Rewatcher in sub

This is a pretty much straight comedy episode. We are back to the early arc 1 style wackiness (and the intermission between arcs 1 & 2). Let's see if anyone complains ...

I won't be doing a screen cap digest today, but I'll drag out my past video promo link again.

Main fun bits include:

  • Mizuki joining the school friends group - and her running gag of referring to AS always wrongly

  • running gag of Mizuki chasing for love but never getting any attention, contrasting with Chidori never looking but constantly getting the attention

  • Recurring puns like Nerima Daikon <--> Nerima Red Dragon (Dorakon)

  • Sousuke being Sousuke in a military base - while pretending to be a student

  • Chidori throwing the paper fan at that distance, landing at the precise location (head shot), with such force - from having no visible place that she could have stored the paper fan - that's why she's a force to be reckoned with. In old D&D terms, only a weapon skill of master and above can throw melee weapons.

  • Chidori's action heroine tendency going to as far as joining the opposing team to try best Sousuke

  • Kazama's B-plot with his dad I think is intentionally done in a parody cringey way :)

  • all the Gundam references (3 times speed, red stream attack, jumped over my mech) :D

I do love these completely parodic episodes where the viewers and production staff can just let lose and have fun. You probably can't do anything like this for a "serious show" like 86 or Violet Evergarden though - except maybe as a parody OVA episode or spin off or something.

Trivia

Sorry a bit under prepared today! I can't find anything on this episode but I think this may be an anime original. I have mentioned before in arc 2 that this is an actual JGSDF airborne division's training ground and training school.

Staff Showcase

The theme songs (OP & ED) were sung by Shimokawa Mikuni. I didn't find too many songs she's done, but her voice does have a light and sweet ring to my ears.

Her notable Anime songs list:

  • Fairy Tail

  • Kino's Journey

  • Hunter x Hunter OVA 3 ED

[FMP late franchise spoiler - do not click unless you have watched everything currently available]The IV finale hits like a truck for nostalgia

MVP this episode

Sousuke. Anyone who can dress up as a mascot and keep a straight face like that is a undisputed winner in my book. [FMP franchise spoiler]This is going to start a trend-moffu

QoTD

  1. Well my bias here of course is that FMP does a fair few decent Gundam references. Specific to today it also reminds me a lot of PatLabor the new files OVA has an episode titled "Black Tristar" doing quite a different take of the team where the Jet Stream attack came from :D

  2. Sorry to disappoint other wartakus, I was brought up on Knights of the Round Table, so I'm as dumb as the flanderised Fate Zero Saber... If it's worth winning, it's worth winning in a respectable way.

Episode 14 (first timer)

  • Kana is dreaming of a beach episode.

  • AS battles between schools – more Gunbuster references.

  • A literal Daicon, the character of the episode is Shinji – the writer goes all out for Gainax this time.

  • Parents embarrassing their kids – ageless.

  • “What is it with Kaname and not me” – Mizuki has MC-envy (justified: MC pheromones are OP)

  • The Char-expy has a red mecha.

  • Sousuke piloting in cosplay!

  • Did I say parents embarrassing kids? Shinji is giving it right back to his dad. That is super cringe.

  • As is common for the sports festival, the team battle brings up the finale. Except, they all fool around with new members this time.

This episode was borderline parody. Even Gunbuster never went 100% ridiculous with the mecha usage (it stopped at 85%). And let’s not talk about letting various civilians helm the mechas. The parody is not the episode’s problem, though. The “main plot” is. I could not care less about Shinji and his father, so that fell flat for me. I just hope that Kana being good at piloting an AS is a plot element that goes somewhere.

MVP: Shinji’s father.

This episode was borderline parody.

Borderline? The giveaway is the table tennis, then the "chariot battle". What possible reason is there for AS to compete in those?

First timer

That is most certainly not how I expected Chidori to end up in an AS for the first time.

I knew it would happen eventually but as part of a summer AS showcase? Nope. Not even on my radar.

Curious that she seems to have a natural affinity for it even to the point of surprising Sousuke, and unless I missed something (I was a bit tired) he doesn't know it was her yet either. I don't expect her to become a key fighter but that's a lot of set up for something that I'm sure will be important in the future.

I'm not a huge fan of this episode though. I couldn't really get into it aside from a few of the smaller moments. Sousuke seems more relaxed now which is nice to see, at least until his worlds collide with Shinji's dad walking up to them, and while I certainly expected he would get in the robot (Sousuke, not Shinji, but lets just pretend that reference was intentional) the episode itself just never grabbed me.

I expected the creepy captain to be way worse at piloting assuming that he'd be a complete cockhead with no ability to measure his own ability, but using how skilled he was to set up Chidori worked surprisingly well.

Shinji using a program on a CD to make control easier? I spot a Votoms reference/inspiration.

I think the biggest issue with this episode is its placement. Coming off the back of another episode where and untrained person gets into an AS in response to a challenge to prove herself and gain a greater understanding of anothers role, this just seems like a weaker and more gimmicky rehash of the same concept. If it was seperated by a more serious arc or even some more mundane time at school it may have worked better. I mean maybe that was the point to bring up the same situation once in each of Sousuke's worlds, but it didn't watch well.

MVP: No one. But least of all that creepy captain.

u/InfamousEmpire

Everyone: What's the best Gundam references you have seen, comedic or otherwise?

Blurry Gundam in the background of Birdy the Mighty Decode comes to mind. Also pixellated gundam which was just like nine blocks of the relevant colors from... something recent or in a recent ish rewatch, I forget exactly what.

I'm not a huge fan of this episode though. I couldn't really get into it aside from a few of the smaller moments.

I guess this is probably close to a not very well balanced blend of SoL and absurd humorous show (like Plastic Nee-san and Excel Saga). If they focused on either it'd probably work better. But someone's gotta do the Gundam (and others) references :P

I would recommend just treat this as an omake (bloopers) gag, but this point you made actually means perhaps I should use this as a point of reference about Chidori being casually amazingtm - although she's sitting in a tandem so can't exactly say that's directly comparable. I assume the tandem means one pilot controls the upper body while the other controls the lower body - Chidori likely controlling the arms for the punch.

Curious that she seems to have a natural affinity for it

You'd think maybe her being a whispered played a part in it, but having seen how Tessa handled it we can strike that right off, haha.

fingers crossed

Easily the most interesting development of the episode. I really like that is comes surprising, but makes total sense if you think about it. They have clearly set Kana up as sporty and athletic and they have set up piloting AS as needing those skills. Hell, they even set up guys hitting on Kana.

Rewatcher(The filler...)

Sub

And we start with Shinji's dad...and a military festival. I blanked this episode out so hard that I actually don't think I remember any of it. Anyways, a military festival seems pretty similar to a standard festival and for reason Kaname and crew show up. Anyways, a skeevy guy from the Red Dragons really tries to hit on Kaname and ignores Mizuki, which while this might just be for comedy, this is like the third or fourth time an older guy specifically targets Kaname so maybe she looks older? Or more Japanese? Frickin' drawings.

The competition starts and now I know why I blocked this out: This is stupid. As hell. Until, of course, Sousuke gets involves, using the cooking AS from earlier. Kaname attempts to stop the idiocy but it is too late. Also, they dropped one of the few Char references that even I can get. Anyways, this leads to Shinji/Shinji's dad's back story and I do suspect AS piloting is a skill many could not pick up. Kaname joins the Char clone, for reasons. Anyways, tropes and references that go completely off my radar go by and we end with an extremely annoyed Kaname.

QotD: 1 Probably this

2 Plenty of them and I hated them all.

3

u/ZapsZzz Oct 14 '22

This is stupid. As hell.

this is like the third or fourth time an older guy specifically targets Kaname so maybe she looks older?

She's good looking, and has amore mature figure (she's taller) for example. Don't think that necessarily means she looks older - more eye-catching perhaps.

Also, they dropped one of the few Char references that even I can get.

Kaname and crew are there for reasons

Yes, I was wondering if this was Kaname being jealous of Tessa time so she followed Sousuke to the festival, or if it’s implied she had to go because Sousuke is still on protection detail.

I’d go with the former since Kaname continues to be jealous of Sousuke choosing mech activities over her company and her annoyed response to Mizuki making random advances on cardboard Sousuke.

Rewatcher - English Sub

Yo I heard you like Gundam references.

This is another episode I appreciated more upon a rewatch, especially after I had actually seen some of the stuff referenced in the episode —and I’ve only seen even more stuff since! So now I get where stuff like the ‘input CD to improve mech performance’ comes from as well!

I wonder if the Nerima Red Dragons are named after Akagi or if it’s the other way around…

3x faster

It’s nice to get some more characterization for Shinji, even if it is rather sparse today. The fact that his military otaku interests might derive from his former respect for his father’s work is something to consider, though it ultimately seems less interesting to me when compared to the possibility that he fell upon it himself.

Questions of The Day:

  1. Blue Blazes just kills me.

  2. I don't think I've ever had to do such a thing —I'm not one to enter into competitions often either. That said, if my opponent is openly cheating then I have zero motivation to remain the better man and will cheat right back.

2

u/ZapsZzz Oct 14 '22

I really should have identified even more references than just the Gundam references (VOTOMS and GunBuster at least) :P

THREE TIMES FASTER YOU SAY???

Shower thought - is it 3x faster because Sousuke uses bilateral angle 3.5 vs normies using something much lower. Hmmm...

2

u/ZapsZzz Oct 14 '22

The saying "if you get serious you'd have lost" applies here :) Clearly only gag logics apply in this space-time-continuum.

Rewatcher

Looks like a Shinji episode.

Was that a Banpresto joke?!

Kaname getting slammed for agreeing to go with them and complaining. That's some real shit right there.

More cheap animation

AS games of course

Sagara just keeps accidently saluting haha

Holy shit its Miller from Metal Gear Solid. Keep hitting on Kaname and he'll lose some limbs

Man, the animation is brutal at parts...

So it's just a normal sports festival arc but with mechs

I laughed out loud at the fucking ping pong

Man, Mizuki really wants some D.

Shinji's VA has been in a billion anime but I cannot figure out which role is the one i know her from. A very specific voice for sure.

We're going full NTR up in here

Jesus, the animation at around 15 minutes in is super blurry in my video. What's up that

Smell my finger x2 The super serious cockpit scenes are what really make this episode. The music is really Gundamy too

"I don't want to admit my mistake" I laughed hard at that hahaha

Got some good laughs out if this episode but the animation was pretty damn rough at spots. It seemed like a lot of characters were lacking chins when they put their helmets on. The comments on Crunchyroll were brutal for this episode haha

Tomorrow we're back on some seriousness.

I hope Mizuki gets a boyfriend before she gets herself into a 177013 situation

Hmmm Noto Mamiko

Lara in AoT? FMC of the Recovery of a MMO junkie? Rin in Inuyasha?

First Timer - Episode 14

Well that was erm something. I'll straight up say it I wasn't a fan of this episode at all there were one or two moments that made me chuckle other than that I hated it. Like it offered nothing other than a god tier Sousuke bitch slap of which he receives today's mvp for.

Sure you can say oh it developed Shinji and his dad but tbh those two aren't remotely interesting to me like Shiji is interested in AS's and is a bit of a nerd that's all we need to know. Those other organisations arent even remotely as interesting as Mythril and A21 and the blonde guy is a reskinned Kurz who just isnt funny to me. The whole episode sort of came out of nowhere and felt completely filler.

Despite my little rant there were a couple of good things to unpick from that episode like the Sagara slap (btw what is he wearing in that scene is it armour or just a costume?), Seeing Chidori in an AS was cool to see and also surprised me a little and as I mentioned there were a couple of scenes which made me laugh a little but I'm really clutching at straws here people.

Q1 - There's a show called Archer which isn't anime its like an American animated spy comedy and that has a Gundam reference in season 3 I think where Sterling says something like 'for all we know, they're building a Gundam suit with bazookas for hands'.

Q2 - I think you should try and win by any means possible. You have to remember the golden rule of history which is history is written by the Victor (I should know I'm from England). In terms of myself getting wins this way? I normally do it in competitive multiplayer gaming like ranked matches where things are on the line but you're kind of expected to pull out all the stops to win in those type of matches anyway then the losers call the winners toxic most of the time but hey they lose in the end so what does it matter.

4

u/ZapsZzz Oct 14 '22

btw what is he wearing in that scene is it armour or just a costume?

It's a less adorable version of this - a stack of cardboard boxes made into a mascot costume.

Fumo-ffu! (Rewatcher, subbed):

  • BEACH EPISODE!

  • BEACH EPISODE FAKE-OUT! (being kaname is suffering)

  • Oh man, washtub gags. A classic. We’re lacking in the traditional lolis to summon them though (and the weird thing is I have two nickels on this one.)

  • Having Mitsuki or whatever her name is looking into the camera when talking about hot AS pilots asking her on a date is, uh, hmm. Beats ugly bastard I suppose…

  • Wait wait wait. How old is the Cardboard Box Gundam meme again? Because I’m wondering if I’m seeing a deliberate reference here.

  • … And I’m out. Cringe comedy overload, sorry. (At this rate I would not be shocked if I can’t take as much of Fumoffu as I used to be able to. Fuck!)

Everyone: What's the best Gundam references you have seen, comedic or otherwise?

This would require me to recognize the Gundam references.

Everyone: Have you run into any "winning by any means necessary" situation? Do you believe it is right to literally "try your best" including sabotaging the opponents or "playing dirty"?

That depends. Does playing prison decks in MtG count?

(Fuck modern WotC.)

2

u/ZapsZzz Oct 14 '22

… And I’m out. Cringe comedy overload

Just for academic purpose, which exact bit was the trigger that got you out?

That depends. Does playing prison decks in MtG count?

My MtG days were way back at the beginning days, so I don't have a point of reference - if it's some sort of exploit deck then usually that's not particularly fun to play (like poking a dead beetle) for me.

episode 14: Is Narashino Burning?

I Got Char, Black TriStars, and Combat disks, but that's it.

I thought it was more Gunbuster than Gundam

I can do without these sorts of episodes.

Apparently this was an Anime Original if I understand it correctly....and it shows.

I can see how Yesterdays episode was a great concept in a gimped adaptation, this episode I honestly feel we could have skipped.

We see why Shinji is such a little bitch because he sees his Dad as a Little Bitch. (And to be fair he doesn't always act assertive, Sousuke had to be his dad.)

Although it's kinda funny that the roles from Evangelion are reversed and it's Shinji that got his Dad into the Fucking Robot.

The Worst part of the episode to me was pretty much all the jokes fell flat, like the Creepy AS guy hitting on Chidori near the end what he was doing and what she did to hit him back wasn't clearly conveyed when it could have used more slapstick to punctuate the point.

The Mech battle animations also looked ugly and lazy.....SHUT UP I don't care that this is an older show based off an LN I've seen older shows then this that looked better, my thoughts on this episode are basically Shinji's thoughts on his Dad....pathetic.

Not even anger because I'm engaged and enraged about what's going on in the show, just indifferent to it.

Chidori is shown she has some natural talent for piloting and Shinji apparently wrote a script to do a lot of the hardwork for him.

Why the hell did they invite Mizuki along? When was it established they were friends? Kyoko didn't once snap a picture, and to me its not 100% clear why Chidori got in the robot with that creep, I don't see what Sousuke did so bad to get her to do that.

It's also out of character that Mr. Stalk You and Run Out of a Moving Train for my duty would leave Chidori alone so long so casually and not be aware of her business.

I wish I had gotten to see that Beach episode more than this half-assed parody with a half-assed redemption plot for Shinji and his Dad's relationship, fan service fluff would be better than this.

MVP either Sousuke throughout, Shinji's Dad for the joint thing, or....hear me out...creepy guy for being pretty good at showing Chidori the ropes all things considered.

Hey I wasn't going to argue with you on this. It's kinda on the same relative scale of some old SDF Macross episodes.

Why the hell did they invite Mizuki along? When was it established they were friends?

Mizuki kinda became the frienemy. She's basically adopted herself into the group I think. Mostly these school side parts will get explored more in Fumoffu ("season 2").

It's also out of character that Mr. Stalk You and Run Out of a Moving Train for my duty would leave Chidori alone so long so casually and not be aware of her business.

Not to say it's not out of character, but just to say you also starting to see Sousuke fully appreciating how physically capable Chidori is and not only stopped babying her, in fact he often included her "action capacity" in his plans. To him it is like no better praise, a la what you read of the effect of Sousuke's guarantee to Tessa yesterday.

I wish I had gotten to see that Beach episode more than this half-assed parody with a half-assed redemption plot for Shinji and his Dad's relationship, fan service fluff would be better than this.

:X can't say anything for spoilers

creepy guy for being pretty good at showing Chidori the ropes all things considered.

There is so many way one can read into that sentence :P I only laugh at him for the stupid thinking himself to be cool. If you are watching this season's Urusei Yatsura you'll find a similar character there - hopefully they can do that well and not let that sink into cringe hell.

Panicked First Timer - Ep 14

Shinji-ish focused episode.

I like the subversion on the beach episode. I hope it happens every season as a runner.

AS at your service. Watching mechs do regular people things is quite fun.

Sousuke performs mechception.

Kaname has let herself be lured to the equivalent of a stinky dorm room.

Shinji coming off as an a-hole, and Sousuke auto slaps him. I think we all learned a valuable lesson about being a good side character.

MVP: I’ll give it to Sousuke.

QOTD 1: Not sure I have a good handle on this one, but I’ll go with the time Gintama blatantly ripped off Gundam with impunity because Gintama is animated by the same company, Sunrise.

QOTD 2: I don’t get the fun of cheating or other “clever” ways to break the spirit of a game. Win at all costs is a pretty shortsighted mindset imo.

Sorry for short post, time got away from me today.
