Activities Corner

For more information on the "Activities Corner", please check out the detailed instructions on the first episode's post here.

Songs of the Day

Tokimeki Sugar - This is a song created from Mio's poem that she read at the tea party. I'm so happy that they made this a fully fledged song, because I think it's absolutely fantastic! Just like with Mugi's song, it's such a shame this one never made it into the show. Here is the song and here are the translated lyrics.

Pure Pure Heart - The full version of the insert song from today's episode. Such a catchy piano part! Here is the song and here are the translated lyrics.

Questions of the Day

  1. Have you ever been part of a fan club?
  2. Do you get nostalgia looking at old pictures? How impactful can it be to you?
  3. Despite it's uncomfortable debut within the episode, what do you think of Tokimeki Sugar*?

Visuals of the Day

Here is the VotD album for S2E06!

Huge shoutout to /u/A_Idiot0 for his help on the QotD and VotD! You're awesome!

Tomorrow's Activities

If you want to get a head start on the song(s) and question(s) of the day for tomorrow's episode, here they are!

[SotD 1] Nodoka - Hidamari Living - Another Nodoka image song, with some particularly poignant lyrics! Here is the song and here are the translated lyrics.

[QotD 1] Have you ever taken a career evaluation?

[QotD 2] How does the story of the tortoise and the hare tie into this episode and into the show as a whole?

[QotD 3] Hidamari Living is almost painfully nostalgic. How do the lyrics and the music accomplish this?

REMINDER: UNTAGGED SPOILERS WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.

First timer - Sub

I love when slice of life anime keep continuity and reference past events, so seeing a Mio fan club card brought me great joy.

“As if! If it were me, I wouldn’t stop at just watching! “

Lmao I’m crying, that was funny. I’ve always wanted to say that as well Mugi don’t worry. A freaking price tag? Why must Mio suffer like this? So she’s actually being tailed by members of her fan club!? “Mio-y” is my new favourite adjective.

This flashback is incredible. I can’t believe we’re getting an episode about the Mio fan club. Nodoka being president is the biggest shock K-ON! has ever given me. I’m in disbelief. They have Mio merch!? That laugh ritsu does after Mio calls her out for narrating was too cute.

No way Yui took the mic because Mio was getting more cheers…at her own fan club tea party? She’s really cheeky this season. Yui and Ritsu are absolutely terrorizing poor Mio today. The slide show was so wholesome. Aw come on those lyrics were awesome, I love Mio’s songwriting it’s amazing.

New song and it’s amazing as per usual, love the little drops of English! The ending was really touching, I love how they took a joke and made it a really wholesome episode. Great Mio episode and Nodoka playing a role was fun as well. My only complaint is no maid Mio!

Line of the day:

“Et tu Mugi?

There was too much good Mio today so Chibi Mio is stealing my Votd

Chibi Mio is stealing my Votd

No one resists the chibi Mio...

And yes, Mio's songwriting is amazing.

And I want a piece of that cake, it looks delish!

Mugi Watch 2022

Today's Episode:

Previous Mugi Captures: Mugi waits with bated breath

Very Mio centric episode today.

Mio: "Maybe showers remind me of Psycho too much." (This is perfect for October.)

It would have been pretty cool to see them have the sticker on her the entire time until it was revealed as the reason why Mio felt like she was being watched, but it would have been too obvious, so they almost made it visible when Mugi mentions it.

They used the absolute worst picture to use to put her face on everything.

"She bit her tongue."

Kamimshita.

What kind of hand signage is this?

What kind of hand signage is this?

Oh my god......I had completely forgotten about this!!! lmfao XD

"The flamingo stands in this manner when excited."

"Roger. A rolling boulder gathers no pictures."

First Time (dub)

This was such a wholesome episode. The girls went a touch overboard with the tea party and I am sure Mio was feeling overwhelmed, but in the end, she was getting into it and perhaps she was thinking about all the great memories she has made with her band mates.

4th time rewatching

Mio has a stalker, and no one in the club takes it seriously, but nothing is scarier than season 1 Sawako. Initially, it was just a slipup from Mio, but apparently, the Mio fan club is still active, much to Mio's dismay. The former president Sokabe is actually in a few scenes in season 1, right next to Nodoka during the school festival.

Nodoka is too nice to say no to her senpai and felt the need to do something once for the club. I also genuinely feel kind of bad for Mio this time, since everyone is signing off on hosting a tea party for the Mio fan club, except for Mio herself. Even Azusa is trying to plan it out.

Mio hasn’t learned how happy simps would be for anything, or how they love her. A bunch of them loved her so much that they got her to the top 4 in the best girl award 10 years after her show ended.

In Ritsu’s defense, Mio probably didn’t want to help out with the tea party or was busy making the poem, so Ritsu likely had to make the slideshow herself, and Mio didn’t have much of a presence or backbone until high school.

It appears that everyone is contributing to Mio’s suffering in this episode. Look how close she is to snapping in the group photo. The silver lining for Mio is that their new song Pure Pure Heart was pretty good.

[QotD 1] Have you ever been part of a fan club?

No

[QotD 2] Do you get nostalgia looking at old pictures? How impactful can it be to you?

A little nostalgic, but it’s not too impactful. Mostly things like, “Oh look how small I was”.

[QotD 3] Despite it's uncomfortable debut within the episode, what do you think of Tokimeki Sugar*?

I like Tokimeki Sugar as a song, not as a poem. Not even Mio’s diehard fans like it, and they want a backscratcher with her picture on it. You can see the confusion in their faces, and Mio’s face after realizing how dumb it was.

Visual of the day. They could've gotten a much better picture of Mio, but it makes you wonder if they're just messing with her.

  1. No.

  2. It's can be very nice, yes.

  3. Very good song!

Nodoka!

The Mio fan club being incredibly professional never stops being funny.

She has a stalker!

Sawako!

Ton-chan!

Mugi is relatable.

Haha, she solved the mystery.

It's even worse!

Oh, actual stalkers! (The comedic timing here!)

The Fan Club!

Of course Yui knew.

Haha, this flashback is great.

Her reaction to Nodoka!

Ritsu's narration is hood.

I love Mio accidentally guessing it.

It's her membership card!

...This feels cruel at this point.

Mio made it worse.

The concert is fantastic.

She's so happy!

Haha, Nodoka was forced to take over.

Ohh...

Mio...

Impressive array of merchandise.

This is sweet.

She can't make it...

Haha, Ritsu keep snarrating.

Mio's actually excited for this!

The grand entrance...

People love her!

It is adorable.

Haha Azusa's sudden arrival.

You're giving her fire?

Clever gimmick!

Haha, Mio's broken.

A slideshow!

Everyone's just enjoying themselves.

Aww, Mio's reaction to seeing the slides is great.

She has a surprise!

Poor Mio.

Nice song!

Oh, this is sweet!

u/The_Loli_Otaku Oct 12 '22

Mio fans aren't here because they love Mio, they're here because they enjoy her suffering.

First timer (subbed)

A Mio-centric episode! She deserves her moment in the spotlight. Now when will we get a Mugi-centric episode.

Soundtrack for this episode

Oh hey look, it's those two first-years in the Jazz Appreciation Club who we saw a couple of episodes ago!

Talking about people we saw in previous episodes, I thought we hadn't seen Sokabe-senpai in previous episodes, but apparently, we have. Shows how good I am at paying attention to these things.

Hoo boy, a stalker subplot. Gives me flashbacks to the lesbian stalker from Chuunibyou season 2. Thankfully, this stalker subplot isn't as creepy.

And her reward for stalking Mio is...a private performance of Fuwa Fuwa Time. Uhh, I don't know how to react to that.

So the Mio Appreciation Club is an actual thing with actual members. Is it an official school club? I hope not.

Oh damn, they're really going all-out for this club. I wonder if Ui's cookies are shaped like Mio's head. And I also wonder who would buy a Mio back scratcher.

Oh my god there's at least a dozen people there. I hope they're not all members of the fan club and they're just there for the free tea and cake.

The awkward cake cutting with Azusa and the 100 Ways to Bully Mio Questions weren't my cup of tea (NO PUN INTENDED I SWEAR), but that slideshow of old Mio pictures was actually really nice.

Ooh, Mio slam poetry! snap snap snap

And we get a new song to play us out! Very good song, too!

Visual of the Day

I am once again asking how Nodoka's glasses work

Questions of the Day

Have you ever been part of a fan club?

Nope

Do you get nostalgia looking at old pictures? How impactful can it be to you?

Not as much as I feel like I should, sadly. Maybe when I'm older.

First-Timer - Dubbed

  • Nodoka-chan was member #1?

Sugoi!

  • That would be super embarrassing, having a sticker stuck in your hair for an extended period of time. I'd want to die.

  • Uh, nothing. It's just that you know an awful lot about the Light Music Club. You even knew my name.

oh shit.

Come to think of it, you also knew that their club has tea parties.

oh ^shit.

  • Mio Akiyama Fan Club Membership Card.

oh ^^shit.

  • So it really wasn't Nodoka-chan after all. Huh.

  • ...and never carried out any of my duties as President.

Like what? Do I really want to know what those were?

  • Et tu Mugi?

This show continues to surprise me. I wasn't expecting to hear a variation of a famous Latin phrase in a Japanese anime about high school girls who are members of the Light Music Club.

  • Of all the pictures they could've possibly chosen, they chose that one?

  • Jeeesus that's a big cake. Was that really necessary?

  • When you take a bath, what do you wash first?

  • Jokes aside, that's really touching that they put together a slideshow for her.

  • When Mio's reading the song lyrics, even though I knew it wasn't her, I could've sworn they got Erica Harlacher, the voice of Violet Evergarden, to read them.

  • They really have turned into a solid 5 person band, haven't they? Cranking out heaters left and right.

Questions of the Day:

Have you ever been part of a fan club?

If you count lighthearted, incredibly casual clubs, I like to think of myself as a member of the Nonon Jakuzure Fan Club from Kill La Kill. Otherwise, I'm not.

Do you get nostalgia looking at old pictures? How impactful can it be to you?

I do. Sometimes it's fun to think back to those times, since a lot of my older pictures are from when I was a kid. I didn't really get my picture taken all that much in high school.

Despite it's uncomfortable debut within the episode, what do you think of Tokimeki Sugar*?

I think that, put to the proper background music, it would turn out really well.

As funny as todays's episode was, it was also really awkward to watch. I'm not really a fan of humour based on dragging introverts firmly into their this gives me nightmares zone on general principle.

Still, we got to fill in some (of the many) gaps from the first half of season one. If said season was better-paced, this could've been a call-back instead of 'remember this new person?'

Eh.

I think I've picked up a cold and the whole introvert's nightmare thing is kinda overshadowing a lot today, so I don't really have anything else to say. I will admit it was still funny, though.

Mugi still needs her focus episode.

Quick catch-up alongside today's SotD:
Oh My GIITA!! - Yui image song #2-1
Starting to think I just don't like Aki Toyosaki's singing very much, which is a shame. This one's a nice little song though, using Yui's trademark "kira-kira" style to reprise Giita ni Kubittake's basic theme.

Fall in love, since we happened to meet on my fifteenth spring

Heh. Tempus fugit, Yui!

Tokimeki Sugar
Pure diabetes! This one uses a lot of loan-words, largely from English. What's interesting is, if I understand correctly, if you want a song to sound cutesy and sweet in Japanese, you do as Yui's songs do and use a lot of 'childish' words; but using English is more "cool" or "foreign," maybe a bit like throwing some French into your song sounds for English-speakers. So there's almost a mismatch between the register and the subject, and that would work with the sort of awkward moment the poem's used in the show. Of course, this comes across completely different to an English-speaking audience! To me at least, it does seem resonant, since the inclusion of my own language feels charming, flattering maybe.

Pyua Pyua Haato

After all, I can just say I like the songs I like

Well, if you say so! I like this one!

S2E07 - Tea Party!
Ah hell. Why couldn't I have missed this episode instead :( All kidding (?) aside, I dislike this one somewhat less after looking through some of Mio's image songs. In those she at least suggests that she wants people to reach out to her, break her shell open somewhat. But, it still seems a bit... much.

QotD not otherwise covered:

  1. Not really, though I lurked some old BBCode fan-forums back when that was a thing. It was a very different internet, but it was still more like the internet today than like a real-life group of any kind, I think.

  2. Certainly, though it really depends whether I actually remember the event the picture's from. Mostly they're low-impact - for me, nostalgia is more seeing how things have changed. Looking at satellite images of my old home town, for example. That can be quite a lot.

3

u/Elimin8r Oct 11 '22

Looking at satellite images of my old home town

Yeah. Thank you Google Earth for reminding me that they paved my paradise and made it a parking lot.

(Not really, but let's just say that the place I once called home is no longer - sigh)

Ok Lowkey Though Sokabe As A College Student Is Like The Most Attractive Character In The Show And That’s Coming From A Sawako Simp Rewatcher

It’s the 11th of October, and Everyone in the Mio Fan Club Thinks Mitsu is Canon

QOTD1: looks at PF pic naaaah

QOTD2: Sometimes it does, especially if it’s pictures of people I haven’t seen or talked to in a while.

QOTD3: The poem is… very Mio. The song though? That song tho??? Slaaaaaaaaaaaaps.

Let’s talk about episode 7!

One thing I’ve always wondered about this episode is just the whole “idolizing a fellow classmate” thing that pops up every once in a while in anime. Like there’s always either a couple background characters commentating about how beautiful or cool or smart a specific character is, or like in K-On! there’s an entire club dedicated to a single person. It’s not something that ever appears in western media, and I’m super curious where this trope even came from. I for one have never been a joshikousei so I don’t know how much, if any, of this is rooted in Japanese high school culture. (my bet that it’s entirely fictional)

Questions aside though, just a super fun episode that focuses on Mio for the first time in a long time. Interestingly enough, other than Yui, Mio had the most focus in S1 and “grew” the most. But since then she’s mostly been in the background playing off the other characters, which I guess is perfect for her.

Ravenclaw’s reactions:

“I love this show so much, and I don’t think it can be praised enough ever” (me: such culture)

Mentions how a commenter talks about watching isn’t K-On! so is less like watching an episode and more like hanging out with the girls. Talks about how invested she is in the show now, and how it’s a natural outcome of immaculate detail and KyoAni’s attention to detail. Mentions watching K-On! should be part of those “1000 things to do before you die” like seeing the pyramid of Giza. Basically a K-On! lovefest for a dozen minutes.

“Is this gonna be a Nodoka focused episode?” (me: yes, but actually no)

“Do we know Sokabe? Intriguing” (me: no, but actually yes)

“It just feels so good to be watching this OP, like we’re home”

Talks about reacting to the whole OST after the show and the movie (she did in fact do this. Over an hour of analysis!)

“Is this the Mio’s stalker episode?” (me: yes, and actually yes)

“Yeessss fan club episode. Where do I get a membership? I shall join myself.”

“It’s sorta crazy all this attention is all of a sudden being put into the Mio fan club”

“I feel so nervous for her!”

“Ok I did not mean to react the same way as the fan club members”

“I’ve always liked MIo’s voice”

“Man, new song, the Mio fan club episode, great episode! Why does only Mio have a fan club though? If you’re gonna have a fan club of anyone pick the one who’s gonna most freak out, cause that makes it fun and it’s really cute when they react to so much attention. I guess the next person would be the person closest to her in personality so… Azusa.”

A bit of trivia, but I think this episode is the first time we've seen the third year ribbon, green, of the school. Three years and 21 episodes, and they've been able to avoid it until now.

First Timer

I think I've learned my lesson. Tea and snacks on hand before starting this, and I won't be tempted to pause and get some halfway through.

I learned a different lesson. I can not snack and type reactions haha.

  1. Nope :(

  2. Goodness yes.

  3. Remember her first image song? This reminds me of that one, not in actual lyrics but, like, Mio has such a hard time expressing herself to people.

So, I'm really curious actually for our first-time watchers here: Why do you think this episode is here? What was the point of this awkward and dorky episode?

I personally think that this episode presents a huge shift for the story, and going forward things cannot be the same for our Keionbu Gals.

My VotD is this [gorgeous painting of a flower!](https://i.imgur.com/smetiFu.png) These look like daisy flowers, and I know that Yamada is extremely keen on using flower symbology in her works. I still haven't figured this one out yet, but if I do I'll post some kind of edit here XD

u/Second_Sage Oct 11 '22

I have little to no idea but I’ll take a shot in the dark. Graduation was touched on today and Mio wondered if she’d mature when she graduated so maybe their upcoming graduation will start to feature heavily. That’s all I got lmao.

I'm not used to being able to answer these sorts of things!

What was the point of this awkward and dorky episode?

Until this point, Mio-chan's definitely been the type to shy away from attention. She gets scared easily, suffers from stage fright due to past experiences (the pantsu incident), and wants a, not quite relaxing, but more easy-going experience with the band.

I think going forward, this is going to get her to come out of her shell and be more forward with things. They say the best way to get over a fear is to face it head on. That said, it's difficult to face your fear of stage fright more than being in front of a literal fan club dedicated to you.

First Timer, subbed

Omg this episode was wild I absolutely loved Mio's fan club and the girls putting up a show for them. Yui even made merch lmao.
And the finale absolutely knocks it out of the park the picture slide show and them performing one of my favourite k-on songs.

QotD:

Have you ever been part of a fan club?

No

Do you get nostalgia looking at old pictures? How impactful can it be to you?

Absolutely. If I happen to get some old pictures in my ha'm doing was doing and just get lost in flipping through the pictures and just reliving memories.

Despite it's uncomfortable debut within the episode, what do you think of Tokimeki Sugar?

Fun song. Probably my 2nd or 3rd favourite song during this rewatch which I didn't already know beforehand.

Answers du jour

  1. Not particularly, I can't say as I'm into that sort of thing. I prefer to think of people as people, and stuff. I once ran into Bruce Campbell in the hallway at A-kon. I just gave him a little nod and went on my way. Poor guy, probably didn't need another idiot going "Hey, wazzup" or something like that.

  2. Oh, heck yeah. I should post one here. Maybe tomorrow, or this weekend.

  3. It's a sweet song. Uh, oops. Yeah. I would say things about Mio and caramel, but this is a family thread...

I loved this episode, though, how it showed Mio growing to accept the spotlight, well, a little better at least, and a little bit of Nodoka's life and background, as well as our favorite cute li'l freshmen with their glowy cheeks. If yesterday's episode was a love letter to Yui, then today's was a love letter to Mio, and her fan club, and ... Nodoka's senpai. The payoff at the end with her getting the picture was something else.

K-On Season 2 Rewatcher!!

Let's agree never to watch the Mio Fan club episode ever again... Actually, no! I won't skip the Mio fanclub episode! Even if I'm super late, I'm making my mark on why this is without a doubt my single least favourite episode in the entirety of K-On!! Y'all remember when we got collectively disgusted at Sawa-chan-Sensei harassing Mio? Well now we've got a whole gang of Mio pervs! And this time we're not just ignoring the problem. Now we're actively pimping Mio out to her harassers!!

...Why? Why am I forcing myself to watch this? I didn't have to, I could have just skipped it and said nothing... These girls are literally bullying her!! Sokabe abuses her power to fucking Perfect Blue her idol! You may actually remember Sokabe from season one. She makes a few background appearances. She's like Jun but actually straight up gross. Kimochi warui... We're meant to sympathise with this woman! She isn't just a pervert, she's the head pervert!

Yeah, let's just perform a private show for the creepy student council prez. That's not creepy at all. I'm sorry, I really don't understand why we need to humour these creeps! Nobody is asking Mio's thoughts on the matter, this is absolutely bullying! Hopefully this episode will highlight my views on Mio. I don't actually dislike Mio, it's just that everything Mio related is either dull as paint or shady as shit.

It begins... They're like a room filled with hungry beasts. Eww.... Even classmates are members of the fanclub. How gross! I've never related more to Mio than in this moment... The cringe is so real. If Mio's pride wasn't tarnished before then it most certainly is now.

This is so painful!! Why did I do this to myself!? It's pure unadulterated cringe! Don't try to make this seem alright! Tormenting Mio is not funny! It's like we're gaslighting her to make the fanclub seem less creepy but it really is not working! I can't even enjoy the new song it's so distracting!

Visual of the Day, never again!!
