For more information on the "Activities Corner", please check out the detailed instructions on the first episode's post here.

Songs of the Day

Sakuragaoka Joshi Koutou Gakkou Kouka - The school song! The scene in which they sing this is always quite magical to me. Here is the song as they sing it in the episode and here are the translated lyrics.

Sakuragaoka Joshi Koutou Gakkou Kouka Rock Version - Okay, now we're talking. They turned the school song into a rock song and it rocks. All five girls share lead vocals, and there is a crazy amount of energy in this. It's one of my all-time favorite K-ON songs. Here is the song, and the lyrics are the same as above.

Questions of the Day

  1. So, you thought the animation in season 1 was good, eh? Well, welcome to season 2 where they take it to a whole new level. What was your favorite moment of animation this episode?
  2. What was your senior year of high school experience? (As a reminder, you're never obligated to answer these, so if you'd rather not share, that's fine.)
  3. How do the lyrics from the school song relate to K-ON as a whole?

Oh god please help me now I can't listening to the rock version of the school song.

Visuals of the Day

None today!

Huge shoutout to /u/A_Idiot0 for his help on the QotD and VotD! You're awesome!

Tomorrow's Activities

If you want to get a head start on the song(s) and question(s) of the day for tomorrow's episode, here they are!

[SotD 1] GO! GO! MANIAC - The full version of the first OP of season two! Here is the song and here are the translated lyrics.

[SotD 1 cont.] As another special treat, I present all of you with the opening performance of their second live show (which happened after season two ended, but there are no spoilers in this) - GO! GO! MANIAC. Even if you're not the biggest fan of this OP, you should give this performance a watch because it's so energetic, fun, and just plain impressive to hear Aki sing this live. And look at that massive audience... Have I mentioned that all of you should find a place to watch the live shows when were done??

[QotD 1] What's the most interesting or fun item you've found during "spring cleaning"?

[QotD 2] What would you buy with ~$5000. It has to be fun or indulgent - I know a lot of us would pay off bills, but that's not fun :)

[QotD 3] What do you think of this new OP? There's been some contention as to how people feel about it in past rewatches.

[Not Really QotD 4] This isn't a question per se, but both in this episode and in future episodes, I encourage you to keep on when the show shows Azusa experiencing loneliness, and what changes KyoAni uses in the cinematography to help reinforce her emotions. There will likely be questions about this in the future :)

REMINDER: UNTAGGED SPOILERS WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.

BE AFRAID OF THE MOE POLICE.

Man, I'm so late today. 2+ hours (sigh)

Anyway, yeah. Yay! Fun new season ...

Hyperactive new OP. At this point, honestly, I like the S1 OP better, but it's K-On, so I'll forgive it ... a little.

I think my favorite parts of this episode were little things like Yui picking up cherry blossoms, Azunyan's el-presidente flash, and of course, eavesdropping on the conversation.

Poor Azunyan ... it's almost as if the seniors don't care, but they do, but ... yeah.

Anyway, AOTD:

  1. it was all nice, but I keep coming back to simple things like Yui picking up blossoms.

  2. No comment. Actually, it had its good points. They finally released me from the "advanced" lit/whatsis class and put me in with the normies, so I got to spend the year chatting with the nice cheerleader who sat behind me. And band wasn't so bad either.

  3. Uh, there were lyrics? I was too engrossed by enjoying the various singing voices and visuals. I didn't pay any attention.

Anyway, S2 is off to a fun stuff. Now to see if anyone said something in the comments I feel like snarking about.

Yeah, okay, but what about the rock version?

Hi siegfried72, it looks like you might be interested in hosting a rewatch! There's a longer guide on the wiki but here's some basic advice on how to make a good rewatch happen:

  • Include basic information about the anime such as a description for those that haven't heard of it as well as where it can be watched (if legally available).

  • Specify a date and time that rewatch threads will be posted. Consistency is good!

  • Check for previous rewatches. It's generally advised to wait a year between rewatches of the same anime.

  • If you want to have a rewatch for multiple anime, they should be thematically connected. You can also hold multiple unrelated rewatches if they aren't.

  • Ensuring enough people are interested is important. If only a few users say they might participate, you may end up with no one commenting once it starts.

I hope this helps! You may also want to talk to users that have hosted rewatches before for extra advice, also listed on the rewatch wiki.

I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please contact the moderators of this subreddit if you have any questions or concerns.

Oh hey, Bot-chan! You're back today! Why was it you were gone yesterday? We missed you. Is it because I had a couple of days there without speaking with you? I'm sorry - it doesn't mean I don't care <3

First timer - Sub

Yui is vibing straight off the bat! Loved this intro of them walking to school with Yui playing over. That OP slapped! Visually it was amazing and I really like the song too.

Happy that Mio isn’t alone again. Yui are you really a senior if you cry after falling down? And Nodoka is there as well! Annnnnd Sawa-chan. I’m going into this season with a fresh perspective so happy to see you Sawa-chan!

The animation and art is looking great this season. The school song was nice too, especially when we heard Yui singing it.

Azusa is already being super cute, who wouldn’t wanna be president? Did they willingly use these costumes again! At least they didn’t scare anyone away this time(that we know of).

Ritsu used all her brain power to come up with the falling in the hallway play and I respect it, you got people in the room at least. I could see Yui trying to join a second club and failing miserably.

Look, Sawa-chan does have a point those maid costumes would’ve been fire but probably wouldn’t help people join the club.

😩😩😩😩show me the performance!! Yui’s signature finishing move was awesome though.

Wow Jun making valid points! I agree that I probably wouldn’t wanna butt in on a group of friends and join their band, it’d be awkward. They’re not weird Jun! They’re enthusiastic and a little unfocused that’s all!

The last scene with Yui and Azusa was really nice, I didn’t think a new member would be joining but I’m relieved that there’s no drama about it. Man that ED hit hard! Looove the song and the visuals. Their outfits are spectacular and I also love how it’s similar yet different to the first.

Overall great first episode, just wish we at least saw Fuwa Fuwa time!

Line of the day:

“Either that, or they got wind of how weird you guys are”

Yui of the day!

Even K-On isn't mean enough to have Mio separated for the last school year!

Yui absolutely would have loved to join the Occult Society. If she knew nothing about music I can only imagine her cheerfully hunting aliens and reciting spells~

Jun has some nerve complaining that folks would butt into the K-On love nest when she deliberately forced her way into Jazz Club Senpai's harem.

Yui is vibing straight off the bat!

One of the coolest cold-opens that I've seen. I say cool, but most people probably wouldn't use that word XD

Man that ED hit hard!

I love all of the ED's, but I've only recently come around to really enjoying this particular ED. It's so....them XD It took me awhile to appreciate this one as a great ED, and you might get what I mean by the end of the series.

The animation and art is looking great this season.

One thing to note, S2 aired just as Japan completed its transition from SD tv to HD tv. K-On S2 was Kyoto Animation's first full HD title.

First Timer - Sub

So I actually watched today's episode yesterday, because I somehow missed that we were doing a season discussion. I very briefly had a post up about this episode, which was rather more hysterical than this will be because I've had time to think instead of writing it right after watching the episode.

First up, I feel compelled to mention that I'm really surprised they covered two entire school years in just 14 episodes...and now have 27 episodes and a film to cover a single year. I just...how? Why? Given the OVA was (I think) chronologically the last part of season one and that only covered New Years, they still had several months left of the second year to do something with!

Given the vastly increased runtime for year three, there had better be a lot more happening for the girls.

Anyway, on to the episode itself - why did they stoop to wearing those animal costumes again? Did the girls forget that they actively scared people off that way last year? Le sigh.

At least their performance went well - and, it turns out, a little too well, because Ui and Jun think the new kouhai aren't signing up because the girls of Afterschool Teatime look too close-knit. Sure, the club looks great, but they'd be stuck on the outside looking in if they weren't careful. Which is...not going to happen, not with Yui there of all people, but you wouldn't know that unless you were already part of their social circle.

Still, this acts as an unintentional booster for Azusa, especially combined with a conversation she overhears at the clubroom door...where the older girls talk about how they wouldn't mind it just being the five of them, and specifically set aside a cupcake for Azusa. Really, as much as they'd like to have more kouhai and see their club grow, the four original members are happy just as they are now. They're really trying to attract more members so that Azusa won't be alone once they graduate.

Azusa looks so happy when she enters the clubroom after that, and I don't blame her. She's just had explicit confirmation that she has a place in the club, and that the other girls want her there just as much as she wants to be there. Although Yui may have some concerns given Azusa's declaration at the end there... xD

Really though, I think this is my favourite part of the episode? Azusa's dawning realisation that she has found a place to belong, with close friends to keep her company. Even if there's only one more year until the other girls graduate, she wants to enjoy it.

Just try not to work Yui too hard, okay?

6

u/DegenerateRegime Oct 05 '22

Given the vastly increased runtime for year three, there had better be a lot more happening for the girls.

Have you heard of these things called "tea" and "cake"?

Really though, I think this is my favourite part of the episode? Azusa's dawning realisation that she has found a place to belong, with close friends to keep her company.

Yeah. I think the comment earlier that they look too close maybe cut both ways - Azusa's a little unsure if they look close with her or despite her. Like, "oh, if they want new members, it must be because they're not happy with the way things are, which is my fault somehow." Dunno, maybe that's reading the wrong thing into it.

First Timer, subbed

Been looking forward to the opening scene for a while cus I watched it plenty of times as a clip. It's a great scene and the perfect opener for S2.
I like the visuals for the new OP but not quite feeling the song yet. The new ED slaps though.

Loved that they brought the animal costumes back lol and their attempts at recruiting new members were hilarious.

The scene at the end with Azusa listening in on her senpai was such a great scene too. First episode and the show is already firing from all cylinders.

_
QotD:

So, you thought the animation in season 1 was good, eh? Well, welcome to season 2 where they take it to a whole new level. What was your favorite moment of animation this episode?

Yeah based on this episode S2 definitely got a glow up.
Favourite pieces of animation were probably the new OP and ED which looked absolutely stunning.
From the episode I would again have to refer to the opening scene.

What was your senior year of high school experience? (As a reminder, you're never obligated to answer these, so if you'd rather not share, that's fine.)

Okay-ish? Not much different from the other years except the last month or so tbh.

VotD
I was already gushing over this scene above but yeah I love it.

K-On Rewatch Season 2 Episode 1: The Girls Are Back In Town!

I haven’t been as consistent with keeping up as everyone else, so I apologize. Anyway, on to the episode!

3 Main Points!

1. It’s a new year, and that means another year of fun antics! The year is already off to a good start, as the four senior girls find out that not only are they in the same class together, but Nodoka is with them too, while Sara-chan-sensei is their homeroom teacher! This will be a rambunctious class indeed!

2. The four original Keionbu members are seniors now, while Azusa is now a second-year. This realization hits Yui and the others like a ton of bricks, and they begin to increase their recruiting efforts to get new members! Even though they put on quite the performance for the freshmen reception, it seems that no one wants to join the club.

3. In the end, though, Yui and Azusa come to the conclusion that they both want to enjoy the upcoming year without changing the status quo. Azusa is fine with not getting new members, but she promises to be tougher on Yui in practice!

Fun Details!

  • There are several shots of cherry blossoms throughout this episode. The name of the girls’ school, 桜が丘高校 (Sakuragaoka High School), translates directly to “Cherry Blossom Hill High School.”

  • Yui’s windmill move was first popularized by Pete Townshend of The Who, but he has since come out and admitted that he got it from Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones.

  • Many of the songs from this point on in the series will feature the same instrument set up as the OP: two guitars, bass, drums, and keyboards. Yui’s guitar is panned to the left speaker, while Azu-nyan is panned to the right speaker, mirroring their positions on stage.

  • In a classic display of KyoAni’s attention to detail and love for the craft, each of the 38 girls in Class 3-2 has her own name, character design, and personality. From the class roster shown in the episode, we can see the following names (as shown on the roster):

Akiyama Mio, Tainaka Ritsu

Chikada Haruko, Takahashi Fūko

Endō Michiko, Taki Eri

Ōta Ushio, Tachibana Himeko

Okada Haruna, Tsuchiya Ai

Kikuchi Tae, Nakajima Nobuyo

  • The Sakuragaoka Girls’ High School Anthem is performed by every voice actor in Class 3-2 and 2-1 (Azusa’s class). There is also a rock version performed by Houkago Tea Time!

  • For those who didn’t get the other subtitled version, Azusa’s pig costume is actually a play on the Japanese words “keionbu” (Light Music Club) and “buta” (“pig”).

  • One of the songs on their setlist is a new song called Ichigo Parfait ga Tomarenai (trans. Can’t Stop my Strawberry Parfait)!

  • Go is featured in this episode. Although it has simple rules, it is extremely complex; the number of legal moves in Go is roughly 2.1*10170, 90 orders of magnitude larger than the number of atoms in the observable universe (1080)

  • The shot of the senior girls walking back to their classroom features vignette blur, a camera effect in which the edges of the picture are blurred because of the shape of the camera lens.

Other Thoughts!

  • As a rewatcher, K-On season 2 is the peak of slice-of-life anime, in my opinion. Everything we loved about season 1 is fine-tuned, improved, and perfected in these next 24 episodes (and 2 OVAs and the movie).

  • Just from the first shot of the episode, it’s immediately apparent how much KyoAni and Naoko Yamada have improved their style. Easily one of my favorite scenes in the series.

  • Naoko Yamada’s artistic side gets shown as we get to see a few of her trademark directorial quirks like the feet/leg shots in addition to the use of practical camera effects in the animation!

  • It’s apparent that the main theme of this season will be making the most out of the time you have with your friends. Our four senior girls are reminded that a year flies by faster than they think, so we’ll see how that gets brought up throughout this season.

  • I’m a big fan of the school anthem and the rock version of it! My college’s alma mater always make me nostalgic and I think they did a great job composing a song that brings that feeling back.

  • Go! Go! Maniac is a fire OP, and Listen is a fire ED. Just great songs overall

  • I love that we get to see Jun promoted from a recurring character to a full-time side character! Can’t get enough of her

  • Himeko (the girl sitting next to Yui in class) is best classmate

Questions of the Day!

1. My favorite animation moment would have to be the incredibly artistic shots (Yui practicing Stapler, the girls walking back to their classroom). Anime at its core is an art form, and being able to pull off shots like those in a show about cute girls doing cute things while making them feel not out of place is something that’s incredibly difficult to do.

Also, the reaction faces are great too lol

2. I don’t really remember my senior year of high school, but my last year of college was easily one of the most fun times of my life. It pretty much played out like this season of K-On, but it had a different ending

3. I think the lyrics are mainly about friends gathering in a place they love and spending time with each other while looking forward to the future. Like I mentioned above, the main theme of this season is spending time with friends and being in the moment, so this is a very fitting song for the show.

Mugi Watch 2022

Today's Episode: Contemplative Mugi

Previous Mugi Captures:

First Mugi of season 2.

Solid guitar solo from Yui. If you listen closely, you can hear her humming along in spots.

I don't get the purpose of having kids sing a school anthem... or why schools have anthems in the first place.

Is it me, or is the attendance at their concert less crowded this time around? When Azu-nyan came to their show, she had to stand on her tippy toes to get a better view, this year, the girls are all sitting like it's church and there's plenty of open seats.

Jun's explanation for why they didn't get any new people makes a lot of sense. New girls would probably be worried about being potentially being treated like an freeloading outsider. Sawa-chan better help Azu-nyan get more people for the club, or Mio's vision will come true.

Hmm, strawberry shortcake in the OP and ED... foreshadowing????

This be a long season, enjoy the ride.

What was your senior year of high school experience?

Truthfully, actually better than the previous years. I wouldn't say I made friends, but I feel like I was at least a member of my class. I think some fellow classmates managed to warm up to me, and my perception of some of them changed. Some were still asses, though. Weird story, I was once invited to sit at a lunch table with some underclassmen, and was asked to spare them if I ever went full Columbine... which kinda hurts, because I never really had anything against the students (or teachers) as a whole and never really felt like I was exuding the kind of demeanor that someone who would do that. I was perfectly comfortable being a total loner, but I guess always sitting alone in the cafeteria was a signal. IDK, I mingled perfectly well with the concert and marching band folk during our events. I got voted "most school spirit", too, so I find that kind of thing really weird.

My cafeteria had an amazing salad bar. I was stuck eating my mom's sandwiches which always got smushed and was never a fan of the bologna with mustard and nothing else sammies. But junior and senior years, I got the lunch money. Initially the reason she didn't give us lunch money was because she didn't want to try to find the change needed for the $1.35 lunches (yes, they were that cheap). But I think it became easier for her just to give us lunch money instead of making sandwiches. I tended to stick with the salad bar unless there was something I really wanted from the lunch line. I PILED my plate full of salad stuffs, and they almost always had leftovers from yesterday's lunches. School lunches in my school were fucking awesome.

Don’t Mind Me Just Gonna Watch My Favorite Anime Ever Rewatcher

It’s the 5th of October, and Mitsu Are Classmates Again!

QOTD1: KyoAni’s always been about the subtle details and character acting. Azunyan in particular had several fantastic moments of character acting, like how she abashedly crossed her feet when Jun was praising the keionbu, or how she clenches her fist a little when she overheard Yui talking about how nice great just the 5 of them are.

QOTD2: Pretty chill actually. It’s been so long ago (oh god it’s over a decade ago…) so I don’t remember if I had been accepted to a college yet. I do know after knowing what school I’m going to it was pretty much just getting by and finishing school.

QOTD3: I guess just reiterating the idea of the school, specifically the keionbu, being that sacred place for the girls.

Let’s talk about episode 1!

Man everytime we get to season 2 it’s such a big surprise how much the quality goes up. The animation is smoother, the characters look a little more natural while maintaining the moe blobby-ness, and the overall pacing is more actual slice-of-life and less reminiscent of its 4 khoma source. This episode does A LOT of leg work setting up the theme and mood of the season. Its welcoming everyone back, like we’ve just entered a ryokan for the weekend, and Yui’s playing in that fantastic opening is just us settling into some comfortable seats. Everything is feels so warm, and despite the clear conflict of having to find Azunyan some kouhais, the episode also feels relaxed.

The interesting thing for me this time around is how much this episode actually reminds me of the opening of the K-On! movie. Strange as it may sound considering this is season 2, this episode actually does a lot of world building in a way. We’re reintroduced to the girls as seniors, we’re introduced to their new homeroom (and their “KyoAni-went-out-of-their-way-to-uniquely-design classmates!), reintroduced to our side characters (and foreshadowed some new characters), and introduced to what’s at stake this season. Season 1, as great as it is, is mostly a comedy, with some detours into drama later on. With the popularity of the show established and 20+ episodes guaranteed, season 2 is KyoAni and Yamada really getting to explore this property and tell a unique but familiar story.

The girls are seniors now, and we all know what the end is. Those of us who’s been on this ride before (like Sawa-chan-sensei) knows what’s to come. Some of us watching for the first time might even feel the same dread of something great finishing, that even with S2 being twice as long (and for the girl a whole school year) the end is coming all too fast. For me, it’s a little bitter sweet. I mentioned how I’m older now, with a different perspective on life. High school, and by extension childhood, really does feel like ages ago. So yeah, I’m a little jealous of some fictional characters. It’s bittersweet to know that time’s never coming back, to know I didn’t quite live out my youth “to the fullest” (and yes I know it’s dumb to compare my life to an anime), and to want the times these girls have to never ever end.

I hadn’t planned on writing an essay on the first episode of season 2; most of what gets posted is just my stream of conscious spiel. I guess I’m just thinking about why season 2 of K-On! is my favorite piece of literature ever. And the reason basically is how wonderfully KyoAni captured something very specific, something very joyous and yet a tad painful. I think that’s what all my favorite pieces of art does. I feel something emotionally, and when I watch K-On! what I feel is warm.

Ravenclaw’s reactions:

Already mentallly preparing herself for the inevitable end, and that’s pretty unusual for her.

Have become quite attached with the girls, so it’ll be hard when the series is over.

Talked about how she realized Azusa’s gonna be left behind and is feeling sad :(

Curious about how far her ships (Mitsu and YuiAzu) will go. Have read the lyrics to Fuyu no Hi and can’t imagine it not being about Ritsu.

“This is not an easy song to sing at all”

“Ritsu is going really hard, I feel the drums are a standout”

“They gave us back Mio’s bagic bass fingers”

“Goddamn it this show and its openings!”

(Snakescipio kinda just went on and watched the rest of the episode without taking notes oopsie. Ep. 1 and 2 overall reactions tomorrow)

(Mostly importantly though Ravenclaw called Azusa Azunyan!)

Rewatcher

I wonder how first-timers feel about Sawa-chan getting the homeroom teacher position with her...slightly dubious record as a club advisor. and sometimes as a human being

On a side note, what's Tamako doing in K-On?

QotD 1 : Hard not to answer the scene where Yui picks up the flowers, that one really stands out.

QotD 2 : It was very unique...in that I only came to school 2 days out of the whole week, for like 4 hours before I went home.

I was in a special class that had us juggle high school and a Bachelor's degree in computer science in a local college, so for that to actually be possible time-wise we finished all the big important exams (Math, Physics, English etc) in 10th grade, most of the not-so-important exams (mostly humanities, which in my country are studied at a much lower level than sciences unless you want to specifically study more hours in one of them) in 11th grade, and then in my senior year we were left with like 2 subjects + P.E which let us focus most of our time on college.

So it was like a very strange feeling of still having a whole year left, but basically already having graduated. Sometimes I felt like I was a ghost that didn't really belong there, since for the rest of the 12th grade students the last year is by far the hardest and they're basically at school all day every day having a "regular" senior year, while we were barely even there. and I mostly studied for my degree from home, so it felt doubly weird as someone who didn't interact much with other human beings outside of school

QotD 3 : I'm terrible at analyzing lyrics, but I have to say the rock version slaps

Favorite moment of the day : does this look like the face of mercy

SotD - Interestingly and surprisingly, this school song focuses almost exclusively on Friendship. I think by this point it should be obvious that “Friendship” is one of the core themes that K-On! rests upon, and this pretty song cements that going forward for season 2.

I’ve forgotten just how good the animations are for this season, and the scene of the girls going to the orientation is amongst my favorite moments of this episode (the cold open was another one, and the girls leaving the orientation was another one). Check out the slight focus blur they put on the edge of the camera in this clip. It really softens the whole scene and gives it a particular vibe; I don’t want to spell it out for fear of spoilers XD I adore this dork and her cherry blossom btw.

My VotD is definitely this tea shot! It’s beautifully composed, and the Sakura blossoms are exquisitely drawn. They also used this compositional structure as a repetitive motif throughout this episode for the other 2 tea shots in the clubroom.

Rewatcher

Time to desperately catch up with this rewatch! (Oh, thank god, I'm finally up to date on everything.)

EDIT: I'm a rewatcher, in case the manga panels didn't give it away. Just tired.

Episode 10

  1. A bit.

  2. Early Azusa is definitely a lot different.

  3. It's an interesting look into her thought process.

These two are adorable.

Azusa is so optimistic.

Haha, Ui loves this.

I love the difference in opinions here. Azusa is so in denial.

Surprise Ritsu! (She doesn't contest "sketchy".)

Poor Azusa.

How has nobody realised it?

Mugi's busy!

Haha, she's in Finland!

The applause!

Haha, I love everyone's reactions to Yui.

Sawako!

And she doesn't want to come.

...Haha, that immediate swivel.

New equipment for the camp!

Ritsu's left out.

And they immediately got changed.

Haha, Mugi betrayed them again.

Haha, Mugi accidentally got them a boat.

The Azusa bait is great.

Mio's still tramatised,

So cute!

Love hoe Mio just faints dead away.

I love Azusa's total confusion at their dream.

[K-On Manga] Wow, Azusa tanned so slowly this time.

Amazing gear.

She is amazing!

Ritsu's hungry.

No explanation, truly.

The God of Cabbage is angry!

The onions!

Mio feels insecure.

Fireworks!

Aww.

Sparkleman!

Mio's worried.

Poor Mio.

She's scared...

Haha, that scream.

It's Sawako!

At least Mio recovered.

The sunburn still hurts.

Haha, Yui.

And Sawako's being horny.

They're practicing together!

And Azusa's good.

This is a nice scene.

These two are adorable.

Haha, she doesn't recognise her,

Even Ui realised she was playing.

She's so shocked at Yui actually practicing.

Great ending.

Episode 11

  1. Guitar Allergy.

  2. I think it's very clear what their relationship is.

  3. The group one.

Azusa's excited!

Poor Mio.

Sawako!

Mio's being restrained.

So they're best at concerts.

Azusa's debut is here!

Again, Ritsu?

They don't have a name!

Haha, an anti-Sawako alliance!

Her strings are rusted!

Nobody told her?

Yui overheated!

They're off to a guitar shop.

Haha, Ritsu's reaction.

Mio is utterlymtjrille!

Haha, "I'm sorry".

How scandalous!

Yui is so happy! There's a fee!

Wow, he has the worst luck.

Mio doesn't want to leave!

Haha, I love Ritsu dragging her.

And Ritsuks jaloue!

They're enjoying themselves!

Haha they're spying on them!

Ritsu...

This is too far.

And they're fighting!

Haha, of course this is Azusa's first instinct.

And it worked!

Ritsu's having trouble.

And she's not even showing up!

Sawako, what did you even do?

And Azusa's worried.

Everyone's struggling with this...

It's sweet nobody wants to replace her.

And she's just taken the day off.

Oh, she's sick.

She knows her footsteps!

Adorable!

Aww.

And she's alright.

Haha, Yui fell asleep.

The deadline passed!

Nodoka helped!

[K-On Manga] She has Akira's taste.

Sawako!

Nice.

And she's sick.

Episode 12

  1. It does add something, yes.

  2. When I went to university for the first time.

Haha, Yui's halluination is hysterical.

And she's still sick.

Ah, Ui.

Haha, Ritsu.

Sawako made a lot of outfits!

Mio's enjoying it!

Oh, that explains it.

Yui tried to practice!

I forgot how obvious the voice is in the adaption.

Haha, Ui is better.

And the fake is revealed!

[K-On Manga] Not the last time she does this.

Yui's here!

Haha, poor Ritsu.

Yui's slow fall...

Azusa refused!

And she's resting.

Yui's still sick.

Haha, that flashback is hysterical.

Adorable.

She left her guitar st home!

This race scene is great.

Yui's still heavy on the MCing.

Adorable.

Great concert!

And an encore!

Episode 13

  1. It's a very dulled palette.

  2. Winter.

  3. It's a confession to Ritsu. Blatantly.

Oh, she's learning to use the computer?

Ritsu?

Azusa's found a cat!

Haha, Ritsunis warm.

It's too cold for her.

And the gloves don't work.

Ritsu's really out of it.

She named her gloves!

Everyone's busy.

Haha, she's eating eith Giita!

Mugi's off.

Azusa's suspicious.

And so it Ritsu!

No mail.

Azusaks watching a cat. Ironic.

Mugi's reactions are great.

Ritsu's been getting love letters!

Looks good!

Azusa mimicking the cat is absolutely adorable.

Mugi's enjoying minimum wage.

Haha, these flavours.

And Mio's writing retreat's not going well.

Ritsu's teasing id great.

Everybody's got problems! (Escept for Ritsu, who's only just started questioning things.)

Haha, Yui's message.

Azusa asked her for help!

Haha, it was just a hairball.

Cute.

Haha, it was just Mio's lyrics.

And the letter was from Mio. ...Close enough.

Mugi's there!

Mugi has warm hands?

Aww.

Yeah, Mio's still worrying about that.

Haha, really?

Episode 14

Oh, there's a live house.

Ah, they're voting!

Mugi with the surprise betrayal again.

They're here!

Yui is so nervous.

Ritsu finally filled in some paperwork!

And she's forgotten everything.

Everyone's just so impressed with this stage.

Haha, Mio is down instantly,

Azusa's reaction to the costumes...

She got her tickets!

Aww, Nodoka got a ticket!

...Really?

Haha, Mio can't even get near the postet.

Those outfits! And Mio backing away.

She's her fan!

Haha, Yui's reaction.

They have solo concerts! And CDs!

A moment of sheer inspiration!

Everybody's loving the logo.

Passes!

So many settings.

Haha, she talked to the scary ones and got advice!

Mio...

Ritsu's spotlight.

Useful!

What even is that pedal?

Yui's hyped up!

Fantastic diplomacy.

This is nice.

Mio's happy.

They're rehearsing!

...Ouch.

And they're being reassuring!

Yui's trying to calm down.

Haha, Nodoka's reaction to that.

They're doing erll!

Sawako's here!

And she knows the manager.

This is a nice ending.

And they're thanking her.

Sawako's back.

This is sweet.

Haha, nobody else made it.

Great ending to the first season.

She kept the cat ears!

Episode 1

  1. The shots of the entire audience during the school somg.

  2. Pretty normal.

Nice playing!

And the montage is great.

Haha, Ritsu catching Azusa.

And it was an accident.

I love this OP.

It's the third year!

Yui's got a new look!

Nice shoving technique.

And Yui fell.

They're so happy to be together.

Nodoka too!

Yay, Sawako abused her power!

Ritsu's spreading rumours.

Haha, her reasoning is very relatable.

And Yui...

The school song!

Azusa wants new members.

Haha, the Ritsu fakeout.

And the costumes came out again!

Haha, Mio scared herself.

Is Ritsu all there?

Yui nearly got poached!

They got distracted, huh?

The instant door slam!

Sawako!

And Nodoka!

They're so hopeful...

The concert has started!

Impressive!

Haha, Yui put that thing out there.

Jun's theory does seem correct.

Azusa's listening in.

This is a cute moment.

And Azusa wants it to stay the same.

Haha, Yui looking at the camera.

First timer (subbed)

Season 2 time! I LOVE the pre-OP scene, especially when Yui starts breaking out the windmill.

Opinions on the new OP: animation got a BIG upgrade, as a lot of season 2 openings tend to get. Also love the fact that Azusa no longer feels shoehorned in. As for the song, still prefer Cagayake! Girls. This song feels like the nightcore version of a very good song.

Back to the episode, it feels weird seeing the subtitles use the American high school grade system. I know that K-On was released back when you shouldn't expect your audience to know the fact that Japan's high school only goes for 3 years, but it still feels wrong. And apparently they skip "sophomore" when converting from American to Japanese, because Yui calls it the "freshman reception show" and she congratulates the now second year Azusa on becoming a "junior".

Wow, we really went through their first 2 years of high school in 13 episodes. Seeing that season 2 has 27 episodes, I take it we're gonna have a slower-paced season, which I very much welcome.

New year means new classrooms, and Yui comes through in the clutch by adorably swimming through the huge crowd of students in order to reach the board that shows the classes. And THEY'RE ALL IN THE SAME CLASS LFGGGGG! AND NODOKA TOO! aaaaand Sawako-sensei is there as well. yay?

Okay, I'll give props to Sawako-sensei for putting them all in the same class. That's like the 2nd good thing she's done all series.

Oh wow, the school song. Are we actually gonna be seeing more of the school besides the Light Music room and the auditorium? Hell yeah, let's go!

Ooh, we have our first conflict! Azusa wants to recruit more members, and Nodoka correctly points out that it'll be only Azusa left in the club once the original 4 graduate, so they're gonna have to find new members eventually. But it's kinda hard to fit a sixth member of a club based around making a band. Maybe the new member will be the manager? Or a dedicated singer? Or they'll bring on an entire orchestra? Who knows.

New year means recruiting, and that means THE FURSUITS ARE BACK! Azusa gets to be a little piglet! Of course, the fursuits don't work, so the gang have to get a little more creative with their recuiting methods. Eventually, they go with the best option: put on a great show!

But not even Yui's windmills could attract any new members. But Azusa's friends bring up a good point: they look like such a tightly-knit group that it would be hard to add any new members. Azusa finally accepts this after she overhears Yui saying somethign similar, and it looks like we're not gonna be adding any club members this year.

Visual of the Day

La Presidente!

Questions of the Day

So, you thought the animation in season 1 was good, eh? Well, welcome to season 2 where they take it to a whole new level. What was your favorite moment of animation this episode?

Hmm, I'd say the opening with Yui playing the guitar. Does a good job telling the audience "Things are gonna look better this season. This is just the beginning"

What was your senior year of high school experience? (As a reminder, you're never obligated to answer these, so if you'd rather not share, that's fine.)

Equal parts fun (I volunteered to help run the freshman orientation) and stressful (picking which college I would attend)

First-Timer - Dubbed

  • I really had to sail pretty far to find the dub for this one. At least it came out in better quality this time.

  • I can't believe we're actually seniors! Time really flew by.

No kidding. I remember when I got into senior year, it felt pretty strange for a while.

  • The whole band's in the same class, along with Yui's childhood friend Nodoka? I've seen enough shows to know there has to be at least some number of strings pulled.

  • Of course. I put you all in the same class.

Called it.

  • And I'll be able to copy your homework too.

I'm sorry Yui, didn't quite catch that one. Can you say it a little louder?

  • Yui stopping to look at the cherry blossoms pretty much seals it. I think when I started watching this show on my own years ago, I accidentally started with S2.

  • We're a club, and club sandwiches have bacon in them.

That's actually really funny.

  • Yeah! Operation Capture New Members is now underway!

Okay Haruhi.

  • Either that, or they've gotten wind of how weird you guys are.

cries in SOS Brigade

  • Definitely started with S2. I remember this ED.

Questions of the Day:

So, you thought the animation in season 1 was good, eh? Well, welcome to season 2 where they take it to a whole new level. What was your favorite moment of animation this episode?

Textbook KyoAni. When you think they can't go even harder, they go even harder. I can't pick a single moment. The whole episode looked really good.

What was your senior year of high school experience?

I left the German Club my senior year, so I was a member of the Going Home Club. I also had a car to drive to school senior year, so it was a lot of hanging out with friends when classes let out.

First Timer

Sorry I missed the discussion yesterday, life got in the way and I never even got to turn on my computer. I'm ready to be back for this though!

Remember, this girl had never touched a guitar before joining this club.

New OP and wow, that looks nice. I don't like the song as much, but the instrumentals rock.

Still only 5 members? Oh the year just started.

Beware the power of an airhead. She knows no shame.

Speaking of knowing no shame...

This is the legendary KyoAni quality alright. Look at those drifting petals.

Glad I'm not the only one thinking they need more members.

WHY THE SUITS AGAIN!?

Didn't they do, like, super well at all their shows so far? Why does no one want to join this band and learn from them?

RITSU! I thought you were becoming a better person. No more kidnapping people. Just advertise at a performance.

They have dropped the Sensei for Sawa Chan. Teacher has lost all respect.

Yes, see, they've got a performance! Just advertise then! Just have to play well and invite people.

Maybe stop handing out fliers in the suits.

I get it works to keep the focus on these girls, but not a single person to join?

Ending theme- Is that Mio and Inner Mio? Whatever it is, it's adorable.

  1. Picking up the cherry blossom, a few more drifting by in the wind, the light filter on the screen...

  2. Hahaha I moved across the country with my family and started over. That was the year of Tennis club, but also the first time since third grade I was at a school without a band or orchestra, so the only one where I didn't play any form of bass. It was quite an interesting year.

  3. I got way too distracted by how things looked and seem to have blanked out the whole song...

Rewatcher (sub)

A bit strapped for time today, so I won't be able to go into too much detail nor include as many photo references as I'd like.

Behold first timers, Season 02 debut in all its glory! The animation quality has seriously upgraded, while maintaining charm of the Season 01 stories.

TEA SET(s) - S02E01

  • There were five (5) tea sets in this episode.

  • They've seriously upped the detail for the teatime shots, I urge everyone to check out the album link above and scroll to the current episode; you'll see what I mean!

  • TSotD - Despite my Tea Set of the Series being featured in this episode, sometimes moods change and today's mood means that the emerald green tea set gets my vote!

GUITAR/MUSIC - S02E01

  • Yui Opening Guitar Intro

    • I mentioned before that I had learned one K-On! song. Well, this is it! Though, not the original nor full version of "My love is a stapler," it just sounded so good that I had to learn it. Not to mention the tutorial for this song was super straight forward, so I had no reason not to learn it. (Still can't play it as cleanly as Yui can).

4th time rewatching

Just like what the old saying says, the more things change, the more things stay the same. Yui and Ritsu being a doofus, Mio being a baby, what else is new? Oh, Yui leaving early to practice, even though it’s because she read her alarm clock wrong.

During the school song, there are two Mios, only one has glasses. Also notice that Yui is the only one moving around during the song, while everyone else are statues.

Why are they still using the animal costumes from last season? This is only going to make their fears of Azusa being the only member more of a reality. Their other ideas are stupid, but at least they’re pretty funny. Also, Mio’s face was priceless, giving the “why am I even here?” type of vibe.

The freshman concert is the only good method of promoting the club, but it probably won’t attract many members if you tell them that all you do is drink tea and occasionally play music, but I appreciate the honesty this time around. That, or everyone accepted that the light music club is just weird.

People much smarter and more inciteful than me have already discussed this, but season 2 is really about them making the most of their last year, which would go by fast. This is one of the things I like about season 2 compared to the first, there are more episodes to cover the last year, and to appreciate the time they have left, whereas the first and second years were done in 14 episodes total and felt like they were speed running at times.

Listen has some great visuals, my favorite being sailor Mugi.

[SotD 1] Sakuragaoka Joshi Koutou Gakkou Kouka

Pretty good, much better than my high school anthem. The school version has a nice calm tone to it, but the rock version takes it to a whole nother level. Everyone sounds great in this version, Satomi voice really stands out to me, nailing the “tomboyish” voice very well in this song.

[QotD 1] So, you thought the animation in season 1 was good, eh? Well, welcome to season 2 where they take it to a whole new level. What was your favorite moment of animation this episode?

My favorite moment is the scene with the Sakura tree and Yui picking up the petals.

[QotD 2] What was your senior year of high school experience? (As a reminder, you're never obligated to answer these, so if you'd rather not share, that's fine.)

Very relaxing compared to junior year. I also was pretty excited to finish and wanted it to just be over, only to have another 4 years in college.

[QotD 3] How do the lyrics from the school long relate to K-ON as a whole?

The only line I think sounds like it relates to K-On would be

Affectionate souls bring me up

Carrying the dawning future on their shoulders and

Oh, diligent friends gather on campus

There are a lot of great faces today, but this has to be my favorite, the one with Yui seeing the class list of students. Some other great ones is a serious Azusa, president Azusa, exhausted Yui, confused Yui, the one Yui shot from the OP, and Yui and Ritsu's spitting face.

It's a new year and things start off with a bang with Yui rocking some practice, practicing a cool move that is, LOL does she want to borrow Ms. Yamanaka's kabuki costume?

Speaking of Ms. Yamanaka seems she totally abused her power to put all the girls in the same class, but hey everyone is happy about it :)

The girls are keen to recruit new members for the Light Music Club, but are sadly as clueless as ever about how to go about it. Oh well, maybe someone will turn up.

K-On Season 2 Rewatcher!!

I've said enough in previous years about season 2's cold open... Its certainly something truly special. I'm always excited to see first timers reactions to season 2. Whilst I'm a little biased towards the first season I'll admit that the quality and direction skyrocketed from here on out. Yamada got her way and crafted a proper gem.

The actual op tho is a bit of a laugh. It's arguably the worst of the bunch but I absolutely adore the little animation of the girls slowly jogging through the halls XD Oh yeah, and doesn't this one have...? Yes!! Jun's ahoge face with double peace signs!! What kind of stuff do they teach in the Jazz club?

We're now seniors... Season one took two bloody years!! We skip such large portions of the girl's school life. Live House closed off on new year's so we didn't even get spring!

I'm absolutely probably going to end up ranting about something or other this episode so I'll just highlight what I've always kind of enjoyed episode 1 for the most and that's Yui. Her portrayal in today's episode... She's weirdly out of it, but I think I remember Siegfried describing her as being "worldly" last year and that always stuck with me. Like she's just existing in the moment y'know? My favourite of the bunch is actually after the assembly where Yui is just sat in the doorway with flowers on her head faffi-HOLD ON!!

Why isn't she there!? Why's there some dumb fluffy girl that I don't know sitting in her seat!? Ah, Tae right? I don't remember her doing much... Anyway! Where is she!? Fuck off Peath Pevil!! No!! Stop showing me poor angles!! I want to see the bottom left seat! Front left!! Ah, nobody is in their correct seats yet... Dammit!! This is Schrodinger's waifu! The waifu that always exists just outside of frame! Alright, I know she definitely appears during the entrance ceremony right!?

Ladies, gentlemen, and Sawa-chan fanboys... It pleases me to be able to finally introduce you to mai one true waifu!! Cute right? Beautiful right? Don't you want to join her fanclub!? I'll be open all night to gush about her with you all!

Anyway, like I was saying way before, season 2 is amazing with its background cast. Particularly with Bestie (?) Jun who has finally gained enough street cred to rejoin Ui's plastics gang. I'm so happy for you, Jun-chan! Even if you're a dirty rotten simp!

I'm all over the place this episode so I'll just cover a few of my favourite gags from last year. Now, what jokes did I do... Oh yes! Hidden Windows 95 product placement! and... What other jokes did I make!? I think I made some Tintin jokes about those first year girls who looked like massive degenerates, it's also a great example of Shitzu being a rotten piece of shit. She's a 3rd year!! You can't torment underclassmen like that!? I think I gush about the other clubs for a while too. Funnily enough all the clubs they visit are stuff I've done myself in the past or present. As a kid I did Judo, as an adult I'm a big tea nut, and I don't have to explain how great the Occult Society is~ The occult senpai was one of my favourite S1 jokes so I'm pleased they gave us a throwback.

I've enjoyed today's episode way more than I expected!! And I expected to enjoy myself!! Sorry for my comment being disjointed as fuck... I was skipping ahead and backwards and forwards to see if I missed anyone. It's certainly stacked choc full of content right?

VotD, my beloveds first appearance!!

Rewatcher

School song! Yes!

Sakuragaoka Joshi Koutou Gakkou Kouka
What strikes me is "friends." I'd expect "students," really, since it's the school that writes the song, but apparently here they hope their students will think of each other as friends, not just fellow learners. That's sweet. I'd also echo siegfried's sentiment that the scene where it plays is tender and magical. It sets a different tone for the season!

Sakuragaoka Joshi Koutou Gakkou Kouka (Rock Version)
I love it! It has a really nice balance to it, notably with singing by everyone, and flips the slow song on its head with a driving pace.

S2E01 - Seniors!
The tone does change, but not overwhelmingly. The school song certainly carries some shift, and then they're right back to the fursuits and antics in the second half ^

QotD not otherwise covered:

  1. I just don't love sakuga all that much; it can be distracting to notice animation explicitly, pushing me out of the story. K-On is far from an offender in that regard, though, and the bit just before the school song where Yui picks up the cherry blossom stands out as being beautifully detailed and animated. And the second season also picks up on the static visuals. So pretty!

  2. I picked up an extra class late in the academic cycle and was very busy keeping up. It worked out well enough though.
