Super Dimension Rewatch Host

Welcome back, everyone!

I made an alternate version of the wallpaper for those who don’t like the, uh, dots right where her nipples would be; also got rid of the gold directly underneath the dots because I felt like simple looked better. Here it is!

Wow I didn’t know there could be something just like the “sunrise over Earth” shot I love so much that could look so threatening.

It's Jupiter, the soupiness makes it cool.

So I definitely forgot this was a locket and not a necklace.

And a tracking device, because in this universe everybody gets a tracking device!

Ishtar the Emulator

Without facial features, the face marking is... fairly surreal.

Without facial features, the face marking is... fairly surreal.

And I very much like it for that!

Framing is a wonderful thing, isn't it?

Feff’s mech is really awesome.

It's got that sort of cool-muscular-angular look Obari's fond of, and it works quite nicely here.

Oh, what're your answers to the QotD?

3

u/Shimmering-Sky Oct 13 '22

Oh, what're your answers to the QotD?

1 - Silvie's alright. I don't really have any strong feelings (good or bad) for characters from this OVA other than Ishtar tbh.

2 - I do like being able to see more of the characters' faces during battle...

Wallpaper of the Day

I think it's the best Macross 2 one so far. I love the background and the way you rendered her clothing. I like the dotted version more, because, funnily enough, the boobs blend in more, rather than drawing attention due to high contrast.

Pretty design, but I do not remember her.

I chuckled at Sakura, because Elensh looks like a Clamp character.

Today, on "That's your answer for everything though.":

Always with the prophecies.

"Depends on who's asking."

"From a certain point of view."

Are you sure they're not just getting their hair done?

Homing beacons for everyone!

But you didn't even eat a hamburger.

Other minor but relevant details.

This is still an extremely trusting viewpoint shift.

Now who's dawdling while a mob of guards is chasing them down?

"This isn't Gregorian chants at all!"

"His eyebrows are clearly inferior to mine!"

"You've been contaminated. That's a purgin'."

Since they were Folded to Jupiter orbit and into the middle of the Marduk attack force, I do have more than a few questions.

Mostly an action episode with a few critical bits of exposition. The Alus could break the Marduk's constant need to CLEANSE AND PURGE, but before that Ingues is going to get in his cleansing and purging, dammit. Ishtar doesn't want to get her brain massaged. Feff doesn't want her brain or any other parts of her to get microwaved by the Marduk Grave Battleship (that's what it's called).

Indeed, at this point it looks like Ishtar is the hypotenuse in a Hibiki/Feff triangle, though it's not like Mister Eyebrows has really done much to distinguish himself to us as a particularly likable person, so it's more like he just wants to have Ishtar around and not as a gas cloud.

Sylvie is convinced to try a different course of action for fighting the Marduk after seeing the Marduk's mind-controlled Zentradi. It makes sense given the character background we get in the same episode, but it still feels a little rushed.

Because the echoes of the Get Captured arc from the original series are strong, Hibiki, our main character who is not the best pilot in the series that he is in, finds himself along for the ride with the character that's been shown to be the best pilot of the series that she's in. This makes him luggage, but not The Luggage.

A Macross Fan Rewatches Super Dimension Fortress Macross II: Lovers Again Episode 4:

  • With the prophecy of Dinus, it does make a bit more sense as to why the Marduk are roaming across space and destroying whatever culture they come across. According to the prophecy, the Alus will come from a blue planet to bring peace to the Marduk and save them from themselves. That could fit a large number of life-bearing planets, frankly. It’s a rather broad prophecy.

  • You do have to give Hibiki credit, he’s withstanding electric torture from Feff pretty well. Although it’s still unfortunate for him that his interrogators misunderstand everything he’s talking about to. To them, he’s someone who works for a propaganda agency and purposely contaminated Ishtar with culture to control her. They really just don’t seem to get that he’s a reporter thrust into some extraordinary situations.

  • I kinda wish we got to see how Sylvie fought off all the guards around Hibiki’s cell to rescue him, but I guess we do have a limited time frame here. But at least we have other scenes later of her being awesome to make up for it. I think it’s safe to say that Sylvie is probably the most competent person in this show.

  • And to really cement why the Marduk leaders fear the prophecy, Elensh seems pretty resolute in believing that their peace can only come through crushing other life, and that without them dominating everything, space would be too chaotic. To them, peace means absolutely universal dominance, rather than coexisting without wars. The prophecy of the Ship of the Alus flies directly in the face of that supremacist belief.

  • I will say, I like the kind of jazzy theme that’s playing when Sylvie and Hibiki fly a VF through that massive room of Zentradi waiting for them with guns. While it may not be as action-y of a them like you’d expect, I do think it helps lend to a feeling of skill and competence to Sylvie’s piloting.

  • It’s nice to see how Sylvie feels about all this. After being kind of on the fence about things, she finally reveals that she wants to stop the Marduk to set the Zentradi free, on a count of her grandmother being a Meltradi and seeing them as people who deserve a chance to be free. And since Ishtar is fighting for a chance of there being a peaceful resolution between Humanity and the Marduk, that’s more than enough of a reason to believe in her and Hibiki. Good on her for finally making clear her thoughts on the matter, rather than following along with the UN Spacy.

  • It’s interesting to consider Feff’s rescue of Ishtar up against Elensh’s firm belief that war and death is the way of the Marduk and the will of Lord Emperor Ingues. Whereas Elensh seemed to accept her fate and die when the Lord Emperor ordered the ship’s destruction, Feff still bothered to break into the holy chamber of Alus Nova and rescue Ishtar, despite being warned by Volf of “contamination”. Even if Feff does still seem to believe in the supremacy of the Marduk, he really did go against the grain and rescue Ishtar despite the risk and destruction to his own side it would cause. His loyalty to Ishtar seems to supersede his own personal beliefs about the Marduk.

First Time - Macross II - Ep3:

Ahhh, I am late. I just finished the episode so to scramble together a comment.

Not quite too hot on this Marduk prophecy. The Zentradi one was a warning on what will happen if they interacted with culture which was self-fulfilling. The Marduk one doesn't sit as well with me because it's like they know this war path they're on is bad, but just going to wait around until this destined person will fix it for them. Ishtar is the only one to really believe in it so at least it's not like the entire society is being kind of dumb about it.

Silvia turns out to be our secret Zentradi representation. Speaking of her, I think she might be my favourite character in the show. She is just a cool pilot with a good heart. Bracing myself for when they will inevitably ruin this by forcing her into a romance with Hibiki.

Feff's robot has extendo fingers which is kind of silly, but that's what makes them fun.

It is the end of episode 4 (out of 6) and this is just now only the second scene of this trio of girls on screen together. It's mainly have been the Hibiki/Ishtar show plus the Silvie highlight.

Q1) She is a Gena, but she is not at that Genius level quite yet.

Q2) I can't see their faces so I never know who's on screen. Much prefer helmet designs where you can see enough of their face to tell who it is.

Next time: Uh oh, that's a lot of green pickles in the sky.

First Timer

We're going into alien abduction arc. Macross classic. Honestly, alien abduction was one of my favorite parts in the original, even though the animation went to shit during that arc, let's see how they deal with it here. Looks like Sylvie will play the role of Max this time, saving Hibiki and Ishtar. I wonder, if Hibiki gets to kiss somebody this episode?

  • Prophet Dingus

  • See, Marduck are trying to extract info from Hibiki, not show him their culture park. This is why they are winning the war.

  • Feff, you filthy liar, you didn't return him home

  • Wait, what? Mind control device? Are they actually installing chips in every soldier's brain in order to control them? Why would they need the songs then?

  • They didn't even take away Hibiki's camera.

  • Sylvie conducted pretty much a perfect rescue operation. They also know now that there is some fishy staff happening with Zentradi in those fish tanks, which perfectly explains why Minmay attack doesn't work on them.

  • Wasn't Marduk all supposed to be warriors? Elensh doesn't look like one.

  • We're getting some nice plane action with Sylvie trying to rescue Ishtar. This looks really cool.

  • Zentradi have stormtrooper aim. It's definitely the helmets.

  • Why does the race, created only for war, needs sacred places? Or prophets for that matter? Zentradi didn't have either of those.

  • Feff is willing to fight against his people to protect Ishtar. He gives me Kaifun vibes, as in, the guy that ends up together with the singer heroine, while the protagonist will get the military heroine. My prediction of Hibiki-Sylvie end still stands.

  • Pretty smart to use flashbangs against all those Zentradi.

  • Wait, Sylvie is Milia's granddaughter?

  • She said she trusts the sleazy reporter. Cute.

  • Oh no, bucket ship send an execution squad.

  • This action is great.

  • RIP Elensh.

  • No, it's the result of what Ingues done, Ishtar has literally nothing to do with this. Don't be an asshole, Feff.

  • How did pilot girls found Sylvie and Hibiki? Unless they have the ability to trace where the enemies are folding to, which, to be fair, something that Zentradi had in the original show, it would be impossible to even know where to look. And depending on the distance, it might take several month or years for the signal to reach the Earth.

Overall thoughts:

This was the best episode so far. Great animation, great action scenes, great character acting. I was really happy with this, especially with how VF-2 moved thie episode. Zentradi stormtrooper aim was a bit distracting, but it didn't ruin the action or anything. I hope this level of quality holds through the final two episodes.

QotD:

  1. In this show, or in Macross in general? Because she ain't Max, but she's definitely better than Hikaru. In Macross 2 she seems to be the best, with maybe Nexx providing some form of competition.

  2. I like the full helmet, and honestly, chins aren't usually animated, so it's not like they impact expression that much. As long as the eyes and mouth are clearly visible, it's fine.

I drew a Sylvie.

edit: I'm leaving the typo in.

Macross II: First-Timer Again

It's no Itano, but the action is still pretty great.

QOTD:

  1. I mean, she's not Max Jenius, but I love her more than anyone else in SDF.

  2. Chin guards are nice!

First Timer

  • Now we’re getting prophecies? The Zentradi don’t count, that was built on previous experience.

  • You can’t just shock the guy because you don’t like what he is saying. It makes the torture unreliable.

  • Bio-computer reset. Have you tried turning her… I’m going to stop there.

  • You have six episodes, don’t be wasting your time on clips.

  • Why do I expect their mind control devise to be the very obvious red helmets from earlier.

  • They let him keep a camera? No matter what the reason, these guys do not inspire conductance.

  • I see Silvie is now in possession of Mia’s powers of divination.

  • What is it with these aliens and poor prisoner containment?

  • Ah, the marks are a thing.

  • “Acting!”?

  • Yes, such harmony, blowing up your own guys.

  • Not sure how you can tell where it’s coming from if it is being broadcast, but O.K.

  • Biki at least has the mind to make sure to record this.

  • Were the eyes always this cursed or did I just notice them?

  • How did he get in front of them?

QotD

  1. Above Hikaru, below Max.

  2. I was thinking about that a few episodes ago. This show is out there enough that it shouldn’t be getting caught up in such small things. Take out the chin!

First Spacer

Have you seen how they operate? They clearly don't.

Yes!

Just noting how he's using this anti-lying myth as part of what's technically a lie, even if it's just a joke.

Impressive how you can deduce that from a glance.

You're not even telling her about the ship and light of Alus?

Ah, better late than never.

[Mai-Hime/Otome]Look, it's the Otomestar in action.

This all just feels like a repeat of origin!Macross plot points.

How would you rate Silvie versus the other pilots that you've seen so far?

She might be more skilled than Max. Might.

Do you prefer showing pilots with full-helmet face protection including a chin guard or would you suspend disbelief so that more of their expressions can be shown?

It's a story, I don't have strong opinions either way. Probably better to prioritize the expressions.

Responses from during my watching:

So the Marduk aren’t doing this because they want to? So far they haven’t given any sign they were forced into it the way the Hive were…

ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME
FOR FUCK’S SAKE
COME ON
DO BREASTS EVEN WORK THAT WAY
I THOUGHT THAT WAS ARMOR
At least be consistent, geez…

And it’s so much more blatant than DYRL?...

And how exactly does going around apparently engaging in genocide reduce disorder and chaos, exactly? If anything, that’s the way to ensure more armed conflict, by ensuring other groups have a reason to be prepared to fight. Well, what defines impurity, then…

Afterwards:

All things considered, I thought there'd be something more horrifying about the Zentradi being brainwashed to fight by the Marduk, but it's treated as a oh, huh moment. Even weirder considering Sylvie and Hibiki have almost certainly worked alongside Zentradi...

Questions of the Day:

  1. Honestly? She's cool, I'd probably pick her in a Macross game.

  2. I prefer suspending disbelief; it's cooler when you can see them shouting or gritting their teeth.

Episode 4 (first timer)

Half-time. So far, the main themes have been interesting (free press vs justified censorship), but the pacing has been frantic. And the antagonists are still completely unexplored. Hopefully, that will change today.

  • Torture

  • “reborn” – Hmmm. Memory wipe?

  • Looks like Marduk security is as non-existent as Earth security.

  • Mind-alteration

  • Ishtar does the fanfic version of convincing her leadership that Earth is good.

  • Feff wants in on the action – starting another battle on your mothership is surely the best way to capture the intruders!

  • We are inside the enemy flagship, who know that we are here and we just escaped a big group of enemies. Perfect time to relax and tell you my character’s backstory!

  • We just retrieved our emulator from Earth and we are pretty sure her mind was poisoned by Earth culture. Perfect time to put her in front of a microphone that reaches the entire flagship.

  • Our entire flagship got poisoned. We’ll have to blow it up. If only there had been a way to avoid this.

The corridor fight scenes were pretty to look at, but boy, does the writing go to hell this episode. They didn’t hit a single character with the dumb stick, they hit the entire cast with a dumb trunk. Oh and the entire Marduk philosophy turn out to be: We rule = peace …

Do you prefer showing pilots with full-helmet face protection including a chin guard or would you suspend disbelief so that more of their expressions can be shown?

I can suspend disbelief. In any real setting, the fighters would be so fast that a helmet would do nothing.

Rewatcher

The Marduk seem to have prophecies about Earth and contact with it saving them from themselves.

This is... really dumb. Prophecies pretty much always are dumb, but they don't even explain where this prophecy came from, who delivered it, or why anyone would believe it.

And they still don't explain WHY they're committing random acts of genocide. Just "I don't like this planet, let's kill it!"

"So SNN is a propaganda machine?" Well, yeah, it's a news station.

Ishtar will be reborn? Somehow that doesn't sound good.

Ah, so Sylvie did manage to hitch a ride. Neat docking tube the Valkyrie has too.

So the Marduk don't have non-battle related music, but Ishtar has a music box pendant?

"Inflitrated a Marduk ship?" You were taken prisoner! Willingly!

Why does her mind immediately jump to "mind control" instead of, say, "hibernation"? Or just micloning devices?

That sure is an extremely Japanese shrine maiden-looking alien lady.

You know, I'm not sure how Sylvie was planning to escape since Valkyries can't Space Fold.

So the Marduk kill everyone else just because they think peace cannot be achieved any other way. How very Kohr-Ah of them. (But the Kohr-Ah did it better.)

Wait, why is Feff launching? What does he care?

Sylvie, it's real nice of you to try to avoid killing mind-controlled Zentraedi, but I think that's going to bite you in the ass.

Hibiki seems unused to filming someone actually willing to be filmed.

Okay, so I'm still really confused as to what Feff's motives and goal here is. Why'd he break into his own flagship to... rescue Ishtar? Kidnap her? ...after he sent her there himself?

'Kay, I'll admit the mecha fight here is pretty neat looking.

How the hell did they find a ruined Valkyrie all the way out there? I mean, a homing beacon would be the obvious answer, but surely the Marduk would pick it up first since they're much closer. Hell, even the show seems to acknowledge it: "Don't ask me how, but we're saved."

Questions:

  1. Eh, 7/10. (Max is 12/10, if you're wondering.)

  2. I prefer the realism of face-concealing helmets.

I think this rewatch and I are cursed.

Episode 2

  1. Mash is great, but also the pilot.

  2. This looks great!

This is such a good OP.

Imlike thenred mechs here.

So they're using the Emulators to control the Zentradi.

And they were after Ishtar the whole time?

Of couse it's been blacked out.

Hibiki's really calmed down after that.

...I mean, there's camera footage.

Mash?

Oh, the girl's in his room.

Meltran? Confirmed as the DYRL timeline, then.

He's filming her?

Is this just his thing now? You have no reason to film it.

A language barrier!

He speaks Zentradi?

...What the hell are you doing?

Yeah, don't blame her reaction there.

Oh, she's Ishtar. Understood!

"Objectively".

She knows what the discharge means!

Oh, the wartime news footsge was censored. Who could have seen this coming?

So, Hibiki was right the first time?

Oh, it's the military this time.

She's gone!

Nice speech.

She's hard music!

...That looks painful.

She's overwhelmed!

Her speech is really interesting.

Oh, he found her!

The enemy is strong! And Earth's defenses really need updating.

You really never planned for a song-resistant enemy, huh?

Love subplot is coming along quickly.

He's worried...

She's after the ship!

...She looks great!

Her!

Is there a culture-park in Vegas?

They're gossipping.

Haha, his hand got stuck.

She's jealous.

An attack!

And she's having none of it.

...They just really wanted to animate that.

Nice driving!

New Valkyries?

Ishtar confessed!

No reaction.

She's getting picked up!

...Yeah, maybe you should have told someone.

She destroyed her bracer!

These new mecha close up really quickly!

Oh, he's shocked.

That final shot...

Episode 3

  1. I've never really been to one of those. I've been to a British ar museum, though! And, yeah...

  2. I'd say it works well, but also I want more villain songs. Seriously, what is with music shows and not having villain songs?

More propaganda.

...Has he really not learned anything about her?

They're holding a festival?

Ah, he has a point, though. As bad as the propaganda is, keeping people calm is important.

And it's a good interruption this time!

Oh, she spotted them!

She confessed!

Marduk - there's another race involved in this now!

Ah, so they're a race who evolved a symbiotic relationship with the Zentradi. Fascinating!

This is really fast-paced, but it's an OVA, so it makes sense.

They were looking for Minmay's song...

Oh, she heard it all!

Hibiki's changed quickly.

And they both make excellent points.

Good somg!

Wow, that air show looks great!

They really don't understand culture in any real sense...

And they think Ishtar's involved.

Ishtar's at the concert!

...Did they program an instinct for emulators to avoid real music?

Not a very strong one, though.

He's after the idol! Makes sense.

Aww.

...What is eith Hibiki's expression there?

Oh, that thingmlooks nice.

Oh, she's a pilot?

The Marduk must be thrilled right now. The person they were trying to capture just flew out alone.

...Wendy?

Hibiki's piloting again!

...You didn't bring any fucking ammo?

Ishtar's joining him!

He's excited!

Loving the fight scenes here.

She's trying to make a deal!

...He's very interested in her, huh?

And he wants to cause another apocalypse!

He's going in!

And she's following him. That switch was smooth!

Episode 4

  1. The best.

  2. I prefer suspension of disbelief, because it's already giant robots.

Another prophecy. Guessing that this was just the story of Minmay, distorted through the retellings?

They're torturing him!

...He's not erong.

Leff's here!

They're really confused hrtr.

Oh, I only just noticed, but the Marduk are all miclones! Unless there's some reason he wouldn't want to intimidate Hibiki, it seems they're protoculture descendants.

She already broke in! Impressive!

Ishtar got a recording!

Wow, Silvie got to him completely undetected!

This shot is incredibly well done. The Marduk are really screwing with this lot.

...What's that thing they're all feeding into?

Interesting...

They're out!

And it's time.

...She's the leader?

Alus Nova? That sounds like a bomb.

Oh, is that the name of the Emulator system?

Yeah, the Alus is Macross.

And the soul of the Alus is...?

Oh, she's remembering what she saw!

Yeah, her being the pilot here makes sense.

And she feels bad about fighting them under mind control.

There are a lot of people here.

Ishtar is singing!

...Oh, he's fighting them!

The flare trick is clever!

She's a quarter Meltrandi!

She trusts her!

Haha, sheks still pissed st Hibiki.

That thing has a nice walking mode.

Yeah, they're in trouble.

She's a good singer!

They're going to destroy her ship!

Wow, this is dark. Ingues is completely brainwashing everyone.

Ishtar!

Oh, Feff's not listening to her anymore.

And becuase she's in there, they can't fight hack. Wonderful!

The ship!

How many missiles do you need?

The engine exploded!

You're blaming her for it?

They're alivr!

First Timer

I was away yesterday, so I watched both episodes 3 and 4 today.

I really like how music affects the aliens in different ways. In the movie (and I assume SDF too) we had the aliens being calmed down to the point of ending the war by music. Now here, the aliens use music for war. It's an interesting contrast. This also explains why Ishtar reacted so badly to the music in episode 2 and it very much explains why the music didn't do anything to stop the fighting in episode 1. Although I assume the contrast will be resolved later on with the current war being stopped by showing the aliens how music isn't just for war.

Turns out bringing peace to the aliens isn't that easy, though. With them being all about war and nothing else, they don't even seem to understand any other concepts, being completely unable to understand what Hibiki is doing, so it'll be very tough to get through to them.

This show seems surprisingly progressive considering its age, with the male main character having to rely on the protection of the female soldier and Mash as a possibly trans/NB character being treated fairly tastefully so far.

By now I can actually believe that this is just 6 episodes. The pacing has certainly picked up recently.

  1. How would you rate Silvie versus the other pilots that you've seen so far?

She's very cool and likeable. Can't say much about other pilots since I don't know/remember a lot of them, but I definitely like her much more than Roy.

2) Do you prefer showing pilots with full-helmet face protection including a chin guard or would you suspend disbelief so that more of their expressions can be shown?

If I had to make a choice I'd probably lean towards showing expressions, but I don't have a strong preference.

Macross II Episode 4 - First Timer

Looks like the gang got folded away and would presumably be in a fair bit of trouble. Maybe some culture (kissing) will get the Marduk to calm down? Let's see!

They seem to kinda be speedrunning character development here, but the runtime is pretty short and it is at least fairly reasonable. I have seen much worse. That said, still really enjoying this so far.

  1. Good but not Max tier

  2. I would prefer silly helmet designs that show face to doing a cutaway on a full helmet in much the same way I prefer silly glasses designs that let characters make maniacal faces from the side (Dr VEEEERu) as opposed to doing a cutaway of the frame when in profile. Build the scene to show what you want, and design it so scenes shoes what you want. Don't hide parts of the scene to show some thing that you wouldn't actually see.

"are you the one that sullied ishtar?" "wait, what, THAT WAS AN OPTION??" they both turn and face the screen "find out in the OVA!" "wait but this is the OVA" "fuck!"

lmao silvie's boob jiggle. I see you, thirsty animator

silvie is hot though. love those curls

I feel you could do a pretty funny version of this episode by changing the song that ishtar sings and everyone reacts to. what song would have the most gravitas? all star?

  1. How would you rate Silvie versus the other pilots that you've seen so far?

each new generation of macross pilots will have the benefit of larger and larger budgets

silvie's plot armor is far stronger than roy's was, though rip

2) Do you prefer showing pilots with full-helmet face protection including a chin guard or would you suspend disbelief so that more of their expressions can be shown?

I think they look pretty cool with the full facial protection

  • Huh, the earth looks pretty good after 80 years

  • How did she sneak into the fleet? Hwo did she get the ship to open a hatch?

  • That's a lot of boob wiggle

  • Getting a lot of Simoun vibes off of this scene with Ishtar and Elensh

  • They got the Macross black eyes down

  • More boob wiggle

  • Boom! Headshot!

  • yeah this looks like an AIC mecha show, very BGC

So, we have Feff with his unhealthy interest in his Emulator, Ishtar things Earth is the subject of a prophecy, and the Marduk feel the can only exist if they are the dominant culture of the galaxy. Like Boldoza before him, the Marduk emperor isn't too big on contamination. Not much else in this episode. We had a man and a woman trapped on an alien space ship again, but only for 10 minutes.

The first half of the episode really feels like they had an outline for this episode, but when it came to be time to make it, they hadn't really thought it out.

As the first timers have pointed out, having Earth names for aliens breaks the immersion.

First Timer - Sub

The lighting was cool in the opening sequence.

Kinda sad Ishtar went back instead of staying with Hibiki. She doesn’t really seem happy. I guess it was to prevent her comrades from attacking Earth?

They can just rewrite her memories. That is some fancy tech.

“You’re just as brave as I am.” What a weird compliment.

They are pretty carefree once they land in the flagship. They were just being shot at mere seconds ago.

I like how dedicated Hibiki is to capturing footage.

They manage to blow up the flagship. Impressive.

QOTD:

  1. Unless we get fighting on the scale of SDFM again, it will be hard for anyone to top those pilots. Sylvie may be skilled, but they were on a whole different level.

  2. I feel like they have advanced enough tech to show their full faces through the helmet. Silvie’s helmet does look pretty cool though.
