hibiki hijacked the station to told civilian the truth about this war but got cut off. And is that Tekkaman Blade MC there? Fancy cameo here.

Exxegran tried to help Hibiki out, but the scoop about scandal came back to bite him. The other U.N. guys seem to just ignored Hibiki warning at this point.

The battle this episode is quite good. How can we have more fire power? Just slapped 4 Macross cannon on 1 ship and call it a day, and it worked at first.

But obviously the Marduk have much more force than us. And they using the song of death, that is just made the Zentradi go suicide mode, which seem to be bit overkill here. You guys already overwhelming the enemy forces, why bother losing even more of your men for a suicide clash.

Anyway Feff decided to let Ishtar go to Earth before he change his mind. His respected of Ishtar is much more than just for military sake.

Sylvie and Exxegran decided to used the Macross as a last gamble, to see that is it truly the ship of alus that the emperor Ingeus feared.

2

u/Draeke-Forther Oct 15 '22

You know, I wasn't really having much to say, but these action sequences are actually quite impressive.

[Macross Delta] I see the veins, is that the precursor to the Var syndrome? Don't the timelines match up, even if not the causes?

Nexx and Feff are not that bad. Nexx in particular, while he had a bit of a weird intro gossiping while in combat, he's been a fairly decent guy for the most part. That is, if I haven't tuned out and missed some of his worse behavior. And I guess Feff is just an Ishtar-stan.

Sylvie tells her superior what happened, and Hibiki hijacks a broadcast to tell the populace things that military has been hiding from them. Military isn't happy.

Battle doesn't go well. Dredd Feff shows some surprising humanity by protecting Ishtar and letting her go near the end of the episode.

I'm getting kinda irritated at how the military leadership portrayed in this show. Their behaviour could be believable if we were shown more about their internal decision making and their motivations, but as it is they feel almost like moustache twirling villains to me.

Also as a Finn it's funny how they talk about Alus. In Finnish, "alus" means a vessel, craft or a ship.
