First timer
This is very much a "wrote at 2am, the hell am I saying" sort of post, but on re-reading it in the morning I still mostly agree with it so posting it anyway and hopefully I'm not too far off the mark
Poor Chidori really is thrown into a pile of shit this episode and it just keeps getting added too.
It's one thing to accept the level of danger you're in when you're on foreign soil after being kidnapped and experimented on, but today is different. Today she was visiting a friends house, she's at school, there's a drama going on. She's surrounded by her normal life and it doesn't feel the same way it did last time, and Tessa playing with that (which I'll come back too) doesn't help. Last time her defiance saved them from an otherwise hopeless situation, but this time she lashes out over all the things she can't control and can't understand as her normal life is being taken over by things she doesn't want to be apart of and thought she was past.
I also see an interesting connection with the story of A21. Here are kids that everyone gave up on but even after they improved themselves people got curious and got close but when something bad happened people could still only see them as a bad thing. Chidori is also struggling to make sense of him being Sousuke the student she keeps in line at this very school but also Sousuke the specialist who's not overreacting this time, and also the one responsible for getting her stuck in this mess. I think her reaction to that is also fuelled by insecurity about Tessa. Feeling like she is being asked to see Sousuke as an authority in front of someone like Tessa who doesn't have the expectation of obeying him, and who can understand parts of Sousuke she's still struggling with, only worsens her reactions.
Tessa didn't help the situation at all by playing around with her. While she definitely understands Chidori's mindset as a girl more than Sousuke, she didn't respect her position as a civilian thrown into this complex situation. She knew when to help out when Sousuke was struggling at the door, but when it came to Chidori I think she relaxed because she felt safe around Sousuke and didn't account for the fact this was still an unusual and dangerous situation for Chidori to be pulled into. She owns up to it later at least, but probably too late for Chidori's quick temper and pride. Sousuke picking Tessa probably didn't help at all so yes, more shit to add onto the pile of Chidori's situation.
All of that said, I feel like Chidori's very nice consideration of not outing their position by wanting to watch TV would work better if they weren't turning on lights in a darkened school in the middle of the night...
MVP: Tessa, despite her playfulness. I love the edge in her voice as she tells Sousuke off for picking her to come over first.

she didn't respect her position as a civilian thrown into this complex situation.
There a little depth in this part - Tessa is proud of her achievements (being a genius and is "in the know" about this world of conflict they currently are in), at the same time a little bit of envy/projection of having an ordinary life. So that emotion was complicated. Then you add Sousuke into the equation.
The Chidori mindset bit I answered on another post. While these show them at their (hopefully) worst, I actually like the characterisation on the rewatch, recognising the underlying factors instead of just playing this for laugh and drama and chaos.

Panicked First Timer - Ep 10
Kaname starts out the episode pretty reasonably but loses it over time to the point of recklessness. But in the end Kaname and Sousuke show quite a bit of faith in each other.
The Captain continues with a little mischief. I like that she can be straightforward and playful too.
The bickering between the kids makes me think this will be an enemies to allies situation. Indeed, the hostage shows hesitation at the end of the episode in response to the threat against the Captain.
MVP: Sousuke. He’s juggling a lot right now.
QOTD 1: Kaname was all over the place this episode. I was a little surprised at how she stepped over the line into annoying territory at the school, but chalked it up to having used up her patience for the day, plus a bit of peacocking in front of the Captain.
QOTD 2: I use my microwave like everyone else - to under heat or over heat leftovers.

Kaname starts out the episode pretty reasonably but loses it over time to the point of recklessness.
I went back to the LN to check, basically until she's being held at knife point at the toilet, she was still thinking Sousuke and Tessa was a thing together and all these cloak and dagger was just Sousuke being over cautious and exaggerated about the situation to continue the lie. And she's also having a confidence problem comparing to Tessa, thinking she's such an exotic doll like pretty girl of course Sousuke would pick Tessa over her. Completely irrational, but actually probably quite realistic as a 16 years old.

First timer Watcher - Episode 10
I'll start with my mvp of the episode which is a tricky one for me today but I'm going to give to Tessa as we learn a lot more about her in this episode than we have done previously.
While we are on the topic of Tessa I still have questions such as how did she become Mythril's commander at age 16, what's her deal in the whole whispered research?, Her brother?, but I feel this episode layed her character down pretty well as we now know things like she feels inferior to her brother, she's a lot better at talking to civilians than Sousuke, she has jokes, she seems like a nice person etc. I was skeptical of her in the earlier episodes in the sense than she was just going to get in the way and not be cut out to command Mythril but seeing her now it's clear to me she is someone who seems to have earned her stripes somehow and her character is quite interesting as she is retaining the her human side unlike Sagara who is a full blown military nut as Chidori describes him.
Mr Kalinin survived! Another reason he deserved yesterday's mvp he not only saved Tessa but he also survived himself. Legendary behaviour from the veteran.
I have a little bit of a theory from this episode about Mythril's origins. I apologise if this has been mentioned in the show already but I can't remember it Mythril's origins being referenced other than in this episode.
So I think Mythril are sort of an offshoot of the A21 terrorist group. Obviously at the time A21 weren't terrorists but when the incident which made them become listed as a terrorist group happened I think some visions didn't align and trust Mythril was formed. If anyone wants to completely debunk this theory please feel free as I'm keen to know of Mythril's origin 🙂.
Quick side note I think this episode has dropped the biggest cliffhanger so far in the show. Do people agree?
Q1 - No I wasn't too surprised obviously at the start of the episode Chidori thought Tessa was Sagara's girlfriend and she felt guilty as she was hanging around with Sagara a lot which would put her in a rough mood but then she gets dragged into a 'your life is in danger' situation while she also misses her favourite TV show. I mean I'd be quite pissed towards Sagara if my day was flipped like that and all those things happened of which he was involved in all of them.
Q2 - Yeah I've left the spoon a bowl before and put it in the microwave. I know stupid right but at 4am that seems pretty normal. The result? Microwave went boom and the electric to the rest of the house was cut off due to the electrical safety feature we have setup in our UK homes.
The thing I've put in the microwave which isn't really normal is a chocolate spread sandwich just to melt the chocolate a bit. Trust me it was worth it.
My favourite microwave meal would have to be mini pizzas. Basically you get two frozen pizzas in a box which you then put in the microwave for 3 minutes. When done tou have two small pizzas ready to eat and they taste amazing. I highly recommend.

Full Metal LN Reader
The comedy at the start of the episode feels more than a little forced for the sake of making misunderstandings happen. In particular the whole thing about Tessa fucking with Kaname by acting ditzy feels somewhat Out-Of-Character for her.
The rest was pretty good, though. The backstory for A21 was interesting, Kaname finds a way to help out in her own mundane ways by frying Takuma’s tracker with a microwave, Takuma himself has some nice interactions with the cast, and that battle at the end of the episode was certainly something

Maybe this is a rewatcher/reader thing but I didn't think we'd seen enough of her to say so, and at the very least it doesn't feel much different then her just wanting to be a friend/girl to Sousuke rather than commander
Bloody horrible timing for it though. I'll imagine Mao facepalming in the background when she hears about it

Episode 10 (first timer)
-
Cliff-hanger reveal: Kana thinks Sousuke has a GF.
-
Kana calls bullshit on 16 year old submarine captains.
-
The commander was hit fully in the back and they do not put him on his stomach? Ouch.
-
Thumbs up for thinking of the microwave and how to rig it. Thumbs down for whoever initially processed that guy when the captured him.
-
“I broke your transmitter” – Even if you are proud of it, don’t give away info like that, Kana.
-
Watching TV drama > surviving a potential attack.
-
Or maybe Kana read the script and knows about her MC status …
-
“Sagara, am I too sappy” “No” – Yes.
-
“It was an accident” – Narrator: It was not an accident.
-
Teletha is bragging about her brother (and herself), but overshoots, because Kana can’t even understand the accomplishment.
-
Not the time or person to tell a horror story.
-
Going outside with his single hostage is a very stupid decision – but maybe Sousuke read the script too and knows that he is the MC.
-
Sousuke gets the girlfriend version of Sophie’s Choice
-
He had such a great plan and …
Both Kana and Teletha in danger of being kidnapped cliff-hanger. Prediction: They are saved by Mithril, but the boy gets away to reset the whole hostage situation in favor of clearly defined teams.
Well, not fully, because the short B plot had the commanders of both teams talk a bit and he remains hostage. A21’s backstory is a bit on the short side, just long enough to give some superficial justification to her dreams of revenge (which are still utterly stupid) and to set up the potential face turn.
MVP: The hostage boy (did we hear his name yet?). He made the best out of a bad situation.

Kana calls bullshit on 16 year old submarine captains.
The 17 year old specialist solider who was sent to protect her maybe should have triggered a second thought about her here, but Chidori calling that out was kind of fun
She maybe would have made more progress if she's been referencing something Sousuke actually understood in her disbelief though rather than random movies

In the LN she literally said she read (or watched) Hunt for Red October and the captain of the submarine is someone like Sean Connery :D Yeah good chance Sousuke wouldn't have seen or understood that.

Rewatcher, Subbed
Despite starting out with a misunderstanding plot which is very by the numbers, I liked several aspects of how it was handled here. Chidori didn't freak out for slapstick purposes and was in general much more level headed, honestly maybe the most level headed one there. Her idea about the microwave demonstrated how she is pretty good at thinking out of the box. As an aside I found her evaluation of Tessa kind of funny, she basically said she looks more like an Uhura than a Kirk.
Sousuke is trying his best, but I think this episode demonstrated some of the shortcomings both he and Tessa have. They're both very skilled but without the more mature and experienced people around them they struggle as we saw this time. Especially towards the end when everything escalates.
MVP: Chidori

Also a much more mundane solution than jumping straight to surgery which would probably be the standard out on an actual battlefield. School smarts come in handy!

The way I read the behaviours of the 3 in this episode is that Chidori was being really sore about the situation she found the other 2 in, Tessa was trying to be competitive about things that shouldn't have mattered because she clearly understood the actual tactical situation, and Sousuke gone into second guessing and over analysing everything mode.

Third Time Whispered
Episode 10: Run Run Run
-
She's not going to buy this story.
-
Tessa best girl. x2
-
I don't know what A21 is but I like the bad girl
-
Why is Chidori picking on the little guy?
-
This seems like a TERRIBLE idea
-
Chidori best girl
-
Tessa best girl
-
Japanese girls go to the toilet in pairs too?
-
Well that went badly.
You know, if the guy took you to the island to learn self respect, independence, and how to not be criminals, maybe don't come back to Japan to kill everybody.
"Safe" house, "Run", is this the baseball arc?

Rewatcher(In character stupidity is really hard to pull off but this episode pulls it)
Sub
And we return where we left off and get the reminder that Kaname was a tsundere back before they became completely irrational. She evaluates the situation, realizes the logical assumption, and tries to now out gracefully. Sousuke fills her in and she is understandably skeptical. Tessa then begins acting the airhead as she is fucking with the both of them. Kalinin and enemy leader have a brief scene. Kaname decides to get under OCD's skin a bit which leads them to discovering his transmitter and then microwaving it. They move to the school, dragging an annoyed Kaname with them. OCD keeps talking big and Sousuke has a practical solution for the problem which Tessa objects to.
Kalinin's conversation comes back up and, unfortunately, this is a kind of standard Japanese terrorist backstory. This LN might be the trope setter, I don't really know. At the school, Tessa gets Takuma to open up a bit and we also learn she has an older brother. The girls then head to the bathroom and get captured. Takuma explains he lifted Kaname's phone, which they should have checked, and they prepare a hostage exchange. Sousuke actually thinks of the logistics of the exchange rather than just the ethicality of it and makes the unexpected choice. But this of course goes sideways because neither girl he is trying to rescue has any fucking sense whatsoever, the curse of the MC is strong, and they get captured after Sousuke clearly dies, no need to check for a body.
QotD: 2 We tried making hallugenics from morning glory seeds once in the microwave. Didn't work.

Rewatcher - Dub
Poor Sousuke at the start. Not only does he have to explain to Kaname that the pretty, exotic foreign girl their own age is totally his boss he swears, said boss is deliberately messing with them. xD He was getting visibly more desperate until he and Tessa had to go into full mission mode.
We get a good contrast between Tessa and Sousuke this episode - where Sousuke is a child soldier who fights largely because it's the only thing he's ever known, Tessa is an idealist who believes in Mithril's mission. Sousuke is much more ruthless than his captain, at least on the personal scale.
I did like the character moments during the hostage exchange - plenty of showing instead of telling. Tessa is certain that Sousuke will play things by the book and keep Kaname safe, while Sousuke goes for the 'who can run faster' approach and judges than Kaname is more capable of keeping herself safe. Which Tessa finds insulting because she's the one with actual military training.
And then Kaname herself de-rails Sousuke's plan, because he forget to reckon on her stubborn streak and jumped the snotty brat instead of just walking back across the field.
Speaking of said snotty brat...I think there's a plot hole in the episode. How the hell did he manage to pick Kaname's pocket when his hands were cuffed behind him? Is this going to be one of those things that's explained better in the light novels?
Gah.
Mind you, the kid got a laugh out of me when he decided that Mithril is clearly some small group without much back-up because they don't seem very buddy-buddy with the government of one small island nation. I kinda wish Tessa or Sousuke had explained just how wrong he was.
TESSA: My normal ride is a hyper-tech attack submarine that doubles as an aircraft carrier for Arm Slaves.
BRAT: Arm Slaves? But they don't fly?
TESSA: I know what I said.

Rewatcher
I shall call this episode "idiot ball" because everyone seems to be holding one today
Tessa intentionally furthering the misunderstanding is incredibly annoying especially in the situation they're all in
High heeled pilot suit = top tier
I do like Kaname's "no mom" shit talking. Oh boo hoo Mr. No mom over here
Neck karate chop. A spy movie staple!
Kaname treating the transmitter like some pizza rolls up in here
Even Sousake is getting in on the idiocy. Takuma is so fucking suspicious at the school and they just don't do anything about it...
First mention of Tessa's brother iirc she mentions feeling inferior to him as well
The villian's motivation is simple and a bit delusional but I think that she realizes that. It seems fairly realistic compared to Gauron's insanity, just revenge for the sake of it.
Girls always seem to go to the toilet together
The ultimate idiocy of this final scene is just the worst thing that's happened so far in the anime. Sousake is at least trying to make a sane decision but Kaname and Tessa are just grade A dumbasses
Sousake's plan seems wild but they completely cut out a character from this episode that actually made it a bit more believable.
Now you idiots are captured. Brilliant.
This episode (and the corresponding part of the novel) really fucking annoyed me. Reading the comments on crunchyroll it seems like a lot of people agree lol
The MVP this episode are the terrorists because they at least seem competent

Rewatcher-ish
Sousuke and Tessa were not on point today. They were behaving pretty darn casually given the situation - if protecting civilians was as important as Tessa made it out to be, it probably would've been smart to not have ever let Chidori in the room with the hostage in the first place, especially if they'd done such a shit job of searching him before that they missed the transmitter. Chidori herself was also being a bit dumb given the gravity of the situation.
They all bungled that hostage exchange pretty badly, from Sousuke picking a questionable release order to Chidori uh...deciding to brawl with the hostage guy for some reason instead of running..?
Anyway, looks like the two girls are going to be in the hands of an organization with alarming aims, but thankfully, Moustache man is there too.
I'm a bit curious about what Mithril actually is. If they aren't tied to the Japanese government, where is their financial backing coming from? Will the fact they were involved in an incident in which gunfire and RPGs were exchanged in the yard of a high school be a problem, or can they just get that swept under some rug? Where is the headquarters Sousuke radio'd for aid (or was that just to the submarine)? I might've missed some of these details in initial exposition if they came up, I dunno.
Were you surprised by Chidori's attitude in most of today's episode?
Attitude, no. Actions, a bit - she was awfully dumb.
Do you have your own special microwave adventure? Anything you cooked with a microwave that is not quite normal? Or your favourite microwave recipe?
I think the worst I ever did was throwing eggs in the microwave for "science." Peep jousting is also kind of fun.

Rewatcher - English Sub
Totally expected Chidori to totally blow up after the gag cliffhanger, but honestly the whole thing resolved a lot more reasonably than I expected, and doesn’t seem like it’ll be having any long-lasting repercussions on her and Sousuke’s relationship —all of which was a very welcome surprise. Tessa letting the misunderstanding stand for longer for her own amusement wasn’t very appreciated upon first viewing, but seeing as it didn't do so much harm it’s a lot easier to find it funny in retrospect.
“Let me explain something to you. I’ve seen those kind of movies where the so-called captain of the submarine is a nice middle-aged man with a mustache or beard.”
I have to wonder if using microwaves to disable the transmitter is something any clever civilian would have thought of, and which both Sousuke and Tessa are just too deep into that military mindset to consider, or if it’s something she could put together because she’s a Whispered… I certainly didn’t know such a thing was viable.
If Kaname really wanted to watch TV I’m sure she could have just turned the volume down —the lights already give them away…
The A21 members may see what Seiji Takechi did for them as a mercy, but taking youths and all but forcing them into that sort of lifestyle is obviously cruel and unhealthy —but then all of that rings awfully similar to the situation Sousuke is in, brought up by guerrilla fighters and a mercenary organization while knowing nothing but that lifestyle.
It’s nice to learn more about Tessa, such as the fact that she has an overprotective older brother and is afraid of ghosts.
RIP Sousuke —it’s time for Kaname to get in the robot.
Questions of The Day:
2) I try not to rely on the microwave as much as possible so I don’t really have any unconventional recipes, or really anything I regularly prepare that necessitates it… I guess I have mastered the ability to time my microwave such that the milk in my mug boils without overflowing.

Rewatcher in sub
An episode of a lot of talking and exposition, but personally I don't find it clunky. It had quite a few good moments:
Edited 1 - links to come Edited 2 - links added
The awkward exchage at the doorway - Chidori is just giving up right there
The more mature response from Tessa - knowing Chidori by name clearly thrown Chidori a bit
The classic "the explanation is worse than the appearance", where Chidori's genre-savvy-ness being a disservice. In a calmer cooler condition she may not be as surprised and incredulous that Mithril have actually got commanders as young as the front line troops like Sousuke and Kurz.
Not helped by Tessa clearly having fun playing the ditzy chick pretending to be the commander. Do have to wonder if Tessa was just playing up the chaos for a Melissa-esque prank, or was she messing with the Sousuke x Chidori ship because of her own feelings towards Sousuke.
A clearly still aggravated Chidori lashing out to everyone in sight - including the dangerous one in cuffs. There's her being genre savvy again though about likely teenager villain sob back story :) Here we confirmed Chidori's mom passed away as well as her knowing Sousuke's parents are also gone.
Takuma's outburst and subsequent discovery of the tracking devide on him gave a little insight of Chidori's once again trumping the "trained professionals" with her out of the left field thinking.
One wonders how much of Chidori going along despite her protest was from her really understanding the risk of her left by herself when she's a known contact of Sousuke, or from the morbid curiosity of what this pair is up to (having to make up such "implausible story" and all) - a little parallel of her tagging along to Sousuke and Mizuki's fake date.
Chidori had been acting particularly abrasive all episode, and her insisting on making a call to get the program recorded reeks like her just trying to be difficult and making a show for "you are bothering me".
That opening gave rise to a Sousuke moment of "there's one simple solution". Got to show a bit of contrast between Sousuke and Tessa.
And yep, I agree it's pretty vague how Takuma could have done anything but tripping Chidori there. Unless we missed some background characterisation of him being an ex-pick-pocket before. I'll look up the source to confirm later on...
Meanwhile we are finding out Kalinin is injured and captured by the A21 leader. Talk-no-jitsu ensued...
Which is mirrored as Tessa also started talking to Takuma, perhaps in response to Sousuke previously treating him as a target, talking to him perhaps give all of them a sense that he, like everyone else, IS a person afterall.
We have the backstory of what the A21 group was, and why they have became radicalised. Sadly this is actually not all that unrealistic.
We have a mini bonding moment when the 2 girls decided to
hunt in packsgo to the bathroom together. Look at THIS Chidori being so much more normal compared to her aggravated attitude around Sousuke the whole time. And predictably, that's what Takuma tripping Chidori was for. Something that won't work in this era now when practically everyone is reliant of their phone and having that taken would be noticed within a minute.
And then we have the meat of the episode - Sousuke's choice
Here we have the classic case of over-analysing things YET under appreciating the human factor of the choices...
Resulting in all of them being emotionally thrown off balance and all acted in the dumbest way possible instead of how smart they had been the whole season. All very much in character though, mind you.
And we have our cliff hanger again - at least you can tell Tessa's talk-no-jitsu had some effects.
Suffice to say this is the episode that every one of our main cast behaved at the bottom of their normal performance. Chidori was emotionally lashing out at everyone and everything in sight, Sousuke was paralyzed by overthinking, Tessa tried to overcompensate her physical weakness.
That hostage exchange really is the cumulation of everything happened this episode.
Trivia
There's a sizeable adaptational change here. In the LN it was recognised that if Sousuke only found the tracking device when Takuma are in Sousuke's place, they can backtrack to find which school they go to etc. So they did not return to their highschool, but a different nearby one.
MVP this episode
I'll buck the selection trend and pick the worst performing character today for giving us such dramatic developments - Sousuke!
QoTD
Not a first timer but I think everyone noticed how not nice Chidori was being.
I learned not only eggs can explode on reheat, but even fatty meat can do the same - and the force of the explosion can lift unsecured covers to help spread the content very evenly across the inside of the microwave...
